The Effectiveness Of Post-Fire Weed Management And The Germination Ecology Of Selected Invasive Weed Species Of Bold Park, Brett Neasham Jan 2004

The Effectiveness Of Post-Fire Weed Management And The Germination Ecology Of Selected Invasive Weed Species Of Bold Park, Brett Neasham

Theses : Honours

Bold Park is a 437 hectare A class reserve with high conservation value. Bold park is located on the Swan Coastal Plain, approximately 11 km west of the Perth CBD. Bold park is one of the few remaining coastal bushland reserves on the Swan Coastal Plain. High levels of floristic and faunal diversity contribute to Bold Park's conservation value. Weed invasion in Bold Park is reducing floristic diversity and is modifying ecosystem processes. Principle in the modified ecosystem processes is fire. While fire is a natural disturbance event in the bushland of the south-west of Western Australia, altered fire regimes …

Analysis Of Expression Patterns Of Scl And Pax7 In The Mouse Brain For Potential Concomitant Function Within The Mesencephalon, Julie Stampalia Jan 2004

Analysis Of Expression Patterns Of Scl And Pax7 In The Mouse Brain For Potential Concomitant Function Within The Mesencephalon, Julie Stampalia

Theses : Honours

Investigation of the cascade of events that leads to brain formation during embryogenesis allows an understanding of the processes involved that may well be applicable to future neurodegenerative therapies. Two genes at work during embryonic neurogenesis in a brain region called the superior colliculus are Scl, a member of the basic helix-loop-helix factor transcription factor family and Pax7, a paired box transcription factor containing a homeobox dornain. The superior coiliculus forms part of the visual system in mammals and in sepmate studies both the Scl and Pax7 genes have been shown to be present in this region of the mouse …

Improving Nutrient Management At Lake Joondalup, Western Australia, Through Identification Of Key Sources And Current Trajectories, Michelle Cumbers

Theses : Honours

Eutrophication has become a considerable issue for managers of water bodies across Australia. Rapid urbanisation in the south-west of Western Australia is causing the eutrophication of many wetlands within the region. Lake Joondalup is a eutrophic, urban lake, located approximately 20km north of Perth city. It comprises part of the Yellagonga Regional Park, having a high conservation value. The aim of this study was to provide managers of Lake Joondalup with information on the relative importance of different nutrient sources into the lake, thus enabling the development of appropriate management strategies. Additionally, a historical examination of available water quality data …

An Electromyographic Comparison Of Neck Conditioning Exercises, Jemma L. Coleman Jan 2004

An Electromyographic Comparison Of Neck Conditioning Exercises, Jemma L. Coleman

Theses : Honours

It is known that sustained muscular contractions can cause muscular pain, which explains the prevalence of neck pain of employees in static and semi-static work such as dentistry, sewing machine and computer operation. Additionally, exposure to high and sustained gravitational forces in high performance combat pilots is another source of neck pain in the workplace. Individuals with neck pain have been found to show decreased neck strength, in particular neck flexor strength has been found to be less than that of the general population. It has been suggested that neck-conditioning exercises may be useful in the prevention and rehabilitation of …

With the introduction of more powerful mobile microprocessors and colour screen technology, complex image manipulations on various mobile devices such as mobile phones and handheld devices have become a reality. As a consequence of these improvements, there has been an increasing demand by users for interactive computer games which produce complex graphics by utilizing these advanced hardware technologies. Three dimensional (3D) graphics have been used to produce realistic interactive imaging for computer games during recent years. Java, through its mobile device programming platform, provides the framework for such complex image manipulations in computer games deployed on Java compatible mobile devices. …

Child Custody Disputes: Bridging The Gap Between Psychologists And Family Court, Kate Pratsides Jan 2004

Child Custody Disputes: Bridging The Gap Between Psychologists And Family Court, Kate Pratsides

Theses : Honours

The number of divorce cases that come before judges and registrars within the Family Court system is steadily increasing, and so is the use of psychologists as expert witnesses. However, little is known about what the judges and registrars think of the psychologist's use of psychometric test results when writing their forensic report, this study attempts to answer that. This thesis is presented in two sections. The first is a literature review of guidelines that are available to psychologists when writing a forensic report. These guidelines include (1) broad guidelines provided by professional associations, such as the American Psychological Association; …

Effects Of Temporary Par Reduction On The Seagrass Amphibolis Griffithii (Black) Den Hartog, Paul R. Mackey Jan 2004

Effects Of Temporary Par Reduction On The Seagrass Amphibolis Griffithii (Black) Den Hartog, Paul R. Mackey

Theses : Honours

Declines in seagrass health and distribution are commonly caused through human induced reductions in the availability of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR). These reductions can result from a variety of human-induced perturbations, including channel dredging. The impetus for the research was driven by the broad-scale degradation of the ecologically important southern-Australian endemic seagrass Amphibolis griffithii (Black) den Hartog in Champion Bay, Geraldton, Western Australia. The study investigated the affects of reduced PAR on A. griffithii and identified responses that may be useful in developing management triggers to minimise the impact of PAR limitation events. The study was carried out during late …

Uses, Motivations And Community Attachment Of Social Internet Users, Laura Price

Theses : Honours

The ability of the Internet to connect users across diverse locations has resulted in the use of the Internet for social purposes, such as to communicate and interact with others online. This has created the need to study the impact of the Internet on community attachment. Motivated by conflicting views relating to the impact of the Internet on community attachment, this study addresses the relationship from a social perspective, in order to investigate the motivations for social Internet use and to assess the impact of social Internet use community attachment. A quantitative design was utilised and a self administered questionnaire …

'Married' To The Military : The Experiences Of Partners Of Australian Defence Force Members, Ngaere B. Stewart Jan 2004

'Married' To The Military : The Experiences Of Partners Of Australian Defence Force Members, Ngaere B. Stewart

Theses : Honours

This paper provides a review of the literature in order to understand the experiences of the partners of Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel. A brief overview of the early research in this area sets the context for a review of the demands of the ADF lifestyle, such as geographic mobility and lengthy operational separations from the ADF member. Military-related injuries and illness is another demand of the ADF that is also discussed. These demands are then examined within a theoretical framework of incorporation theory; the work/family fit and the family life cycle models. The overall satisfaction of ADF partners with …

Neutrosophic Dialogues, Florentin Smarandache, Feng Liu

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

Thanks to Dr. Smarandache for his interest in Chinese culture. I cannot decline his warm request to write the preface, even with my fragments of knowledge – no insight nor wisdom, and therefore can be misleading. I have been extremely regretful for my ideological errors and mistakes in previous publications, especially those concerning Buddhism. As I mentioned in this book, I am not qualified. So please note that I am limited in my knowledge and enlightenment of the giant of Chinese heritage. I can express nothing more than my personal bias. In what aspect can Chinese culture be distinctive from …

Toward A Comprehensive Response To The Transnational Migration Of Unaccompanied Minors In The United States, Carolyn J. Seugling Jan 2004

Toward A Comprehensive Response To The Transnational Migration Of Unaccompanied Minors In The United States, Carolyn J. Seugling

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

The number of unaccompanied minors seeking asylum has dramatically increased in recent years. The international response has been both varied and at times opposed to the best interests of unaccompanied minors. The United States has chosen to respond through changing unaccompanied minors' care and custody without addressing the need for changes in their substantive rights. However, it is necessary to broaden the interpretation of asylum standards to secure unaccompanied minors' legal rights as children who suffer persecution because they lack primary caregivers.

Innocent Spouses: A Critique Of The New Laws Governing Joint And Several Tax Liability, Lily Kahng Jan 2004

Innocent Spouses: A Critique Of The New Laws Governing Joint And Several Tax Liability, Lily Kahng

Faculty Articles

This article provides a framework for such interpretation and implementation of the new innocent spouse laws. The author presents an overview of the current tax law treatment of married joint filers under which joint and several liability is imposed unless relief is available under the new innocent spouse laws. The article then examines the tax rationales that have traditionally been offered for imposing joint and several liability. The author concludes that because the fiction of marital unity is deeply embedded in our tax system, joint and several liability for married joint filers is likely to remain the law. While it …

Medication Misadventures: The Interaction Of International Reference Pricing And Parallel Trade In The Pharmaceutical Industry, Lana Kraus Jan 2004

Medication Misadventures: The Interaction Of International Reference Pricing And Parallel Trade In The Pharmaceutical Industry, Lana Kraus

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

Governments in developing countries seeking to combat the rising costs of health care have increasingly focused on the pharmaceutical industry. They often set the amount they will pay for pharmaceutical prices through reference to other countries' prices when negotiating with pharmaceutical companies in an effort to control health care expenditures. This system of international reference pricing inhibits access to essential pharmaceuticals in underdeveloped countries and decreases pharmaceutical innovation and equitable research and development cost-sharing between developed countries.

This Note explores the tension between market forces in the pharmaceutical industry and promoting pharmaceutical innovation, equitable research, development cost-sharing, and access to …

Old Man And The Sky: The Brazilian Antitrust Implications For Rupert Murdoch's Expansion Of The Sky Global Satellite Network, Geoffrey Drake Jan 2004

Old Man And The Sky: The Brazilian Antitrust Implications For Rupert Murdoch's Expansion Of The Sky Global Satellite Network, Geoffrey Drake

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

To expand its global satellite network to the United States, Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation purchased DirecTV in 2003. Brazil's antitrust regulatory body, CADE, has expressed concern about a potential monopoly in the Brazilian satellite market controlled by Murdoch because News' Sky Latin America competes directly with DirecTV. If News opts to combine the two Brazilian satellite services, it will consolidate control of ninety-five percent of Brazil's satellite market, leaving satellite and cable competitors at a disadvantage. The Author argues that CADE should conditionally approve the acquisition because of the combination's ability to benefit Brazilian consumers, the government, and News Corporation …

The Politics Of Infertility: Recognizing Coverage Exclusions As Discrimination, Elizabeth Pendo Jan 2004

The Politics Of Infertility: Recognizing Coverage Exclusions As Discrimination, Elizabeth Pendo

Articles

Infertility affects approximately ten percent of the reproductive-age population in the United States, and strikes people of every race, ethnicity and socio-economic level. It is recognized by the medical community as a disease, one with devastating physical, psychological, and financial effects. Nonetheless, comprehensive coverage of infertility treatments under employer-sponsored plans - where, like Jane, most Americans get health insurance - appears to be the exception rather than the rule. Can Jane sue for disability discrimination, sex discrimination, or both? While the answer - "it depends" - should not be surprising to anyone who has survived even a semester of law …

What’S In A Name?: Seeing Feminism, Universalism, And Modernity, Zillah Ruth Eisenstein Jan 2004

What’S In A Name?: Seeing Feminism, Universalism, And Modernity, Zillah Ruth Eisenstein

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

Women’s rights activists have claimed–and disowned–the label “feminist.” This article revisits old questions in feminist discourse and probes what feminism(s) mean today for women across the globe. It explores the possibility of a polyversal feminism which expresses women’s potential humanity and moves beyond divisions. The plural acts of resistance to Empire are neither western or non-western. Women activists are encouraged to radically pluralize, rather than liberally pluralize the concept of feminism.

When The Safety Net Fails: An Analysis Of Alternative Long-Term Care Services In Kentucky, Suzanne Dale Jan 2004

When The Safety Net Fails: An Analysis Of Alternative Long-Term Care Services In Kentucky, Suzanne Dale

MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects

The Problem

In early 2003, the Kentucky Cabinet for Health Services, faced with a $450 million Medicaid shortfall, implemented several cost-cutting measures to the Medicaid program. The most visible measure included new stricter medical eligibility requirements for long-term care programs. As a result of these new requirements, approximately 2,813 elderly and disabled Kentuckians were denied services in Kentucky’s Aged/Disabled Home and Community-Based Waiver Program, a Medicaid program that provides long-term care services in people’s homes and in community-settings. The Cabinet for Health Services claimed that those who lost home and community-based Medicaid services could receive care through alternative state programs. …

Case Comments: Constitutional Law: Reaffirming Every Floridian’S Broad And Fundamental Right To Privacy, Diane Lourdes Dick

Faculty Articles

In this article Professor Diane Lourdes Dick examines the Parental Notice of Abortion Act (the Act) that was passed in 1999 by the Florida Legislature, which required minors seeking an abortion to either notify a parent prior to the procedure or obtain court approval to waive parental notice. A minor choosing the latter option must demonstrate to a court that she is either mature enough to make the decision or that, despite a court's finding that she lacks sufficient maturity, parental notification is clearly not in her best interest. The statute has never been enforced and the right to privacy …

Latin American Resistance Movements In The Time Of The Posts, Glen Kuecker Jan 2004

Latin American Resistance Movements In The Time Of The Posts, Glen Kuecker

History Faculty publications

This article examines the flood of resistance movements in today’s Latin America. It places them in the context of the great economic changes that have swept the world since the end of the Cold War, what is often called “globalization.” Analysis focuses on the “newness” of our contemporary period, especially the importance of the transnational political and economic order. This essay illustrates how social scientists attempt to understand this moment of change, and emphasizes the limitations to their theory. Special emphasis is on the utility of New Social Movement theory as a tool for understanding today’s resistance movements as well …

Disability And Identity, Stacey L. Coffman Jan 2004

Disability And Identity, Stacey L. Coffman

Master of Liberal Studies Theses

Chapter 1 establishes my search for reflections of my identities in the larger culture. I describe my search for recognition in a culture that glorifies the "able" bodied and explore why difference must be explored from multiple contexts.

Chapter 2 describes the methodology I chose for this project and how it reflects the nature of the perspectives I utilize. It explores the difficulties and rewards of autoethnographic work.

Chapter 3 describes the process of identity formation. Since this project views disability as a construct, I must determine which forces create and perpetuate our identity as human beings. I also explore …

Outer South East Livable Infill Project, Debbie Collard, Kristine Dos Remedios, Krista Hornaday, Harper Kalin, Ying Lin, Kris Sorensen

Master of Urban and Regional Planning Workshop Projects

The City of Portland, Oregon has experienced unprecedented population growth in the last decade, much of which has been accommodated through infill development. Not all infi ll development has contributed to meeting design goals, prompting the City’s Bureau of Planning to launch the Infill Design Project in 2003. The Infill Design Project aims to improve the design of multi-dwelling and rowhouse development outside the Central City. This study supports the Infill Design Project by studying the design of new, multi-family infi ll development in a section of Outer Southeast Portland, Oregon. Through public outreach, this study identifies community design preferences …
