(2004) The Political And Social Ends Of Philosophy, Philip C. Guin Jan 2004

(2004) The Political And Social Ends Of Philosophy, Philip C. Guin

Collected Papers of Philip C. Guin

In this article, Guin responds to Walter Omar Kohan’s Presidential Address at the Tenth Conference of the International Council of Philosophy with Children, “Education, Philosophy, and Childhood: The Need to Think an Encounter” (published in Thinking: The Journal of Philosophy for Children 16(1): 4-11, attached here), in which Kohan argues that “philosophy for children is not as transformative, as revolutionary, as radical, as it is needs to be in order to make any difference in these neo-capitalistic, global times.” Guin argues, contrarily, that the education in tools of inquiry, social solidarity, and interdependent thinking provided by philosophy for children is …

The Obligation Of Physicians To Medical Outliers: A Kantian And Hegelian Synthesis, Thomas J. Papadimos, Alan P. Marco Jan 2004

The Obligation Of Physicians To Medical Outliers: A Kantian And Hegelian Synthesis, Thomas J. Papadimos, Alan P. Marco

Anesthesiology Faculty Publications

Background

Patients who present to medical practices without health insurance or with serious co-morbidities can become fiscal disasters to those who care for them. Their consumption of scarce resources has caused consternation among providers and institutions, especially as it concerns the amount and type of care they should receive. In fact, some providers may try to avoid caring for them altogether, or at least try to limit their institutional or practice exposure to them.

Discussion

We present a philosophical discourse, with emphasis on the writings of Immanuel Kant and G.F.W. Hegel, as to why physicians have the moral imperative to …

This report summarizes the activities of the NH Department of Environmental Services (NHDES) Shellfish Program for the period of January 2004 to December 2004. The NHDES Shellfish Program conducts a number of activities to minimize the health risks associated with consuming shellfish, and to continue to comply with National Shellfish Sanitation Program guidelines. Among basic program functions is a routine water quality monitoring program, which involved the collection of nearly 800 samples at over 70 sites in 2004, the results of which are used to ensure that assessments of water quality for all areas are kept up-to-date. Weekly “red tide” …

PREP Reports & Publications

The Department of Environmental Services received funding from the New Hampshire Estuaries Project (NHEP) to conduct monitoring activities in 2003. The activities involved water monitoring in tidal tributaries and contaminant analyses of mussel tissue. These monitoring activities were completed with the overall purpose of improving the understanding of water quality trends and the concentrations of toxic contaminants in shellfish tissue. The Department of Environmental Services, in cooperation with the University of New Hampshire Jackson Estuarine Lab and others, completed all tasks as planned. This report includes the sample collection information, field data, and laboratory data, with the exception of contaminant …

Informed Consent For Medical Research: Case Studies, Catherine A. Marco Jan 2004

Informed Consent For Medical Research: Case Studies, Catherine A. Marco

Emergency Medicine Faculty Publications

Informed consent for medical research is an essential, but challenging, process to assure the protection of the rights of potential research subjects. Numerous barriers to the informed consent process exist among patients, including impaired decisional capacity, impaired cognition, language barriers, illiteracy, insufficient time and communication, and numerous others. Because of the inherent vulnerability of patients, particular attention should be paid to addressing barriers to adequate informed consent, and steps should be taken to ensure adequate delivery of information, understanding of the study and its risks and benefits, and voluntariness of the informed consent.
