Effects Of Modified Constraint Induced Therapy On Upper Limb Function In Subacute Stroke Patients., Abdul-Alim A. Atteya

Neurosciences

OBJECTIVE: To examine the feasibility and efficacy of a modified constraint induced therapy protocol on stroke patients. METHODS: This study was carried out during the period from August 2001 to January 2002 at the Riyadh Medical Complex, Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Six stroke patients with subacute cerebrovascular accident (<6 months) were included in the study. Three male and 3 female patients with a mean age of 54.3+/-6.9 years (range 45-67 years), and mean duration of hemiparesis of 4.7 months (range 2.3-5.8 months). They were divided randomly into 3 groups of 2 patients. The first 2 patients (constraint induced therapy group) participated in half an hour of physical and occupational therapy sessions 3 times per week for 10 weeks. During the same period, their unaffected arms and hands were restrained 5 days per week for 5 hours identified as times of frequent use. The second 2 patients (traditional therapy group) received regular therapy administered after 10 weeks. The last 2 patients (control group) received no therapy. The Fugl-Meyer Assessment of Motor Recovery After Stroke (Fugl), Action Research Arm Test (ARA), Wolf Motor Function Test (WMFT), and Motor Activity Log (MAL) were administered to the patients. RESULTS: Patients receiving modified constraint induced therapy exhibited substantial improvement on the Fugl, ARA, and WMFT, as well as increases in amount and quality of use of the limb using the MAL. While patients receiving traditional physical and occupational therapy, and no therapy patients exhibited few improvements. CONCLUSION: Modified constraint induced therapy may be an efficacious method of improving function and use of the affected arms in stroke patients exhibiting learned nonuse.

Improving The Reproductive Health Of Youth In Mexico, Ricardo Vernon, Maricela Dura Jan 2004

Improving The Reproductive Health Of Youth In Mexico, Ricardo Vernon, Maricela Dura

Reproductive Health

This project assessed the impact of the Mexican Foundation for Family Planning’s Young People Program (YPP) on: a) the attitudes of community stakeholders toward informing youth about reproductive health issues and making reproductive health services available for sexually-active youth; b) the sexual and reproductive health knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of adolescents; and c) the way that providers offer reproductive health services to adolescents. In addition, the project determined whether adding a school-based sex education component increased the impact of community interventions on the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of adolescents. Survey results showed that the reproductive health knowledge and attitudes of …

Reproductive Health

In October 1999, the Frontiers in Reproductive Health (FRONTIERS) program began a three-year collaboration with the World Health Organization, the Senegal Ministries of Health, Education, and Youth, the Center for Research and Training in Health and Population, and the Population Training Group to test interventions to improve the reproductive health of youth aged 10–19. The community-based intervention included sensitization on adolescent reproductive health for community and religious leaders, reaching parents through women’s groups, and education sessions led by peer educators using a life-skills curriculum. As part of the clinic-based intervention, providers and peer educators were trained to offer youth-friendly services. …

Women Alcoholics And Addicts : An Examination Of The Role Of Gender-Specific Treatment Programs In Substance Abuse Counseling, Adarienne L. Burrow Jan 2004

Women Alcoholics And Addicts : An Examination Of The Role Of Gender-Specific Treatment Programs In Substance Abuse Counseling, Adarienne L. Burrow

Graduate Research Papers

Traditionally, substance abuse treatment programs have been developed based on data collected on male substance abusers. Women entering into these traditional treatment programs often are not successful at recovery. Male-based treatment programs are not designed to meet the complex set of needs of women substance abusers and addicts. The purpose of this research is two-fold. First, to identify the specific needs of women substance abusers and addicts. And secondly, determine how to address these identified needs in a substance abuse treatment program in order to provide a holistic approach to substance abusing and addicted women.

Traditional Marriage: Still Worth Defending, George W. Dent Jan 2004

Traditional Marriage: Still Worth Defending, George W. Dent

Faculty Publications

A few years ago, I wrote an article entitled The Defense of Traditional Marriage.1 I began with the topic of same-sex marriage but soon saw that all the arguments for gay marriage were also arguments for polygamy, endogamy (or incestuous marriage), etc., so the article became a defense of traditional marriage against all these other types. The pertinent law and jurisprudence are constantly changing, so this conference offers an excellent opportunity to reconsider my views in light of new learning and thinking. A review shows the case for traditional marriage is even stronger now than it was before. As evidence …

Taking Another Ride On Flopper: Benjamin Cardozo, Safe Space, And The Cultural Significance Of Coney Island, Robert N. Strassfeld Jan 2004

Taking Another Ride On Flopper: Benjamin Cardozo, Safe Space, And The Cultural Significance Of Coney Island, Robert N. Strassfeld

Faculty Publications

This article examines the history and cultural meaning of Coney Island and its amusement parks, as well as Cardozo's biography, in an effort to discover the basis for that feeling of contempt. It shows that a variety of attributes of Coney Island, most notably its embrace of what was, for its day, a robust and open sexuality and carnival spirit, were alien and threatening to Cardozo's Victorian values. It also shows how this clash of values would have naturally inclined Cardozo to think of Coney Island as a dangerous place and led him to Murphy's assumption of risk analysis. It …

Is There A Place For Race As A Legal Concept, Sharona Hoffman Jan 2004

Is There A Place For Race As A Legal Concept, Sharona Hoffman

Faculty Publications

What does "race" mean? The word "race" is omnipresent in American social, political, and legal discourse. The concept of "race" is central to contemporary debate about affirmative action, racial profiling, hate crimes, health inequities, and many other issues. Nevertheless, the best research in genetics, medicine, and the social sciences reveals that the concept of "race" is elusive and has no reliable definition.

This article argues that "race" is an unnecessary and potentially pernicious concept. As evidenced by the history of slavery, segregation, the Holocaust, and other human tragedies, the idea of "race" can perpetuate prejudices and misconceptions and serve as …

The Fable Of Federal Regulation: Reconsidering The Federal Role In Environmental Protection, Jonathan H. Adler

Faculty Publications

This essay posits that many federal environmental laws were adopted for the wrong rea- sons. Further, it suggests that environmental protections could be improved if more policy decisions were left in the hands of state and local governments.

Good Enough To Use For Research, But Not Good Enough To Benefit From The Results Of That Research: Are The Clinical Hiv Vaccine Trials In Africa Unjust?, Ruqaiijah Yearby

Faculty Publications

The epidemic of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection in Sub-Saharan Africa, the region most affected by the HIV pandemic and where HIV is the leading cause of death, is reaching insurmountable proportions. In fact, out of the 36.1 million HIV infections worldwide, 25.3 million, seventy percent, are in Sub-Saharan Africa. Additionally, of the more than 15,000 people who are infected with HIV every day, ninety-five percent of the cases are in populations that live in developing countries such as those located in Sub-Saharan Africa. Due to the significant number of Africans infected with HIV, many researchers and ethicists have …

‘Lose In Vietnam, Bring Our Boys Home’, Robert N. Strassfeld Jan 2004

‘Lose In Vietnam, Bring Our Boys Home’, Robert N. Strassfeld

Faculty Publications

This Article examines the contest over dissent and loyalty during the Vietnam War. The Johnson and Nixon Administrations used an array of weapons to discourage or silence antiwar opposition. These included criminal prosecutions for "disloyal speech," a tool that they used with less frequency than some other administrations in times of war; prosecutions for other "crimes" that served as pretext for prosecuting disloyal speech; infiltration and harassment; and an attempt to characterize their critics as disloyal. The antiwar movement, in turn, responded to allegations that dissent equaled disloyalty by offering an alternative vision of loyalty and patriotism. In so doing, …

The Trouble With Taxes: Fairness, Tax Policy, And The Constitution, Leo P. Martinez Jan 2004

The Trouble With Taxes: Fairness, Tax Policy, And The Constitution, Leo P. Martinez

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

Fairness stands for a complicated set of moral and practical instructions inculcated in us since childhood. Consequently, fairness presents knotty problems of application for legal and policy analysts in the formulation of tax policy. This article probes the contours of the concept of fairness in taxation. I begin and end with the observation that fairness or the perception of fairness in taxation is a deceptively unsophisticated proposition. Part I includes a brief description of the public perception of fairness in the context of taxation. Part II follows with an exploration of the concept of fairness as a fundamental tenet of …

Viewpoint Neutral Zoning Of Adult Entertainment Businesses, Shima Baradaran-Robison Jan 2004

Viewpoint Neutral Zoning Of Adult Entertainment Businesses, Shima Baradaran-Robison

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

Zoning of strip clubs, adult video stores, and other adult entertainment businesses is a frequent source of controversy and litigation in many American cities. Community members often oppose strip clubs moving into their city and many cities try to keep these businesses as far from public life as possible. The Supreme Court's First Amendment law has not helped this struggle. In fact, the current "secondary effects" test used by the Supreme Court has actually made it more difficult for cities to zone adult businesses. Although a few commentators have expressed their disapproval of the secondary effects test, they have all …

Supreme Court Voting Behavior: 2002 Term, Richard G. Wilkins, Scott Worthington, Sara Becker, Lorianne Updike

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

The results of the 2002 Study - as with the Study last Term - reveal continued polarization and voting instability on the United States Supreme Court. Only two categories of cases, Civil/State and Civil/Federal, were decided by predominantly unanimous opinions. Yet, while the Justices voted in fairly consistent "conservative" and "liberal" blocs, neither wing of the Court seems able to consistently garnish the "fifth vote" crucial to a definitive liberal or conservative trend. As a result, the Rehnquist Court may have lost its conservative momentum. The data suggest several possible explanations for this development. Justice O'Connor is again the Court's …

From Kierkegaard To Kennedy: Existentialist Philosophy In The Supreme Court's Decision In Planned Parenthood V. Casey And Its Effect On The Right To Privacy, Rebecca Rabkin Jan 2004

From Kierkegaard To Kennedy: Existentialist Philosophy In The Supreme Court's Decision In Planned Parenthood V. Casey And Its Effect On The Right To Privacy, Rebecca Rabkin

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

In the landmark 1992 abortion right case, Planned Parenthood v. Casey, the United States Supreme Court created a new dimension to the right to privacy, not previously articulated in the Court's fourteenth amendment jurisprudence: the right to philosophical privacy. The ideas promulgated by the plurality in that case echo themes found in the work of Existentialist philosophers, such as Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Sarte and Camus. These themes, central to the work of many Existentialist scholars, include a rejection of the idea of an objective Truth and the Platonic theory of forms, the refusal to view traditional religious beliefs as a moral …

Organizing In The Garment Industry In Mexico: Implications For New Social Movement Theory, Victoria Carty Jan 2004

Organizing In The Garment Industry In Mexico: Implications For New Social Movement Theory, Victoria Carty

Sociology Faculty Articles and Research

This paper examines attempts to improve workers' rights in the Maquila Industry in Mexico by using two case studies. It analyzes the struggles that recently occurred at the Kukdong and Duro plants. The underlying question of the research is how to balance the co-existence of market economies with effective means to ensure adequate conditions for workers, and most importantly, ensuring their right to freedom of association. Under recent forms of global economic restructuring, the state is often unwilling or unable to uphold workers' rights. To combat the present form of corporate-driven global capitalism, workers in the South, in solidarity with …
