Foreign Trade And The Gender Earnings Differential In Urban Mexico, Gautam Hazarika, Rafael Otero Jun 2004

Foreign Trade And The Gender Earnings Differential In Urban Mexico, Gautam Hazarika, Rafael Otero

School of Economics and Finance Faculty Publications

This paper examines the effect of foreign trade induced product market competition, upon workplace gender discrimination in urban Mexico as measured by the gender earnings differential. More than 3 decades ago, Becker (1957) argued that labor market discrimination was economically inefficient in that discriminating firms must forego a quantity of profit. Thus, firms with more market power, i.e., firms facing less competition, may be likelier to discriminate. It therefore follows that competition in product markets may reduce discrimination in labor markets. The spread of foreign trade has traditionally been a major factor in increased product market competition. Hence, Becker's thesis …

A System For Adaptive Volume Ventilation, Brad Brian May 2004

A System For Adaptive Volume Ventilation, Brad Brian

Utah Space Grant Consortium

Mechanical ventilation plays a key role in current medical practices. Its use in intensive care units, emergency departments and operating rooms has advanced the ability of medical professionals to treat compromises to the respiratory system. The first use of a mechanical means to ventilate humans began in the 16th century, but did not gain popularity among the medical community. In the 1920s Philip Drinker developed an artificial ventilation apparatus using the concept of negative pressure to mimic the normal physiology of breathing. This device came to be known as the iron lung and was used extensively in the 1950s to …

Hainesport Community Baptist Church, the church that is the subject of this project, is a small church in southern New Jersey. The project relates specifically to stirring this local church to hunger for revival, but it is hoped that the principles are applicable to any local church and its pastor.

College Students' Attitudes About Feminine And Masculine Sexuality, Kathryn Stonecipher May 2004

College Students' Attitudes About Feminine And Masculine Sexuality, Kathryn Stonecipher

Honors Theses

Sexuality is a vital part of most people's lives. Unfortunately, most people feel as though there are very different standards for what is sexually acceptable for men and what is sexually acceptable for women. There is some evidence for this, but it is a possibility that this double standard is not how college students feel today about sexuality. The study that was conducted found that both men and women thought that women's sexuality was actually more acceptable than men's sexuality. The 75 students surveyed held less conservative attitudes about what is sexually acceptable for women than for men.

A Strategy Of The Worship Renewal For The Korean Church In Postmodern Times, Yoojung Lee

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This project examines the worship in Korean churches in the postmodern era, and presents the most suitable worship model for the congregation. The Korean church is acknowledged for accomplishing one of the greatest church growths within the shortest period of time. Currently they are going through a transitional era of crisis and chaos. The worship field has not changed enough, since Christianity was introduced to this country one hundred years ago. Instead, they have had conflict between traditional and contemporary styles, unable to find the right solution. This project studied specific suggestions for implementing a strategic task, along with field …

A Survey Of Evidence For Feasting In Mycenaean Society, James C. Wright Apr 2004

A Survey Of Evidence For Feasting In Mycenaean Society, James C. Wright

Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology Faculty Research and Scholarship

The study of feasting on the Greek mainland during the Middle and Late Bronze Age provides insights into the nature of Mycenaean society. Grave goods demonstrate changes in feasting and drinking practices and their importance in the formation of an elite identity. Cooking, serving, and drinking vessels are also recorded in Linear B documents. Feasting scenes appear in the frescoes of Crete and the islands, and the Mycenaeans adapt this tradition for representation in their palaces. Feasting iconography is also found in vase painting, particularly in examples of the Pictorial Style. Mycenaean feasting is an expression of the hierarchical sociopolitical …

Review Of Women Oral History: The Frontiers Reader Edited By Susan H. Armitage With Patricia Hart And Karen Wathermon., Yuankun Yao

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

Women's Oral History: The Frontiers Reader is a collection of 21 journal articles. Edited by Susan H. Armitage, with Patricia Hart and Karen Weatherman, the book chronicles the evolution of women's oral history from its beginning in the 1970s to the present. The book documents how oral history provides an alternative perspective on history by uncovering important roles ordinary women have played-roles that have been typically ignored by mainstream history (Clegg, Miller, & Vanderhoof, 1995; Singleton, 1990).

On Writing A History Of The College Theology Society: Reviewing Fifty Years Of Theological Conversations, Sandra Yocum Mize Apr 2004

On Writing A History Of The College Theology Society: Reviewing Fifty Years Of Theological Conversations, Sandra Yocum Mize

Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications

The historian remains in many an imagination nothing more and nothing less than the purveyor of facts about the past. The historian's task appears simple, straightforward—to report the facts accurately. According to the logic of this image, once one has “the facts” about a selected topic, then the history nearly writes itself. Fortunately for the historian, even the most focused historical study demands more than setting the events in their proper order. I write “fortunately” because if the historical task were as straightforward as just described then a single history written by no particular historian would suffice on any given …

The International Criminal Court: A Sociological History, Dawn Rothe Apr 2004

The International Criminal Court: A Sociological History, Dawn Rothe

Masters Theses

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has been touted as a new international response to the worst atrocities of mankind: crimes against humanity, war crimes, and crimes of aggression. Indeed, the implementation of a permanent international court is a historical tum. However, the course to which an international criminal court transpired dates back to the late 1800's. One hundred years of political, economic, and social contradictions have aided and abated the process of what is now the International Criminal Court. However, the dialectics between actors and institutions has been neglected in historical and legal analysis. The purpose of this thesis is …

An Analysis Of Factors That Have Influenced The Evolution Of Information Assurance From World War I Through Vietnam To The Present, Kelvin B. Scott Mar 2004

An Analysis Of Factors That Have Influenced The Evolution Of Information Assurance From World War I Through Vietnam To The Present, Kelvin B. Scott

Theses and Dissertations

This study is an exploratory historical analysis of the factors that have influenced the evolution of military Information Assurance (IA) programs from World War I to the present. Although the term IA has recently been widely used throughout the Information Resource Management field (IRM), evidence indicates that information and information systems protection mechanisms were used during every U.S. Military conflict. This research proposes to increase the body of knowledge within the information systems management field by exploring the areas related to Information Assurance (IA) and the ultimate goal of U. S. Defensive Information Warfare. I found that significant events related …

Perspectives Of Pro-Revivalism: The Christian History And The Great Awakening, Lisa Thurston Brown Mar 2004

Perspectives Of Pro-Revivalism: The Christian History And The Great Awakening, Lisa Thurston Brown

Theses and Dissertations

The Christian History was a pro-revivalist magazine printed in Boston from 1743-1745 during what is known as the Great Awakening. It contained accounts of revivalism written by pro-revivalist ministers from throughout the American colonies, England and Scotland. These ministers believed that the Holy Spirit was being poured out upon the land in a shower of grace, causing unprecedented numbers of people to convert to Christ. In The Christian History, pro-revivalist ministers expressed their support for the revivals and shared their experiences. Thus the magazine has typically been viewed as religious propaganda advocating a single, polemical viewpoint. However, in spite …

Development Approaches Coupled With Verification And Validation Methodologies For Agent-Based Mission-Level Analytical Combat Simulations, Lance E. Champagne Mar 2004

Development Approaches Coupled With Verification And Validation Methodologies For Agent-Based Mission-Level Analytical Combat Simulations, Lance E. Champagne

Theses and Dissertations

This research investigated the applicability of agent-based combat simulations to real-world combat operations. An agent-based simulation of the Allied offensive search for German U-Boats in the Bay of Biscay during World War II was constructed, extending the state-of-the-art in agent-based combat simulations, bridging the gap between the current level of agent-like combat simulations and the concept of agent-based simulations found in the broader literature. The proposed simulation advances agent-based combat simulations to “validateable” mission-level military operations. Simulation validation is a complex task with numerous, diverse techniques available and levels of validation differing significantly among simulations and applications. This research presents …

Tradition And Innovation At Catholic Universities: Ideas From The Bernard Lonergan, Donna Teevan Mar 2004

Tradition And Innovation At Catholic Universities: Ideas From The Bernard Lonergan, Donna Teevan

Journal of Catholic Education

This article discusses applications of Lonergan’s thinking on tradition and innovation to the world of Catholic education. Even now, at the beginning of the 21st century and 20 years after his death, it is worthwhile to explore his understanding of tradition and innovation, with attention to how it related to the Catholic intellectual culture of his own time, and more importantly, how it might contribute to an understanding of the identity of Catholic educational institutions in today’s period of great transition. In recent years, faculty members and administrators at Catholic universities have been engaged in many discussions about the Catholic …
