The New Negro Arts And Letters Movement Among Black University Students In The Midwest, 1914-1940, Richard M. Breaux Jan 2004

The New Negro Arts And Letters Movement Among Black University Students In The Midwest, 1914-1940, Richard M. Breaux

Black Studies Faculty Publications

The 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s were an exciting time for black artists and writers in the United States. Much of the historical literature highlights the so-called Harlem Renaissance or its successor, the Black Chicago Renaissance. Few studies, however, document the influence of these artistic movements outside major urban cities such as New York, Chicago, or Washington, DC. In his 1988 essay on black education, historian Ronald Butchart argued that the educational effects of black social movements such as the Harlem Renaissance on black schooling are unclear and underexplored. This article explores the influence of the New Negro arts and letters …

Using Wildlife As Receptor Species: A Landscape, Karen F. Gaines, Dwayne E. Porter, Susan A. Dyer, Gary R. Wein, John E. Pinder Iii, I. Lehr Brisbin Jr.

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

To assist risk assessors at the Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site (SRS), a Geographic Information System (GIS) application was developed to provide relevant information about specific receptor species of resident wildlife that can be used for ecological risk assessment. Information was obtained from an extensive literature review of publications and reports on vertebrate- and contaminant- related research since 1954 and linked to a GIS. Although this GIS is a useful tool for risk assessors because the data quality is high, it does not describe the species’ site-wide spatial distribution or life history, which may be crucial when developing a …

Assessing The Accuracy Of National Land Cover Dataset Area Estimates At Multiple Spatial Extents, Jeffrey W. Hollister, M. Liliana Gonzalez, John F. Paul, Pete V. August, Jane L. Copeland Jan 2004

Assessing The Accuracy Of National Land Cover Dataset Area Estimates At Multiple Spatial Extents, Jeffrey W. Hollister, M. Liliana Gonzalez, John F. Paul, Pete V. August, Jane L. Copeland

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

Site-specific accuracy assessments evaluate fine-scale accuracy of land-use/land-cover (LULC) datasets but provide little insight into accuracy of area estimates of LULC classes derived from sampling units of varying size. Additionally, accuracy of landscape structure metrics calculated from area estimates cannot be determined solely from site-specific assessments. We used LULC data from Rhode Island and Massachusetts as reference to determine the accuracy of area measurements from the National Land Cover Dataset (NLCD) within spatial units ranging from 0.1 to 200 km2. When regressed on reference area, NLCD area of developed land, agriculture, forest, and water had positive linear relationships …

Retrieving Marx For The Human Rights Project, Brad R. Roth Jan 2004

Retrieving Marx For The Human Rights Project, Brad R. Roth

Law Faculty Research Publications

Marxian thought retains its relevance in the current period, not as a comprehensive replacement for liberal human rights theories, but as a source of critique that challenges those theories on the basis of the very values of human freedom and dignity that they espouse. The Marxian approach entails no general rejection of human-rights-oriented constraint, procedural or substantive, on efforts to achieve social change, but rather serves the human rights project by demonstrting how contradictory class interests manifest themselves as contradictions within the effort to apply liberal principles in a class-divided society.

The Lives Of Animals, The Lives Of Prisoners And The Revelations Of Abu Ghraib, Charles Hendrickson Brower Ii Jan 2004

The Lives Of Animals, The Lives Of Prisoners And The Revelations Of Abu Ghraib, Charles Hendrickson Brower Ii

Law Faculty Research Publications

In this Article, Professor Brower suggests that the images depicting inhuman treatment of detainees at the Abu Ghraib prison contain timely lessons about the function and the importance of legal personality. To illustrate this thesis, the Author first identifies animals as a population condemned to an existence bereft of the protections that accompany legal personality. Next, the Author describes the chilling similarities between the treatment of animals and the treatment of prisoners in Iraq and in the so-called "Global War on Terror." Finally, the Author discusses three potential lessons for a nation widely perceived to have retreated from its commitment …

Ec04-469 When Words Are Used As Weapons: The Signs Of Verbal Abuse (Part 2 Of A Four Part Series), Kathy Bosch

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Verbal abuse finally is being recognized as a form of domestic violence and as the behavior that usually precedes physical violence. There has been little support for individuals who are verbally abused because it's not as readily visible as a black eye or bruise. However, many individuals, particularly women, suffer with verbal assaults from their partners.

Interferon Type I Response In Porcine Reproductive And Respiratory Syndrome Virus-Infected U.S. Meat Animal Research Center-145 Cells, L. C. Miller, W. W. Laegried, J. L. Bono, C. G. Chitko-Mckown, J. M. Fox

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

Infection by porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) results in a weak induction of the innate immune response. There are many genes that collectively comprise this response and the extent to which each gene responds to PRRSV infection is unclear and warrants further investigation. To this end, we have utilized real-time PCR using SYBR Green I dye-based detection to quantify transcript abundance of the type I interferons (IFN-α and -β) and IFN-β transcriptional enhanceasome genes. In U.S. Meat Animal Research Center-145 cells, both IFN- α and -β transcript abundance were unaffected by PRRSV infection. However, stimulation of U.S. Meat …

Beta-2-Microglobulin Haplotypes In U.S. Beef Cattle And Association With Failure Of Passive Transfer In Newborn Calves, Michael L. Clawson, Michael P. Heaton, Carol G. Chitko-Mckown, James M. Fox, Timothy P. L. Smith, Warren M. Snelling, John W. Keele, William W. Laegreid

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

Failure of passive transfer (FPT) is a condition in which neonates do not acquire protective serum levels of maternal antibodies. A principal component of antibody transport is the neonatal receptor for the Fc portion of immunoglobulin, a heterodimer of a MHC-1 alpha-chain homolog (FCGRT) and beta- 2-microglobulin (B2M). Previously, two FCGRT haplotypes were associated with differences in immunoglobulin G (IgG) passive transfer in cattle (Laegreid et al. (2002) Mamm Genome 13, 704–710). The present study had two objectives: first, to characterize the B2M haplotype structure in a diverse group of U.S. beef cattle, and second, to evaluate those haplotypes for …

A Preferred Vision For Administering High Schools : A Reflective Essay, Jason A. Knittel

Graduate Research Papers

If a person wants to succeed on becoming a principal, a leader, that person has to understand what people want and need. A principal needs to learn how to listen and talk with people. He also needs to understand different cultures, because not everyone is the same. There is an important relationship between the law and protection of the students as well as the staff.

A principal needs to have a sense of humor. Laugh with the students and the staff. Others will understand him as a human. He needs to be strong. People like to mock policies or complain …

Chk2 Kinase Expression Is Down-Regulated Due To Promoter Methylation In Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer, Peilin Zhang, Jie Wang, Weiyi Gao, Bao-Zhu Yuan, John Rogers, Eddie Reed Jan 2004

Chk2 Kinase Expression Is Down-Regulated Due To Promoter Methylation In Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer, Peilin Zhang, Jie Wang, Weiyi Gao, Bao-Zhu Yuan, John Rogers, Eddie Reed

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Background

CHK2 kinase is a tumor suppressor that plays important role in DNA damage signaling, cell cycle regulation and DNA damage induced apoptosis. CHK2 kinase expression was known to be ubiquitous in mammalian cells. CHK2-/- cells were remarkably resistant to DNA damage induced apoptosis, mimicking the clinical behavior of non-small cell lung cancer to conventional chemo and radiation therapy.

Result

We reported that the CHK2 expression is diminished or absent in both non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cell lines and clinical lung cancer tumor specimens. The absent CHK2 expression in NSCLC was due to hypermethylation of the CHK2 gene promoter, …

Fact Books

I am proud to introduce the thirteenth annual Southwestern Oklahoma State University Fact Book. The reader may note that several of the pages have been changed because of the recent reorganization of the academic colleges. The Fact Book provides a ready source of information to answer frequently asked questions about the University and its operations. Unless otherwise noted, the information in this Fact Book came from computer-generated reports that are printed following the tenth class day of each fall semester. Because of student fluctuations during the semester, numbers will not match other published enrollment numbers that may be based on …
