Swimming In The Deep End: Dealing With Justice In Mediation, Jonathan M. Hyman Jan 2004

Swimming In The Deep End: Dealing With Justice In Mediation, Jonathan M. Hyman

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

Justice is a troublesome issue for mediators. It is not their role to decide who was right and who was wrong. Mediators have no authority to determine if a resolution is fair or just. That role and that authority are reserved for judges, juries, and arbitrators. But if mediators should not decide what is fair and just, why should they even think about those matters? Even learning only what the parties deem fair or unfair about past actions, or what is just or unjust about pending settlement proposals, without trying to impose any "correct" outcome, would leave the mediator with …

Concentrating, Purifying And Detecting Waterborne Parasites, Dante S. Zarlenga, James M. Trout Jan 2004

Concentrating, Purifying And Detecting Waterborne Parasites, Dante S. Zarlenga, James M. Trout

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

There has been recent emphasis on developing better methods for detecting diseases of zoonotic and veterinary importance. This has been prompted by an increase in human disease agents detectable in environmental samples, the potential for bioterrorism, and the lowering of international trade barriers and expansion of personal travel, which are bringing previously considered exotic diseases to new geographical localities. To appreciate the complexities of developing detection methods and working with environmental samples, it is appropriate to review technologies currently in use, as well as those in development and presently limited to research laboratories. Discussion of parasite detection would not be …

Linking Microbial-Scale Findings To Farm-Scale Outcomes In A Dryland Cropping System, Cinthia K. Johnson, Brian J. Wienhold, John W. Doran, Rhae A. Drijber, Sara F. Wright Jan 2004

Linking Microbial-Scale Findings To Farm-Scale Outcomes In A Dryland Cropping System, Cinthia K. Johnson, Brian J. Wienhold, John W. Doran, Rhae A. Drijber, Sara F. Wright

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Soil biological response to management is best evaluated in field-scale experiments within the context of the soil environment and crop; however, cost-effective methods are lacking to relate these data which span multiple spatial scales. We hypothesized that zones of apparent electrical conductivity (ECa) could be used to integrate soil properties (sampling-site scale), microbial-scale measures of vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) fungi, and field-scale wheat yields from yield maps. An on-farm dryland experiment (~250 ha) was established wherein two (~32-ha) fields were assigned to each phase of a winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) – corn (Zea mays L.) – …

Tillage And Cropping Effects On Soil Quality Indicators In The Northern Great Plains, Mark A. Liebig, D. L. Tanaka, Brian J. Wienhold Jan 2004

Tillage And Cropping Effects On Soil Quality Indicators In The Northern Great Plains, Mark A. Liebig, D. L. Tanaka, Brian J. Wienhold

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The extreme climate of the northern Great Plains of North America requires cropping systems to possess a resilient soil resource in order to be sustainable. This paper summarizes the interactive effects of tillage, crop sequence, and cropping intensity on soil quality indicators for two long-term cropping system experiments in the northern Great Plains. The experiments, located in central North Dakota, were established in 1984 and 1993 on a Wilton silt loam (FAO: Calcic Siltic Chernozem; USDA1: fine-silty, mixed, superactive frigid Pachic Haplustoll). Soil physical, chemical, and biological properties considered as indicators of soil quality were evaluated in spring 2001 in …

Juvenile fish from each genetic group were stocked at 12,000 fish/ha into three, 0.04-ha ponds per genetic group. Fish were fed once daily to satiation from June through October, and fed on days when afternoon water temperatures were above 17 °C from November through December. Fish were harvested, weighed, and counted in January, and 150 fish per genetic group (50 fish …

Ordering (And Order In) The City, Nicole Stelle Garnett Jan 2004

Ordering (And Order In) The City, Nicole Stelle Garnett

Journal Articles

Over the past two decades, the broken windows hypothesis by George Kelling and James Q. Wilson has revolutionized thinking about urban policy. This now-familiar theory is that uncorrected manifestations of disorder, even minor ones like broken windows, signal a breakdown in the social order that accelerates neighborhood decline. The response to this theory has been a proliferation of policies focusing on public order. Largely missing from the academic debate about these developments is a discussion of the complex and important role of property regulation in order-maintenance efforts. This Article attempts to fill that property law gap in the public-order puzzle …

Dartmouth Scholarship

The stem–loop binding protein (SLBP) binds the 3′ end of histone mRNA and is present both in nucleus, and in the cytoplasm on the polyribosomes. SLBP participates in the processing of the histone pre-mRNA and in translation of the mature message. Histone mRNAs are rapidly degraded when cells are treated with inhibitors of DNA replication and are stabilized by inhibitors of translation, resulting in an increase in histone mRNA levels. Here, we show that SLBP is a component of the histone messenger ribonucleoprotein particle (mRNP). Histone mRNA from polyribosomes is immunoprecipitated with anti-SLBP. Most of the SLBP in cycloheximide-treated cells …

Quality Control Procedures For Weigh-In-Motion Data, Andrew P. Nichols, Darcy M. Bullock Jan 2004

Quality Control Procedures For Weigh-In-Motion Data, Andrew P. Nichols, Darcy M. Bullock

JTRP Technical Reports

For the past two decades, weigh-in-motion (WIM) sensors have been used in the United States to collect vehicle weight data for designing pavements and monitoring their performance. The use of these sensors is now being expanded for enforcement purposes to provide virtual weigh stations for screening vehicles in traffic streams for overweight violations. A study found that static weigh stations in Indiana were effective for identifying safety violations, but ineffective for identifying overweight vehicles. It was also determined that the alternative approach to identifying overweight vehicles using virtual weigh stations requires a high level of WIM data accuracy and reliability …

Aeromedical Issues In Diabetic Aviators, Robert T. Keegan Iii, Bascom K. Bradshaw Jan 2004

Aeromedical Issues In Diabetic Aviators, Robert T. Keegan Iii, Bascom K. Bradshaw

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

Diabetes mellitus is a common disease that poses a serious health and safety threat to civilian aviators. Complications secondary to diabetes can be severe and result in sudden incapacitation. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has developed regulations for certifying aviators with diabetes, as well as guidelines for in-flight management of blood glucose levels. Advances in medical technology have led to treatments and countermeasures for diabetes that enable many individuals to engage in physically and mentally demanding activities. This paper presents a basic overview of the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management of diabetes mellitus in civil aviators. In addition, current FAA regulations …

Histamine As An Aid To Biopsy Of Third Eyelid Lymphoid Tissue In Sheep, S. Bender, J. Alverson, L. M. Herrmann, Katherine I. O'Rourke

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications

TRANSMISSIBLE spongiform encephalopathies, of which ovine scrapie is a prototype, are neurodegenerative disorders characterised by the accumulation of an abnormal isoform (PrP-scrapie or PrPSc) of a normal cellular protein (PrPC) (Prusiner 1982). Characteristics of the disease include long incubation periods, and a progressive and chronic clinical course resulting in death (Fraser 1976). PrPsc is detectable during the preclinical stages of scrapie in peripheral lymph nodes (Ikegami and others 1991, Muramatsu and others 1993), in lymphoid follicles of the tonsils (Schreuder and others 1996) and in lymphoid follicles of the nictitating membrane or third eyelid (O'Rourke …

Role Of The Bank For International Settlements In Shaping The World Financial System, The , Carl Felsenfeld, Genci Bilali Jan 2004

Role Of The Bank For International Settlements In Shaping The World Financial System, The , Carl Felsenfeld, Genci Bilali

Faculty Scholarship

The Bank for International Settlements ("BIS") was set up in Basel, Switzerland in 1923 to handle remaining financial issues from World War II largely having to do with German reparation payments. It was the first of the semi-public international banks. Over the years its functions have changed and, largely since the late 1970's, it has served as the situs for the world's central banks and financial regulators to pool ideas and deal with international financial issues. A group of committees, com- posed largely of representatives of central bankers, now meets at BIS and has been issuing memoranda and drafts of …

Challenge Of Environmental Justice, The, Sheila R. Foster

The residents of Camden, New Jersey do not live in a bustling city as do residents living across the Delaware River in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Instead, Camden's largely minority population lives in an environmentally and economically devastated neighborhood replete with two Superfund sites. Garbage incinerators, sewage treatment plants and polluting factories have been placed in Camden because the poor have historically been less likely to protest than wealthier communities. In 1997, concerned Camden residents formed the South Camden Citizens in Action ( SCCA ) association to confront the continued encroachment by polluting factories and sewage treatment centers threatening their lives and …

Building Active Communities: Linking Lents, Carolyn Bonner, Dan Bower, Heather Marren, Michael Rose, Beth Shuck, Rania Wasfy

Master of Urban and Regional Planning Workshop Projects

The purpose of the Linking Lents Project is to increase opportunities for physical activity in the Lents neighborhood. Both programming changes and physical changes to the built environment are needed to accomplish this goal. While a trailhead in the Lents neighborhood will attract some new users to the trail, a trailhead alone may not greatly increase trail use. A Lents trailhead constructed in conjunction with improved overall access to the trail, connections to neighborhood amenities and public education of the benefits of increased physical activity will increase Lents residents’ use of the trail. This project was conducted under the supervision …
