Measuring Marketing Productivity: Current Knowledge And Future Directions, Roland T. Rust, Tim Ambler, Gregory S. Carpenter, V. Kumar, Rajendra Kumar Srivastava

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

For too long, marketers have not been held accountable for showing how marketing expenditures add to shareholder value. As time has gone by, this lack of accountability has undermined marketers' credibility, threatened the standing of the marketing function within the firm, and even threatened marketing's existence as a distinct capability within the firm. This article proposes a broad framework for assessing marketing productivity, cataloging what is already known, and suggesting areas for further research. The authors conclude that it is possible to show how marketing expenditures add to shareholder value. The effective dissemination of new methods of assessing marketing productivity …

Longevity Research And Bioethics, Robert A. Bohrer Oct 2004

Longevity Research And Bioethics, Robert A. Bohrer

Faculty Scholarship

AS THE PACE OF SCIENTIFIC ADVANCE accelerates and the era of globalization brings new threats as well as new promises, the world of biotechnology is increasingly forced to confront bioethical issues that once would have been merely theoretical discussions of purely speculative issues in the distant future. This article is intended to provide a perspective on the general problem of ethical frameworks in social decision making and provide an introduction to three fundamental ethical systems: utilitarianism, Kantianism, and Rawlsian justice or fairness. Those frameworks can be used to discuss most areas of significant ethical controversy in biotechnology; however, the focus …

Adherence Of Prime-Time Television Advertising Disclosures To The “Clear And Conspicuous" Standard: 1990 Vs. 2002, Mariea Grubbs Hoy, J. Craig Andrews Oct 2004

Adherence Of Prime-Time Television Advertising Disclosures To The “Clear And Conspicuous" Standard: 1990 Vs. 2002, Mariea Grubbs Hoy, J. Craig Andrews

Marketing Faculty Research and Publications

In 1990, one-fourth of all national television commercials contained disclosures, yet none of the disclosures adhered to all of the Federal Trade Commission's "clear and conspicuous" standard (CCS). As a result of marketplace changes and a 2001 Federal Trade Commission and National Advertising Division joint workshop, the authors anticipate an increase in the number of disclosures and greater adherence to the CCS. The authors find a significant increase in disclosure incidence; however, adherence declines or remains unchanged for most individual guidelines. Finally, the authors provide public policy implications and offer suggestions to increase adherence to the CCS.

Biology Faculty Articles

The cytosine deaminase APOBEC3G, in the absence of the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) accessory gene HIV-1 viral infectivity factor (vif), inhibits viral replication by introducing G→A hypermutation in the newly synthesized HIV-1 DNA negative strand. We tested the hypothesis that genetic variants of APOBEC3G may modify HIV-1 transmission and disease progression. Single nucleotide polymorphisms were identified in the promoter region (three), introns (two), and exons (two). Genotypes were determined for 3,073 study participants enrolled in six HIV-AIDS prospective cohorts. One codon-changing variant, H186R in exon 4, was polymorphic in African Americans (AA) (f < 37%) and rare in European Americans (f < 3%) or Europeans (f …

Assessment Of A Body Composition-Focused Approach To Obesity Treatment, Beverly D. Hall Oct 2004

Assessment Of A Body Composition-Focused Approach To Obesity Treatment, Beverly D. Hall

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Obesity is a significant United States’ public health concern. However, high relapse rates continue to be a problem for obesity treatment programs while the focus remains on weight loss, not body composition change. This study examined whether a clinic-based obesity treatment program, focused on body composition change through resistance training, lead to improved body composition, exercise behaviors, and attitude change from focus on weight loss to body composition change. Improvements in self efficacy, outcome expectations and stages of change were also examined. Forty-eight physician-referred overweight or obese adult women (mean body fat 41%, SD = 6.65%), completed assessments and questionnaires …

An Examination Of Patents, Licensing, Research Tools, And The Tragedy Of The Anticommons In Biotechnology Innovation, Michael S. Mireles Oct 2004

An Examination Of Patents, Licensing, Research Tools, And The Tragedy Of The Anticommons In Biotechnology Innovation, Michael S. Mireles

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

The continued development of and affordable access to potentially life saving pharmaceuticals, gene therapies and diagnostics is unquestionably a socially important issue. However, crafting government policy to encourage the development of and allowing affordable access to those services and products is difficult. On one hand, the development of those services and products requires a large investment of funds because of the complexity, collaborative nature, and uncertainty of the development of those products and services. Accordingly, investors require the safety of strong and stable patent rights to ensure a return on their investment in the development of a commercial end-product or …

Public Nuisance Claims Against Gun Sellers: New Insights And Challenges, Jean Macchiaroli Eggen, John G. Culhane Oct 2004

Public Nuisance Claims Against Gun Sellers: New Insights And Challenges, Jean Macchiaroli Eggen, John G. Culhane

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

Gun violence continues unabated. Regulation of these deadly instruments is woefully inadequate, and legislatures are compounding the problem by barring or restricting access to the courts for the death and injuries that guns cause. In short, Congress and state legislators have repeatedly acquiesced to the demands of the gun lobby.

During the past several years, cities have struck back by filing public nuisance claims against those gun sellers whose practices pose a risk to the public's health and safety. After a slow start, public nuisance claims have recently gained traction in state appellate courts, which are increasingly coming to realize …

The paper culminates in a series of recommendations for future research. It is hoped that these will help to move the field from documenting the differences or similarities of leadership (or perceptions of leadership) between women and men, to studying why these differences might exist. Additional recommendations are included that will help transport the value of this research from the pages …

Occipital Nerve Block Rapidly Eliminates Allodynia Far From The Site Of Headache: A Case Report, William B. Young, Valentin Mateos, Avi Ashkenazi Oct 2004

Occipital Nerve Block Rapidly Eliminates Allodynia Far From The Site Of Headache: A Case Report, William B. Young, Valentin Mateos, Avi Ashkenazi

Department of Neurology Faculty Papers

Seventy to 80% of persons with migraine develop allodynia during the course of a severe attack. During a migraine attack, allodynia spreads topographically to extratrigeminal territory. Dynamic mechanical allodynia, otherwise known as brush allodynia (BA), is a subtype of allodynia that is easily tested. Ashkenazi & Young recently reported on the immediate benefits of greater occipital nerve (GON) block on brush allodynia and pain in migraine and in cluster headache. In these studies, testing was performed at fixed sites in the trigeminal and cervical distributions. Allodynia in thoracic dermatomes was not studied.

The Inclusive Command: Voluntary Integration Of Sexual Minorities Into The U.S. Military, Jennifer Gerarda Brown, Ian Ayres Oct 2004

The Inclusive Command: Voluntary Integration Of Sexual Minorities Into The U.S. Military, Jennifer Gerarda Brown, Ian Ayres

Michigan Law Review

Many opponents of gays in the military will accept the proposition that gay and lesbian soldiers, most of them closeted, have served their country bravely and well. General Colin Powell has referred to gay service members as "proud, brave, loyal, good Americans" who have "served well in the past and are continuing to serve well." General H. Norman Schwartzkopf agrees: "homosexuals have served in the past and have done a great job serving their country." What these opponents find harder to accept is the proposition that heterosexual people can effectively serve their country if openly gay people are in the …

Cost-Benefit Analysis And The Environment, Cass R. Sunstein Oct 2004

Cost-Benefit Analysis And The Environment, Cass R. Sunstein

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

This review-essay explores the uses and limits of cost-benefit analysis in the context of environmental protection, focusing on three recent books: Priceless, by Frank Ackerman and Lisa Heinzerling; Cellular Phones, Public Fears, and A Culture of Precaution, by Adam Burgess; and Catastrophe: Risk and Response, by Richard A. Posner. The review-essay emphasizes three principal limitations on the use of cost-benefit analysis. First, it is important to distinguish between the easy cases for cost-benefit analysis, in which the beneficiaries of regulation pay all or almost all of its cost, from the harder cases, in which the beneficiaries pay little for the …

Punishment: Benefits, Risks, And Alternatives In A Business Setting, Chris Vaden Oct 2004

Punishment: Benefits, Risks, And Alternatives In A Business Setting, Chris Vaden

Senior Honors Theses

Punishment is utilized in many settings in the world today, but it is continually getting more negative responses for its use in the workplace. Punishment's main use is to decrease the occurrence of a behavior that is undesirable. In a business setting, this would most likely be a behavior that is a violation of policy or unsatisfactory work performance. A comparison of the positive aspects of punishment with its negative features, by utilizing information provided by scholarly journals and websites along with a survey of 31 employees, has yielded the results that there may be a better alternative to punishment.
