Center on Children, Families, and the Law (and Related Organizations): Publications

In 2000, university researchers at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Iowa State University, University of Kansas and the University of Missouri and state child care and early education program partners in four states (Missouri, Iowa, Kansas, and Nebraska) initiated the Midwest Child Care Research Consortium (MCCRC). The focus of the Consortium’s work is to conduct a multiyear study on a range of issues associated with child care quality and conditions. Across the four states, a stratified random selection of 2,022 child care providers participated in a telephone survey conducted by the Gallup Organization, representing licensed child care centers, licensed family child …

PURPOSE: To assess physician use of erythropoietin in cancer patients before publication of the American Society of Clinical Oncology/American Society of Hematology guidelines.
METHODS: Questionnaires about erythropoietin use in practice and 12 hypothetical clinical scenarios involving patients with cancer were mailed to 2000 oncologists/hematologists in the United States and 19 other countries. Response rates were 30% in the United States and 25% internationally. Data on erythropoietin use for ovarian cancer were obtained from one clinical trial. Multivariate regression models assessed predictors of erythropoietin prescription.
RESULTS: Most physicians selected a hemoglobin level ≤10 g/dL as an upper threshold for erythropoietin use …

The C-Type Lectin Sign-R1 Mediates Uptake Of The Capsular Polysaccharide Of Streptococcus Pneumoniae In The Marginal Zone Of Mouse Spleen, Youngsun Kang, Jae Y. Kim, Sandra A. Bruening Jan 2004

The C-Type Lectin Sign-R1 Mediates Uptake Of The Capsular Polysaccharide Of Streptococcus Pneumoniae In The Marginal Zone Of Mouse Spleen, Youngsun Kang, Jae Y. Kim, Sandra A. Bruening

Publications

SIGN-R1, a recently discovered C-type lectin expressed at high levels on macrophages within the marginal zone of the spleen, mediates the uptake of dextran polysaccharides by these phagocytes. We now find that encapsulated Streptococcus pneumoniae are rapidly cleared by these macrophages from the bloodstream, and that capture also takes place when different cell lines express SIGN-R1 after transfection. To assess the role of the capsular polysaccharide of S. pneumoniae(CPS) in the interaction of SIGN-R1 with pneumococci, we first studied binding and uptake of serotype 14 CPS in transfected cells. Binding was observed and was of a much higher avidity (3,000-fold) …

Roles For The E3 Ligase Itch In Immune Response Modulation, Sukhvinder Kaur Sahota Jan 2004

Roles For The E3 Ligase Itch In Immune Response Modulation, Sukhvinder Kaur Sahota

Student Theses and Dissertations

Cloning of the inversion breakpoints in the agouti mutant strain a has implicated the E3 ligase Itch in the spontaneous inflammation that occurs in these mice. 1 RH Anaylsis of a mice suggests that the inflammatory disease is due to a dysregulated T helper type-2 immune response. In order to verify the importance of Itch inactivation in the spontaneous inflammation of a mice and to determine which cell type is responsible for the pathology, the Itch gene has been targeted for conditional deletion in mice using the Cre-loxP system. The results presented in this thesis provide the first direct evidence …

Site And Mechanism Of Leptin's Antisteatotic And Insulin Sensitizing Actions In Lipodystrophic Liver, Esra Asilmaz Jan 2004

Site And Mechanism Of Leptin's Antisteatotic And Insulin Sensitizing Actions In Lipodystrophic Liver, Esra Asilmaz

Student Theses and Dissertations

An adipocyte hormone which functions as the afferent signal in a negative feedback loop regulating energy balance, has profound effects on glucose and lipid metabolisms. Lipodystrophic humans and mice have a complete or partial absence of adipose tissue and a secondary reduction of leptin. This is associated with insulin resistance and hepatic steatosis, which are corrected by leptin administration. This thesis aimed to define the site of leptin action and understand the molecular basis of leptin's insulin sensitizing and antisteatotic effects in lipodystrophy. To determine the site of leptin action, we treated lipodystrophic aP2-nSREBP-1c mice with a low dose of …

A Novel Subfamily Of Three Star-Related Lipid Transfer Proteins That Are Differentially-Regulated And Function In Intracellular Cholesterol Metabolism, Raymond E. Soccio Jan 2004

A Novel Subfamily Of Three Star-Related Lipid Transfer Proteins That Are Differentially-Regulated And Function In Intracellular Cholesterol Metabolism, Raymond E. Soccio

Student Theses and Dissertations

This thesis describes the discovery, cloning, and initial characterization of StarD4, sterol-regulated gene encoding a StAR-related lipid transfer (START) protein, and its close homologues, StarD5 and StarD6. StarD4 was identified using cDNA microarrays, as liver StarD4 expression decreased three-fold in mice fed a high cholesterol diet. StarD4 also sterol-regulated in cultured cells, and a functional sterol regulatory element (SRE) identified in its promoter. StarD4 was preferentially activated in mouse liver by SREBP-rather than SREBP-1, supporting a role in cholesterol rather than fatty acid metabolism. X-ray crystal structure of StarD4 was solved, revealing a hydrophobic lipid binding cavity described for other …

Life Without Gpr7, The Neuropeptide W1 Receptor: Regulation Of Energy Homeostasis By Gpr7 And Its Endogenous Neuropeptide Ligands, Makoto Ishii Jan 2004

Life Without Gpr7, The Neuropeptide W1 Receptor: Regulation Of Energy Homeostasis By Gpr7 And Its Endogenous Neuropeptide Ligands, Makoto Ishii

Student Theses and Dissertations

Classic lesion experiments from the 1940s have established the hypothalamus as playing an essential role in controlling energy homeostasis. Gold-thioglucose (GTG) induces lesions in the ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus (VMH) resulting in hyperphagia and obesity. To identify genes involved in the hypothalamic regulation of energy homeostasis, we employed a screen to search for genes that were dysregulated in GTG induced obese mice. In this screen, GPR7, the endogenous G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) for the recently identified ligands neuropeptide B (NPB) and neuropeptide W (NPW), was found to be specifically down-regulated after GTG treatment. The physiological role of GPR7 was …

Molecular Basis Of Vertebrate Embryonic Migration, Paris A. Skourides Jan 2004

Molecular Basis Of Vertebrate Embryonic Migration, Paris A. Skourides

Student Theses and Dissertations

Embryology aims at understanding how a single fertilized cell develops into a complex multicellular organism. Initially the embryo is no more than a ball of cells where the three primordial layers, the ectoderm, mesoderm and the endoderm are one on top of the other. The three germ layers will go on to form all the tissues and organs of the embryo. For example, the ectoderm will give rise to epidermis and the nervous system; the mesoderm to muscles, the skeletal system, the dermis or inner layer of the skin, the circulatory, excretory, and reproductive systems; and, finally, the endoderm will …

Advertisers And Consumers In Transition, Katherine Sredl, Nataša Renko Jan 2004

Advertisers And Consumers In Transition, Katherine Sredl, Nataša Renko

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Globalization of consumption and advertising is a dominant aspect of the post-socialist economic and social transition in Central and Eastern Europe. Yet we are only beginning to understand how consumers and local advertisers make sense of this, the role of historical infl uences, and the meaning of current outcomes. Croatia is an excellent site for researching this. How local advertisers and consumers adjust to globalization, and adjust its forces to their culture, will in no small way determine Croatia’s future, socially, economically, and politically. Through a year of ethnographic fi eldwork in Croatia, the authors hope to unlock the local …

Above And Below The Water: Social/Ecological Transformation In Northwest Newfoundland, Lawrence C. Hamilton, Richard L. Haedrich, Cynthia M. Duncan Jan 2004

Above And Below The Water: Social/Ecological Transformation In Northwest Newfoundland, Lawrence C. Hamilton, Richard L. Haedrich, Cynthia M. Duncan

Sociology

Marine fisheries and fishing societies develop around the resources provided by a particular ecosystem. As they exploit these resources, fisheries transform the ecosystem, which pushes fishery and society to adapt in turn. This process is illustrated by fisheries, ecological and social data tracking dramatic changes on Newfoundland's Northern Peninsula and its adjacent marine ecosystem, the northern Gulf of St. Lawrence. There a longstanding fishery for cod and other groundfish collapsed in the 1990s, and was replaced by fisheries targeting invertebrates. The new invertebrate fisheries have different socioeconomic characteristics than the former groundfish fisheries. The shift in target species reflects deep …

Hortaliza: A Youth "Nutrition" Garden In Southwest Detroit, Kameshwari Pothukuchi Jan 2004

Hortaliza: A Youth "Nutrition" Garden In Southwest Detroit, Kameshwari Pothukuchi

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Research Publications

This paper documents a youth garden that was developed in 2000 through a university-community partnership in a low-income, predominantly Latino neighborhood in southwest Detroit. It involved four community-based organizations and several residents -- youth among them -- from the neighborhood, in garden planning, set-up, and management. Kids grew vegetables of different kinds to take home and ate healthy snacks at the garden. They learned about the importance of vegetables and fruits to healthy diets, the nutritional value of particular vegetables, and how to grow vegetables. At the end of the season, we documented increased interest among kids in eating fruits …

How Ohio V. Talty Provided For Future Bans On Procreation And The Consequences That Action Brings: Ohio V. Talty: Hiding In The Shadow Of The Supreme Court Of Wisconsin, Evelyn Holmer

Journal of Law and Health

This Note discusses the constitutionality of antireproduction restrictions as they relate to the purposes and goals of probation, in the context of the Talty, Oakley, and Tramnell decisions. This Note addresses the ramifications and implications of these restrictions in relation to the deadbeat parent crisis, and it proposes more adequate means to accomplish the competing goals of child welfare and adherence to constitutional doctrine. Section II introduces and dissects the fundamental right to procreate as it is found under two concepts: the right itself and the right to privacy. Section III discusses the purposes of probation, generally, and articulates two …

Books

In 2003, the RIT Printing Industry Center (CIAS) monograph titled Investing in Digital Color… the Bottom Line1 identified four different business models that were related to successful digital color print services enterprises. The four models reflected different levels of investment in equipment, telecommunications and networking infrastructures, and human resources. Figure 1 summarizes the four business models in terms of investment strategies and market focus. The purpose of this research is to validate those four models. The 2003 research was based on a small sample size of print services providers which did not allow us to generalize to a wider population. …

Is Corporate Insourcing Of Print On The Rise?, Patricia Sorce, Brett Daly Jan 2004

Is Corporate Insourcing Of Print On The Rise?, Patricia Sorce, Brett Daly

Books

What is the balance between the "make" and the "buy" decision for corporate document production services? In a Printing Industry Center (CIAS) report from 2003, 43% of marketing executives, often the document creators, reported that they were increasing the amount of printing in-house for collateral material. The research objective of this exploratory study is to gain insight into the document processing and printing sourcing decisions in firms. A total of 44 print buyers completer the survey. The profile of the respondents indicated that they represented a broad range of firms, from financial services to manufacturing. A majority purchased over $500,000 …
