Maternal Anaemia And Its Impact On Perinatal Outcome In A Tertiary Care Hospital In Pakistan, F W. Lone, R N. Qureshi, F Emmanuel Nov 2004

Maternal Anaemia And Its Impact On Perinatal Outcome In A Tertiary Care Hospital In Pakistan, F W. Lone, R N. Qureshi, F Emmanuel

Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology

Maternal anaemia is a common problem in pregnancy, particularly in developing countries. We investigated the relationship between maternal anaemia and perinatal outcome in a cohort of 629 pregnant women from October 2001 to 2002. Of these, 313 were anaemic (haemoglobin < 11 g/L). Perinatal outcomes included preterm delivery, low birth weight, intrauterine growth retardation, perinatal death, low Apgar scores and intrauterine fetal death. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed. The risk of preterm delivery and low birth weight among the anaemic women was 4 and 1.9 times more respectively than the non-anaemic women. The neonates of anaemic women also had 1.8 times increased risk having low Apgar scores at 1 minute and there was a 3.7 greater risk of intrauterine fetal death among the anaemic women than the non-anaemic women.

A Study Of Pediatric Heart Transplant Patients In Relationship To Post Transplant Coronary Artery Disease, Mark Randall Nov 2004

A Study Of Pediatric Heart Transplant Patients In Relationship To Post Transplant Coronary Artery Disease, Mark Randall

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Post transplant coronary artery disease influences short and long-term survival of pediatric heart transplant recipients. Associated cardiovascular disease risk factors among non-heart transplant adult and pediatric heart populations for development of coronary artery disease have been documented. Little is known about these typical cardiovascular disease risk factors as well as other possible risk factors in the development of post transplant coronary artery disease. Objective: The purpose of this research was to examine children/adolescents (n=194), 5-18 years old, at least one-year post heart transplant. This study also investigated if there were physiological and psychological/behavioral differences between recipients with (n = 28) …

A Study Of Local Organisations In Mine Action, Gichd

Global CWD Repository

This Study of Local Organisations in Mine Action, which was requested by the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS), is an assessment of the successes and failures of local mine action organisations, including their competence, effectiveness, efficiency and sustainability. It examines how, and to what extent, national governments have encouraged and supported such organisations, and whether they have given priority or preferential treatment to such rganisations in issuing contracts or funding. It examines how much external assistance has been needed to reach the necessary standards of competence, and whether the newly-formed organisations have been able to implement national standards derived …

A Cross-Cultural Test Of Nancy Jay’S Theory About Women, Sacrificial Blood And Religious Participation, Virginia S. Fink Nov 2004

A Cross-Cultural Test Of Nancy Jay’S Theory About Women, Sacrificial Blood And Religious Participation, Virginia S. Fink

Journal of International Women's Studies

I examine the theoretical insights of Nancy Jay’s 1992 investigation of patrilineal sacrificial rituals and their role in the restriction of women in religious rituals. I use the Standard Cross-Cultural Sample, a representative sample of preindustrial societies, to test the strength of patrilineality and other factors identified as subordinating women in preindustrial societies. A societal pattern of male inheritance of property and patrilineal descent are the strongest predictors of women being restricted or excluded from major public religious rituals. The implications of this pattern for modern societies are discussed.

Has Affirmative Action Reached South African Women?, V. Naidoo, M. Kongolo Nov 2004

Has Affirmative Action Reached South African Women?, V. Naidoo, M. Kongolo

Journal of International Women's Studies

South Africa has unfortunately inherited a work environment based on an economic system characterised by deprivation, political instability, adversarial labour relations, cheap migrant labour, and massive income and wealth disparities. The world of work is also characterised by an appalling systematic discrimination against Blacks, women, and people with disabilities. Affirmative action has been the only policy instrument used by the Democratic South Africa to redress the past imbalances. In line with the Employment Equity Act No. 55 of 1998, the beneficiaries of this action are mainly African women (Blacks, Coloured, and Indians including disabled people). This has been justified by …

Sensory Hypoinnervation In Club Foot, M Ahmed, N Ahmed, K. M. Khan, Masood Umer, H. Rashid,, Pervaiz Hashmi

Department of Surgery Docs

Abstract

We have compared the density of nerve fibres in the synovium in club foot with that of specimens obtained from the synovium of the hip at operations for developmental dysplasia. The study focused on the sensory neuropeptides substance P; calcitonin gene-related peptide; protein gene product 9.5, a general marker for mature peripheral nerve fibres; and growth associated protein 43, a neuronal marker for new or regenerating nerve fibres. In order to establish whether there might be any inherent difference we analysed the density of calcitonin gene-related peptide-positive nerve fibres in the hip and ankle joints in young rats. Semi-quantitative …

Soil Microfungi In The Forest-Agricultural Landscape Of San Luis, Costa Rica, November 2004, Ellyn Yakowenko Nov 2004

Soil Microfungi In The Forest-Agricultural Landscape Of San Luis, Costa Rica, November 2004, Ellyn Yakowenko

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Soil microfungi are known to play key roles in ecosystem function and are often the first indicators of a breakdown in stability (Volk 2001). This study compares soil microfungal abundance and diversity across a tropical human land use gradient in the San Luis valley of Costa Rica. Microfungi were cultured from soil samples collected from primary forest, secondary forest, pasture, and coffee farm sites using the Soil Dilution Plate Technique (Christensen 2001). Thirty-six soil samples yielded a total of 17,321 isolates of 41 different morphological species. Each habitat type was characterized by the dominance of a few abundant species while …

Effects Of Coffee Agroecosystems On Moth Diversity In San Luis, Costa Rica, November 2004, Nathaniel Talbot Nov 2004

Effects Of Coffee Agroecosystems On Moth Diversity In San Luis, Costa Rica, November 2004, Nathaniel Talbot

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

The majority of Costa Rica’s primary forests have been fragmented and converted to agricultural landscape. Fragmentation studies based on Island Biogeography Theory and Hubble Unified Theory typically view the degraded area surrounding forests as uninhabitable, however, most agroecosystems actually serve as viable habitat to a subset of natural communities as well as a number of colonizing species. As a follow up to Rickets et al (2000) who studied moths in a tropical, agricultural landscape, this study focuses on how moth diversity is affected by coffee plantations in San Luis, Costa Rica. Moths were collected from three sites: a forest, a …

The Federalist Dimension Of Regulatory Takings Jurisprudence, Stewart E. Sterk Nov 2004

The Federalist Dimension Of Regulatory Takings Jurisprudence, Stewart E. Sterk

Articles

Conventional wisdom teaches that the Supreme Court's takings doctrine is a muddle. Appearances, however, are deceiving. The "property" protected by the Takings Clause is defined not by a single sovereign, but by the legislative enactments and judicial pronouncements of fifty separate states. As a result, federalism concerns - underappreciated in the takings literature - do and should play an important role in shaping the Court's takings doctrine. In particular, these concerns make it inappropriate for the Court to use the Takings Clause as a vehicle for articulating a comprehensive theory of the limits on government power to regulate land. This …

Multiple Roles Of Mucins In Pancreatic Cancer, A Lethal And Challenging Malignancy., N. Moniaux, M. Andrianifahanana, R. E. Brand, Surinder K. Batra Nov 2004

Multiple Roles Of Mucins In Pancreatic Cancer, A Lethal And Challenging Malignancy., N. Moniaux, M. Andrianifahanana, R. E. Brand, Surinder K. Batra

Journal Articles: Biochemistry & Molecular Biology

Mucins are members of an expanding family of large multifunctional glycoproteins. Pancreatic mucins have important biological functions, including the protection, lubrication, and moisturisation of the surfaces of epithelial tissues lining ductal structures within the pancreas. Several lines of evidence support the notion that deregulated mucin production is a hallmark of inflammatory and neoplastic disorders of the pancreas. Herein, we discuss the factors that contribute to the lethality of pancreatic cancer as well as the key role played by mucins, particularly MUC1 and MUC4, in the development and progression of the disease. Aspects pertaining to the aberrant expression and glycosylation of …

The patient in which intra-operative wake-up test was not planned were excluded from this case series. Results: We managed a series of sixteen cases of scoliosis in our hospital. Eleven patients were female and five were male with the age ranging from six to twenty two years. SSEPs were monitored throughout the procedure and …

Communicating Hands: Erps Elicited By Meaningful Symbolic Hand Postures, Tc Gunter, P Bach Nov 2004

Communicating Hands: Erps Elicited By Meaningful Symbolic Hand Postures, Tc Gunter, P Bach

School of Psychology

Meaningful and meaningless hand postures were presented to subjects who had to carry out a semantic discrimination task while electrical brain responses were recorded. Both meaningful and control sets of hand postures were matched as closely as possible. The ERPs elicited by meaningless hand postures showed an anteriorly distributed N300 and a centro-posteriorly distributed N400 component. The N300 probably reflects picture-specific processes, whereas the N400-effect probably reflects processing in an amodal semantic network. The scalp-distribution of the N400-effect, which is more posterior than usually reported in picture processing, suggests that the semantic representations of the concepts expressed by meaningful hand …
