School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship
We present a theoretical framework and preliminary results for manual categorization of explicit certainty information in 32 English newspaper articles. The explicit certainty markers were identified and categorized according to the four hypothesized dimensions – perspective, focus, timeline, and level of certainty. One hundred twenty one sentences from sample news stories contained a significantly lower frequency of markers per sentence (M=0.46, SD =0.04) than 564 sentences from sample editorials (M=0.6, SD =0.23), p= 0.0056, two-tailed heteroscedastic t-test. Within each dimension, editorials had most numerous markers per sentence in high level of certainty, writer’s point of view, and future and present …

Psychoanalysis And The Bloomsbury Group, Douglas W. Orr, M.D.
Monographs
This monograph is based on a 52-page paper read by the author on April 21, 1978, to members of the San Diego Psychoanalytic Society in La Jolla, California. Intended for Psychoanalytic Quarterly, the paper has not been published until now even though it anticipated Orr's posthumous book, Virginia Woolf's Illnesses (2004), also available from CUDP.

Virginia Woolf's Illnesses, Douglas W. Orr, M.D.
Monographs
Psychoanalyst Douglass Orr declares that his book about Virginia Woolf "is not a psychobiography." Instead, he offers a number of diagnostic possibilities in psychiatry based on extensive records that we have of Virginia Woolf's "life history, both in her own words and in the reminiscences of others." His general thesis is that, "however neurotic Virginia may have been, her usual, day-to-day self was within normal limits. The normal self was, even so, extremely vulnerable to traumata in the area of separations and losses, on the one hand, and, on the other, to direct blows to her self-esteem." Dr. Orr interprets …

Using Lc-Ms With De Novo Software To Fully Characterize The Multiple Methylations Of Lysine Residues In A Recombinant Fragment Of An Outer Membrane Protein From A Virulent Strain Of Rickettsia Prowazekii, Chien-Chung Chao, Shiaw-Lin Wu, Wei-Mei Ching
Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences
The outer membrane protein B (OmpB) of the typhus group rickettsiae is an immunodominant antigen and has been shown to provide protection against typhus in animal models. Consequently, OmpB is currently being considered as a potential rickettsiae vaccine candidate to be used in humans. The OmpB from virulent strains are heavily methylated while the attenuated strains are hypomethylated. Western blot analysis of partially digested OmpB revealed that one of the reactive fragments was located at the N-terminus (fragment A, aa 33–272). Recently, we have over expressed, purified, and chemically methylated the recombinant fragment A from Rickettsia prowazekii (Ap). The methylated …

Nf04-608 Fighting Methamphetamine In Nebraska: Strategies For Individuals And Communities, Marilyn Fox, Sue Brown
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebFact discusses a few ideas on to help protect your family, neighbors and community from dangers associated with methamphetamine (commonly called meth). You can implement these ideas as an individual, as part of a community plan, or develop your own strategies. The goal is not simply to educate your family on the hazards of using meth, but also to help protect them from the many other hazards posed by meth use and production.

Quest For Cash: Exempt Organizations, Joint Ventures, Taxable Subsidiaries, And Unrelated Business Income, J. Patrick Plunkett, Heidi Neff Christianson
Quest For Cash: Exempt Organizations, Joint Ventures, Taxable Subsidiaries, And Unrelated Business Income, J. Patrick Plunkett, Heidi Neff Christianson
William Mitchell Law Review
Most “for-profit” or “business” activities of exempt organizations take one of three forms: (A) The exempt organization may undertake to perform the business activities within the existing structure of the exempt organization. (B) The exempt organization may form a “taxable” subsidiary or affiliate which will perform the business activities. (C) The exempt organization may “partner” with other individuals and entities (both nonprofit and for-profit) to form a corporation, limited liability company (LLC), partnership, joint venture, strategic alliance, or other collaborative effort which will perform the “for-profit” activities. Depending in part upon which of these forms is chosen, any business activities …
Case Note: Civil Procedure—The Forest For The Trees: The Minnesota Supreme Court Considers The Collateral Estoppel Effect Of Criminal Convictions In Illinois Farmers Insurance Co. V. Reed, Charles Delbridge
William Mitchell Law Review
This Note first examines the goals and history of the doctrine of collateral estoppel, including the great changes the doctrine has undergone of late. It then examines the facts of the Reed case, details the procedural history of the case, and outlines the analysis of the courts in deciding the case. This Note then analyzes both the successes and the failures of the Minnesota Supreme Court in the Reed opinion. Finally, this Note concludes that the Reed decision is correct in its privity and due process analyses, but falls short by failing to clarify what collateral estoppel effect a criminal …

The Measurement Of Adolescent Depression, Leigh Roeger
The Measurement Of Adolescent Depression, Leigh Roeger
Shannon Research Press
Very broadly the general aims of this study are: to examine whether the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) measures depressive symptomatology equivalently across adolescent boys and girls; and to examine whether schools exert effects on student levels of depressive symptomatology independently of individual level characteristics. In the course of this study quite a number of subsidiary questions are also addressed. Most of these questions centre around the psychometric properties of the CES-D scale when used with adolescent samples.

2004 - Supporting Student Wellbeing: what does the research tell us about social and emotional development of young people?
Children who are inattentive or disruptive are at high risk of poor achievement progress, especially in literacy. Approximately nine percent of school children have both literacy and externalising behaviour problems, and the long term consequences of these are costly emotionally, socially, educationally and economically. Many of these children are referred to paediatricians and psychologists to assess whether learning difficulties or attention deficits are contributing factors to their behaviour problems at school. Similarly, many are referred to audiologists to test hearing in the event that their observed difficulties in listening and following instructions may be due to hearing impairment. However, following …
