Due to the complexity of biological systems, interpretation of data obtained by a single experimental approach can often be interpreted only if viewed from a broader context, taking into account the information obtained by many diverse techniques. The vast amount of interpreted experimental data that is now available via the internet opens the possibility of collecting the relevant pieces of information that will enable scientists to form hypotheses based on the integration of this diverse information. However, the sheer volume of data that is available makes it very difficult to select the information necessary to make a coherent model of …

The Greatest Literacy Challenges Facing Contemporary High School Teachers: Implications For Secondary Teacher Preparation, Mary B. Campbell, Margaret M. Kmiecik Oct 2004

The Greatest Literacy Challenges Facing Contemporary High School Teachers: Implications For Secondary Teacher Preparation, Mary B. Campbell, Margaret M. Kmiecik

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Secondary teachers face significant challenges in their efforts to increase the literacy levels of adolescents. Encouraging teachers to speak out about these challenges and to recommend initiatives that may improve literacy practices for adolescents is vital for future reform efforts. This study examines the questions: "What are the greatest literacy challenges facing high school content area teachers?" and "What will help to diminish these challenges?" The data collection questionnaire was distributed to teachers in eight high schools throughout the greater Chicago area. A discussion of the findings suggests compelling directions for secondary teachers and teacher educators.

Reading And Writing Poetry In Math, Jan Labonty, Kathy Danielson

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Though poetry and math may seem to be unrelated, there are parallels such as rhythmic language and language skills. Reading and writing poetry about math involves students with listening, speaking, reading, and writing in order to develop and demonstrate an understanding of mathematical concepts and relationships. This article features an annotated list of mathematical poetry books and a variety of writing ideas for math poetry. Encouraging students to read and write poetry about math will encourage them to find a deeper meaning of math concepts as they develop their poetic voices.

Pernicious Ambiguity In Contracts And Statutes, Lawrence M. Solan Oct 2004

Pernicious Ambiguity In Contracts And Statutes, Lawrence M. Solan

Chicago-Kent Law Review

This Article explores pernicious ambiguity, an interpretive problem that is not adequately acknowledged by the legal system. Pernicious ambiguity occurs when the various actors involved in a dispute all believe a text to be clear, but assign different meanings to it. Depending upon how the legal system handles this situation, a case with pernicious ambiguity can easily become a crapshoot. If the judge does not take heed of the competing interpretations as reflecting a lack of clarity, and if that judge happens to understand the document in a way helpful to a particular party, that party wins. Because the document …

Did Clinton Lie?: Defining "Sexual Relations", Peter Tiersma Oct 2004

Did Clinton Lie?: Defining "Sexual Relations", Peter Tiersma

Chicago-Kent Law Review

With the impeachment proceedings against President Clinton now well behind us, we can step back and consider the matter somewhat more dispassionately. The focus of the impeachment hearings was that Clinton perjured himself and engaged in obstruction of justice. I limit my observations to the question of whether he committed perjury, and in particular, whether he lied when he denied having a sexual relationship with a White House intern, Monica Lewinsky.

When Clinton was first asked during a deposition whether he had ever had an "affair" or "sexual relationship" with Lewinsky, he quite explicitly denied it. He was asked about …

Authority Heuristics, David J. Gerber Oct 2004

Authority Heuristics, David J. Gerber

Chicago-Kent Law Review

This Article examines a characteristic of legal language that leads to unexpected and potentially harmful distortions of legal knowledge. It describes how authority heuristics distort knowledge about law in foreign legal systems. The concept of authority heuristics refers to assumptions about authority that are imbedded in cognition. The Article argues that where a legal professional in one system relies on authoritative language in another legal system, she is likely to apply authority heuristics from her own system and to that extent misinterpret information that she receives from the foreign system. The same language that provides valuable information when used by …

Common Knowledge, Communication, And Public Reason, Bruce Chapman Oct 2004

Common Knowledge, Communication, And Public Reason, Bruce Chapman

Chicago-Kent Law Review

In this Article I explain why game theory has been so unsuccessful in accounting for the role of language in social interaction. I begin by exploring some of its most basic difficulties in this respect, in games of pure coordination, and trace these difficulties back to the most fundamental organizing concepts in the theory of games, namely, Nash equilibrium and common knowledge of rationality. Nash thinkers and Nash actors, I argue, are doomed to have very impoverished conversations as Nash talkers. The sorts of conversations they will have will leave them paralyzed in games of pure coordination and largely uncooperative …

The Spanish Language Presence In Tangier, Morocco: A Sociolinguistic Perspective, Lotfi Sayahi Oct 2004

The Spanish Language Presence In Tangier, Morocco: A Sociolinguistic Perspective, Lotfi Sayahi

Languages, Literatures and Cultures Faculty Scholarship

While research on the presence of the Spanish language outside Spain and the Americas has made considerable advances in recent years, it has concerned itself primarily with the Philippines (Quilis 1992, Lipski 2001), Equatorial Guinea (Granda 1991, Lipski 1985), and less frequently with other regions where Spanish is acquiring importance as a foreign language (Quilis 2000). North Africa, on the other hand, has failed to attract similar attention in spite of its close geographic and historical links with Spain and the uninterrupted presence of the Spanish language there since the 15'h century. Few references signal such presence (Heath 1989, Silva-Corvahin …

The Empowering Role Of Enterprise Information Portals In Knowledge Management, Alireza Hejazi Oct 2004

The Empowering Role Of Enterprise Information Portals In Knowledge Management, Alireza Hejazi

E-JASL: Electronic Journal of Academic and Special Librarianship (1999-2009, Volumes 1-10)

Abstract

The increasing role of enterprise information portals (EIPs) in different applications of information, including knowledge management (KM), makes it a necessity to elaborate the issue in a more serious and scientific way. The contribution and role that these kinds of portals have in empowering KM provide a theoretical framework through which to offer a conceptual basis for present and future KM trends. So the main purpose of this article is to organize theoretical concepts discussed on EIPs in a summarized manner and provide a conceptual context for thinking and working on them. It should be noted that the perspective …

If It Ain't Broke ... : Changing Search Philosophies, John M. Weiner Oct 2004

If It Ain't Broke ... : Changing Search Philosophies, John M. Weiner

E-JASL: Electronic Journal of Academic and Special Librarianship (1999-2009, Volumes 1-10)

Abstract

This study employs simulation analyses to determine the consequences of two search philosophies. The first is called the a posteriori approach and involves terms selected arbitrarily by the user without knowledge of the specific content of the documents. The second is the a priori approach and involves terms selected because the user knows that the author employed those exact terms in describing his/her findings. Further, the authors' combinations of these terms would be known. The results of simulation studies show that the a posteriori approach was comparable to a random walk. If the need to correctly identify documents was …

We Welcome The New Immigrants, John Defrain, Rochelle L. Dalla, Douglas A. Abbott, Julie Johnson Oct 2004

We Welcome The New Immigrants, John Defrain, Rochelle L. Dalla, Douglas A. Abbott, Julie Johnson

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

From the very beginning of this project we have focused on taking a balanced approach to identifying the strengths and challenges of new immigrants in the Great Plains. Discussions of change in our world invariably focus on problems, and only occasionally on the strengths. We set out to look at new immigrants from a different perspective, in our view, a more realistic perspective: seeing the inherent strengths they possess as newcomers to our region and the gifts they bring, and examining the cultural assets the newcomers and the longer-term residents all can rely upon in working together to meet the …

Women In Honors Education: The Case Of Western Washington University, George Mariz Oct 2004

Women In Honors Education: The Case Of Western Washington University, George Mariz

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

This essay is concerned with women and their educational experience in an Honors Program, and with their educational choices. It deals briefly with the history of women in higher education in the Western world and in the light of this history compares WWU Honors women with historical trends, with men and women students in the institution, and with students nationally in terms of major choices and career aspirations. It is not an attempt to view Honors women’s education comprehensively nor to look at WWU women along side Honors women more generally. In fact, it is not possible to do so, …

Language-Related Open Archives: Impact On Scholarly Communities And Academic Librarianship, Jung-Ran Park Oct 2004

Language-Related Open Archives: Impact On Scholarly Communities And Academic Librarianship, Jung-Ran Park

E-JASL: Electronic Journal of Academic and Special Librarianship (1999-2009, Volumes 1-10)

The evolution of new forms of scholarly communication since the advent of Web technology has brought unprecedented opportunities for potential global connection among the rapidly growing number of electronic repositories among scholarly communities. Under the open archive infrastructures, scholarly resources that had been invisible to Web search engines and thus afforded limited dissemination and access are now becoming increasingly visible with speedy and wide distribution. This paper addresses the emergent issues and challenges faced by academic librarians: participation in archiving, organization, and preservation of open repositories; integration of Web-based repositories into traditional collections; and mediation and direction of academic users …

Concerns Of Hispanics And Service Providers In Southwest Missouri, James Wirth, Susan Dollar Oct 2004

Concerns Of Hispanics And Service Providers In Southwest Missouri, James Wirth, Susan Dollar

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

This descriptive study identifies the key concerns voiced by the Hispanic community and service providers in rural southwestern Missouri. Three surveys were conducted in 2001 with 381 Latino adults, Latino youth, and human service providers located in over 20 rural cities and towns throughout southwest Missouri. Demographic information, socioeconomic status, and mobility patterns of Latino respondents are profiled, and their housing, educational, and healthcare needs are reported. Language barriers, legal and documentation issues, a lack of job availability, and nonacceptance in the broader community are identified as key concerns of Latinos. Human-service providers identified language barriers, a lack of understanding …
