OBJECTIVE: Although all newborns in Iran have been vaccinated against hepatitis B since March 1993, routine screening of pregnant women has not been conducted in prenatal care programs, yet transmission of hepatitis B via the maternal-fetal route is still a viable likelihood, which must be entertained. METHODS: The subjects were divided into 2 groups. The exposed group comprised 97 vaccinated children whose mothers were seropositive for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and had not received hepatitis immunoglobulin at birth. The unexposed group consisted of 87 vaccinated children whose mothers were seronegative for hepatitis B surface antigen. We compared these 2 …

Chronic Strain, Daily Work Stress, And Pain Among Workers With Rheumatoid Arthritis: Does Job Stress Make A Bad Day Worse?, Judith Fifield, Julia Mcquillan, Stephen Armeli, Howard Tennen, Susan Reisine, Glenn Affleck

Bureau of Sociological Research: Faculty Publications

The structure of the job and the daily experience of work are challenges for workers with rheumatoid arthritis. Yet little is known about how these two factors interact to put workers with chronic pain at risk for worse pain on a given day. This exploratory 20 workday diary study of 27 workers with rheumatoid arthritis used hierarchical linear modeling to examine how the structure of the job and neuroticism moderate the relationship between daily undesirable work events (daily stressors), and pain reports within a day. On days with more undesirable work events compared to days with fewer events, individuals with …

Members of 2 species of Synhimantus (Dispharynx) live under the lining of the gizzard in passerine birds from the Área de Conservación Guanacaste, Costa Rica. Synhimantus (Dispharynx) nasuta (Rudolphi, 1819) occurs in Thraupis episcopus, Turdus grayi, Caryothraustes poliogaster, Platyrinchus cancrominus, Ramphocaenus melanurus, Vermivora peregrina, and Geothlypis poliocephala. A single male, in Turdus grayi, apparently representing a new species, distinguishable from all other species of Synhimantus (Dispharynx) by having similar shaped left and right spicules, is described but not named.

Himmelfarb Library Faculty Posters and Presentations

This poster represents the culmination of a year’s work by the Journals@Himmelfarb committee. This intra-library committee was formed to discuss the critical issues surrounding transitioning print journal subscriptions to electronic access only. In response to these discussions, collection development policies were created to reflect both print and electronic resources, a model electronic license was created, and faculty department heads were surveyed as to the usefulness and format preference for titles in their subject area. This resulted in improved understanding of the existing collection and assisted in developing the first steps for migrating from a print to an electronic collection.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the gender-specific longitudinal association between quadriceps strength and self-reported, physician-diagnosed hip or knee osteoarthritis (OA).

Methods: Subjects were 3081 community-dwelling adults who were free of OA, joint symptoms and injuries, completed a maximum treadmill exercise test, had isokinetic knee extension and flexion and isotonic leg press strength measurements taken at baseline and returned at least one written follow-up survey. Multivariate logistic regression was used to estimate odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals.

Results: Women with moderate or high isokinetic quadriceps strength had a significantly reduced risk (55% to 64%) of hip …

Perceptions Of The Cooperative Extension Service: A Community Resource For Youth And Family Programs, Claudia Mincemoyer, Daniel Perkins, Catherine Lillehoj

Journal of Extension

PROSPER (PROmoting School-community-university Partnerships to Enhance Resilience) is a prevention partnership involving the Cooperative Extension Service (CES), local schools, and community agencies. PROSPER collaborative teams were formed in 14 communities in Iowa and 14 in Pennsylvania to address risk reduction, competence-building, and positive youth development. The study discussed here examined perceptions of CES personnel compared to other PROPSER team members regarding the CES: as a source of youth and family programming; its commitment to fostering school and community-based prevention programs; and as a leading force in improving the lives of youth and families.

Building Character Through 4-H School Partnerships, Sherry Nickles, Vicki Reed, Rebecca J. Cropper, Kathryn J. Cox

Journal of Extension

Since 1997, Ohio 4-H has participated in the Ohio Partnership for Character Education (OPCE) and conducted successful 4-H school character education programs. Three programs are highlighted in this article, along with four recommendations for future 4-H school character education partnerships: youth character education should be a priority need in communities served by the partnership; schools should be open to partnerships with community organizations; the wealth of character education curricula should be reviewed to select resources which meet local needs; and funding for the continuation of successful pilot programs should be secured early.

The Intergenerational Transmission Of Violence As Seen In College Dating And Religiousness As A Moderator, Justin Alexander Dewberry Oct 2004

The Intergenerational Transmission Of Violence As Seen In College Dating And Religiousness As A Moderator, Justin Alexander Dewberry

Senior Honors Theses

Literature concerning the intergenerational transmission of violence has a strong foundation of data that supports specific causes for the transmission. What is lacking are studies that focus on moderating the cycle of the intergenerational transmission of violence. This study looked for a correlation between witnessing abuse as a child and dating violence in college undergraduate females. Religiousness was looked at as a moderator that would hinder the transmission of violence into a dating relationship. The sample consisted of 101 college female undergraduates at one liberal arts, all female institution; one liberal arts, coeducational, religiously affiliated institution; and one liberal arts, …
