Deadline Analysis Of Interrupt-Driven Software, Dennis Brylow, Jens Palsberg Oct 2004

Deadline Analysis Of Interrupt-Driven Software, Dennis Brylow, Jens Palsberg

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Real-time, reactive, and embedded systems are increasingly used throughout society (e.g., flight control, railway signaling, vehicle management, medical devices, and many others). For real-time, interrupt-driven software, timely interrupt handling is part of correctness. It is vital for software verification in such systems to check that all specified deadlines for interrupt handling are met. Such verification is a daunting task because of the large number of different possible interrupt arrival scenarios. For example, for a Z86-based microcontroller, there can be up to six interrupt sources and each interrupt can arrive during any clock cycle. Verification of such systems has traditionally relied …

Dna Binding Provides A Molecular Strap Activating The Adenovirus Proteinase, Mark R. Chance Oct 2004

Dna Binding Provides A Molecular Strap Activating The Adenovirus Proteinase, Mark R. Chance

Faculty Scholarship

Human adenovirus proteinase (AVP) requires two cofactors for maximal activity: pVIc, a peptide derived from the C terminus of adenovirus precursor protein pVI, and the viral DNA. Synchrotron protein footprinting was used to map the solvent accessible cofactor binding sites and to identify conformational changes associated with the binding of cofactors to AVP. The binding of pVIc alone or pVIc and DNA together to AVP triggered significant conformational changes adjacent to the active site cleft sandwiched between the two AVP subdomains. In addition, upon binding of DNA to AVP, it was observed that specific residues on each of the two …

Of Parts And Wholes: Self-Similarity And Synecdoche In Science, Culture And Literature, Dirk Vanderbeke Oct 2004

Of Parts And Wholes: Self-Similarity And Synecdoche In Science, Culture And Literature, Dirk Vanderbeke

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[Editors' Introduction]

The discussion here centers on how self-similarity, or parts resembling a whole, has been a recurring aspect in the most diverse fields of human thinking from antiquity to the present. Primary examples are drawn from physics, biology, cybernetics, alchemy, philosophy, myth and, of course, language and literature. The author argues that self-similar patterns are one of the persistent ways in which the human mind structures its experience and knowledge of the world, and then examines some of the questions that arise when an almost ubiquitous concept, structure or linguistic and literary phenomenon resurfaces in a new guise in …

Some Reflections On The Use Of Administrative Data To Estimate The Net Impacts Of Workforce Programs In Washington State, Kevin Hollenbeck Oct 2004

Some Reflections On The Use Of Administrative Data To Estimate The Net Impacts Of Workforce Programs In Washington State, Kevin Hollenbeck

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

The purpose of this paper is to reflect on the results, methodology, and processes used in a series of net labor market impact studies done for the State of Washington over the past six years. All of the studies relied on administrative data and used a technique referred to as quasi-experimental evaluation. The program interventions were the federal- and state-funded workforce development programs. The paper sets out eight "reflections" for analysts and policy makers to consider. These reflections identify lessons learned and uncertainties or issues that need more consideration and scrutiny.

Integrating Ecology And Relating Natural Systems To Agriculture: An Increased Priority For Extension Agricultural Programming, Kyle Cecil Oct 2004

Integrating Ecology And Relating Natural Systems To Agriculture: An Increased Priority For Extension Agricultural Programming, Kyle Cecil

Journal of Extension

Extension must modify its historical agricultural educational emphasis from one addressing primarily the production of food to one that addresses the production of food in a system encompassing the goals of individuals, society, and the environment. In the search to incorporate more ecological rationale into agricultural production, Extension educators should develop a deeper understanding of the nature of agroecosystems and the principles and processes by which they function. A contemporary Extension agricultural program that understands agroecology and believes in the need for a more sustainable production system will lead the way toward a more profitable and environmentally friendly agriculture.

Are All These Rules Necessary? Extension Pesticide Programming With A Regulatory Purpose, Jimmy T. Bricker, Andrew G. Martin, Cheri L. Janssen, Fred Whitford Oct 2004

Are All These Rules Necessary? Extension Pesticide Programming With A Regulatory Purpose, Jimmy T. Bricker, Andrew G. Martin, Cheri L. Janssen, Fred Whitford

Journal of Extension

Indiana's private applicator recertification program includes state-required, pesticide regulatory topics. This article explores the relationship between Indiana private applicators' dual attitudes towards pesticide handling practices and the pesticide regulations that mandate those practices. Newly recertified private applicators in northwest Indiana were surveyed by a mailed questionnaire. Respondents valued responsible pesticide management practices, but were collectively undecided about regulatory oversight of their pesticide handling activities. These results suggest that Extension pesticide safety educators involved in compliance education may improve their training curriculum by including material on the underlying benefits, personal and social, of pesticide regulation.

Machinery Cost Estimates For Amish Farms, Randall E. James Oct 2004

Machinery Cost Estimates For Amish Farms, Randall E. James

Journal of Extension

Agricultural enterprise budgets are helpful for modern farms. However, the lack of machinery costs for horse-drawn farms makes it difficult for Extension workers to adapt these budgets to Amish farms. A 2002 study estimated machinery costs on Amish farms in Geauga County, Ohio. Data was collected directly from groups of Amish farmers. The article also introduces the concept of including "horse days" in the total cost estimate. Extension workers in any of the over 30 states with Amish settlements could use information in this study to customize enterprise budgets into realistic educational tools for Amish farms.

Family Violence Education In Public Waiting Rooms, Patrick Day, Molly Latham, Geoffrey K. Leigh Oct 2004

Family Violence Education In Public Waiting Rooms, Patrick Day, Molly Latham, Geoffrey K. Leigh

Journal of Extension

Accepting the premise that video instruction is a powerful tool for American audiences, the project discussed here explored the feasibility of using television and videotapes to provide education relevant to family violence and violence prevention to waiting room audiences. Using commercially available videos, volunteer coordinators played the videos to clients of a large social services agency in Las Vegas, Nevada over a period of 18 months. At the end of each viewing, a survey measured the impact of the videos on the audience. Results of the surveys supported the efficacy of this instructional method in providing education to large groups.

Teaching Catholicism, As Easy As Play., Tj Lynch Oct 2004

Teaching Catholicism, As Easy As Play., Tj Lynch

Plymouth Institute of Education

In society, sport often connotes a religious reference. Sport as a medium for learning is directly related to the curriculum key learning area of Health and Physical Education (HPE), as it can be used as a vehicle for teaching the HPE concepts. The unique ‘learning through movement’ nature of HPE enables a focus on the physical dimension. Hence, sport interacts intimately with the strand ‘developing concepts and skills for physical activity’, which is embedded in the Queensland HPE syllabus. In the physical dimension students can be presented with many practical and social experiences that require acknowledgement and reflection upon Catholic …

Answering The Earthquake, Thomas G. Plante Oct 2004

Answering The Earthquake, Thomas G. Plante

Psychology

During the past several years, the American Catholic Church has suffered an enormous earthquake due to the child sexual abuse crisis that was initially reported on January 6, 2002 by the Boston Globe Spotlight Team. Although the sexual abuse of children by priests had been in the news many times before, the recent case in Boston 14 Conversations resulted in perhaps the largest earthquake ever in the American Catholic Church. While the epicenter of the quake was centered in Boston, there were many significant aftershocks felt across the land. Sadly, Jesuits and Jesuit universities were not immune from the recent …
