Neologisms For The New Millennium, Ove Michaelsen
Neologisms For The New Millennium, Ove Michaelsen
Word Ways
My friend Lois Fischer refers to a one-sided conversation as a unisation. Another friend once suggested that affluential describes influence obtained by affluence. The filling of a book by negative reviews or poor promotion could be referred to as bibliocide. Comedic suicide could be called self-induced comicide. The act of home-wrecking could be a case of domicide.
Us Presidents: Transadditions, Rex Gooch
Us Presidents: Transadditions, Rex Gooch
Word Ways
Darryl Francis (W2004-25) requests transadditions of the names of eight US Presidents. There are many to choose from in each case, apart from McKinley; but this is counter-balanced by the statement of Harrison's policies, and some connections to other Presidents.

Spelling It Out, Leonard R. N. Ashley
Spelling It Out, Leonard R. N. Ashley
Word Ways
Here is some amusing wordplay. Forget "A as in Apple" and "X as in Xylophone" when people perhaps annoyingly, ask you to spell out a name. Maybe you could get by with alpha, Bravo,, and so on, but why not entertain (or exasperate) with one of the two following systems?
Onomastic Puns, Robert M. Rennick
Onomastic Puns, Robert M. Rennick
Word Ways
By far the most popular form of word play is the pun. Linguists who prefer big words call his paronomasia. What it boils down to is a word, phrase, or idiomatic expression with more than one meaning, or two words with the same sound but different meanings. The humor comes when you expect a word to mean something but it turns out unexpectedly to mean something else.

Perceptions Of Exemplary Teachers In Urban Schools, Michelle B. Goodwin
Perceptions Of Exemplary Teachers In Urban Schools, Michelle B. Goodwin
Faculty Dissertations
Regardless of increased standards created by policymakers, urban schools which serve higher populations of diverse and / or at risk students have continued to achieve at lower levels than national norms. The purpose of this study was to solicit the wisdom of exemplary teachers, recognized for their success in urban settings, to assess their perceptions of what teachers should know and do in order to positively impact student achievement within urban schools. The fundamental questions which guided this study were: 1.) What do exemplary teachers perceive teachers should know and be able to do in order to provide instruction in …
Making Persons And Selves From Lumps Of Matter, Nick Napolitan
Making Persons And Selves From Lumps Of Matter, Nick Napolitan
Macalester Journal of Philosophy
The contemporary development of naturalism has left us has in many ways ‘objectified’ our world, giving us a material world of laws and causes, that is in some ways strangely distant from our notions of ‘self.’ We might be said to possess a very strong ‘sense of self,’ and looking at our friends and neighbors, we get the impression that everybody holds similarly strong feelings. We live in a world populated by lumps of matter, but also rational agents, intricate persons, and perhaps most importantly, centered around a self. How can naturalism, without invoking the Cartesian ego, account for our …

The World Wide Web is emerging not only as an infrastructure for data, but also for a broader variety of resources that are increasingly being made available as Web services. Relevant current standards like UDDI, WSDL, and SOAP are in their fledgling years and form the basis of making Web services a workable and broadly adopted technology. However, realizing the fuller scope of the promise of Web services and associated service oriented architecture will requite further technological advances in the areas of service interoperation, service discovery, service composition, and process orchestration. Semantics, especially as supported by the use of ontologies, …

Run For The Biggest Word
Word Ways
Much has been written in Word Ways about the longest word. I've asked the question differently and come up with an answer that is far removed from those giant but unmemorable chemical and medical terms logologists are so fond of. The latter might make up a few lines in the dictionary, but the biggest word in my dictionary. Macquarie Australian Dictionary, Revised 3rd Edition 2001 (M), takes up more than a page. And the answer is ...RUN! Two other words exceed one page, GO and TAKE. The value of this exercise is to note which words are the richest - …

Fuzzy And Probabilistic Models Of Association Information In Sensor Networks, Leon Reznik, Vladik Kreinovich
Fuzzy And Probabilistic Models Of Association Information In Sensor Networks, Leon Reznik, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
The paper considers the problem of improving accuracy and reliability of measurement information acquired by sensor networks. It offers the way of integrating sensor measurement results with association information available or a priori derived at aggregation nodes. The models applied for describing both sensor sensor results and association information are reviewed with consideration given to both neuro-fuzzy and probabilistic models and methods. The information sources, typically available in sensor systems, are classified according to the model (fuzzy or probabilistic), which seems more feasible to be applied. The integration problem is formulated as an optimization problem.
Wresting And Arresting Sense In Academe: The Complicated Discursive Structures Of Female Assistant Professors, Alana M. Nicastro Edd
Wresting And Arresting Sense In Academe: The Complicated Discursive Structures Of Female Assistant Professors, Alana M. Nicastro Edd
Dissertations
Women in academe often become entangled in an intricate equation of sensemaking as they work to balance the professional demands of teaching, research, and service, while at the same time learning the political and moral meanings of being a scholar. Structuration theory offers avenues for closely examining communicative strategies women utilize to navigate their roles as assistant professors. Through intensive interviews with seven female assistant professors this research investigates their process of wresting and arresting sense of the complicated roles, rules, and structures in academe. Analysis of interview data reveals the multiple discourses that frame organizational practices that facilitate and …

Participatory Action Research With Adults With Mental Retardation : "Oh My God. Look Out World.", Rita Marie Valade
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is a participatory action research project with adults with mental retardation who reside in Louisville, Kentucky. It explores some of the history and ideologies that frequently have hindered persons with mental retardation from being regarded by others as unique individuals with various abilities. It investigates dynamics of social ostracism and the resultant silence, inclusive of the social work profession's relative absence in the field of mental retardation. Furthermore, it explores various aspects of research with persons with disabilities, and with persons with mental retardation in particular. While there have been multiple studies about persons with mental retardation, very …

The City As A Point Of Transition In The Lives Of Esmeralda Santiago And Judith Ortiz Cofer., Monica Michelle Joiner
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
United States capitalist development efforts, known as Operation Bootstrap, created an economic need for Puerto Ricans. Two authors, Esmeralda Santiago and Judith Ortiz Cofer, are both women of Puerto Rican decent who lived through this historic period. This thesis examines the lives of both "puertorriquenas" and their experiences in the cities of Paterson, New Jersey and Brooklyn, New York respectively. Becoming a woman in an urban environment stands as a unifying experience of both Ortiz Cofer and Santiago. Chapter one examines trauma as a normal part of the urban experience. Chapter two focuses on bilingual and bicultural identity and its use …

Court Review: Volume 41, Issue 1 - Jurors’ Unanswered Questions, Shari Seidman Diamond, Mary R. Rose, Beth Murphy
Court Review: Journal of the American Judges Association
American courts have rediscovered what was familiar at common law. A majority of modern courts now sanction the practice of permitting jurors to submit questions during trial. A procedure that permits jurors to submit questions is consistent with the view that juror questions can promote juror understanding of the evidence and fits with other jury innovations, like note taking and written jury instructions, that aim at optimizing juror comprehension and recall. Nonetheless, the practice of permitting juror questions has not received unanimous endorsement and adoption. Even in jurisdictions that authorize juror questions during trial, the ultimate decision as to whether …
Language Death In Mesmes: A Sociolinguistic And Historical-Comparative Examiniation Of A Disappearing Language, Michael Bryan Ahland
Language Death In Mesmes: A Sociolinguistic And Historical-Comparative Examiniation Of A Disappearing Language, Michael Bryan Ahland
Linguistics & TESOL Theses - Archive
Mesmes is a recently extinct language within the Peripheral West Gurage subgroup of the Ethio-Semitic Gurage cluster in southwestern Ethiopia. While Leslau (1979) and Hetzron (1972 and 1977), among many others, have examined the history of this cluster, little is known about the Mesmes language. The Mesmes speakers completed a shift to Hadiyya (a Cushitic language) roughly sixty years ago. This thesis considers the social history of the Mesmes in relation to the shift and death of their language and also examines the comparative evidence linking Mesmes with the Gurage cluster and, more specifically, with the Peripheral West Gurage subgroup. …
Linguistic Variation Within Gumuz: A Study Of The Relationship Between Historical Change And Intelligibility, Colleen Anne Ahland
Linguistic Variation Within Gumuz: A Study Of The Relationship Between Historical Change And Intelligibility, Colleen Anne Ahland
Linguistics & TESOL Theses - Archive
The Gumuz language is spoken by roughly 160,000 people across the Blue Nile region of Ethiopia and Sudan (Grimes 2004). Gumuz is the sole member of the Gumuz family which is part of the larger Nilo-Saharan super-family (Bender 1996a) and is considered to be a single language whose several varieties are mutually intelligible (Bender 1975, Unseth 1984). Recent studies regarding intelligibility, however, suggest the latter is not the case, documenting various levels of intelligibility between varieties, some of which are asymmetrical (Ahland et al. 2002). This thesis provides an historical analysis of Gumuz spoken in eight locations within Ethiopia and …
Code-Switching In The Speech Of Spanish-English Bilinguals, Brianna Grohman Rauschuber
Code-Switching In The Speech Of Spanish-English Bilinguals, Brianna Grohman Rauschuber
Linguistics & TESOL Theses - Archive
The purpose of this study is the investigation of (a) the motivations for code-switching; and (b) the process by which bilinguals perceive code-switching as meaningful. The empirical basis for the study is data gathered from Spanish-English bilinguals in the U.S. The results suggest that the motivations for code-switching and the conversational functions that code-switching often serves are the same. Speakers code-switch because doing so allows them to convey some meaning beyond the information contained in the proposition of an utterance. The author proposes that the communicative value of code-switching among balanced bilinguals can be explained in relation to Grice's (1975) …
Palatalization In Albanian: An Acoustic Investigation Of Stops And Affricates, Julie M. Kolgjini
Palatalization In Albanian: An Acoustic Investigation Of Stops And Affricates, Julie M. Kolgjini
Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive
Palatalization is a very common process cross-linguistically; it has been widely attested in both Indo-European (e.g. Slavic) and non-Indo-European languages (e.g. Bantu and Chinese). Palatalization can be broken down into velar palatalization (e.g. k, g > t?, dy/_ i, j) and coronal palatalization (e.g. t, d > t?, dy/__ j), whereby the targets tend to be velar and alveolar stops and the triggers are frequently non-back vowels and glides. The outputs of palatalization are often sounds formed in a different place of articulation than the original target segment and with a different manner of articulation than the target, which frequently results in …

Theses and Dissertations
Academic culture has been described as the social or normative glue that holds organizations together and guides and shapes behavior. The majority of the research that has been conducted on this subject relates to predominantly White institutions and their predominant White male faculties. The purpose of this study was to provide an in-depth account of the workplace perceptions and experiences of seven tenure-track African American female faculty members at an historically Black college and university (HBCU).
This study was qualitative research in which subject data were obtained through a series of three consecutive interviews per study participant then coded and …
The Politics Of Theater And The Theater Of Law: The Legal And Cultural Implications In Langston Hughes And John Wexley's Dramatizations Of The Scottsboro Trials, Mosby Garland Perrow Iv
The Politics Of Theater And The Theater Of Law: The Legal And Cultural Implications In Langston Hughes And John Wexley's Dramatizations Of The Scottsboro Trials, Mosby Garland Perrow Iv
Master's Theses
Collectively, the charges and convictions of nine black youths in Scottsboro in 1931 became a symbol of corruption and oppression for those interested in reshaping America's political and legal landscapes. Scottsboro instigated a decade of trials and retrials, two landmark United States Supreme Court opinions, countless dramatic interpretations, and various artistic responses. In particular, Scottsboro, Limited by Langston Hughes and They Shall Not Die by John Wexley were cultural revisions of the trials in 1931 and 1933, respectively. While both works supported the defendants, they were distinguished by their form, production and ultimate statement about the meaning of Scottsboro. These …

Nasp Standards And Rowan School Psychology Graduates: Does Knowledge Transfer To On-The-Job Skills?, Kristine E. Dipalo
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate whether Rowan University is preparing their school psychology graduates to deliver school psychology services according to professional standards set forth by NASP. This study examined the relationship between interns' self evaluations and supervisors' ratings on a measure of job performance. The information gathered was further correlated with job satisfaction. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data from the questionnaires. The results from this study indicate that there is a correlation between self-ratings and supervisors' ratings of job performance. This does not correlate with job satisfaction. The graduates of the school psychology …
