Heterochromatic Silencing And Hp1 Localization In Drosophila Are Dependent On The Rnai Machinery, Manika Pal-Bhadra, Boris Leibovitch, Sumit Gandhi, Madhusudana Rao Chikka, Utpal Bhadra, James Birchler, Sarah C.R. Elgin Jan 2004

Heterochromatic Silencing And Hp1 Localization In Drosophila Are Dependent On The Rnai Machinery, Manika Pal-Bhadra, Boris Leibovitch, Sumit Gandhi, Madhusudana Rao Chikka, Utpal Bhadra, James Birchler, Sarah C.R. Elgin

Biology Faculty Research

Genes normally resident in euchromatic domains are silenced when packaged into heterochromatin, as exemplified in Drosophila melanogaster by position effect variegation (PEV). Loss-of-function mutations resulting in suppression of PEV have identified critical components of heterochromatin, including proteins HP1, HP2, and histone H3 lysine 9 methyltransferase. Here, we demonstrate that this silencing is dependent on the RNA interference machinery, using tandem mini-white arrays and white transgenes in heterochromatin to show loss of silencing as a result of mutations in piwi, aubergine, or spindle-E (homeless), which encode RNAi components. These mutations result in reduction of H3 Lys9 methylation and delocalization of HP1 …

With Strings Attached: The Limits On Local Control, Richard Briffault Jan 2004

With Strings Attached: The Limits On Local Control, Richard Briffault

Faculty Scholarship

In a December 2003 decision, a Colorado trial court judge invalidated the state's new school voucher program. The decision was unusual in that the court relied not on traditional separation-of-church-and-state concerns, but instead on a provision of the Colorado state constitution that vests control over public education in local school boards. The court held that by failing to give local school boards any" input whatsoever into the instruction to be offered by the private schools" that accepted voucher students, the state had violated the constitutional provision that grants local boards "control of instruction in the public schools of their respective …

Optical Characterization Of Ceramic Thin Films: Applications In Low-Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel-Cell Materials Research, B. P. Gorman, V. Petrovsky, Harlan U. Anderson, T. Petrovsky

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Characterization of thin film solid oxide fuel-cell materials can be difficult due to the range of porosities in electrodes and electrolytes as well as the nano-sized pores and particles. in this study, optical characterization techniques such as ultraviolet-visible transmission and reflection spectrophotometry are illustrated as methods for achieving information about the film density from the film refractive index as well as the film thickness. These techniques were used to investigate the sintering process of colloidal CeO2 on sapphire substrates and polymeric precursor-derived ZrO2:16%Y (YSZ) thin films on silicon over the temperature range 400-1000 °C, and the results …

Climate Change In Arid Environments: Revisiting The Past To Understand The Future, Elena Lioubimtseva Jan 2004

Climate Change In Arid Environments: Revisiting The Past To Understand The Future, Elena Lioubimtseva

Peer Reviewed Articles

Arid regions are expected to undergo significant changes under a scenario of climate warming, but there is considerable variability and uncertainty in these estimates between different scenarios. The complexities of precipitation changes, vegetation–climate feedbacks and direct physiological effects of CO2 on vegetation present particular challenges for climate change modelling of arid regions. Great uncertainties exist in the prediction of arid ecosystem responses to elevated CO2 and global warming. Palaeodata provide important information about the past frequency, intensity and subregional patterns of change in the world’s deserts that cannot always be captured by the climatic models. However, it is important to …

Financing Environmental Change: A New Role For Canadian Environmental Law, Benjamin J. Richardson Jan 2004

Financing Environmental Change: A New Role For Canadian Environmental Law, Benjamin J. Richardson

Articles & Book Chapters

Financial institutions occupy a central role in equity and debt markets, providing the finance that shapes economic development and thus environmental pressures. Environmental regulation has traditionally focused on development itself but not those that financially sponsor developers. To achieve an environmentally sustainable economy in Canada, new regulations and policies to promote environmentally friendly financing in the financial services sector are necessary. This article explains why financing environmental change is crucial, surveys the main private financial institutions in Canada relevant to this task, and makes recommendations on how financial regulation and its broader institutional context can be reformed to support sustainable …

Constitutional Courage, Harry W. Arthurs Jan 2004

Constitutional Courage, Harry W. Arthurs

Articles & Book Chapters

In this lecture, Professor Arthurs argues that we are currently in need of "constitutional courage"-the courage to say "no" to ambitious projects of constitutional reform and constitutional litigation as a way to solve our pressing social and political problems. Professor Arthurs first lays out why our current obsession with the constitution is problematic. He insists that we do not even know what the supposed "supreme law of Canada" actually is, what it says, or even what it does. Moreover, instead of transforming society, the current "cult of constitutionalism" has only served to transform legal practice and scholarship. ei then surmises …

Welfare Law, Welfare Fraud And The Moral Regulation Of The 'Never Deserving' Poor, Shelley A. M. Gavigan, Dorothy E. Chunn Jan 2004

Welfare Law, Welfare Fraud And The Moral Regulation Of The 'Never Deserving' Poor, Shelley A. M. Gavigan, Dorothy E. Chunn

Articles & Book Chapters

The dismantling and restructuring of Keynesian social security programmes have impacted disproportionately on women, especially lone parent mothers, and shifted public discourse and social images from welfare fraud to welfare as fraud, thereby linking poverty, welfare and crime. This article analyzes the current, inordinate focus on 'welfare cheats'. The criminalization of poverty raises theoretical and empirical questions related to regulation, control, and the relationship between them at particular historical moments. Moral regulation scholars working within post-structuralist and post-modern frameworks have developed an influential approach to these issues, however, we situate ourselves in a different stream of critical socio-legal studies that takes …

The "Terminator" Patent And Its Discontents: Rethinking The Normative Deficit In Utility Test Of Modern Patent Law, Ikechi Mgbeoji Jan 2004

The "Terminator" Patent And Its Discontents: Rethinking The Normative Deficit In Utility Test Of Modern Patent Law, Ikechi Mgbeoji

Articles & Book Chapters

Arguably, no other biotechnological invention has been excoriated with so much confused rhetoric on “utility” as the invention relating to Genetic Use Restriction Technologies (“GURTs”) patented in the United States, Canada, Australia, Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark and many other countries. Otherwise known by their rather inflammatory nickname of both “terminator patents,” GURTs have become the lightning rod for both technophiles and Luddites. At the heart of the controversy is a misunderstanding of the changed meaning of the concept of utility in patent law. This paper argues that while the public understanding of utility as social usefulness is well grounded in history …

Motivation, Drug Abuse, And 50 Years Of Theoretical And Empirical Inquiry, Rick A. Bevins, Michael Bardo Jan 2004

Motivation, Drug Abuse, And 50 Years Of Theoretical And Empirical Inquiry, Rick A. Bevins, Michael Bardo

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

In reviewing the 25-year history of the Nebraska Symposium on Motivation, Benjamin and Jones (1979) noted that the Symposium was "the longest-lived topical series in American psychology, with 'I national and international reputation" (p. ix). On March 28 and 29 of 2002, with a packed auditorium on the campus of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, this record was doubled in life. As the reader will quickly see from the list of contributors, the reputation of the Symposium was also maintained on its 50th Anniversary. Before continuing, we would like to reiterate the thanks in the Preface for all those who supported …

Drive, Incentive, And Reinforcement: The Antecedents And Consequences Of Motivation, Roy Wise Jan 2004

Drive, Incentive, And Reinforcement: The Antecedents And Consequences Of Motivation, Roy Wise

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The aim of scientific explanation is to characterize the important antecedents of observable (or at least objectively confirmable) events. Explanations of behavior in terms of motivational states are appeals to unobservable, internal events for interpretations of behavior that is variable under apparently constant external stimulus conditions (see, e.g., Brown, 1953; Hinde, 1960). To be identified as the cause of a behavior, the unobservable event or condition must preexist the behavioral event to be explained. A behavior cannot be explained by its consequences, though it may be explained as a consequence of similar events in the animal's history. Scientific explanation involves …

Legal Dimensions Of Adolescent Sexuality, Roxanne Mykitiuk, Stephanie Turnham

Articles & Book Chapters

The ethical and legal obligations with respect to treating a minor can be confusing, particularly in the areas of consent to treatment, confidentiality, and parental involvement. The clinician must be aware of the appropriate course of practice when the patient is an adolescent seeking care for contraception, pregnancy, or sexually transmitted infections. This article examines a number of ethical and legal issues that arise when providing reproductive and sexual health care to an adolescent and offers recommendations for the physician’s most appropriate courses of action regarding adolescent patients and the age of consent to sexual activity, reporting of child abuse, …

Parenting, Julia C. Torquati Jan 2004

Parenting, Julia C. Torquati

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

How can parents successfully care for their children in the context of homelessness? This is a significant question because families with children represent approximately 40 percent of the homeless population in the United States, and the number of homeless children has been growing since the early 1980s. Negative consequences of homelessness to children’s health, education, and emotional and social development have been well documented. Homeless families in the United States can be considered a subset of limited-resource families, and as such they share some of the same challenges to effective parenting. However, homeless parents face additional challenges, and these challenges …

Receiving The Headian Legacy: International Lawyers, South-To-North Resource Transfers, And The Challenge Of International Development, Obiora Chinedu Okafor

Articles & Book Chapters

Written over fifteen years ago by Ivan Leigh Head, a highly distinguished Canadian international lawyer, foreign policy expert, and international development thinker, the words contained in the above quotation point firmly at this great man's analytic incisiveness and hint at the sheer depth of his fairness of mind. For although the net transfer of resources from the much poorer geopolitical "South" to a far richer "North" remains to this day one of the most important obstacles to international development, rarely have the dominant accounts of international development given this phenomenon the pride of place that it surely deserves.

Is East Asia Industrializing Too Quickly? Environmental Regulation In Its Special Economic Zones , Benjamin J. Richardson Jan 2004

Is East Asia Industrializing Too Quickly? Environmental Regulation In Its Special Economic Zones , Benjamin J. Richardson

Articles & Book Chapters

East Asia is undergoing its own Industrial Revolution. Special economic zones (SEZs) are playing a key role in its economic transformation. However, industrialization has brought great environmental concern. Over recent decades, China, the Philippines, South Korea, and other newly industrializing economies in East Asia have designated special areas for foreign investment and export production to which have been conceded favourable investment and trade conditions, and often exemption from certain kinds of regulation. "Race to the bottom" and related theories of the effects of inter-jurisdictional competition for investment predict that environmental regulation would be compromised in SEZs. Contrary to such hypotheses, …

The Economic Basis Of Cooperation: Tradeoffs Between Selfishness And Generosity, Jeffrey R. Stevens, David W. Stephens Jan 2004

The Economic Basis Of Cooperation: Tradeoffs Between Selfishness And Generosity, Jeffrey R. Stevens, David W. Stephens

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The current study examined the economics of cooperation in controlled-payoff games by using captive blue jays, Cyanocitta cristata. This investigation used a special feeding apparatus to test for the stability of cooperative choice in a series of iterated games. The jays experienced experimentally determined game theoretical payoff matrices, which determined the distribution of food to themselves and their opponent, depending on their decision to cooperate or defect. The experiment tested four game matrices, called the cooperate only, defect only, prisoner’s dilemma, and opponent control treatments. This study found little cooperation in the defect only and prisoner’s dilemma treatments. Cooperation …

Cognitive Constraints On Reciprocity And Tolerated Scrounging, Jeffrey R. Stevens, Fiery A. Cushman Jan 2004

Cognitive Constraints On Reciprocity And Tolerated Scrounging, Jeffrey R. Stevens, Fiery A. Cushman

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Commentary on Gurven: "To give and to give not: The behavioral ecology of human food transfers"

Each of the food-sharing models that Gurven considers demands unique cognitive capacities. Reciprocal altruism, in particular, requires a suite of complex abilities not required by alternatives such as tolerated scrounging. Integrating cognitive constraints with comparative data from other species can illuminate the adaptive benefits of food sharing in humans.

Why Be Nice? Psychological Constraints On The Evolution Of Cooperation, Jeffrey R. Stevens, Marc D. Hauser Jan 2004

Why Be Nice? Psychological Constraints On The Evolution Of Cooperation, Jeffrey R. Stevens, Marc D. Hauser

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Animals often aid others without gaining any immediate benefits. Although these acts seem to reduce the donor’s fitness, they are only apparently altruistic. Donors typically help because they or their kin receive future benefits or avoid costly punishment. Reciprocal altruism— alternating the roles of donor and recipient—has been a well-studied form of cooperation among non-kin because of its intuitive appeal in explaining human cooperation. Despite immense theoretical interest, little empirical evidence substantiates the biological importance of reciprocal altruism in non-human animals. We propose that this is because psychological mechanisms constrain its application in cooperative contexts. In particular, we contend that …

Addressing Scientific Literacy Through Content Area Reading And Proces, Susan Cooper Jan 2004

Addressing Scientific Literacy Through Content Area Reading And Proces, Susan Cooper

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to interpret the experiences of secondary science teachers in Florida as they address the scientific literacy of their students through teaching content reading strategies and student inquiry skills. Knowledge of the successful integration of content reading and inquiry skills by experienced classroom teachers would be useful to many educators as they plan instruction to achieve challenging state and national standards for reading as well as science. The problem was investigated using grounded theory methodology. Open-ended questions were asked in three focus groups and six individual interviews that included teachers from various Florida school districts. …

Coed Adolescent Soccer Players In A Competitive Learning Milieu: An Ethnographic Assessment Of Gender Attitudes, Perceptions And Sport Specific Component Testing, Francis O'Donnell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The history of association soccer dates back to the 1800's, and all indications are that prospects for the female athlete was scarce in all sports. The researcher has arranged an environment where young females can train with males in a soccer setting that has all the necessary elements for the athletes to learn, improve and compete with their own gender as well as opposite gender. The female group has been noticeable underachievers in this sport and is not aware of their potential. The research methodology is ethnographic in nature and study could easily be related to a traditional way to …

Determinants Of Financial Condition: A Study Of U.S. Cities, Lynda Dennis Jan 2004

Determinants Of Financial Condition: A Study Of U.S. Cities, Lynda Dennis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

How well a local government is able to provide for the needs and preferences of its citizens generally depends on the financial resources available; and, how such resources are allocated, distributed, and managed. Demographics, size of local government, supply and age of infrastructure, financial position of the government, and the local economy represent a few of the factors affecting what public goods and services citizens prefer. Internal systems of accounting and control affect the allocation, distribution, and management of financial resources. As such, these internal systems significantly affect the provision of public goods and services. The research outlined in this …

Non-Prescription And Household Substances Of Abuse, J. Mallari, L. Nguyen, Jeffery A. Goad Jan 2004

Non-Prescription And Household Substances Of Abuse, J. Mallari, L. Nguyen, Jeffery A. Goad

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

"Reasons for abuse of [household products and over-the-counter (OTC) medications] can vary widely depending on the type of product used. Because these items can be readily found in pharmacies and stores, it is important for pharmacists to become familiar with the signs and symptoms of abuse, and street names by which these agents are known (see Table 1). Pharmacists, especially in the community setting, may be able to identify patterns of abuse since they are in contact with patients more frequently than other healthcare providers."

The Vagaries Of Informed Consent, George P. Smith Ii Jan 2004

The Vagaries Of Informed Consent, George P. Smith Ii

Scholarly Articles

The purpose of this Article is to probe the foundations and applications of informed consent in a variety of situations and thereby test its validity. The conclusion to be drawn from this analysis is that while the doctrine has yet to become an integral part of the ethos of medicine, it still provides an important mechanism for maintaining a purposeful discourse between physician and patient and, as such, nurturing and preserving their essential partnership of healing and trust.

Inclusion Literature: Ideas For Teachers And Teacher Educators, Sharon A. Hollander Psy. D.

Electronic Journal for Inclusive Education

Inclusion is certainly a wonderful idea. Sadly, it does not happen by itself. In reality, teachers are responsible for making inclusion work in the classroom. Every day, inclusive educators are faced with the significant challenge of creating a classroom environment where all children are accepted. Children’s literature can play an important role in this effort.
