Nietzsche’S Aphoristic Turn, Steven Michels Jan 2004

Nietzsche’S Aphoristic Turn, Steven Michels

Political Science & Global Affairs Faculty Publications

Nietzsche’s use of the aphorism has most often been taken as evidence of his esotericism. Nietzsche was less than clear in his writings, it is claimed, because he did not want his true teaching to be available to just anyone. This article contends the opposite—that is, that Nietzsche wrote aphoristically for the very purpose of being read, and understood, by the widest possible audience. Moreover, this change in style had a marked impact on the nature of his philosophy. Unburdened by conventional methods, Nietzsche’s critique of modernity became more exact and his own positive philosophy became more radical.

Chevron Deference And Agency Self-Interest, Timothy K. Armstrong Jan 2004

Chevron Deference And Agency Self-Interest, Timothy K. Armstrong

Faculty Articles and Other Publications

Judicial review of a federal administrative agency's statutory or regulatory interpretation ordinarily proceeds under the highly deferential framework announced in the landmark case of Chevron U.S.A., Inc. v. Natural Resources Defense Council, 467 U.S. 837 (1984). Withholding an independent judicial interpretation of a statute or regulation in deference to an agency's views, however, poses unique problems when the agency has a self-interested stake in its interpretation - as, for example, when the agency's interpretation affects its regulatory jurisdiction or yields a financial benefit to the agency. A review of several cases in which courts have deferred, or refused to defer, …

Psychological Implications Of Informed Decisions In Prenatal Genetic Screening, Heather Rowe, Jane Fisher, Julie A. Quinlivan Jan 2004

Psychological Implications Of Informed Decisions In Prenatal Genetic Screening, Heather Rowe, Jane Fisher, Julie A. Quinlivan

Medical Conference Papers

Prenatal genetic screening for Down Syndrome through second trimester maternal serum screening is becoming part of routine care in Australia. Public heath policy emphasises the need for decisions to participate in screening programs to be informed. There is little evidence regarding the influence of emotional factors such as anxiety on women’s capacity to comprehend complex information required to exercise informed choice. This may be especially pertinent for younger women who may have no reason to regard themselves as at risk of having a baby with Down Syndrome. Furthermore such decision making occurs in the context of growing attachment to the …

A Framework For Creating A Facetted Classification For Genres: Addressing Issues Of Multidimensionality, Kevin Crowston, Barbara H. Kwasnik Jan 2004

A Framework For Creating A Facetted Classification For Genres: Addressing Issues Of Multidimensionality, Kevin Crowston, Barbara H. Kwasnik

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

People recognize and use document genres as a way of identifying useful information and of participating in mutually understood communicative acts. Crowston and Kwasnik [1] discuss the possibility of improving information access in large digital collections through the identification and use of document genre metadata. They draw on the definition of genre proposed by Orlikowski and Yates [3], who describe genre as "a distinctive type of communicative action, characterized by a socially recognized communicative purpose and common aspects of form" (p. 543). Scholars in fields such as rhetoric and library science have attempted to describe and systematize the notion of …

Organizational Cultures Of Libraries As A Strategic Resource, Michelle L. Kaarst-Brown, Scott Nicholson, Gisela M. Von Dran, Jeffrey M. Stanton Jan 2004

Organizational Cultures Of Libraries As A Strategic Resource, Michelle L. Kaarst-Brown, Scott Nicholson, Gisela M. Von Dran, Jeffrey M. Stanton

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

Theorists have suggested that organizational culture is a strategic resource that has value in ensuring the continuing existence and success of organizations (Michalisin, Smith, & Kline, 1997; Barney, 1986, 1991; Hult, Ketchen, & Nichols, 2002; Gordon, 1985). This assertion is supported by various studies that have linked organizational culture to broad strategic outcomes such as an organization’s ability to manage knowledge (Davenport, Long, & Beers, 1998; Storck & Hill, 2000), innovation capability (Hauser, 1998), and strategic management of information technology (Kaarst-Brown & Robey, 1999; Reich & Benbasat, 2000; Schein, 1985). Based on this research, we suggest that there are characteristics …

One method of reducing obesity is physical exercise, for example walking. If people are not walking, is there something that can be done to make Salinas a more walkable community.

Increasing Fort Ord Groundwater Supply By Use Of Recharge Basins, Emily Rose Roth Jan 2004

Increasing Fort Ord Groundwater Supply By Use Of Recharge Basins, Emily Rose Roth

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Currently there is a shortage of water in Monterey County. Many solutions for these problems are being discussed, especially the prospect of a desalination plant in Moss Landing (MPWMD, 2004). One solution that is being widely used around the world, but not locally, is rainwater harvesting. Rainwater harvesting is the capture of rainwater from roofs and roads (Texas Guide to Rainwater Harvesting, 2004). Once captured, the water can then be stored in cisterns or allowed to recharge the groundwater for future use (Centre for Science and Education, 2004). To calculate the amount of water that can be captured, the catchment …

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

Ecological theory and basic assumptions for the promotion of effective mothering among low-income and working-poor women are applied in relation to a particularly vulnerable population: street-level prostitution-involved women. Qualitative data from 38 street-level prostituted women shows barriers to effective mothering at the individual, community and societal levels. Suggestions for enhancing the lives and long-term well-being of prostituted women with children are included.

Factors Influencing Support For A National Animal Identification System For Cattle In The United States, Deevon Bailey, Jeremy Slade Jan 2004

Factors Influencing Support For A National Animal Identification System For Cattle In The United States, Deevon Bailey, Jeremy Slade

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

A survey of state veterinarians and leaders of state cattle producer associations was conducted in January 2004 to identify the determinants of support for animal ill programs in the United States. The results indicate strong support for implementing some form of animal ill program, but that only about 40% of cattle association leaders supported a specific plan called the USAIP. The results suggest that familiarity with the USAIP, a perception that producers will share net benefits equally with other downstream firms, and whether or not a respondent was from a state requiring cattle to be branded were significantly related to …
