Using Sem To Develop A Model For Educators Of Children Who Are Exposed To The Trauma Of Violence, Rosalind Duplechain Jan 2004

Using Sem To Develop A Model For Educators Of Children Who Are Exposed To The Trauma Of Violence, Rosalind Duplechain

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

This study used Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to develop a teacher-friendly model for understanding the relationship between children’s exposure to traumatic events, such as violence exposure, and their school achievement. With a sample of 146 urban elementary (grades 2-5) children, three variables (mental health behaviors, performance-related behaviors, and standardized achievement) were examined. The model suggested that children who are exposed to violence in Year I were more delinquent and ultimately underachieved in reading in Year II. This model should help teachers identify students exposed to violence and address their social and academic needs.

Applying U.S. Employment Discrimination Laws To International Employers, Richard A. Posthuma, Mark V. Roehling, Michael A. Campion Jan 2004

Applying U.S. Employment Discrimination Laws To International Employers, Richard A. Posthuma, Mark V. Roehling, Michael A. Campion

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

The question of whether U.S. employment discrimination laws apply to international employers is complex and involves multiple sources of legal authority including U.S. statutes, international treaties, and the laws of non-American host countries. This article provides detailed, simplifying guidance to assist employers in working through that complexity. Based on an examination of 98 federal courts cases, this article identifies and explains eight general guidelines for determining when U.S. laws apply to international employers (e.g., U.S. employees working abroad or “foreign” employees working in the U.S.). These guidelines are incorporated into an organizing framework or “decision tree” that leads employers through …

Time-Dependent Speckle In Holographic Optical Coherence Imaging And The Health Of Tumor Tissue, P. Yu, L. Peng, M. Mustata, J. J. Turek, M. R. Melloch, D. D. Nolte Jan 2004

Time-Dependent Speckle In Holographic Optical Coherence Imaging And The Health Of Tumor Tissue, P. Yu, L. Peng, M. Mustata, J. J. Turek, M. R. Melloch, D. D. Nolte

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Holographic optical coherence imaging acquires en face images from successive depths inside scattering tissue. In a study of multicellular tumor spheroids the holographic features recorded from a fixed depth are observed to be time dependent, and they may be classified as variable or persistent. The ratio of variable to persistent features, as well as speckle correlation times, provides quantitative measures of the health of the tissue. Studies of rat osteogenic sarcoma tumor spheroids that have been subjected to metabolic and cross-polymerizing poisons provide quantitative differentiation among healthy, necrotic, and poisoned tissue. Organelle motility in healthy tissue appears as super-Brownian laser …

Spread Of Butternut Canker In North America, Host Range, Evidence Of Resistance Within Butternut Populations And Conservation Genetics, Michael E. Ostry, Keith E. Woeste Jan 2004

Spread Of Butternut Canker In North America, Host Range, Evidence Of Resistance Within Butternut Populations And Conservation Genetics, Michael E. Ostry, Keith E. Woeste

Department of Forestry & Natural Resources Faculty Publications

Butternut canker is killing trees throughout the range of butternut in North America and is threatening the viability of many populations in several areas. Although butternut is the primary host, other Juglans species and some hardwood species also are potential hosts. Evidence is building that genetic resistance within butternut populations may be exploited for conservation and restoration of the species.

2004 Rosabeth Moss Kanter Award For Excellence In Work-Family Research Publication, Shelley M. Macdermid

Center for Families Publications

Over the past few decades there has been an explosion of research on the relationships between work and non-work life. Researchers studying these issues come from many disciplines and professions, resulting in fragmented awareness of one another's work. In addition, exchanges of research information among scholars, consultants and corporate practitioners are limited. Many research studies are not well-grounded in theory, slowing the generation of new knowledge. As a result, it has been difficult to develop shared standards for research quality and to avoid redundance in the research literature. Some excellent studies have failed to have impact because of lack of …

Cd40-Associated Traf 6 Signaling Is Required For Disease Induction In A Retrovirus-Induced Murine Immunodeficiency, Kathy A. Green, Cory L. Ahonen, W. James Cook, William R. Green

Dartmouth Scholarship

LP-BM5 retrovirus-infected C57BL/6 mice develop splenomegaly, lymphadenopathy, hypergammaglobulinemia, and immunodeficiency; thus, this disease has been named mouse AIDS. In this syndrome, CD154/CD40 interactions are required for but do not mediate disease by upregulation of CD80 or CD86. We report here that there is nonetheless a necessity for CD40 signaling competence, specifically an intact tumor necrosis factor receptor-associated factor 6 (TRAF 6) binding site.

Inactivation Of A Bacterial Virulence Pheromone By Phagocyte-Derived Oxidants: New Role For The Nadph Oxidase In Host Defense, Jacob M. Rothfork, Graham S. Timmins, Michael N. Harris, Xian Chen, Aldons J. Lusis, Michael Otto, Ambrose L. Cheung, Hattie D. Gresham Jan 2004

Inactivation Of A Bacterial Virulence Pheromone By Phagocyte-Derived Oxidants: New Role For The Nadph Oxidase In Host Defense, Jacob M. Rothfork, Graham S. Timmins, Michael N. Harris, Xian Chen, Aldons J. Lusis, Michael Otto, Ambrose L. Cheung, Hattie D. Gresham

Dartmouth Scholarship

Quorum sensing triggers virulence factor expression in medically important bacterial pathogens in response to a density-dependent increase in one or more autoinducing pheromones. Here, we show that phagocyte-derived oxidants target these autoinducers for inactivation as an innate defense mechanism of the host. In a skin infection model, expression of phagocyte NADPH oxidase, myeloperoxidase, or inducible nitric oxide synthase was critical for defense against a quorum-sensing pathogen, Staphylococcus aureus, but not for defense against a quorum sensing-deficient mutant. A virulence-inducing peptide of S. aureus was inactivated in vitro and in vivo by reactive oxygen and nitrogen intermediates, including HOCl and ONOO(-). …

Possible Use Of P20 Antigen In Serodiagnosis Of Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Shinchieh Yang Jan 2004

Possible Use Of P20 Antigen In Serodiagnosis Of Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Shinchieh Yang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Crohn's disease (CD) is an idiopathic, chronic, relapsing inflammatory disorder, which is most commonly involved terminal ileum and colon. The incidence and prevalence of CD has dramatically increased during the last 50 years; however, the etiology and mechanism of this disorder remain unveiled. Besides genetic susceptibility, recent integrated researches investigated the role of environmental triggers such as microflora, measles viruses and mycobacteria in the pathogenesis of CD. The association between M. avium subsp paratuberculosis (MAP) and CD has been heightened because of clinical resemblance to Johne's disease (JD), a granulomatous enteritis in ruminants caused by MAP. Isolation of MAP from …

Land Use Effects On Lake Water Quality In Central Florida, Jonathan Seiler Jan 2004

Land Use Effects On Lake Water Quality In Central Florida, Jonathan Seiler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Land use affects the water quality of lakes. Different land use types yield different effects due to varying amounts and constituents of runoff. In this study, the effects of surrounding land use on the water quality of 50 lakes in Seminole County, Florida was assessed. Using GIS, I placed buffers of 100 and 500 m around each lake. The percentages of land use type were calculated within these buffers for 1990 and 1995. An ordination of lakes was done using Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) to determine if the surrounding land use patterns were adequate to describe the trophic status of …

Ninebanded Armadillo (Dasypus Novemcinctus), Michael T. Mengak Jan 2004

Ninebanded Armadillo (Dasypus Novemcinctus), Michael T. Mengak

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Scientists classify armadillos with anteaters and sloths. This tells us that they have poorly developed teeth and limited mobility. In fact, armadillos have small, peg-like teeth that are useful for grinding their food but of little value for capturing prey. No other mammal in Georgia has bony skin plates or a “shell”, which makes the armadillo easy to identify. Just like a turtle, the shell is called a carapace. Armadillos are common in central and southern Georgia and are moving northward. Only one species of armadillo lives in Georgia and the southeastern U.S. However, 20 recognized species are found throughout …

Monetary Valuation Of Rare Species And Imperiled Habitats As A Basis For Economically Evaluating Conservation Approaches , Richard M. Engeman, Stephanie A. Shwiff, Henry T. Smith, Bernice Constantin Jan 2004

Monetary Valuation Of Rare Species And Imperiled Habitats As A Basis For Economically Evaluating Conservation Approaches , Richard M. Engeman, Stephanie A. Shwiff, Henry T. Smith, Bernice Constantin

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Management actions directed towards the conservation of species or habitats are usually measured in resource improvement. Nevertheless, the decision to select and carry out such actions are rooted in the available funding. Therefore, to truly evaluate the benefit/costs of a conservation-directed management action, the resource improvement should be in the same metric as the expenditures. To this end, we describe here a variety of methods for attaching monetary values to rare species and habitats. We also give examples of applications with which we have been involved to demonstrate how such species and habitat valuations have allowed economic analyses of conservation …

Book Review: Nitrate And Man: Toxic, Harmless Or Beneficial? By J. L'Hirondel And J.-L. L'Hirondel, J. L. Hatfield

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The concluding paragraph of the book notes that “The history of nitrate is that of a world-scale scientific error that has lasted for more than 50 years. The time has now come to rectify this regrettable and costly misunderstanding.” The senior author of this book was a pediatrician who devoted a portion of his life to the study of methaemoglobinaemia in infants and the relationship to nitrate concentrations in water supplies. This book is not a biased casual overview of the nitrate problems and the levels in drinking water but an extremely thorough and thought-provoking analysis of our current understanding …

New York Moveable Feast: Boundaries To Practice, Christopher Honeyman, Lela Love Jan 2004

New York Moveable Feast: Boundaries To Practice, Christopher Honeyman, Lela Love

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

Following the first flush of enthusiasm, it is becoming apparent that the dispute resolution field, like its predecessor professional fields, is vulnerable to the incentive structures and practice barriers built into both academic and practice careers. Also, what many of us think of as a national (or international) movement may be increasingly affected by local cultures. In collaboration with scholars and practitioners in a variety of cities, the Broad Field Project6 ("Broad Field") has been convening a number of dialogues about related issues, including a small series particularly focused on the local cultures of dispute resolution.

Something's Rotten In The State Of Party-Appointed Arbitration: Healing Adr's Black Eye That Is "Nonneutral Neutrals", Seth H. Lieberman

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

This Note will first explore the history of arbitration, particularly within the United States. It will predominantly examine the traditional definitions of arbitrators and any consistencies throughout the various differences of arbitrator definitions. Second, this Note will investigate the traditional definitions of and roles played by advocates in traditional litigation and alternative dispute resolution. It will contrast advocates with party-appointed arbitrators, particularly focusing on their history, reasons for their creation, and their intended purpose.

Third, this Note will investigate the characteristics of modern party-appointed arbitrators, focusing on what scholars and parties regard as their expected behavior in a tripartite arbitration. …
