International Human Rights Law Perspective On Grutter And Gratz, David Weissbrodt

Articles

There is an international human rights law aspect to Grutter v. Bollinger 1 and Gratz v. Bollinger 2 that might be missed by many lawyers and scholars who rarely consider any legal domain beyond the limits of the U.S. Constitution. Indeed, Grutter and Gratz reflect a trend in Supreme Court opinions to use international human rights sources in interpreting the Constitution.

Honors Capstones

The purpose of this study was to investigate listeners' perceptions of two speakers during a job interview. College students were asked to rate two speakers; aperson who stuttered and a person who was fluent during a videotaped job interview. The results of this study suggested that although the subjects noticed the speech difficulties of the candidate who stuttered and thought her to be nervous, they did not perceive the speaker who stuttered to be less competent for the job. The candidate who stuttered was rated in a comparable range to the fluent candidate on questions of competency and employment.

No Need To Lie, Just Use Statistics : The Power And Politics Of Statistics, William James Fulp

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

In today's society, it is impossible to escape the power of statistics, and most of the times statistics are accepted without much thought of how they came about - or what could be wrong with them. Consider some of the statistics referenced during the course of a normal day. Turn on the television, and the weatherman claims the chance of rain is at 80%. After deciding to trust this statistic and grabbing an umbrella, you open up the newspaper, and the headline reads "President's Approval Rating Climbs to 66%." On your way to work, the traffic announcer informs you of …

Conceptualizing Nature: The Politics Behind Allocating And Utilizing Native Forest Resources In New Zealand, Gregory Stephen Gullette

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

This paper explores the political ecological basis behind events in New Zealand’s sustainable harvesting regime of native forest species on public land. The case study centers on the mandate of the 1999 newly elected Labour-led government to stop all native forest harvesting on Crown-owned land along the West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island. Ethnographic research was conducted from May to July of 2001. This study examined how different members of a given institution or community often have disparate views on logging practices and natural resource conservation while simultaneously exhibiting consensus regarding certain logging and conservation practices. A historical background …
