The "Tabernacle Post Office" Petition For The Saints Of Kanesville, Iowa, Fred E. Woods, Maurine Carr Ward

Faculty Publications

As cold waters to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country. Thus spoke wise King Solomon a millennium before the birth of Christ. As America labored to give birth to a new nation, the United States Post Office Department was born when the Second Continental Congress met in 1775 at Philadelphia and agreed to appoint Benjamin Franklin as the country's first postmaster general. During the nineteenth century, America continued to grow in population as children were born and as immigrants crossed the Atlantic to the land of promise. This growth not only caused America to lengthen …

Efficiency And Continuity In Public Finance: The Ottoman System Of Taxation, Metin M. Cosgel Feb 2004

Efficiency And Continuity In Public Finance: The Ottoman System Of Taxation, Metin M. Cosgel

Economics Working Papers

Economic historians have recently emphasized the importance of integrating economic and historical approaches in studying institutions. The literature on the Ottoman system of taxation, however, has continued to adopt a primarily historical approach, using ad hoc categories of classification and explaining the system through its continuities with the historical precedent. This paper integrates economic and historical approaches to examine the structure, efficiency, and regional diversity of the tax system. The structure of the system made it possible for the Ottomans to economize on the transaction cost of measuring the tax base. Regional variations resulted from both efficient adaptations and institutional …

China's Domestic And International Policies On Global Warming : Explanations And Assessment, Paul G. Harris, Hongyuan Yu

CAPS Working Paper Series

Global warming and resulting climate change present the world with major and potentially devastating challenges. China is among the countries that will suffer the effects of climate change. Although its per captia emissions of pollutants causing global warming remain relatively low compared to the world’s richest countries, China is now the second largest global polluter, and in coming decades it will overtake the United States as the world’s largest polluter of the global atmosphere. How China responds to this problem has profound implications for its people, its neighbors and the world. China has joined with other countries in debating this …

Reparations To Africa And The Group Of Eminent Persons, Rhoda E. Howard-Hassmann Jan 2004

Reparations To Africa And The Group Of Eminent Persons, Rhoda E. Howard-Hassmann

Political Science Faculty Publications

In the last ten years, a worldwide movement has emerged for reparations to various previously subordinated groups for past wrongs. This paper discusses the movement for reparations to the continent of Africa. It begins with a discussion of the United Nations-sponsored World Conference against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance held in Durban, South Africa, in September 2001. It then traces the discussion of reparations to Africa back to the Group of Eminent Persons (GEP) established in the early 1990s by the Organization of African Unity to pursue reparations for slavery and (perhaps) other wrongs perpetrated on Africa. Only …

Teaching History As Creational Development, Paul Otto Jan 2004

Teaching History As Creational Development, Paul Otto

Faculty Publications - Department of History and Politics

My object in this article is to share ways that my faith commitments are mamfest m my teaching of history It should be made clear from the outset that I currently teach, and have taught, at explicitly faith-based institutions—George Fox University and Dordt College—and this fact doubtless shapes what I have done m my classes, and how I have done it First, I will briefly summarize my understanding of history m terms of creational development and the exercise of human cultural formative power and its results Then I will share a few ways my pedagogy reflects this understanding or is …

The New Negro Arts And Letters Movement Among Black University Students In The Midwest, 1914-1940, Richard M. Breaux Jan 2004

The New Negro Arts And Letters Movement Among Black University Students In The Midwest, 1914-1940, Richard M. Breaux

Black Studies Faculty Publications

The 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s were an exciting time for black artists and writers in the United States. Much of the historical literature highlights the so-called Harlem Renaissance or its successor, the Black Chicago Renaissance. Few studies, however, document the influence of these artistic movements outside major urban cities such as New York, Chicago, or Washington, DC. In his 1988 essay on black education, historian Ronald Butchart argued that the educational effects of black social movements such as the Harlem Renaissance on black schooling are unclear and underexplored. This article explores the influence of the New Negro arts and letters …

Economic Class, Social Status, And Early Scottish Chartered Accountants, Tom Lee Jan 2004

Economic Class, Social Status, And Early Scottish Chartered Accountants, Tom Lee

Accounting Historians Journal

A recent study by Jacobs [2003] examines economic class bias in the contemporary recruitment practices of public accountancy firms. The study bases its argument on a historical review that suggests such bias has its origins in early Scottish chartered accountancy. This paper challenges the Jacobs thesis by examining the notion of economic class in relation to the social status of professions, and provides archival evidence of the effects of the recruitment practices of Scottish chartered accountants from mid 19th century until the beginning of the First World War. This evidence demonstrates a dual effect. The first is a considerable change …
