Explicating Culture And Its Influence On Magazine Advertisements, Pamela Morris Jun 2004

Explicating Culture And Its Influence On Magazine Advertisements, Pamela Morris

School of Communication: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The research contributes knowledge about cultures and culture’s influence on advertisements. The study takes a macro-level perspective while identifying cultural differences that are linked to gender portrayal variations in advertisements. A model is built using 74 country economic and social statistics to arrive at cultural dimensions that are analyzed with a content analysis of magazine advertisements from 108 countries. Findings show stereotypical gender portrayals in advertisements throughout the world.

Use Of The Power Card Strategy As An Intervention With An Elementary School Student With Asperger Syndrome: Increasing On-Task Behavior In The General Education Setting, Jane M. Devenport Jun 2004

Use Of The Power Card Strategy As An Intervention With An Elementary School Student With Asperger Syndrome: Increasing On-Task Behavior In The General Education Setting, Jane M. Devenport

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

It has been slightly more than a decade since Asperger syndrome was recognized as a distinct sub-category of autism disorder and was first given a diagnostic category in the DSM-IV. An abundance of suggestions, ideas, and recommendations for treatment have been offered, yet there is only a limited amount of research that empirically evaluates these interventions. This study explores an intervention, the Power Card Strategy (PCS), previously demonstrated to be effective with improving social behaviors with a young girl with autism, by employing the student's area of special interest. An advantage to this intervention is it is relatively easy to …

The Recombinant Adeno-Associated Virus Vector (Raav2)-Mediated Apolipoprotein B Mrna-Specific Hammerhead Ribozyme: A Self-Complementary Aav2 Vector Improves The Gene Expression, Shumei Zhong, Shihua Sun, Ba-Bie Teng Jun 2004

The Recombinant Adeno-Associated Virus Vector (Raav2)-Mediated Apolipoprotein B Mrna-Specific Hammerhead Ribozyme: A Self-Complementary Aav2 Vector Improves The Gene Expression, Shumei Zhong, Shihua Sun, Ba-Bie Teng

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

BACKGROUND: In humans, overproduction of apolipoprotein B (apoB) is positively associated with premature coronary artery diseases. To reduce the levels of apoB mRNA, we have designed an apoB mRNA-specific hammerhead ribozyme targeted at nucleotide sequences GUA6679 (RB15) mediated by adenovirus, which efficiently cleaves and decreases apoB mRNA by 80% in mouse liver and attenuates the hyperlipidemic condition. In the current study, we used an adeno-associated virus vector, serotype 2 (AAV2) and a self-complementary AAV2 vector (scAAV2) to demonstrate the effect of long-term tissue-specific gene expression of RB15 on the regulation apoB mRNA in vivo. METHODS: We constructed a hammerhead ribozyme …

The Evil Of Administrative Ethics, Melvin J. Dubnick, Jonathan B. Justice Jun 2004

The Evil Of Administrative Ethics, Melvin J. Dubnick, Jonathan B. Justice

Faculty Publications

One recent development in the literature concerned with administrative ethics has been an explicit concern with defining and then preventing or redressing a variety of forms of so-called administrative evil. Definitions of evil encompass a range of behaviors and consequences ranging from the genuinely horrific to the merely unpleasant. This essay locates the concern with administrative evil within the context of post-Enlightenment Western philosophers’ efforts to come to grips with ethically or metaphysically incomprehensible wrongs. In this context, “evil” can be understood as a social constructed category of agents and acts which is specific to particular moral communities and so …

Journalism Excellence, Philanthropic Generosity, Literary Scholarship And Human Rights Activism Recognized At Lawrence University’S 155th Commencement, Lawrence University

Press Releases

For the 25th — and final — time, Lawrence University President Richard Warch will lead the procession of seniors and honored guests to the stage where he’ll award honorary doctorates, confer bachelor’s degrees and congratulate students for completing their undergraduate education Sunday, June 13 during the college’s 155th commencement. Graduation ceremonies begin at 10:30 a.m. on the Main Hall green.

Warch will retire as Lawrence’s second-longest serving president at the end of the month. He is currently the longest-standing president of any college or university in Wisconsin and believed to be one of only 20 current presidents in the country …

Mean Response Models Of Repeated Measurements In Presence Of Varying Effectiveness Onset, Ying Qing Chen, Su-Chun Cheng Jun 2004

Mean Response Models Of Repeated Measurements In Presence Of Varying Effectiveness Onset, Ying Qing Chen, Su-Chun Cheng

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Repeated measurements are often collected over time to evaluate treatment efficacy in clinical trials. Most of the statistical models of the repeated measurements have been focusing on their mean response as function of time. These models usually assume that the treatment has persistent effect of constant additivity or multiplicity on the mean response functions throughout the observation period of time. In reality, however, such assumption may be confounded by the potential existence of the so-called effectiveness action onset, although they are often unobserved or difficult to obtain. Instead of including nonparametric time-varying coefficients in the mean response models, we propose …

Genetic Parameters For Six Measures Of Length Of Productive Life And Three Measures Of Lifetime Production By 6 Yr After First Calving For Hereford Cows, R. M. Koch, L. V. Cundiff, K. E. Gregory, L. Dale Van Vleck

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Genetic parameters for length of productive life given the opportunity (LPL|O), measured as days between first calving and disposal conditioned on one of six opportunity groups, L1 through L6 (e.g., L2 is length of productive life in days given the opportunity to live 2 yr after first calving), and lifetime production (LP), measured as the number of calves born (NB), number of calves weaned (NW), and cumulative weaning weight (CW) by 6 yr after first calving, were estimated using records of 1,886 Hereford cows from a selection experiment with three selected lines and a control line. Weaning weights were adjusted …
