Students Who Self-Injure : How Can Counselors Help, Martha Watter Jan 2004

Students Who Self-Injure : How Can Counselors Help, Martha Watter

Graduate Research Papers

It is estimated that approximately two million Americans self-injure (Nadelson, 2000). Generally, females are most likely to self-injure and usually begin in their teens. Approximately 72 percent of those who self-injure use deliberate cutting (Ng, 1998). Although possibly new to many common civilians, self-injury has been called the addiction of the 90's according to many researchers (Nadelson, 2000). This paper describes what self-injury is, when it usually begins, and the many reasons why an adolescent chooses to self injure himself or herself. Each teen should be treated as an individual, although, most often, self-injurers come from similar family situations and/or …

Considerations In Counseling International Students, Michael L. Williams Jan 2004

Considerations In Counseling International Students, Michael L. Williams

Graduate Research Papers

Much has been written about the culture shock that international students experience while studying at a United States college or university. Sometimes adjustments to new living conditions, language, food and culture have exacerbated latent emotional issues in some international students or contributed to the development of emotional disturbances in others. While living in their home countries, many students from other cultures rely on sources such as older family members or spiritual, religious, or medical experts to discuss emotional conflicts. This population often views counseling as performing two primary services: one, to meet education or career goals; or, two, to deal …

Compellence: An Empirical Perspective, Michael G. Dziubinski Jan 2004

Compellence: An Empirical Perspective, Michael G. Dziubinski

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

Compellence, the use of a contingent threat of force to get a target state to modify a behavior, is an understudied area of international relations. An empirical examination of this area reveals patterns of the frequency of attempted compellence and successful compellence that are not explained by current research or broader international relations theories. In the post-World War II period (1946–2001), the pattern is a rapid drop and continued suppression of success, but a continuation of compellence attempts at the historic level. Existing compellence research and international relations theory do not explain this puzzling disparity of low success and continued …

Cooperative Learning In The Middle School : Is It A Developmentally Appropriate Strategy?, Laura C. Guilford Jan 2004

Cooperative Learning In The Middle School : Is It A Developmentally Appropriate Strategy?, Laura C. Guilford

Graduate Research Papers

"Cooperative learning is the instructional use of small groups so that students work together to maximize their own and each other's learning" (Holt, 1993, p. 5). The strategy sounds simple, and it has existed throughout history in some format, but there are many aspects.that come into play when cooperative learning is used. This review of literature examines what cooperative learning is, what the benefits of using cooperative learning strategies are, what problems can occur, and whether cooperative learning is an appropriate strategy for middle level students.· The author discusses recommendations for resolving some of the problems that teachers have with …

Retrospective Miscue Analysis : A Positive Approach, Lisa Marlene Wright

Graduate Research Papers

Retrospective Miscue Analysis (RMA) is an assessment and instructional tool that can be used in strengthening reading strategies, comprehension development, and positive reader self-concept. This paper discusses RMA's theoretical background and ways it empowers teachers and students, raises reader self-esteem, and teaches reading strategies such as self-correcting, re-reading and listening for syntactical and semantic cues. Next, I discuss the RMA process, which includes recording the reading session, producing a type script with all of the participants' miscues, as well as a separate script that has only the miscues to be discussed with the reader, marking the miscue analysis sheet, recording …

Learning From The Mistakes Of The Past: Disclosure Of Financial Conflicts Of Interest And Genetic Research, Christopher Jackson Jan 2004

Learning From The Mistakes Of The Past: Disclosure Of Financial Conflicts Of Interest And Genetic Research, Christopher Jackson

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

“Every human being of adult years and sound mind has a right to determine what shall be done with his own body . . . .” From Benjamin Cardozo’s early expression of the principle of patient autonomy emerged the doctrine of informed consent, defined by both contract and fiduciary laws and elaborated upon by courts, state and federal legislatures, and professional associations. Later, as the world sought to reassemble itself following the horrors of World War II, the promulgation of the Nuremberg Code established an international standard for the treatment of human research subjects. The experiences of the Nazi atrocities, …

Polymer-Supported Reagents For Disinfection Of Water, Sylvester Ojo Ifalade Jan 2004

Polymer-Supported Reagents For Disinfection Of Water, Sylvester Ojo Ifalade

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

A macroporous poly(styrene-co-divinylbenzene) resin having redox N,N-dichlorosulfonamide group, was modified for use in small-scale chlorination of potable water. The resin was synthesized via sulfonyl chloride by modification of the strong acid cation exchange resin, Amberlyst-15. The products obtained after treatment contained -SO2NH2 and -SO 3H groups. The sulfonic acid groups were determined by a total ion exchange capacity measurement. The sulfonamide groups were chlorinated mainly to the dichlorosulfonamide groups by laundry bleach acidified with acetic acid. The concentration of sulfonamide groups was determined by its chlorine holding capacity. The resin was further characterized by photoacoustic infrared spectroscopy. Tap water, sparged …

Should Human Resources Managers Utilize Affirmative Action To Give Diversity Programs Legitimacy?, Janet Lynn Morrison Jan 2004

Should Human Resources Managers Utilize Affirmative Action To Give Diversity Programs Legitimacy?, Janet Lynn Morrison

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Since 1987, the valuing and managing of diversity has been on the radar screens of most human resources managers. Specifically, many are wrestling with how to establish the "perfect" diversity program that serves to get the message out to their organizational members that individual differences should be viewed as resources for learning and understanding and not barriers to career success or opportunity. However, for the majority, this has proved a difficult task. Simply, human resources managers are missing the mark when it comes to identifying a solid foundation for diversity management---a foundation that will compel organizational stakeholders to recognize diversity …

Identification Of Risk Factors For Crashes Involving Older Drivers, Nagasujana M Pulugurtha

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The focus of thesis is to evaluate the role of geometric features and traffic operations related characteristics on the involvement of the older drivers in motor vehicle crashes. Examples of potential factors influencing older driver crashes include intersection/roadway geometrics, type of traffic control, traffic signal phasing, light conditions. A methodology is developed to model older driver involvement in crashes. Data from Clark County, Nevada, are used to demonstrate the application of the methodology. The region has seen more than a 85 percent increase in elderly population during the last decade. Crash data from 1998 to 2002 are used. Other data …

Children With Disabilities In The Juvenile Justice System, Renetta M Stevens Jan 2004

Children With Disabilities In The Juvenile Justice System, Renetta M Stevens

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Children and youth with disabilities are over represented in the juvenile justice system. Studies show that a lack of compliance, monitoring and enforcement of the mandates of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) exists. The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship, if any, of the over representation of children and youth in the juvenile justice system and a deficiency in providing special education supports and services as mandated by the IDEA. The files of children and youth presently involved in the juvenile justice system were reviewed for this study and the available educational records, of those …

Using Sem To Develop A Model For Educators Of Children Who Are Exposed To The Trauma Of Violence, Rosalind Duplechain Jan 2004

Using Sem To Develop A Model For Educators Of Children Who Are Exposed To The Trauma Of Violence, Rosalind Duplechain

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

This study used Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to develop a teacher-friendly model for understanding the relationship between children’s exposure to traumatic events, such as violence exposure, and their school achievement. With a sample of 146 urban elementary (grades 2-5) children, three variables (mental health behaviors, performance-related behaviors, and standardized achievement) were examined. The model suggested that children who are exposed to violence in Year I were more delinquent and ultimately underachieved in reading in Year II. This model should help teachers identify students exposed to violence and address their social and academic needs.
