The Bane Of Surrogate Decision Making: Defining The Best Interests Of Never-Competent Persons, Norman L. Cantor
The Bane Of Surrogate Decision Making: Defining The Best Interests Of Never-Competent Persons, Norman L. Cantor
Rutgers Law School (Newark) Faculty Papers
The medical fate of never-competent persons cannot be resolved according to the approach governing previously competent persons -- surrogate focus on self-determination via advance instructions or projections of what the now-incompetent person would want in the circumstances. For never-competent medical patients, the commonly stated approach to surrogate decision making is best interests of the incapacitated ward.
This article examines and questions the conventional wisdom regarding a "best interests of the patient" standard. When a parent is the surrogate decision maker, the medical course chosen need not be the best course, so long as it is a plausible medical option and …
Conduct, Learning, And Substance Use Disorders In An Adolescent Male: A Case Study, Dana F. Wales
Conduct, Learning, And Substance Use Disorders In An Adolescent Male: A Case Study, Dana F. Wales
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this case study was to examine best practice interventions for an individual diagnosed with Conduct, Learning, and Substance Use Disorders. Empirically supported research was evaluated and compared to normative practices of the agency where the client resided. The intervention process included a psychosocial assessment, Differential Diagnosis as well as multiple levels of intervention. Outcome measures were used to assess depression, anxiety, and coping skills. However, a lack of cooperation and follow through by the client and his family invalidated these measures. Clinical observations and staff reports indicated that the overall intervention had mixed results with this client. …

Addressing The Mental Health Needs Of The Rural Underserved: Findings From A Multiple Case Study Of A Behavioral Telehealth Project, Richard Bischoff, Cody S. Hollist, Craig W. Smith, Paul Flack
Addressing The Mental Health Needs Of The Rural Underserved: Findings From A Multiple Case Study Of A Behavioral Telehealth Project, Richard Bischoff, Cody S. Hollist, Craig W. Smith, Paul Flack
Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications
Behavioral telehealth is a reasonable solution to the accessibility to mental health care problem that exists in many rural communities. This paper reports the results of a multiple case study of a behavioral telehealth program administered through a marriage and family therapy training program. The results suggest that mental health services can be effectively delivered using existing distance education technology to underserved rural populations. Rural communities have unique barriers to accessing mental health care, some of which can be overcome through the distance delivery of services and some of which cannot. In order to effectively deliver treatment, accommodations to the …

Postlarval Fitness Of Transgenic Strains Of Cochliomyia Hominivorax (Diptera: Calliphoridae), Margaret L. Allen, Dennis Berkebile, Steven R. Skoda
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Eight transgenic strains of Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) were compared with the wild-type parental laboratory strain (P95) in colony. Measurements of average weight of pupae, percentage of adults emerging from pupae, ratio of males to total emerged adults, and mating competitiveness were analyzed. The parental strain colony was subcultured and exposed to handling procedures equivalent to transgenic strains for valid comparison of overall colony fitness. None of the transgenic colonies exhibited significantly lower fitness characteristics than the control parental colony. One transgenic colony had a higher ratio of adults emerging from pupae, and five colonies had higher average pupal …

Risk Factors For Pre-Post Monsoon Cholera Epidemics In Bangladesh From 1992-1994, Rhonda Rae Robb
Risk Factors For Pre-Post Monsoon Cholera Epidemics In Bangladesh From 1992-1994, Rhonda Rae Robb
Dissertations and Theses
The primary objective of this thesis is to differentiate between the risk factors for pre-and post-monsoon cholera epidemics in rural Bangladesh by analyzing the complex interaction between select environmental, cultural/behavioral, and socioeconomic variables over space and time. In rural Bangladesh, cholera epidemics correspond with the annual monsoon: the first, and smallest, occurs between March and June, while the larger cholera peak occurs between September and December. The differences between the spatial and temporal patterns of seasonal cholera are analyzed, and the risk factors are calculated for pre-and post-monsoon cholera epidemics.
The theoretical approach that underlies this medical geographical study is …

Multiple Testing Methods For Chip-Chip High Density Oligonucleotide Array Data, Sunduz Keles, Mark J. Van Der Laan, Sandrine Dudoit, Simon E. Cawley
U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series
Cawley et al. (2004) have recently mapped the locations of binding sites for three transcription factors along human chromosomes 21 and 22 using ChIP-Chip experiments. ChIP-Chip experiments are a new approach to the genome-wide identification of transcription factor binding sites and consist of chromatin (Ch) immunoprecipitation (IP) of transcription factor-bound genomic DNA followed by high density oligonucleotide hybridization (Chip) of the IP-enriched DNA. We investigate the ChIP-Chip data structure and propose methods for inferring the location of transcription factor binding sites from these data. The proposed methods involve testing for each probe whether it is part of a bound sequence …
Combining Predictors For Classification Using The Area Under The Roc Curve, Margaret S. Pepe, Tianxi Cai, Zheng Zhang
Combining Predictors For Classification Using The Area Under The Roc Curve, Margaret S. Pepe, Tianxi Cai, Zheng Zhang
UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series
We compare simple logistic regression with an alternative robust procedure for constructing linear predictors to be used for the two state classification task. Theoritical advantages of the robust procedure over logistic regression are: (i) although it assumes a generalized linear model for the dichotomous outcome variable, it does not require specification of the link function; (ii) it accommodates case-control designs even when the model is not logistic; and (iii) it yields sensible results even when the generalized linear model assumption fails to hold. Surprisingly, we find that the linear predictor derived from the logistic regression likelihood is very robust in …

A Case Study To Determine Best Practice Treatment For A Child Diagnosed With Asperger's Syndrome And Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Amy Schumacher
A Case Study To Determine Best Practice Treatment For A Child Diagnosed With Asperger's Syndrome And Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Amy Schumacher
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this case study was to determine the best practice model of therapy to treat a child diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder. The participant was an eight-year-old Caucasian male who had significant developmental delays. The Behavior Assessment System for Children was used in order to assess the progress John made in the therapeutic setting of which he had been attending. Intervention components included a psychosocial assessment, differential diagnosis, a behavior treatment plan, psychotropic medication and social skills training. A client satisfaction survey was also administered. The normative practice of the agency was compared with empirically …

Adequacy Of Representation' In Time (Or Why The Result In Stephenson Is Correct), David A. Dana
Law and Economics Papers
This essay sketches a Rawlsian defense of allowing subsequent challenges to class action settlements, as in the Stephenson agent orange case and the Homeside Bank Boston case. My normative claim is that the Rawlsian original position is a helpful way of thinking about what a fair distribution among class members entails that is, we should ask whether a settlement conceivably could have been agreed to by class members standing behind a veil of ignorance as to what their particular position or place within the class would be beyond the veil. Subsequent challenges to settlements should be permitted where no reasonable …
