Inclusion Versus Institutionalization: Japan’S Educational Challenge, Leonardo P. Jimenez, Toshiro Ochiai Ph.D. Jan 2004

Inclusion Versus Institutionalization: Japan’S Educational Challenge, Leonardo P. Jimenez, Toshiro Ochiai Ph.D.

Electronic Journal for Inclusive Education

Japan has been undergoing educational reforms as social changes continually spur especially with the advent of globalization. With special needs children in its populace, the country lays down its own educational paradigm. This aims to discuss the two scenarios in the Japanese educational system, the inclusion and the institutionalization, which serve as answers to the schooling dilemma of children with disabilities. Inclusion is a confusing issue since it is not explicitly stated in the nation’s public education rulings but in practice, there is inclusion. On the other hand, institutionalization is aptly considered concrete as it is seen in segregated environment …

Illusion Or Reality? Policy And Process In South African Education, Loshini Naidoo Ph.D. Jan 2004

Illusion Or Reality? Policy And Process In South African Education, Loshini Naidoo Ph.D.

Electronic Journal for Inclusive Education

This paper examines the current African National Congress education policy in South Africa using a methodological tool derived from critical theory (Jay, 1973; Wellmer, 1971; O’Neill, 1977; Held, 1980; Guess, 1981; Roderick, 1986; Kellner, 1989; McCarthy, 1978, 1991) since it has an emancipatory rather than a manipulative interest in critical inquiry. While much has been written on South African educational policy after the African National Congress victory in 1994, (African National Congress, 1994a; African National Congress, 1994b; Asmal and James, 2001; Carrim, 1998; Chisholm and Fine, 1994; Council on Higher Education, 2000a, 2000b; Department of Education, 1997; Maharaj, 1999; National …

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

It is not known how plants synthesize the p-aminobenzoate (PABA) moiety of folates. In Escherichia coli, PABA is made from chorismate in two steps. First, the PabA and PabB proteins interact to catalyze transfer of the amide nitrogen of glutamine to chorismate, forming 4-amino-4-deoxychorismate (ADC). The PabC protein then mediates elimination of pyruvate and aromatization to give PABA. Fungi, actinomycetes, and Plasmodium spp. also synthesize PABA but have proteins comprising fused domains homologous to PabA and PabB. These bipartite proteins are commonly called ‘‘PABA synthases,’’ although it is unclear whether they produce PABA or ADC. Genomic approaches identified …

Drought, Donald A. Wilhite Jan 2004

Drought, Donald A. Wilhite

National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications

Drought is a normal feature of the climate for virtually all portions of the United States and some portions of Canada, but it is one of the defining characteristics of the North American Great Plains. Early maps referred to this region as the Great American Desert, a belief attributed to the explorations of Zebulon Pike across the Southern Plains in 1806 and of Stephen Long across the Central Plains in 1819–20. The drought of the 1890s and, in particular, the Dust Bowl years of the 1930s define the region’s climatic past. More recently, droughts have occurred at regular intervals, affecting, …

An Operational Agricultural Drought Risk Assessment Model For Nebraska, Usa, Hong Wu, Donald A. Wilhite Jan 2004

An Operational Agricultural Drought Risk Assessment Model For Nebraska, Usa, Hong Wu, Donald A. Wilhite

National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications

Drought is a common occurrence in Nebraska and agriculture is the primary economic sector affected. Because of repeated and widespread severe drought impacts, more emphasis on drought risk management is warranted. This study develops an agricultural drought risk assessment model using multivariate techniques. The model is specific to corn and soybeans and is able to assess real-time agricultural drought risk associated with crop yield losses at critical phenological stages prior to and during the growing season. The assessment results are presented in a Geographic Information System to provide a better visualization. This model provides information in a timely manner about …

Microfinance And Third World Development: A Critical Analysis, Elahi Khandakar, Constantine P. Danopoulos Jan 2004

Microfinance And Third World Development: A Critical Analysis, Elahi Khandakar, Constantine P. Danopoulos

Faculty Publications

Microfinance is emerging as an integral part of the new development paradigm, described by the phrase "participation and development. "Although the idea has become quite popular among donor agencies, development practitioners, and academicians, theoretical premises on which this idea is founded seem entirely unexamined. Accordingly, this article investigates the academic merits, as well as potential consequences, of this popular poverty alleviating model from the supply-side perspective and asks a provocative question: Do the microfinance ventures have features which suggest that the establishment of this new finance industry in the Third World countries might further complicate their pervasive poverty problems? The …

Company Characteristics And Occupational Health And Safety Disclosures: A Quantitative Review Of Australian Annual Reports, Matthew V. Tilling Jan 2004

Company Characteristics And Occupational Health And Safety Disclosures: A Quantitative Review Of Australian Annual Reports, Matthew V. Tilling

Business Conference Papers

This paper uses binary logistic regression to develop two models of firms’ Occupational Health and Safety disclosures, one based on disclosure / non-disclosure, the other based on above / below the median levels of disclosure. Industry and auditor are found to be important components of both models, whilst operating revenue contributes to the former and company age to the latter. These findings support to some extent previous studies into Corporate Social and Environmental Disclosure, but also identify new factors that need to be further investigated. The paper contributes to our current understanding of Corporate Social Disclosure through its focus on …

Communication At The Edge: Voluntary Social And Environmental Reporting In The Annual Report Of A Legitimacy Threatened Corporation, Matthew V. Tilling Jan 2004

Communication At The Edge: Voluntary Social And Environmental Reporting In The Annual Report Of A Legitimacy Threatened Corporation, Matthew V. Tilling

Business Conference Papers

This paper examines the voluntary social and environmental disclosures made in the annual reports of Rothmans Ltd between the years of 1955 and 1999. The first part of the paper focuses on defining legitimacy theory as it has been used in accounting research and discusses the potential of a resource based approach to testing the theory. The study then considers legitimacy theory in light of the disclosures made by Rothmans. An initial qualitative analysis certainly provides examples of expected attempts to legitimatize the corporation given the threat posed by the smoking and health debate. Initial quantitative findings contradict those expected …

Indigenous Children’S Literature In Transformation, Angeline O'Neill Jan 2004

Indigenous Children’S Literature In Transformation, Angeline O'Neill

Arts Conference Papers

Children’s Literature makes a significant contribution to the diverse and dynamic cultural geographies which constitute contemporary Western society. Indigenous children’s literature, in particular, reflects both the way a society likes to see itself and the way it actually is. Not surprisingly, these two visions rarely coincide, although they are constantly under revision in response to the pressures of twenty-first century life. This is evident when a comparative approach is taken to Indigenous children’s literature in such countries as Australia and Canada, whose treatment of their Indigenous peoples is both strikingly similar and remarkably different. For example, movement from the early …

Changes In Gdnf Protein Content Of Skeletal Muscle Following Involuntary Exercise Are Long Lived, Kyle R. Kinnell, Monica J. Czarnopys, John Spitsbergen Jan 2004

Changes In Gdnf Protein Content Of Skeletal Muscle Following Involuntary Exercise Are Long Lived, Kyle R. Kinnell, Monica J. Czarnopys, John Spitsbergen

Biological Sciences Faculty and Graduate Student Research

Glial-cell line derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) is a neurotrophic factor produced by skeletal muscle. GDNF has been shown to be potent survival factor for motor neurons. We have previously shown that GDNF content in skeletal muscle is altered following exercise and GDNF levels 24 hours after the last bout of exercise are significantly different than those measured immediately after exercise. We sought to determine how long after exercise do GDNF protein levels remain altered. We removed extensor digitorum longus (EDL) and Soleus (SOL), 24 hr, 72 hr and 1 week following the last bout of involuntary exercise. Muscles were processed …

The Ehealth Behavior Management Model: A Stage-Based Approach To Behavior Change And Management, Robert J. Bensley, Nelda Mercer, John J. Brusk, Ric Underhile, Jason Rivas, Judith Anderson, Deanne Kelleher, Melissa Lupella, André C. De Jager

Human Performance and Health Education Faculty Research

Although the Internet has become an important avenue for disseminating health information, theory-driven strategies for aiding individuals in changing or managing health behaviors are lacking. The eHealth Behavior Management Model combines the Transtheoretical Model, the behavioral intent aspect of the Theory of Planned Behavior, and persuasive communication to assist individuals in negotiating the Web toward stage-specific information. It is here — at the point of stage-specific information — that behavioral intent in moving toward more active stages of change occurs.

The eHealth Behavior Management Model is applied in three demonstration projects that focus on behavior management issues: parent-child nutrition education …
