Biology And Biological Control Of Purple Loosestrife, Linda M. Wilson, Mark Schwarzlaender, Bernd Blossey, Carol Bell Randall
United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Purple loosestrife, Lythrum salicaria, is a member of the Loosestrife family (Lythraceae). It is a large, perennial, wetland plant that can grow up to 9 feet (3 m) tall. It was introduced to the northeastern United States and Canada in the 1800s from Europe, probably as seed contained in soil used as ship’s ballast. It was also brought to North America for ornamental and medicinal purposes.
Chloroquine Resistance In Plasmodium Vivax, J. Kevin Baird
Chloroquine Resistance In Plasmodium Vivax, J. Kevin Baird
United States Navy: Publications
Emerging resistance to chloroquine (CQ) by Plasmodium vivax threatens the health of the hundreds of millions of people routinely exposed to the risk of infection with this organism. CQ has been the first-line therapy for vivax malaria since 1946 (32, 115). Plasmodium falciparum developed resistance to CQ in the 1950s (110), and today it occurs globally (91). Resistance by P. vivax was unknown until 1989, when Australians repatriated from Papua New Guinea failed routine treatment (94). Subsequent reports affirmed that finding, and CQ-resistant P. vivax (CRPV) was reported from Indonesia (8, 35, 99, 100, 111). Reports from Myanmar (76, 82) …

United States Navy: Publications
Background. The target enzyme of pyrimethamine is dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR), but little is known about allelic variants of dhfr in Plasmodium vivax populations. Still less is known about associations between specific alleles and the failure of sulfadoxine/pyrimethamine (S/P) to clear the erythrocytic stages of P. vivax in vivo.
Methods. We studied P. vivax dhfr mutations in 24 patients who received S/P therapy in Papua or Central Java, Indonesia, and we measured the resistance of the alleles in vitro in a dhfr yeast expression assay.
Results. Fourteen (58%) of 24 patients had an inadequate therapeutic response. Two of 6 alleles that …

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications
Over the last decade, research has examined the endocrine-disrupting action of various environmental pollutants, including hormones, pharmaceuticals, and surfactants, in sewage treatment plant effluent. Responding to the growth of concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) and the pollutants present in their wastewater (e.g., nutrients, pharmaceuticals, and hormones), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency developed a new rule that tightens the regulation of CAFOs. In this study, we collected wild fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas) exposed to feedlot effluent (FLE) and observed significant alterations in their reproductive biology. Male fish were demasculinized (having lower testicular testosterone synthesis, altered head morphometrics, and smaller …

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications
Defining the mode(s) of action by which chemicals induce tumors in laboratory animals has become a key to judgments about the relevance of such tumor data for human risk assessment. Frameworks for analyzing mode of action information appear in recent U.S. EPA and IPCS publications relating to cancer risk assessment. This FORUM paper emphasizes that mode of action analytical frameworks depend on both qualitative and quantitative evaluations of relevant data and information: (1) presenting key events in the animal mode of action, (2) developing a “concordance” table for side-by-side comparison of key events as defined in animal studies with comparable …

Middle School Teachers' Self-Efficacy As Health Educators, Claire Spell
Middle School Teachers' Self-Efficacy As Health Educators, Claire Spell
The Corinthian
This study investigated the relationship between certain teachers' backgrounds and their self-efficacy when dealing with sensitive health topics. The eighty-seven participants surveyed were teachers in a central Georgia middle school. Teachers felt strongly that every middle level student should have health education every year (89% agreed or strongly agreed). However, teachers with more experience were less likely to agree or strongly agree ( only 38% did) that they would like to include health QCC objectives in their instructional units. There were more positive responses from teachers who had been parents, who had taught a health related subject, or who had …

Background
Waterpipe smoking is becoming a global public health problem, especially in the Eastern Mediterranean region (EMR).
Methods
We try in this study, which is a cross sectional survey among a representative sample of waterpipe smokers in cafes/restaurants in Aleppo-Syria, to assess the time period for the beginning of this new smoking hype. We recruited 268 waterpipe smokers (161 men, 107 women; mean age ± standard deviation (SD) 30.1 ± 10.2, response rate 95.3%). Participants were divided into 4 birth cohorts (≤ 1960, 1961–1970, 1971–1980, >1980) and year of initiation of waterpipe smoking and daily cigarette smoking were plotted according …

I believe there are four critical elements necessary for any administrator to be a successful leader of learning. The first critical element is the creation and maintenance of an exceptional school climate and culture where learning is approached with enthusiasm and wonder. Second, the administrator must maintain a direct connection to the learning environment, at all times, so that learning is seen as important and expected. Third, ethical leadership of the school community is foundational to the success of the school community, and the building administrators must always act with integrity. Finally, the administrator must develop, implement, and continually support …

Prospects Of Agricultural Entrepreneurship Among Resource Limited Farmers In The Central Appalachian Tobacco Belt, M’Kiaira Kimathi Miriti, Eric Scorsone
University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series
Agricultural entrepreneurship is receiving heightened attention as a potential means for economic revitalization of communities adversely affected by changes in the agricultural sector. In particular, resource limited farmers in the Appalachian region of the United States have been hit by major changes in the tobacco industry. Very little is known about resource limited farmers respond to changing industry conditions and policy attempts to remedy structural change. Recently, the Commonwealth of Kentucky has attempted to assist farmers in adopting new farmbased enterprises to expand their income base. However, it is unclear about the factors that drive entrepreneurial or diversification activities among …

Objectives: This study was undertaken to evaluate changes in fibroid specific symptom severity and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) after uterine artery embolization (UAE) and to consider the impact of these changes on satisfaction with the procedure.
Study design: A validated, fibroid specific, symptom, and HRQOL questionnaire was mailed to 80 women who had undergone UAE from 1998 through 2002. Pre- and postprocedure symptom severity and HRQOL scores were obtained. The primary outcome measure was change in fibroid symptoms and HRQOL after UAE. Secondary outcomes included objective measures of patient satisfaction, and the decrease in uterine volume after UAE.

Does Intervention Change Anything? New Directions In Promoting Positive Youth Development, William M. Kurtines, Marilyn J. Montgomery, Lisa L. Arango, Gabrielle A. Kortsch
Faculty Publications - Graduate School of Counseling
Although a literature on interventions that promote positive development has begun to emerge, important gaps concerning these interventions continue to exist. As part of our program of research, we have made an effort to begin addressing these gaps. An overview of a research project conducted using two sets of multi-ethnic data drawn from the Miami Youth Development Project (Kurtines, Montgomery, Lewis Arango, & Kortsch, 2001) is presented. Though tentative and preliminary, the findings from the project provide preliminary evidence for the success of Changing Lives Program (CLP) in promoting positive qualitative change. Specifically, the results document a relation between participation …

What I Believe About Leadership And Education : A Reflective Essay, Cheri Thomas Cederlund

I believe that the role of the principal is vital in the development of a school climate and a culture where instructional leadership emerges from the teachers themselves. Building a culture that supports and builds capacity for shared leadership and learning takes work. "Such a culture doesn't magically appear; it evolves through explicit and intentional work at defining, redesigning, and continuously improving every aspect of the way they do school" (Conzemius & O'Neill, 2001, p. 114). Although every person within the organization plays a role in initiating this culture, shared responsibility and leadership, the most significant role a principal can …

The report presented here is a description of activities for the first year of an investigation of the health and environmental effects of radioactive contamination caused by working in and/or living near the now abandoned uranium mining and milling operations. Its focus is on McKinley County, New Mexico and its surrounding area, the location of the Eastern Navajo Agency (ENA). Whether environmental and health problems experienced by people living in the ENA are the result of their having worked in uranium mills, lived near and still living close to sources of radiation contamination is the question. Uranium mines in the …
