Ocean Color Modeling: Parameterization And Interpretation, Hui Feng Jan 2004

Ocean Color Modeling: Parameterization And Interpretation, Hui Feng

Doctoral Dissertations

The ocean color as observed near the water surface is determined mainly by dissolved and particulate substances, known as "optically-active constituents," in the upper water column. The goal of ocean color modeling is to interpret an ocean color spectrum quantitatively to estimate the suite of optically-active constituents near the surface. In recent years, ocean color modeling efforts have been centering upon three major optically-active constituents: chlorophyll concentration, colored dissolved organic matter, and scattering particulates. Many challenges are still being faced in this arena. This thesis generally addresses and deals with some critical issues in ocean color modeling.

Self-Efficacy And Allocation Of Effort During Reading Among Older And Younger Adults, Danielle D. Gagne Jan 2004

Self-Efficacy And Allocation Of Effort During Reading Among Older And Younger Adults, Danielle D. Gagne

Doctoral Dissertations

Recent research in social cognition suggests one's self-efficacy beliefs regarding one's cognitive abilities can influence the effort expended on cognitive tasks (Bandura, 1989; 1997; Cavanaugh & Greene, 1990; Dunlosky & Hertzog, 1998), which may affect performance. This project was conducted to examine the relationship between age, self-efficacy beliefs, text difficulty, resource allocation to text comprehension processes, and memory for text. 82 younger adults and 74 older adults completed the Metamemory in Adulthood Questionnaire (MIA; Dixon, Hultsch & Hertzog, 1988), Reading Self-Efficacy Questionnaire (RSEQ), and Media Consumption Habits Questionnaire. Using the on-line word-by-word moving window method, participants read 24 two-sentence passages …

Asian American Perspectives On College Student Experience: An Interpretive Narrative, Linda Chen Einsiedler Jan 2004

Asian American Perspectives On College Student Experience: An Interpretive Narrative, Linda Chen Einsiedler

Doctoral Dissertations

This is a socio-cultural study examining contemporary Asian American college student experiences at a private liberal arts residential college in the rural Northeast United States. This project utilizes a grounded theory approach designed to collect both qualitative and quantitative data. The findings include a narrative interpretation that considers emotional experiences and social behaviors as sub-consciously held internalized identity beliefs.

This project details psychological and social dimensions of shared Asian American experiences with insights into individual interpretive perspective frameworks shaped by community cultures. This study describes a distinctive Asian American identity that conjoins ethnicity with racial self-identity. Variables in ethnic identity, …

Contributions To Predicting Contaminant Leaching From Secondary Materials Used In Roads, Defne S. Apul Jan 2004

Contributions To Predicting Contaminant Leaching From Secondary Materials Used In Roads, Defne S. Apul

Doctoral Dissertations

Slags, coal ashes, and other secondary materials can be used in road construction. Both traditional and secondary materials used in roads may contain contaminants that may leach and pollute the groundwater. The goal of this research was to further the understanding of leaching and transport of contaminants from pavement materials. Towards this goal, a new probabilistic framework was introduced which provided a structured guidance for selecting the appropriate model, incorporating uncertainty, variability, and expert opinion, and interpreting results for decision making. In addition to the framework, specific contributions were made in pavement and embankment hydrology and reactive transport, Bayesian statistics, …

A Study Of Basidiomycetes Isolated From Coarse Woody Debris And Contiguous Soil Horizons In A Mixed Deciduous-Conifer Forest In New Hampshire, United States Of America, Therese Ann Thompson Jan 2004

A Study Of Basidiomycetes Isolated From Coarse Woody Debris And Contiguous Soil Horizons In A Mixed Deciduous-Conifer Forest In New Hampshire, United States Of America, Therese Ann Thompson

Doctoral Dissertations

The wood decay fungus Hypholoma sublateritium (Fr.) Quel., links the mineral (BC & E) and organic (Oe) soil layers to decomposing coarse woody debris (CWD) in a northern hardwood forest. This link supports the possibility that energy stored in woody debris can facilitate the vertical transfer of elements and compounds within the soil profile. This potential transfer implies new pathways for biogeochemical cycling within forests. H. sublateritium was isolated from basidiocarp fruiting bodies (October 1997 & 1998), Acer rubrum L. bole wood (June 1999), and three soil horizons (October 1999 and October 2000) from one of six research sites in …

Analysis Of Signal Output By The Ethylene Receptor Etr1 From Arabidopsis, Xiang Qu Jan 2004

Analysis Of Signal Output By The Ethylene Receptor Etr1 From Arabidopsis, Xiang Qu

Doctoral Dissertations

Ethylene is one of the most important plant hormones and regulates many processes during plant growth and development. In Arabidopsis, the ethylene receptor family consists of five members: ETR1 and ERS1 have a functional histidine kinase domain and form subfamily 1; members of subfamily 2, including ETR2, ERS2, and EIN4, possess a highly diverged histidine kinase domain predicted not to be functional. To analyze signal output by the ethylene receptor ETR1 from Arabidopsis, mutant-based approaches were taken. Initially, the role of the proposed signal output region of ETR1 in ethylene signaling was examined. For this purpose, the ability of mutant …

The Relative Impact Of Childhood Stressor Domains On Young Adult Depression And The Mediating Role Of Social And Personal Resources, Paul A. Muller Jan 2004

The Relative Impact Of Childhood Stressor Domains On Young Adult Depression And The Mediating Role Of Social And Personal Resources, Paul A. Muller

Doctoral Dissertations

Numerous studies have documented the harmful effects of childhood exposure to adversity on adult psychopathology. The relative impact of different types of stress, however, is less certain. Moreover, while there is very good evidence that childhood exposure to adversity does increase the likelihood of experiencing psychopathology, less is known about the mechanisms through which this happens. It is my hypothesis that childhood adversity exhibits effects on psychological distress in young adulthood, at least in part, through its damaging impact on the development of social and personal resources---specifically, by affecting a reduction in family support, peer support, self-esteem, and mastery. Further, …

Nucleation And Growth Kinetics Of Tin And Tin -Silver Alloy During Initial Stages Of Electrodeposition, Zhongqin Zhang Jan 2004

Nucleation And Growth Kinetics Of Tin And Tin -Silver Alloy During Initial Stages Of Electrodeposition, Zhongqin Zhang

Doctoral Dissertations

Electrodeposition has played an essential role in electronics packaging because it gives superior thickness control for chip interconnects. Pure tin, tin-silver and tin-silver-based solders have been identified as leading candidates for lead-free solders due to the desirable melting point, good creep resistance and thermo-mechanical behavior.

The initial stage of electrodeposition, or the formation of small clusters of atoms (nuclei), is significant in the overall electrodeposition kinetics, as well as the appearance, structure, and properties of the resulting coatings. In this work, nucleation and growth kinetics of tin and tin-silver electrodeposition on copper and nickel substrates were investigated by electrochemical methods …

Needling Doubts: A Sociological Examination Of Parental Resistance To Childhood Immunizations, Catherine L. Moran Jan 2004

Needling Doubts: A Sociological Examination Of Parental Resistance To Childhood Immunizations, Catherine L. Moran

Doctoral Dissertations

Within recent years, a group of parents who question or oppose vaccination has emerged in the United States. While recently receiving attention within medicine and public health, parental questioning of and resistance to childhood immunization is a trend that has yet to be examined within sociology. This dissertation explores the role of parental characteristics, beliefs, and attitudes on resistance to pediatric immunization.

Thirty-five in-depth interviews with parents who postponed or refused vaccinations for their children were conducted. Qualitative data were used to develop a survey instrument including a series of scales measuring parental beliefs and attitudes about pediatric vaccination. The …

On The Rayleigh -Brillouin Scattering In Air, Qiuhua Zheng Jan 2004

On The Rayleigh -Brillouin Scattering In Air, Qiuhua Zheng

Doctoral Dissertations

GroundWinds lidar system is a high-spectral-resolution lidar system that can directly measure the Rayleigh-Brillouin scattering (RBS) spectra, from which the wind, temperature, and turbulence in the troposphere can be measured. Its transmitter is a double-frequency Nd-YAG laser at 532nm. Most of the data used in this research were taken on 31 July 2002.

A widely used mathematic model---the S6 model---is fitted to the measured RBS spectra. The discrepancies between the measured temperature from the RayleighBrillouin spectra and from the radiosonde, combined with the discrepancies between the model and the measured RBS spectra, indicate that there is room for the S6 …

Genetic Diversity And Structure Of Calanoid Copepods: Molecular Evolutionary Patterns In Coastal Estuaries (Acartia Tonsa) And The Open Ocean (Calanus Spp), Robert Sean Hill Jan 2004

Genetic Diversity And Structure Of Calanoid Copepods: Molecular Evolutionary Patterns In Coastal Estuaries (Acartia Tonsa) And The Open Ocean (Calanus Spp), Robert Sean Hill

Doctoral Dissertations

Calanoid copepods are an important part of marine and estuarine ecosystems. However, it has been difficult to study their life histories, population structure, and evolution because they share a conserved morphology that complicates species identification. A primary focus of this study was the genetic and physiological variation of the calanoid copepod Acartia tonsa from four estuaries along the East Coast of the USA (Great Bay, NH, Buzzards Bay, MA, Narragansett Bay, RI, and Beaufort Inlet, NC). Based on DNA sequence variation for the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I (mtCOI) gene, significant population structure was observed between all pairs of estuarine populations …

Chemical Heterogeneity Of Glaciofluvial Deposits: Outcrop Study And Implications For Reactive Transport, Gordon M. Sturgeon Jan 2004

Chemical Heterogeneity Of Glaciofluvial Deposits: Outcrop Study And Implications For Reactive Transport, Gordon M. Sturgeon

Doctoral Dissertations

Spatial variations in the reactive properties of geologic systems and their influence on contaminant transport are poorly understood. Consequently, an outcrop study was conducted in a glaciofluvial deposit in Deerfield, New Hampshire in order to: (1) identify the sediment properties controlling heavy metal adsorption, (2) evaluate the extent to which geologic information can be used to characterize their spatial variation, and (3) assess the impact of spatial variations on heavy metal transport. Four hundred seventy-six, spatially-located sediment samples were collected from an eight square meter vertical exposure of outwash sands and gravels. Lithologic facies were mapped on outcrop photographs. Sample …

Entrepreneurial Open Source Software Hackers: Mysql And Its Dual Licensing, Robert W. Gomulkiewicz Jan 2004

Entrepreneurial Open Source Software Hackers: Mysql And Its Dual Licensing, Robert W. Gomulkiewicz

Articles

Hackers often quibble about commercializing software, yet most willreadily sell their programming services. Richard Stallman, the father of free software, has always recognized that hackers have a right to make money. Aside from selling programming services, however, Stallman's disciples seem to frown upon commercializing software. Other hackers, labeling themselves "open source" developers, have warmed to the possibility that free software may be profitable.

This article describes one of the most promising business models for hackers, called "dual licensing." In this model, hackers offer the same code under two different licenses: a commercial license and an open source license. Licensees who …

Electromyographic Analysis Of Lower Extremity Muscle Activity During Plyo Press Jump And A Vertical Jump, Leigh James Griffith, Kristen Michelle Olson, Daniel Kenneth Sinness, Steven Peter Thomas

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Many training programs have been developed to aid in training the athlete with their goal of maximizing strength and performance. The Plyo Press machine was developed for training athletes enrolled in the Frappier Sports Acceleration Program. This machine was designed to couple strength training with plyometrics to enhance dynamic muscle activity and speed.

There has been limited research on the Plyo Press machine to support these claims. Therefore, the purpose of our study was to compare muscle recruitment during a vertical floor jump versus a plyojump in the Ply Press leg machine. EMG analysis of selected lower extremity muscles was …

Armed Conflict, Health And Human Rights, Alex Deraney, Hafsteinn Hafsteinsson Jan 2004

Armed Conflict, Health And Human Rights, Alex Deraney, Hafsteinn Hafsteinsson

Human Rights & Human Welfare

This section highlights resources with information on health concerns that arise from armed conflict. It examines human rights violations as derived from health issues and the humanitarian efforts to alleviate them. The vast majority of available literature approaches conflict-related healthcare shortfalls in terms of intervention. Literature dealing with armed conflict and health as it applies to human rights is much harder to come by, which indicates the need for additional emphasis in this area.

Human Rights, Health And The Environment, David Gillespie Jan 2004

Human Rights, Health And The Environment, David Gillespie

Human Rights & Human Welfare

Environmental health and human rights are inextricably linked. According to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Article 3, “Everyone has the right to life, liberty, and security of person.” Given that the earth is the source of the basic necessities of human life, any discussion about health and human rights must be attentive to its inherent environmental aspects. International conventions, documents and reports such as Agenda 21 (1992) and The Draft Declaration of Human Rights and the Environment (1994) have expressly argued for such an integrated approach. In response, a plethora of works over the past decade have expanded the …

Characterization Of Protein Prenyltransferases And Protein Prenylation In Plasmodium Falciparum, Thiago Gaspar Dasilva Jan 2004

Characterization Of Protein Prenyltransferases And Protein Prenylation In Plasmodium Falciparum, Thiago Gaspar Dasilva

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Malaria kills at least one million people each year, mostly children - a death every 30 seconds. Almost one half of the world population is at risk from malaria. Antimalarial drugs are the only means for the treatment of about 500 million annual global malaria cases. Because of prevalent drug-resistance it is extremely urgent to identify new drug targets. Many proteins involved in eukaryotic signal transduction and cell cycle progression undergo post-translational lipid modification by a prenyl group. Protein prenyltransferases, which catalyze the post-translational prenyl modification, have been established as a target for anticancer therapy. Research done in our laboratory …

Pressure Groups And The State Homelessness Taskforce: An Investigation Of The Insider/Outsider Model Of Pressure Group Theory, Bianca Blake Jan 2004

Pressure Groups And The State Homelessness Taskforce: An Investigation Of The Insider/Outsider Model Of Pressure Group Theory, Bianca Blake

Theses : Honours

This research investigates the activities and experiences of two pressure groups involved in the State Homelessness Taskforce. The aim of the research is to critique the predominant understanding of insider and outsider pressure groups within the Australian literature, which is based primarily upon the sectional/promotional typology. The applicability of the Aberdeen insider/outsider model of pressure group theory within the Australian context is also determined. Due to methodological difficulties inherent in attempting to quantify the success or effectiveness of pressure groups, this research focuses specifically upon the strategies employed by each group in their attempt to influence the findings and recommendations …

Review Of Gender And The Victorian Periodical, Hilary Fraser, Stephanie Green, Judith Johnston Jan 2004

Review Of Gender And The Victorian Periodical, Hilary Fraser, Stephanie Green, Judith Johnston

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

'We are dominated by Journalism' 'a really remarkable power', Oscar Wilde observed, not entirely neutrally, in 'The Soul of Man under Socialism' published in the Fortnightly Review in 1891. Like many of his contemporaries, Wilde recognized not only the power of the press, but also its modernity. In this wide ranging and important study Hilary Fraser, Stephanie Green and Judith Johnston argue that precisely because of its power the periodical press occupied a central position in the construction of gender in Victorian cultural history.

Journalism was gendered masculine by those who accorded it a lofty status within the profession of …
