Needs Assessment, Creation, And Utilization Of The Coastal Geotoolbox, Arthur Rodriguez Jan 2004

Needs Assessment, Creation, And Utilization Of The Coastal Geotoolbox, Arthur Rodriguez

Open Access Master's Theses

Barrier islands are extremely dynamic landforms, and one of the most dynamic aspects of a barrier island is the beach. In an effort to document change in these environments, the National Park Service (NPS) Inventory & Monitoring Program Northeast Coast & Barrier Network (NCBN) have established a set of coastal geomorphology protocols to collect ecological indicator datasets. Two of the most important and readily available sources of data within these protocols are horizontal shoreline locations collected by global positioning systems (GPS), and general beach topography collected by lidar topographic surveys. There are several methods used to quantify the amount of …

G04-1537 Wind Erosion And Its Control, Drew J. Lyon, John A. Smith Jan 2004

G04-1537 Wind Erosion And Its Control, Drew J. Lyon, John A. Smith

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide discusses how wind erosion occurs and presents methods for reducing wind erosion on land devoted to crop production. Wind erosion is widespread on agricultural land in the Great Plains, particularly in the semi-arid regions. Wind erosion physically removes the most fertile part of the soil (organic matter, clay, and silt) and lowers soil productivity. This loss in productivity increases the costs of producing crops. Blowing soil can reduce seedling survival and growth, depress crop yields, and increase the susceptibility of plants to certain types of stress, including diseases.

Nf04-597 Biosecurity And The Poultry Flock, Dan Mcguire, Sheila Scheideler Jan 2004

Nf04-597 Biosecurity And The Poultry Flock, Dan Mcguire, Sheila Scheideler

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

What is Biosecurity? Biosecurity is a modern term created out of a need to protect, in our case poultry, from an intentional or unintentional threat from a biological agent. In our everyday management, biosecurity is an endless endeavor to keep viral disease agents and/or the spread of such disease agents at bay. We have learned from our own personal welfare that by keeping our environment clean, i.e., "cleanliness is next to godliness" and by reducing contact with infected people or animals, i.e., "being a good neighbor," we can reduce our chance of catching or spreading disease. This NebGuide discusses what …

Update On Omega-3 Fatty Acids And Litter Size In Swine, Duane Reese Jan 2004

Update On Omega-3 Fatty Acids And Litter Size In Swine, Duane Reese

Nebraska Swine Reports

A literature review was conducted to examine the role that dietary omega- 3 fatty acids may have in improving litter size in swine. Omega-3 fatty acids are not normally present to any great extent in practical swine diets, but they are increasingly believed to be important in human and pet health. In all but one of the studies reviewed the number of pigs born alive improved (0.2 to 0.7 pigs litter) when sows were provided diets that contained more omega-3 fatty acids. In all the studies that reported litter size at weaning, positive responses were observed (0.3 to 1.3 pigs/litter) …

Dietary Antimicrobials In A Wean-To-Finish Facility, Mike Brumm Jan 2004

Dietary Antimicrobials In A Wean-To-Finish Facility, Mike Brumm

Nebraska Swine Reports

The routine use of growth-promoting antimicrobial feed additives is under increasing pressure worldwide. In response to this pressure, it is important that producers and their advisors understand under what circumstances these additives are likely to be effective or ineffective, allowing for improved decisions regarding their use. An experiment was conducted to examine the routine use of antimicrobial feed additives in a wean-to-finish facility. The weaned pigs used in this experiment were purchased from a source where grow-finish pigs were positive for PRRSV, circovirus-2 and Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae and had a previous history of Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae (APP) related problems. Experimental treatments were …

The Rise And Fall Of The U.N. Charter's Use Of Force Rules, Michael J. Glennon Jan 2004

The Rise And Fall Of The U.N. Charter's Use Of Force Rules, Michael J. Glennon

UC Law SF International Law Review

American policy makers and international lawyers sit in a parallel universe. Policy makers determine whether to use force in any given situation by examining the costs and benefits. International lawyers engage in legal analysis, which rarely plays a role in the policy makers' decisions. This paper examines three different elements of American foreign policy: (1) the American foreign policy objectives, (2) the means by which those objectives are pursued, and (3) the way in which the United States should deal with a world in which the U.N. collective security system has collapsed.

Can't We Enlarge The Blanket And The Bed - A Comparative Analysis Of Positive/Affirmative Action In The European Court Of Justice And The United States Supreme Court, Thomas Trelogan, Steve Mazurana, Paul Hodapp Jan 2004

Can't We Enlarge The Blanket And The Bed - A Comparative Analysis Of Positive/Affirmative Action In The European Court Of Justice And The United States Supreme Court, Thomas Trelogan, Steve Mazurana, Paul Hodapp

UC Law SF International Law Review

In a time when race-based affirmative action is the focal discrimination issue in the United States, the subject of gender equality runs the risk of stagnation. The authors return the attention to sex-based affirmative action by examining the arguments for and against European positive action plans, and several of the resulting European Court of Justice cases. The authors conclude with a comparison to similar gender-based discrimination laws in the United States, and a discussion of the similarities and differences of the two systems.

Descent Into Authoritarianism: Barriers To Constitutional Rule In Belarus, Eric R. Reed Jan 2004

Descent Into Authoritarianism: Barriers To Constitutional Rule In Belarus, Eric R. Reed

UC Law SF International Law Review

The switch from authoritarianism to constitutional democracy has found varying levels of success in the former Soviet republics. Belarus, under President and former collective farm manager Alexander Lukashenka, has reverted from a promising democracy back to an authoritarian regime. This note begins with the historical underpinnings of Belarus' democratic collapse, and then examines the political, social, and judicial factors that contributed. The author concludes with a discussion of how Belarus might regain its democratic footing.

A Toothless Tiger: President Uribe's Proposed Amnesty Bill, Sarah R. Sandford-Smith Jan 2004

A Toothless Tiger: President Uribe's Proposed Amnesty Bill, Sarah R. Sandford-Smith

UC Law SF International Law Review

On August 21, 2003, Colombian President Alvaro Uribe presented a bill that would permit certain paramilitary and guerilla leaders to avoid prison for gross human rights violations. These individuals would merely have to pay a fee - as reparations to the victims and their families. This note begins by discussing the history behind the bill, and then looks at two possible alternatives: a United Nations truth commission and jurisdiction by the International Criminal Court. The author concludes by suggesting that a truth commission would be the best solution.

Other Publications in Wildlife Management

Deer (Odocoileus spp.) can cause substantial damage to agricultural crops, resulting in economic loses for producers. We developed a deer activated bio acoustic frightening device to reduce white-tailed deer (0. virginianus) damage in agricultural fields. The device consisted of an infrared detection system that activated an audio component which broadcast recorded distress and alarm calls of deer. We tested the device against unprotected controls in cornfields during the silking-tasseling stage of growth in July 2001. the device was not effective in reducing damage: track-count indices (F1,4=0.02, P=0.892), corn yield (F1,9=1.27, P=O.289), and estimated damage levels (F1,10=0.87, P=0.374) …

Propane Exploders And Electronic Guards Were Ineffective At Reducing Deer Damage In Cornfields, Jason M. Gilsdorf, Scott E. Hygnstrom, Kurt C. Vercauteren, Erin E. Blankenship, Richard M. Engeman

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) cause millions of dollars of damage to agricultural crops annually. We tested the effectiveness of propane exploders and Electronic Guards (Pocatello Supply Depot, Pocatello, Id.) for reducing deer damage in cornfields during the silking–tasseling stage of growth. Track-count indices (F2,7=0.70, P=0.532), corn yields (F2,6=0.14, P=0.873), and estimated damage levels (F2,12=1.45 P=0.272) did not differ between experimental and control fields. The size (F2,11=0.08, P=0.924), location (F2,9=0.30, P=0.750), and percent overlap (F2,9=0.46, P=0.644) of use-areas of radiomarked female deer in the vicinity of experimental fields did not differ among before, during, and after 18-day treatment periods. In a …
