A Dictionary Of Middle Egyptian For Students Of Biblical Archaeology And Old Testament Studies, Robert D. Bates Jan 2004

A Dictionary Of Middle Egyptian For Students Of Biblical Archaeology And Old Testament Studies, Robert D. Bates

Dissertations

Problem. Middle Egyptian has played an increasingly important role in Biblical Archaeology and Old Testament studies. Much of biblical chronology is closely connected to Egyptian chronology; many biblical events record Egyptian involvement, and some of these are included on Egyptian monuments. A knowledge of Middle Egyptian has been crucial in understanding the historical background and cultural context of the biblical world because this phase of the Egyptian language influenced the widest range of Egyptian writing, particularly as it pertains to Old Testament history. Unfortunately, students do not have all the necessary tools for searching for unfamiliar words in Middle Egyptian. …

The Language Contact Profile, Barbara F. Freed, Dan Dewey, Norman Segalowitz, Randall Halter

Faculty Publications

Efforts to gather data of various sorts—demographics, language-learning history, contact with native speakers, use of the language in the field—as they relate to participants in SLA research studies are inherent to understanding more about language acquisition and use. Scholars frequently develop questionnaires of their own, which are rarely shared widely in the profession. Consequently, much time and effort is invested in reinventing the process of gathering the types of data that are commonly needed.

The document we present here—a questionnaire to assess second language contact for students entering and completing language study programs in various contexts of learning (academic classrooms, …

Across The Divide: The Working Lives Of African American Teachers In The Classroom, Kristen Marinus Larsen Iii

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This qualitative study examined how experienced African American teachers in predominantly African American schools perceived and conceptualized their worklives as classroom teachers, and, how they viewed their personal and professional identities in relationship to their lives as teachers. In depth interviews of 10 experienced African American teachers provided the data for the study, analyzed through the interpretative use of appropriate literature screens. The teachers understood their experience of teacher worklife and their lives as human beings through three distinct dimensions of personal and professional identity: the self, including perceptions of race and gender; the interactive dimension within the educational environment; …

Effective Teacher Management Of Disagreement In College Classroom: A Review And Extension, Jason J. Teven

Iowa Journal of Communication

The diversity present within college classrooms is becoming an increasingly important context for contrasting ideas. In an effort to extend previous research, this study sought to determine the relationships among Tolerance for Disagreement (FFD), nonverbal immediacy, and teacher evaluation in the college classroom. Respondents in the study were 229 students (107 males and 122 females) enrolled in Communication classes at a small southwestern university. The target teachers were those the participants had in the classes they took immediately prior to the class in which the data were collected. Students 'perceptions of their teachers' TFD was found to be positively related …

The Association Of Maternal Mobility History And Birth Outcomes Among Singleton Infants Born To United States Resident Mothers Of Mexican Origin, 1995-1999, Martha Slay Wingate

All ETDs from UAB

Various studies have observed that infants born to foreign-born women have better birth outcomes (lower rates of preterm, low birth weight, and infant mortality) than those delivered to U.S.-born women. Much attention has been given to the “healthy migrant effect” but no studies have examined this theory in an internally migrant population. The study purpose is to examine the association of maternal mobility history and birth outcomes among infants delivered in the U.S. while considering the influences of geographic location and socio-cultural composition, barriers that might make less healthy individuals less likely to migrate. Maternal mobility history (MMH), which refers …

Nationalizing Trademarks: A New International Trademark Jurisprudence?, Xuan-Thao Nguyen Jan 2004

Nationalizing Trademarks: A New International Trademark Jurisprudence?, Xuan-Thao Nguyen

Articles

A new international trademark jurisprudence is currently in formation that has negative impact on international trade. Indeed, this new trademark jurisprudence includes the recent phenomenon of states monopolizing the use of generic names through the elevation of such names to trademarks of national stature and the rise of global recognition and registration of geographic indication status for generic names. Professor Nguyen identifies and analyzes the new trademark jurisprudence, and critiques its impact on international trade relations and language propertization. Professor Nguyen proposes a certification mark regime to end the expansion of generic name protection and to promote fair competition.

Two 1/2-Year-Old Children Use Animacy And Syntax To Learn A New Noun, Jane B. Childers, C. H. Echols

Psychology Faculty Research

We examine how attention to animacy information may contribute to children's developing knowledge of language. This research extends beyond prior research in that children were shown dynamic events with novel entities, and were asked not only to comprehend sentences but to use sentence structure to infer the meaning of a new word. In a 4 × 3 design, animacy status (e.g., animate agent, inanimate patient) and labeling syntax (agent, patient, nonlabel control) were varied. Across most events, 21/2-year-old participants responded as if they expected animate entities to be named. However, in a prototypical (animate agent-inanimate patient) event condition, children responded …

Instructional Implications Of The Michigan Educational Assessment Program As An Accountability Instrument, Daniel J. Applegate Jan 2004

Instructional Implications Of The Michigan Educational Assessment Program As An Accountability Instrument, Daniel J. Applegate

Dissertations

Problem. In Michigan, early elementary school teachers are held accountable for instructional decisions they made based on the number of children who pass the state standardized reading test, the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP). Although state officials claim the MEAP can inform instruction, no data are regularly collected to describe reading instructional practices or the relationship between current practices and the percentage of students who pass the MEAP.

Method. Using a survey instrument, this study measured the amount of instructional time Kindergarten through Grade 4 teachers reported that they devoted to the development of 19 different components or activities within …

Reading Clarence Thomas, Kendall Thomas

Faculty Scholarship

Several years ago, a special issue of The New Yorker entitled "Black in America" included an extraordinary profile of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. Authored by Jeffrey Rosen, the article begins with an account of Justice Thomas's interventions in two of the most important cases decided during the Court's previous term. In the first of these cases, Missouri v. Jenkins, the Court was called upon to define the constitutional scope and limits of the federal judicial power to address racial concentration in Kansas City's public schools through salary increases and the creation of magnet programs. In the second …

Selecting For A Diverse Public Health Workforce - Community Health Education Mph Program For Admissi, Edward M. Mamary

Faculty Publications

The population of California continues to become more diverse; it has become increasingly important for California universities to provide graduate education to underrepresented groups and to prepare culturally competent health educators whose skills are adapted to these dynamic demographic changes. This paper describes the graduate admissions requirements of the four California-based graduate programs in Community Health Education (CHE) accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH ) and uses the graduate admissions process at San Jose State University as a case example for selecting a cohort that reflects the cultural and linguistic diversity of the state. The use …

Multiple Experts: Scientific, Medical, Media And Lay Discourses On 'New Genetics', Clare Elizabeth Wilkinson

Other Faculty of Health Theses

The significance of public relationships with scientific and medical expertise has increasingly been highlighted as an area of importance in governmental policy formulation and scientific activities. Central to this relationship has been the role of the media, frequently depicted as increasing the strained communications between science, medicine and the public in the present UK 'crisis' of expertise. Sociological research has contributed to our understandings of science, medicine, the media and lay knowledge. The research presented in this thesis correlates these contributions. It focuses on 'new genetics' to elicit the views towards communication and understanding expressed by three groups; media professionals, …

This thesis documents and describes a research project driven by the creative practice of an illustrator. It examines the proposition that the visual mark can act as a register of experience. The research comprises three bodies of work each of which address a specific issue within the broader context of the research proposition. Knowledge gained through practical exploration is discussed in the context of illustration as well as contemporary systems and models of aesthetic representation. Overview Chapter one discusses the origins of this research project and charts the establishment of a methodology. Working under the preliminary title The Illustration of …

Experiments With The Activated Presence, Joanna Louise Mayes Jan 2004

Experiments With The Activated Presence, Joanna Louise Mayes

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This thesis considers how the making of artwork can enhance or develop an experience of being present. This is done through researching what it means to be present within the moment and how this can be shared with audience. An exploration and analysis of this way of working is provided, both in terms of the research process and artwork outcomes made as a consequence of it. The entanglement of process with outcome is central, as is the interrelatedness between personal research and artworks presented to audience. Activated presence refers to a way of researching, making and presenting performative artwork; artwork …

Using Young Adult Literature : A Classic Way To Teach English, Matt B. Pries Jan 2004

Using Young Adult Literature : A Classic Way To Teach English, Matt B. Pries

Graduate Research Papers

Students are reading less, and enjoying reading less. Sticking to the same curriculum year after year in the hope that student attitude will suddenly change, that there will be an awakening in the classroom, and students will read the classics with enthusiasm cannot be done. It is a false hope. But there can be an awakening.

Using young adult literature in the high school English classroom is the solution. It will give new hope to teachers that as students come to enjoy reading, they will be more apt to, not only read more, but eventually come to read the classics. …
