Neurologically Plausible Distinctions In Cognition Relevant To Drug Use Etiology And Prevention, Alan W. Stacy, Susan L. Ames, Barbara J. Knowlton Jan 2004

Neurologically Plausible Distinctions In Cognition Relevant To Drug Use Etiology And Prevention, Alan W. Stacy, Susan L. Ames, Barbara J. Knowlton

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

This article outlines several distinctions in cognition and related topics in emotion that receive support from work in cognitive neuroscience and have important implications for prevention: implicit cognition, working memory, nonverbal memory, and neurobiological systems of habit. These distinctions have not been widely acknowledged or applied in drug use prevention research, despite their neural plausibility and the availability of methods to make this link. The authors briefly review the basis for the distinctions and indicate general implications and assessment possibilities for prevention researchers conducting large-scale field trials. Subsequently, the article outlines a connectionist framework for specific applications in prevention interventions. …

A Transdisciplinary Focus On Drug Abuse Prevention: An Introduction, Steve Sussman, Alan W. Stacy, C. Anderson Johnson, Mary Ann Pentz, Elizabeth Robertson

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

This article introduces the scope of the Special Issue. A variety of scientific disciplines are brought together to establish theoretical integration of the arenas of drug use, misuse, “abuse,” and drug misuse prevention. Transdisciplinary scientific collaboration (TDSC) is utilized as a process of integration. Introductory comments regarding the strengths and limitations of TDSC are presented. Then, the relevance of genetics to substance misuse and substance misuse prevention is presented. Next, the relevance of cognition for prevention is discussed. Specifically, neurologically plausible distinctions in cognition and implicit cognition and their relevance for prevention are discussed. At a relatively molar social-level of …

Teaching For Change: The Leadership In Environmental Education Partnership, Paul Faulstich Jan 2004

Teaching For Change: The Leadership In Environmental Education Partnership, Paul Faulstich

Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research

Humans are transforming earth's landscape from a natural matrix with pockets of civilization to just the opposite. Most of us realize that this pattern is not sustainable. I live and work in Claremont, California, a charming college town in the midst of suburban sprawl. The town has a central village of terminally tasteful, overpriced bungalows nestled in the shade of tall, largely exotic trees. Indeed, most of the landscape of this "city of trees and Ph.D.s" has been imported; only a remnant parcel of coastal sage scrub that the Claremont Colleges have reluctantly preserved remains.

The Effectiveness Of An Interactive Multimedia Learning Tool On Nursing Students' Math Knowledge And Self-Efficacy, Margaret M. Hansen Edd, Msn, Rn Jan 2004

The Effectiveness Of An Interactive Multimedia Learning Tool On Nursing Students' Math Knowledge And Self-Efficacy, Margaret M. Hansen Edd, Msn, Rn

Nursing and Health Professions Faculty Research and Publications

The use of online learning tutorials to provide instruction in schools of nursing is growing in popularity; however, the outcomes associated with this method of instruction are not well documented. The focus of this experimental study, conducted at 2 universities in northern California, was to determine the effectiveness of an online interactive multimedia-learning tool versus text only, text and images, and multimedia learning explanations on math achievement, math self-efficacy, and student satisfaction. Compared to students in the control groups, students in the interactive multimedia group demonstrated equal posttest and retest knowledge of math; their math self-efficacy scores were also the …
