Job Satisfaction In Nonprofit Organizations: The Factors That Influence Employee Job Satisfaction At Goodwill Industries Of Greater Grand Rapids, Inc., Andrea L. Speers Oct 2004

Job Satisfaction In Nonprofit Organizations: The Factors That Influence Employee Job Satisfaction At Goodwill Industries Of Greater Grand Rapids, Inc., Andrea L. Speers

Masters Theses

Research shows there are several variables that influence employee job satisfaction, including salary, benefits, job tasks, autonomy and independence, relationships with supervisors and coworkers, communication from management, vacation time, and professional development opportunities. Nonprofit organizations face increased challenges with employee job satisfaction issues because they lack the budget to be competitive with for-profit organizations in terms of salary and benefits.

For the purpose of this study, the researcher defines "hard" variables as those that are concrete and can be measured, including salary and benefits, and “soft” variables as those that are less measurable and more relational in nature, including relationships …

Mine An Anthology Of Reproductive Rights, Meredith Stern Oct 2004

Mine An Anthology Of Reproductive Rights, Meredith Stern

Faculty & Librarian Work

This is the second edition of a zine called "Mine" which was an anthology of abortion stories. This edition has 14 stories. Stories include a home abortion via RU 486, a person who lost her fertility from an illegal abortion in the 1960s, and a woman I met at a Take Back the Night Rally who had an abortion after she was raped. The stories reflect a small variety of situations that people may be in when they become accidentally pregnant. The first zine was called "Mine An Anthology Of Women's Choices." The purpose of these zines was to de-stigmatize …

T-Cell Responses To The M3 Immune Evasion Protein Of Murid Gammaherpesvirus 68 Are Partially Protective And Induced With Lytic Antigen Kinetics, Joshua J. Obar, Douglas C. Donovan, Sarah G. Crist, Ondine Silvia, James P. Stewart, Edward J. Usherwood Oct 2004

T-Cell Responses To The M3 Immune Evasion Protein Of Murid Gammaherpesvirus 68 Are Partially Protective And Induced With Lytic Antigen Kinetics, Joshua J. Obar, Douglas C. Donovan, Sarah G. Crist, Ondine Silvia, James P. Stewart, Edward J. Usherwood

Dartmouth Scholarship

DNA vaccination with the M3 gene, encoding an immune evasion molecule expressed during both the acute lytic and persistent phases of murid gammaherpesvirus 68 infection, yielded a significantly lower titer of virus in the lung than controls. The protection seen was dependent on T cells, and we mapped an epitope recognized by CD8 T cells. The immune response to this epitope follows the same kinetics as lytic cycle antigens, despite the fact that this gene is expressed in both lytic and persistent stages of infection. This has important implications for our understanding of T-cell responses to putative latency-associated gammaherpesvirus proteins …

A Vibrio Cholerae Classical Tcpa Amino Acid Sequence Induces Protective Antibody That Binds An Area Hypothesized To Be Important For Toxin-Coregulated Pilus Structure, Ronald K. Taylor, Thomas J. Kirn, Michael D. Meeks, Terri K. Wade, William F. Wade Oct 2004

A Vibrio Cholerae Classical Tcpa Amino Acid Sequence Induces Protective Antibody That Binds An Area Hypothesized To Be Important For Toxin-Coregulated Pilus Structure, Ronald K. Taylor, Thomas J. Kirn, Michael D. Meeks, Terri K. Wade, William F. Wade

Dartmouth Scholarship

Vibrio cholerae is a gram-negative bacterium that has been associated with cholera pandemics since the early 1800s. Whole-cell, killed, and live-attenuated oral cholera vaccines are in use. We and others have focused on the development of a subunit cholera vaccine that features standardized epitopes from various V. cholerae macromolecules that are known to induce protective antibody responses. TcpA protein is assembled into toxin-coregulated pilus (TCP), a type IVb pilus required for V. cholerae colonization, and thus is a strong candidate for a cholera subunit vaccine. Polypeptides (24 to 26 amino acids) in TcpA that can induce protective antibody responses have …

For The Rest Of Their Lives: Seniors And The Fair Housing Act, Robert G. Schwemm, Michael Allen

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

America's population is growing older. According to the 2000 census, more than 35 million people in the United States (12% of the total population) are over 65 years old. These figures are expected to grow dramatically in the early decades of the twenty-first century as the "Baby Boom" generation reaches retirement age and as improvements in health care make it possible for more people to live to an advanced age.

Providing housing for this segment of the American population is already a massive industry and one that will certainly grow as the number of, older persons increases. One of the …

Nietzsche, Nihilism, And The Virtue Of Nature, Steven Michels

Political Science & Global Affairs Faculty Publications

Nietzsche’s view of nature and his attack on the platonic tradition has given him a reputation as a nihilist, a label he himself acknowledged. Yet what does Nietzsche mean by nihilism? and to what extent is he a nihilist? This article explores Nietzsche’s use of the term as it relates to modernity, his own postmodern project, and how it is connected with what Nietzsche calls “virtue.”

A Correlational Study Of The Effect Of Per Pupil Expenditure On Standardized Third Grade Reading Scores In Missouri, John Arthur Dunahm Jr. Oct 2004

A Correlational Study Of The Effect Of Per Pupil Expenditure On Standardized Third Grade Reading Scores In Missouri, John Arthur Dunahm Jr.

Theses

Funding of education has long been a major topic of discussion in both the public and political arenas. How tax dollars are spent in the area of education is now at the forefront of this debate with the advent of mechanisms which are designed to hold schools accountable for their funding. The chief mechanism of accountability is standardized testing achievement by students.

In this study, per-pupil expenditures for schools districts in the state of Missouri, for the years 1998 and 2002, will be examined as a correlation to high student achievement on the Missouri Assessment Program third grade communication arts …

Portals To Knowledge: Confluence And Conflict Between Enlightenment And Postmodern Currencies, Benjamin G. Lanier-Nabors

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[Editors' Introduction]

In order to provide any viable critique of twenty-first-century discourses -- whether signified by late capitalism, epistemological hegemony, cultural domination, or globalization (the catch-word for all of these) -- one must not employ an ahistorical or static lens; alternatively, one must dredge up and analyze the sediments that underlie current discourses, and many of these sediments are found in the eighteenth century. More specifically, by reading the thoughts of such writers as Joseph Addison and Jonathan Swift, one is forced to read the links and antipathies between the discursive economies of epistemology -- philosophical, scientific, and economic -- …

A Privatization Of Politics: Anthony Elliot's Concepts Of The Self (2001), Paula Murphy Oct 2004

A Privatization Of Politics: Anthony Elliot's Concepts Of The Self (2001), Paula Murphy

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

It would be difficult to find a more appropriate image of selfhood in the modern world than that found in Ezra Pound's poem In a Station of the Metro. It is a selfhood which is at once unique and conglomerative, fleetingly visible then tantalizingly out of focus. It is this slippery, indefinable entity that is the subject of Anthony Elliot's book. The title bears witness to the enormous breadth of its subject matter: Concepts of the Self is an attempt to engage with the various contemporary theoretical frameworks through which selfhood is explicated. Elliot's approach is admirably inter-disciplinary, …

Sagittal Plane Biomechanics Cannot Injure The Acl During Sidestep Cutting, Scott G. Mclean, Xuemei Huang, Anne Su, Antonie J. Van Den Bogert

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Background. Knee joint sagittal plane forces are a proposed mechanism of anterior cruciate ligament injury during sport movements such as sidestep cutting. Ligament force magnitudes for these movements however, remain unknown. The need to examine injury-causing events suggests elucidation via model-based investigations is possible. Using this approach, the current study determined whether sagittal plane knee loading during sidestep cutting could in isolation injure the anterior cruciate ligament.

Methods. Experiments were performed on subject-specific forward dynamic musculoskeletal models, generated from data obtained from 10 male and 10 female athletes. Models were optimized to simulate subject-specific cutting movements. Random perturbations …
