Lessons From Juvenile Justice History In The United States, Douglas E. Abrams

Faculty Publications

Properly understood, “juvenile justice” encompasses all four primary categories of juvenile court jurisdiction - - abuse and neglect, adoption, status offenses and delinquency. I will concentrate today on delinquency - - what states have done with * children found to have committed acts that would be crimes if committed by adults.

Spotlight: Response To Violence Against Women At The University Of Missouri At Columbia, Mary M. Beck

Faculty Publications

The University of Missouri (“MU”) sits in the picturesque college town of Columbia on the largest and oldest campus of the Missouri University system. MU is a land grant institution created with funds and land appropriated by the Morrill Acts of 1862 and 1890. The University “honors [that public trust] and accepts the associated accountability” by acquiring, creating, transmitting, and preserving knowledge. “MU's primary mission in research and doctoral education . . . provides the basis for service to the people of [Missouri] via outreach programs.” Domestic violence impacts MU's land grant influenced service mission. Its organizational departments, educational units, …

Sexual Ethics Training In Seminary: Preparing Students To Manage Feelings Of Sexual Attraction, Katheryn Rhoads Meek, Mark R. Mcminn, Todd Burnett, Chris Mazzarella, Vitaliy L. Voytenko Jan 2004

Sexual Ethics Training In Seminary: Preparing Students To Manage Feelings Of Sexual Attraction, Katheryn Rhoads Meek, Mark R. Mcminn, Todd Burnett, Chris Mazzarella, Vitaliy L. Voytenko

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Sexual boundary violations by clergy have received heightened media attention in recent years with far reaching implications for the long-term well-being of the Church as an institution. While much has been written about the causes and implications of sexual misconduct by clergy, very little research has addressed preventative efforts. Prevention begins in graduate school or seminary. How do seminary alumni perceive the quality of their training in the areas of understanding and maintaining sexual health as well as in managing feelings of sexual attraction in professional contexts? In this survey, 585 alumni from 5 evangelical seminaries answered questions related to …

Research Training In Explicitly Christian Doctoral Programs, Peter C. Hill, Mark R. Mcminn Jan 2004

Research Training In Explicitly Christian Doctoral Programs, Peter C. Hill, Mark R. Mcminn

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

The importance of research training at explicitly Christian doctoral programs is suggested on the basis of four reasons: the need to hold science and practice together, the need for skills to evaluate interventions, the need to serve a society with a growing interest in religion and spirituality, and the need to assess the effectiveness of explicitly Christian doctoral programs. A discussion of these issues serves as an introduction to the rest of this special issue that focuses on research training at seven explicitly Christian programs.

The Moo As An Arcade: Minimalism And Interpretive Literary Games, Steven E. Jones, Neil Fraistat Jan 2004

The Moo As An Arcade: Minimalism And Interpretive Literary Games, Steven E. Jones, Neil Fraistat

English Faculty Publications

Classic arcade videogames are engaging and immersive for counter-intuitive reasons, precisely because they are schematic and iconic, because they require a collaborative act of imagination on the part of the player, and because playing them is about being part of a shared arcade-based culture. As we have found in our own experiments in the Romantic Circles MOO, graphic minimalism forces us to maintain gameplay in a wider contextual setting. It’s not just retro fashion that gives these games their continued appeal; it’s that we are called on to make something of what is only sketchily suggested, and optimally we do …

When Congress Gives You Lemons: Alternatives To Legal Services Corporation Funding In The Quest To Provide Access To Justice, David Pai Jan 2004

When Congress Gives You Lemons: Alternatives To Legal Services Corporation Funding In The Quest To Provide Access To Justice, David Pai

UC Law Journal of Race and Economic Justice

Since 1996, Congress has imposed substantial restrictions on lawyers funded by the Legal Services Corporation (LSC). These restrictions include banning LSC-funded attorneys from filing class action lawsuits, prohibiting them from claiming any statutory right to attorneys' fees, and barring them from bringing any challenges to an agency's rule-making authority. Congress has also slashed the LSC budget by a third. However, alternative funding strategies do exist for states and public interest firms seeking to fill gaps gouged by the LSC restrictions. By focusing on these piecemeal changes in fundraising, legal aid attorneys inevitably empower themselves to move away from the inefficiencies …

Validation Of A Food Frequency Questionnaire To Assess Macro And Micro-Nutrient Intake Among South Asians In The United Kingdom, Leena Sevak, Punam Mangtani, Valerie Mccormack, Dee Bhakta, Tashmin Khamis, Isabel Dos Santos Silva Jan 2004

Validation Of A Food Frequency Questionnaire To Assess Macro And Micro-Nutrient Intake Among South Asians In The United Kingdom, Leena Sevak, Punam Mangtani, Valerie Mccormack, Dee Bhakta, Tashmin Khamis, Isabel Dos Santos Silva

Faculty of Health Sciences, East Africa

Background: The South Asian population is one of the largest minority ethnic groups in the United Kingdom (UK), forming 2.7% of the UK population. Risk of diseases such as CHD, NIDDM is high in South Asians and risk of cancer low in this population compared both to the native UK population and other migrant groups. It is useful to investigate the experience of disease and dietary exposures for aetiological clues in South Asians. The FFQ was designed for a population-based case-control study of diet and breast cancer.

Aims: To validate a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) to assess macro- and micronutrient …

Race To The Top Of The Corporate Ladder: What Minorities Do When They Get There, Devon W. Carbado, Mitu Gulati

Faculty Articles

Racing to the top of the corporate hierarchy is difficult, no matter how qualified or capable the candidate. Producing more widgets than one's competitors is not enough. Negotiating the political landscape of the institution is also required. More specifically, individual corporate officers have to be appeased, powerful interest groups have to be co-opted and made allies, and competitors have to be undermined or eliminated. The more bureaucratic the organization and the more opaque the promotion process, the more important this institutional game to climbing the corporate ladder. This Article identifies the kind of racial minorities or racial types who are …

Ending Social Work's Grudge Match: Problems Versus Strengths, J. Curtis Mcmillen, Lisa A. Morris Phd, Michael Sherraden Jan 2004

Ending Social Work's Grudge Match: Problems Versus Strengths, J. Curtis Mcmillen, Lisa A. Morris Phd, Michael Sherraden

Faculty Publications

Some in social work have called for a paradigm shift away from a focus on problems to a focus on strengths, empowerment, and capacity building. This call sets up an unnatural dichotomy, asking social workers to identify with one side or another. In this article, we review social work history to argue that the best social work practice has always maintained a dual focus on both problems and capacity building. Throughout our history, those who championed a problem-oriented practice also emphasized strengths and growing client capacity, and today's strength-based, capacity-oriented practitioners typically advocate for the solving of consumer's presenting problems.
