Spotlight: Response To Violence Against Women At The University Of Missouri At Columbia, Mary M. Beck

Faculty Publications

The University of Missouri (“MU”) sits in the picturesque college town of Columbia on the largest and oldest campus of the Missouri University system. MU is a land grant institution created with funds and land appropriated by the Morrill Acts of 1862 and 1890. The University “honors [that public trust] and accepts the associated accountability” by acquiring, creating, transmitting, and preserving knowledge. “MU's primary mission in research and doctoral education . . . provides the basis for service to the people of [Missouri] via outreach programs.” Domestic violence impacts MU's land grant influenced service mission. Its organizational departments, educational units, …

Habitat Preferences And Diving Behavior Of White Marlin (Tetrapturus Albidus) Released From The Recreational Rod-And-Reel And Commercial Pelagic Longline Fisheries In The Western North Atlantic Ocean: Implications For Habitat-Based Stock Assessment Models, Andrij Horodysky, David W. Kerstetter, John E. Graves

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Reports

To improve billfish assessments, researchers have applied habitat-based models that incorporate behavioral and oceanographic parameters to standardize historical catch-per-uniteffort time -series data, accounting for significant gear changes over time. However, there has been little behavioral data from Atlantic billfishes to support these models. We provide information on habitat preferences of white marlin released from recreational and commercial fisheries in the western North Atlantic. White marlin were tagged with pop-up satellite archival tags (PSATs) from recreational rod and reel (n=22) and commercial pelagic longline (n=2) fisheries between May-November 2002. Our data indicate that each surviving white marlin spent the majority of …

Race To The Top Of The Corporate Ladder: What Minorities Do When They Get There, Devon W. Carbado, Mitu Gulati Jan 2004

Race To The Top Of The Corporate Ladder: What Minorities Do When They Get There, Devon W. Carbado, Mitu Gulati

Faculty Articles

Racing to the top of the corporate hierarchy is difficult, no matter how qualified or capable the candidate. Producing more widgets than one's competitors is not enough. Negotiating the political landscape of the institution is also required. More specifically, individual corporate officers have to be appeased, powerful interest groups have to be co-opted and made allies, and competitors have to be undermined or eliminated. The more bureaucratic the organization and the more opaque the promotion process, the more important this institutional game to climbing the corporate ladder. This Article identifies the kind of racial minorities or racial types who are …

Reconstructability Analysis With Fourier Transforms, Martin Zwick Jan 2004

Reconstructability Analysis With Fourier Transforms, Martin Zwick

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

Fourier methods used in two‐ and three‐dimensional image reconstruction can be used also in reconstructability analysis (RA). These methods maximize a variance‐type measure instead of information‐theoretic uncertainty, but the two measures are roughly collinear and the Fourier approach yields results close to that of standard RA. The Fourier method, however, does not require iterative calculations for models with loops. Moreover, the error in Fourier RA models can be assessed without actually generating the full probability distributions of the models; calculations scale with the size of the data rather than the state space. State‐based modeling using the Fourier approach is also …

Paleocene Cyclic Sedimentation In The Western North Atlantic, Odp Site 1051, Blake Nose, Mary Anne Holmes, David K. Watkins, Richard D. Norris Jan 2004

Paleocene Cyclic Sedimentation In The Western North Atlantic, Odp Site 1051, Blake Nose, Mary Anne Holmes, David K. Watkins, Richard D. Norris

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Upper Paleocene (zone CP8b) cyclic sediment from Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 1051 on Blake Nose, western North Atlantic, alternates from white carbonate-rich to green carbonate-poor in response to precessional forcing. Compositional differences between the two bed types are minor: mineral and nannofossil composition of the beds vary subtly, but grain size of the terrigenous component and biogenic silica content remain constant. Iron content determined by sediment magnetic susceptibility and iron intensity determined by a core-scanning XRF correlates negatively with carbonate content and are higher in green beds. Kaolinite content of green beds is slightly higher as well. Green beds …

Geology And Paleontology Of The Upper John Day Beds, John Day River Valley, Oregon: Lithostratigraphic And Biochronologic Revision In The Haystack Valley And Kimberly Areas (Kimberly And Mt. Misery Quadrangles), Robert M. Hunt Jr., Ellen Stepleton Jan 2004

Geology And Paleontology Of The Upper John Day Beds, John Day River Valley, Oregon: Lithostratigraphic And Biochronologic Revision In The Haystack Valley And Kimberly Areas (Kimberly And Mt. Misery Quadrangles), Robert M. Hunt Jr., Ellen Stepleton

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

The John Day Formation of north-central Oregon preserves a succession of speciose, superposed Oligocene through early Miocene mammalian faunas that establish the sequence of mid-Cenozoic mammalian evolution within the Pacific Northwest. Upper John Day rock units initially described by Merriam (1900, 1901) in the Kimberly and Haystack Valley areas were later divided into lower (Kimberly) and upper (Haystack Valley) members by Fisher and Rensberger (1972). We focused our study on the lithostratigraphic succession within the Haystack Valley Member. Rocks previously included in the Haystack Valley Member can be subdivided into four unconformity-bounded, genetic lithostratigraphic units that range in age from …

Provenance Of Sand In Periglacial Sand Wedges And Sheet Sand, Northeastern Nebraska, Usa, William J. Wayne Jan 2004

Provenance Of Sand In Periglacial Sand Wedges And Sheet Sand, Northeastern Nebraska, Usa, William J. Wayne

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Sand-wedge polygons on upland surfaces beneath thin loess in northeastern Nebraska record the existence of permafrost around the margin of the Wisconsinan glacier at its maximum advance. Strong unidirectional wind not only kept the upland surfaces free of snow, allowing frost to penetrate deeply and thermal contraction cracks to develop, but also dessicated the surface material so that frost action and sublimation of pore ice could loosen surface material. The strong NW-SE winds deflated soils from upland surfaces, made ventifacts of the cobbles in the lag that remained and created fields of yardangs oriented NW-SE. Sand derived from the soils …

The ionosphere is a highly dynamic medium that exhibits weather disturbances at all latitudes, longitudes, and altitudes, and these disturbances can have detrimental effects on both military and civilian systems. In an effort to mitigate the adverse effects, we are developing a physics-based data assimilation model of the ionosphere and neutral atmosphere called the Global Assimilation of Ionospheric Measurements (GAIM). GAIM will use a physics-based ionosphere-plasmasphere model and a Kalman filter as a basis for assimilating a diverse set of real-time (or near real-time) measurements. Some of the data to be assimilated include in situ density measurements from satellites, ionosonde …

Development Of A Physics-Based Reduced State Kalman Filter For The Ionosphere, Ludger Scherliess, Robert W. Schunk, Jan Josef Sojka, Donald C. Thompson

All Physics Faculty Publications

A physics-based data assimilation model of the ionosphere is under development as the central part of a Department of Defense/Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI)-funded program called Global Assimilation of Ionospheric Measurements (GAIM). With the significant increase in the number of ionospheric observations that will become available over the next decade, this model will provide a powerful tool toward an improved specification and forecasting of the global ionosphere, with an unprecedented accuracy and reliability. The goal of this effort will be specifications and forecasts on spatial grids that can be global, regional, or local (25 km × 25 km). The specification/forecast …

Using Microscopy To Examine Mechanisms Of Cell Division, Lily Copenagle Jan 2004

Using Microscopy To Examine Mechanisms Of Cell Division, Lily Copenagle

Student Theses and Dissertations

The accurate segregation of chromosomes during cell division requires the assembly of a microtubule-based mitotic spindle. In the research presented here, I examined two aspects of mitotic spindle morphogenesis. First, I looked at how chromosomes attach to microtubules in mitosis. The capture of microtubule plus-ends by kinetochores (the site of chromosome-microtubule attachment) has been described previously. However, recent data suggests that another mechanism must also contribute to this essential process. Here, with the aid of real-time confocal microscopy, I present direct evidence for an additional chromosome-spindle attachment mechanism in which the minus-ends of microtubules attached to chromosomes are captured by …

Resonant Detection Of Nano To Microscopic Objects Using Whispering Gallery Modes, Frank Vollmer Jan 2004

Resonant Detection Of Nano To Microscopic Objects Using Whispering Gallery Modes, Frank Vollmer

Student Theses and Dissertations

A micron sized glass sphere is able to confine light to its interior volume. The trapped light describes an orbital trajectory circumnavigating just below the microsphere surface. Whenever the light ray tries to escape it is sent back on its circular path by total internal reflection. The light orbit closes in on itself several thousand times and thus creates an optical resonance. The unprecedented narrow linewidth of such a microsphere resonance (Q factors of up to 3x10⁹) allows precise measurement of its frequency. Dielectric microspheres of very high Q are thus the ideal choice for a resonant molecular sensor. Although …

Instrumentation Of The Universal Clamp And Modeling In Biochemistry, Jiang Wu Jan 2004

Instrumentation Of The Universal Clamp And Modeling In Biochemistry, Jiang Wu

Open Access Dissertations

Instrumentation of the universal clamp. Voltage clamp has been an important method for studying current-voltage relationships across membranes of excitable cells such as neurons and muscles. The conventional voltage clamp amplifiers have been based on analog feedback controls. In this study a prototype digital voltage clamp system has been developed, which uses a digital signal processor (DSP) to implement feedback controls. The development was guided by computer simulation of both analog and digital voltage clamps that interact with a neuron model. Feasibility of the digital voltage clamp was demonstrated by its performance in an experiment comparable to that of an …

Electronic Speckle Pattern Shearing Interferometry Using Photopolymer Diffractive Optical Elements For Vibration Measurements, Emilia Mihaylova, Izabela Naydenova, Suzanne Martin, Vincent Toal Jan 2004

Electronic Speckle Pattern Shearing Interferometry Using Photopolymer Diffractive Optical Elements For Vibration Measurements, Emilia Mihaylova, Izabela Naydenova, Suzanne Martin, Vincent Toal

Conference Papers

Electronic speckle pattern shearing interferometry (ESPSI) is superior to Electronic speckle pattern interferometry (ESPI) when strain distribution, arising from object deformation or vibration, need to be measured. This is because shearography provides data directly related to the spatial derivatives of the displacement. Further development of ESPSI systems could be beneficial for wider application to the measurement of mechanical characteristics of vibrating objects. Two electronic speckle pattern shearing interferometers (ESPSI) suitable for vibration measurements are presented. In both ESPSI systems photopolymer holographic gratings are used to shear the images and to control the size of the shear. The holographic gratings are …

Observations Of Atmosphericgravity Waves Using Airglow All-Sky Ccd Imager At Cachoeira Paulista (23° S, 45° W), A. F. Medeiros, H. Takahashi, P. P. Batista, D. Gobbi, Michael J. Taylor

All Physics Faculty Publications

An all-sky CCD imager for OH, O2 and OI (557.7 nm) airglow was operated at Cachoeira Paulista (CP), Brazil, (23° S, 45° W), from October 1998 to September 1999, with Utah State University. Dominant gravity wave components are extracted and seasonal variations are investigated. These waves have typically short horizontal wavelengths (5 - 60 km), short periods (5 - 35 minutes), and horizontal phase speeds of 1 - 80 m/s. Band-type waves of horizontal wavelength between 10 and 60 km showed clear seasonal dependence in the horizontal propagation direction to southeast in summer and to northwest in winter. The direction …

Synthesis And Reactivity Of Tetrahydroimidazo [1,5-B][1,2,4]Oxadiazol- 2(1h)-Thiones, Necdet Coşkun, Fatma Ti̇rli̇ Tat Jan 2004

Synthesis And Reactivity Of Tetrahydroimidazo [1,5-B][1,2,4]Oxadiazol- 2(1h)-Thiones, Necdet Coşkun, Fatma Ti̇rli̇ Tat

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

1,3-Dipolar cycloaddition of imidazoline 3-oxides 1 with methylisothiocyanate proceeds regio- and diastereoselectively to give tetrahydroimidazo[1,5-b][1,2,4]oxadiazol-2(1H)-thiones 3 in high yields. The cis configuration of the adducts was proved by our double cis elimination test as well as by NOESY experiments. Adducts 3a-c undergo ring opening at reflux in acetonitrile to give imidazoles while 3d-e undergo retro dipolar cycloaddition to give the starting nitrones 1d-e. The imidazooxadiazol-2-thiones 3a-e were treated with concentrated HCl in ethanol at 50 °C to give the corresponding 4H-[1,2,4]oxadiazole-5-thione only in cases in which the substituent at C-6 is an aryl.

Kinetics And Mechanism Of Oxidation Of N--Propanolamine By Dihydroxydiperiodatonickelate(Iv) In Alkaline Medium, Jin-Huan Shan, Jing Qian, Ming-Zhu Gao, Shi-Gang Shen, Han-Wen Sun Jan 2004

Kinetics And Mechanism Of Oxidation Of N--Propanolamine By Dihydroxydiperiodatonickelate(Iv) In Alkaline Medium, Jin-Huan Shan, Jing Qian, Ming-Zhu Gao, Shi-Gang Shen, Han-Wen Sun

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The kinetics of oxidation of n--Propanolamine (n-PA) by dihydroxy diperiodato-nickelate(IV) (DPN) in alkaline medium was studied with spectrophotometry in a temperature range of 293.2-308.2 K. The reaction was found to be pseudo first-order with respect to DPN and fractional order to n-PA. The rate conatant k_{obs}, rose with an increase in the concentration of OH^{-} and a decrease in the concentration of IO_{4}^{-}. Added salts did not affect the rate and no free radical was detected. From the evaluation of linear data, a reaction mechanism is proposed which involves a pre-equilibrium of an adduct formation between n-PA and dihydroxymonoperiodatonickelate(IV) (MPN), …

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

A series of tri- and diorganotin(IV) compounds with the general formulae R_{3}SnL and R_{2}SnL_{2} (where R = Me, n-Bu, Ph and L = 2-[N-(2,6-dichloro-3-methylphenyl)-amino]benzoate) were synthesized. These compounds were characterized by different instrumental methods such as infrared, multinuclear NMR (^{1}H, ^{13}C, ^{119}Sn) and mass spectrometry. The spectroscopic investigation illustrates that the carboxylate group acts as a bidentate in solid state and as a monodentate in solution. Biological screening tests reveal that the investigated compounds have potential as antibacterial agents.

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

New adsorbents were synthesized by the sol-gel process from the product of a hydrolysis reaction and its coated form of titanium(IV)-n-propoxide for removing some heavy metal ions from aqueous solution. Titanium(IV)-n-propoxide was uncatalyst hydrolyzed with different amounts of water at room temperature and was found to react in a 1:1.6 ratio (mole of Ti:mole of H_{2}O). It was found that the condensation following the hydrolysis reaction was alcohol condensation. The hydrolysis-condensation product was characterized in detail by GC, Karl-Fischer coulometric titrator, NIR-spectroscopy, FT-IR spectroscopy, TG-DTA and elemental analysis. The hydrolysis-condensation product of titanium(IV)-n-propoxide was calcinated at 900 °C after drying …
