Crossing Borders: The Extent To Which The Voices Of Exiled And Refugee Women Have Adapted To Their New Western Diasporic Space, Jennifer Langer May 2004

Crossing Borders: The Extent To Which The Voices Of Exiled And Refugee Women Have Adapted To Their New Western Diasporic Space, Jennifer Langer

Journal of International Women's Studies

In this article I will consider the extent to which the voices of exiled and refugee women have adapted to their new Western diasporic space. I will examine whether women writers consider exile to be a safe place in which to describe the horrific experiences of gender specific persecution and of being a victim of violence in conflict or whether taboos restrict the women’s voice. Is exile providing a cathartic space to write openly? Do the exiled writers as reflected in their literary work, relate to their British physical space and interact with British people and society? What is the …

Dinner Speech - Reading Too Much Into Nothing: The Metaphor Of Place And The Internet, David Hricik May 2004

Dinner Speech - Reading Too Much Into Nothing: The Metaphor Of Place And The Internet, David Hricik

Mercer Law Review

When I was asked to speak at this dinner, I realized I was doing something I had never done before. Normally, I am given the task of speaking for ninety minutes early in the morning at Continuing Legal Education (CLE) conferences for patent lawyers. The challenge is always first, how to wake them up, especially when they are often tired and may have had a heavy dinner and drinks the night before with other attendees and, next, how do I keep them awake for ninety minutes?

Shakespeare Under Arrest: The Construction And Idea Of The Constable In Loves Labour's Lost, Much Ado About Nothing And Measure For Measure, Robert T. Mcgovern

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

"Shakespeare Under Arrest: The Construction and Idea of the Constable in Love Labour's Lost, Much Ado About Nothing, and Measure for Measure"' examines the comedic constables, Dull, Dogberry and Elbow respectively. The constables are constructed from the historical frame work that formed and informed their office. In order to properly construct the comedic constables that appear in these comedies. William Shakespeare had to have a historical frame in order to place them in the proper historical framework before his Elizabethan audiences. This work uses such sources as T.A. Critchley's, A History of Police in England and Wales and Joan R. …

Straight Away: The Meaning And Literary Function Of Εὐθὐς/Εὐθἐως In The Gospel Of Mark, Daniel Paavola May 2004

Straight Away: The Meaning And Literary Function Of Εὐθὐς/Εὐθἐως In The Gospel Of Mark, Daniel Paavola

Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation

Mark is the Gospel of breathless excitement. The narrative is noted for its rapid movement between scenes and for an urgent tone through the miracles and journeys of Jesus. With its focus upon the actions of key characters, the Gospel leads the reader quickly through the ministry of Jesus as he approaches his passion. From its opening in1:2-3 which promises a straight path ahead, the narrative moves forward to the culmination of that road at the cross.

A key in furthering this journey is the use of εὐθὐς. Used at least forty-two times in the Gospel, εὐθὐς serves as an …

An Enhanced Dialogic Reading Approach To Facilitate Typically Developing Pre-School Children's Emergent Literacy Skills., Sheri E. Davis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated an enhanced dialogic reading (DR) approach in facilitating emergent literacy skills in typically developing preschool children. Eight children from a Title One preschool and their parents participated in five weekly 90-minute training sessions that focused on phonological awareness, print awareness, and alphabet knowledge. First order effects were examined in parent questioning and interaction behaviors on pre- and post-training videotapes. Second order effects were examined in the children's outcomes from pre- to posttesting of preliteracy, speech, and language skills. Results indicated that parents made significant increases in their initiations and responses and a significant decrease in their Mean …

Jan'l Passe Li Passe: The Haitian Organization In The American Landscape, Nesly Metayer May 2004

Jan'l Passe Li Passe: The Haitian Organization In The American Landscape, Nesly Metayer

Student Scholarship

For the purpose of this research I have conducted four focus groups with a total of twenty four participants in two distinct geographical areas of the US and within two distinct organizations. I was amazed to realize while doing the data coding and data analysis that in the absence of geographical clues it was almost impossible to distinguish the focus groups from each other. How is it possible that such disparate groups of people from different educational and professional backgrounds located in such different social environments have exactly the same experience in the US-based Haitian organization? Why is it that …

"Educate Only The Bright Ones" Education And Social Capital In Jamaica, 1950-2000, Beverley J. Morgan

Student Scholarship

The work describes and probes the relationships between the institutions of elite and non-elite secondary education and selected graduates of these institutions in Jamaica over an approximately fifty-year period. It considers the curricula, pedagogy, and values of the institutions, viewed as independent variables, and the propensity of a selection of their graduates to contribute to the accumulation of social capital, through civic engagement and the display of high levels of trust, and sociability, viewed as dependent variables, The research suggests that the institutions of education are the loci of the incorporation of individual actors' stances towards the dominant society, and …

Learning From The Stones: A Go Approach To Mastering China's Strategic Concept, Shi, David Lai Dr. May 2004

Learning From The Stones: A Go Approach To Mastering China's Strategic Concept, Shi, David Lai Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

To help with the process of identifying those new and untested strategic concepts that merit further examination, the Strategic Studies Institute is publishing a special series called "Advancing Strategic Thought." This provides a venue--a safe haven--for creative, innovative, and experimental thinking about national security policy and military strategy. In this monograph, the author uses the ancient game of Go as a metaphor for the Chinese approach to strategy. He shows that this is very different than the linear method that underlies American strategy. By better understanding Go, he argues, American strategies could better understand Chinese strategy.

Writing In The Crossroads : Examining First-Year Composition And Creative Writing., Leah Schweitzer 1973- May 2004

Writing In The Crossroads : Examining First-Year Composition And Creative Writing., Leah Schweitzer 1973-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The trend in writing curriculum has been to diversify and separate courses. This dissertation looks at one set of divided curricula--creative writing and composition--in order to examine the ways in which writing pedagogy has been affected by this parceling out of writing objectives into separate niches of the English department. I argue that there should be a way for different curricula and disciplines to share information between them and to bridge arbitrary gaps created by misguided binaries. My dissertation examines some of the problematic generalities propagated within the English department and interrogates the limits of such generalities. Using what scholars …

Rewriting The Holocaust Online: A Discourse Analysis Of Holocaust Denial Web Sites, Mark Aaron Polger May 2004

Rewriting The Holocaust Online: A Discourse Analysis Of Holocaust Denial Web Sites, Mark Aaron Polger

Publications and Research

This study is undertaken to learn how Holocaust deniers use Internet websites to attain legitimacy and credibility. I attempt to show that this sort of “historical revision” is actually blanketed anti-Semitism. I examine Holocaust denial as it is viewed by different disciplines. I investigate the main figures of Holocaust denial. As well, I analyze Jewish race theories of the past two hundred years to demonstrate how Jews have been perceived as aliens and as outsiders. The construction of the “Jew as outsider” sets the stage for how Holocaust deniers frame their discourse on their web pages. My research investigates a …

International Art Therapy Program Development: An Exploratory Cultural Encounter In Ayacucho, Peru, Haley Johnstone May 2004

International Art Therapy Program Development: An Exploratory Cultural Encounter In Ayacucho, Peru, Haley Johnstone

EVMS School of Health Professions Theses & Dissertations

Humanitarian aid organizations, both domestic and international, provide health care, mental health services, education, and community development for traumatized children worldwide living in regions affected by political violence. Sparse information exists regarding the role of an art therapist within these organizations. The profession of art therapy lacks research specific to the benefits of intervention and program development within the context of an international humanitarian aid team. This thesis reviews the ethnographic research of an art therapy graduate student who explored the opportunities for art therapy within such a team.

Cultural competency was an essential component of the researcher’s success while …

Neuroscience: Its Relevance To Art Therapy And Art Therapy Education, Patrick Oates

EVMS School of Health Professions Theses & Dissertations

The development of contemporary neuroscience techniques has provided professionals in mental health fields with insight into the human brain and its functions. Literature searches revealed that there is very little research being conducted or existing literature that discusses the physiological response in the brain to the art therapy process. A more comprehensive understanding of the brain’s response to making art could enhance art therapists’ capacity to provide the most suitable treatment to meet the clients’ needs. This study was designed to explore the significance of neuroscience in art therapy, and art therapy education.

A questionnaire was emailed to 49 program …

Examining The Lived Experiences Of Out Gay And Lesbian K-12 Educators, William Dejean Edd May 2004

Examining The Lived Experiences Of Out Gay And Lesbian K-12 Educators, William Dejean Edd

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the lived experience of gay and lesbian K-12 educators who consider themselves out within the classrooms in which they teach. With gay and lesbian issues receiving increased visibility within the K-12 setting, researchers have begun to examine the experiences of gay and lesbian K-12 educators (Harbeck, 1992; Letts IV & Sears, 1999; Jennings, 1994; Kissen, 1996; Parker, 2001; Sanlo, 1999) within this context. Yet few research studies have specifically examined gay and lesbian educators who consider themselves out in the classroom in which they teach. Five gay male teachers and five lesbian …

A Study Of Technological Literacy In Writing Programs., Katherine V. Wills 1957- May 2004

A Study Of Technological Literacy In Writing Programs., Katherine V. Wills 1957-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation empirically studies computer-assisted writing administration as a site of agency for social change by inquiring how writing program administrators (WPAs) use their agency and power when developing and maintaining computer-mediated spaces (CM) or computer-assisted instruction (CAI). This study asks, What are the results when individual agency meets technological literacy in the academic workplace? Numerous articles have examined WPAs as agents of social change (R. Miller, C. Selfe, M. Pemberton); few have used empirical data as their grounds. To date, no articles have examined the WPA's agency with technological literacy in computer-mediated environments. This study utilizes triangulated and multi-modal …

The Type And Frequency Of Morphosyntax Errors In Children's Narratives., Jennifer Lynn Lockhart May 2004

The Type And Frequency Of Morphosyntax Errors In Children's Narratives., Jennifer Lynn Lockhart

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A subsample of 478 children who originally participated in a larger study (Tomblin et al., 1997) was examined for type and frequency of morphological noun and verb errors in oral and written narratives in 2nd and 4th grade. Each child represented one of four groups: Typical Language, Specific Language Impairment, Nonspecific Language Impairment, and Low Nonverbal IQ. Three MANOVA's and post-hoc comparisons were used to test three predictions: (1) children will have more difficulty with verb than noun morphology; (2) children will make more errors in the written than the spoken narratives; and (3) children whose language impairments …

The Role Of State Departments Of Education In Comprehensive School Reform, Edmund T. Hamann, Brett Lane May 2004

The Role Of State Departments Of Education In Comprehensive School Reform, Edmund T. Hamann, Brett Lane

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

States have the legal responsibility and authority to provide public education for their citizens. How each state fulfills its responsibility varies. Whether state education agencies (SEAs) are supporting school reform efforts, providing technical assistance, defining and controlling educational content, or assessing the outcomes of education, it is generally agreed that SEAs are there to assure that districts and schools are providing quality opportunities to children, and in a manner that meets the standards the state has set for achievement. With that in mind, this article addresses some of the specific ways SEAs set out to accomplish these goals. Having worked …

From Colorblindness To Intercultural Sensitivity: Infusing Diversity Training In Pete Programs, Joe W. Burden Jr., Samuel R. Hodge, Camille P. O'Bryant, Louis Harrison Jr.

Kinesiology and Public Health

In this paper, we advocate infusing diversity training across physical education teacher education (PETE) programs and curricula (DeSensi, 1995). Specifically, we call for PETE programs to provide curriculum content and professional socialization experiences that enhance intercultural sensitivity to better prepare novice teachers for working effectively with students of various cultures and ethnicities (DeSensi, 1995; Hodge, 2003). We discuss (a) changing demographics in society and schools with implications for preparing teachers, (b) moving from ethnocentricism to ethnorelativism of intercultural sensitivity, (c) implementing NCATE diversity initiatives, (d) infusing diversity training in PETE programs, and (e) understanding physical activity and sport participation patterns …
