Advanced Mathematical Modeling And Data-Driven Techniques For The Diagnosis Of Diabetes Using Continuous Glucose Monitoring (Cgm) Data, Farah Morsi Jun 2026

Advanced Mathematical Modeling And Data-Driven Techniques For The Diagnosis Of Diabetes Using Continuous Glucose Monitoring (Cgm) Data, Farah Morsi

Theses

Diabetes mellitus is a major and growing health challenge, particularly in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) provides high-resolution time-series data that capture detailed glucose fluctuations over time. However, conventional CGM summary measures, such as mean glucose, standard deviation, and time-in-range, may not fully describe the nonlinear temporal structure of glucose dynamics.

This thesis investigates nonlinear dynamical approaches for analyzing CGM time series, with a focus on recurrence-based analysis and ordinal-network analysis. Recurrence-based methods, including recurrence quantification analysis (RQA), are used to characterize geometric and temporal patterns in reconstructed phase space, while ordinal networks …

On The Fractional Laplacian Type Operator, Maysam Abdulnaser Zain Jun 2026

On The Fractional Laplacian Type Operator, Maysam Abdulnaser Zain

Theses

In this thesis, we study analytical structures arising from Dunkl theory and their

applications to harmonic analysis and fractional Laplacian operators. Dunkl operators are differential–difference operators associated with finite reflection groups, providing a natural generalization of the classical Fourier analysis through the introduction of root systems and multiplicity functions. Within this framework, several classical transforms appear as special cases of the (k,a)-generalized Fourier transform. We study the generalized Fourier transform ₖ,ₐ, its kernel Bk,a (x,y), and the associated translation operator and convolution structures. Using these tools, we construct the corresponding heat …

Non-Judicial Mechanism For Resolving Past Human Rights Violence In Indonesia; How Does It Redress Women Victims Of Sexual Violence?, Sri Wiyanti Eddyono, Audrey Anggita Ayuningtyas

The Indonesian Journal of Socio-Legal Studies

This paper examines whether the Indonesian government's non-judicial settlement for addressing past gross human rights violations (PGHRV) offers redress for the victims of sexual violence of past human rights violations. Indonesia has grappled to address past human rights violations through formal justice mechanisms. There are about 12 unresolved cases, more than half of which concerning sexual violence during conflict. This paper combined a socio-legal approach with mixed methods to gather data on the issue PGHRV: desk research and interviews with key persons involved in the non-judicial mechanism. Due to the heavy political pressure, the formal judicial mechanism reached a dead …

La Espiritualidad: Transmitting Peruvian Culturo-Spiritual Elements Into Occidental Systemic Spaces, Deisy Amorin-Woods

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

This paper is a decolonising, Indigenous qualitative inquiry that integrates elements of critical autoethnography, narrative methods and conceptual analysis to explore how Peruvian Andean cosmology can inform contemporary systems thinking and family therapy practice. Writing as a mestiza, a Peruvian migrant in Australia, the author traces the lived experience of cultural erosion within Western, individualistic contexts and her reconnection with ancestral Andean teachings. These teachings—rooted in reciprocity, ecological attachment, collective responsibility and relational balance—are presented as living epistemologies that offer timely contributions to working therapeutically. The author examines core Andean concepts including ayll (kinship-based community), ayni (sacred reciprocity), Yachay (aprenderes …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Dietary strategies are increasingly recognized as important modulators of breast cancer outcomes, acting through effects on metabolic regulation, weight management, hormone signalling, immune function, and the gut microbiome. However, breast cancer heterogeneity and inter-individual variability mean that generic dietary guidelines may not fully capture patient needs. Precision nutrition offers the opportunity to align dietary interventions with tumour subtype, treatment context, and host biology, potentially enhancing therapeutic response and survivorship in patients diagnosed with breast cancer. In this narrative review, we summarize evidence on dietary patterns and prognosis, and explore how targeted interventions, including fasting regimens, ketogenic diets, and caloric restriction, …

Factors Impacting Western Australian Midwives' Intention To Stay: A Mixed Methods Study, Christine Atkinson, Dianne Bloxsome, Zoe Bradfield, Kate Buchanan, Sarah Dawson, Frances Finch, Sadie Geraghty, Sara Bayes

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Problem Midwifery workforce sustainability remains a critical concern for maternity services. Existing literature predominantly focuses on burnout and attrition, offering limited insight into what influences midwives’ decisions to remain within specific workplaces. Background Midwives consistently report strong professional commitment alongside growing workforce instability. National data indicate that uncertainty about current roles does not necessarily reflect disengagement from the profession. Understanding workplace-level influences on retention is therefore essential for targeted workforce strategy. Aim To examine how workplace stress and satisfaction with the practice environment are associated with Western Australian midwives’ intention to stay in their current job and in the profession. …

Engineering Immunity? Biotechnical Governance And The Experimental Failures Of Project Wolbachia In Singapore, Siew Ying Shee, Orlando Woods, Sayd Randle Jun 2026

Engineering Immunity? Biotechnical Governance And The Experimental Failures Of Project Wolbachia In Singapore, Siew Ying Shee, Orlando Woods, Sayd Randle

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This paper introduces the idea of ‘experimental failure’ to critically interrogate the limits of engineering biological systems for urban governance. Whilst experimentation through projects related to smart cities and eco-cities has garnered significant attention, biotechnical experiments––which manipulate living organisms through technology––remain underexplored. Unlike interventions leveraging non-living, inanimate systems, engineering life must contend with ecological ‘unruliness’ and social uncertainties. These complexities often resist straightforward quantification and exceed conventional evaluation frameworks, demanding a rethinking of what constitutes ‘success’ and ‘failure’ in such interventions. Drawing on ethnographic research with public health officers, pest management professionals and residents in Singapore, we analyse the government-led …

Calibrations And Compliance: The Role Of Motivations In Policy Instrument Design, Panchali Guha, Ishani Mukherjee Jun 2026

Calibrations And Compliance: The Role Of Motivations In Policy Instrument Design, Panchali Guha, Ishani Mukherjee

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Most research on the role of policy calibrations in fostering policy target compliance has focused on the calibration of incentives and deterrents; less attention has been paid to examining the deployment and calibration of a wider range of policy instruments with the intention of eliciting a greater degree of compliance from policy targets with heterogeneous motivations. This article addresses this gap in the literature by empirically testing multiple hypotheses on the relationship between the calibration of different kinds of policy instruments and policy compliance for policy targets characterized by different motivations. Using data from a vignette experiment set in the …

Dementia, Advance Directives, And Second-Order Volitions, Rand Hirmiz Jun 2026

Dementia, Advance Directives, And Second-Order Volitions, Rand Hirmiz

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This paper contributes to the ongoing debate over the authority of advance directives in cases where patients with dementia express desires that conflict with their earlier wishes. Drawing on Harry Frankfurt’s concept of second-order volitions, I argue that the preferences of the pre-dementia self (the “then-self”) should, in most cases, take precedence over those of the post-dementia self (the “now-self”) –  particularly in instances where the now-self has lost the capacity to form second-order volitions and is no longer able to meaningfully repudiate prior values and commitments.

Daily Problematic Smartphone Use Predicts Decreases In Self-Control Capacity: Evidence From Random-Intercept Cross-Lagged Panel Model, Adalia Yin Hui Goh, Andree Hartanto Jun 2026

Daily Problematic Smartphone Use Predicts Decreases In Self-Control Capacity: Evidence From Random-Intercept Cross-Lagged Panel Model, Adalia Yin Hui Goh, Andree Hartanto

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Amidst the widespread increase in global smartphone screen time and the phenomenon of ‘The Great Exhaustion’, where multiple surveys indicate pervasive tiredness and feelings of being drained, there is growing concern about the link between problematic smartphone use and the capacity for self-control. While numerous studies have investigated the relationship between problematic smartphone use and self-control capacity, they are mostly cross-sectional. Thus, it is unclear whether the lack of capacity for self-control is an antecedent or consequence of problematic smartphone use. Addressing the research gap, we conducted a 7-day diary study to investigate the bidirectional relationship between problematic smartphone use …

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Background: Stress is widespread and carries substantial mental health, social, and economic burdens. Yet, access to clinician-led stress management remains constrained by service capacity, cost, and stigma. In response, artificial intelligence (AI)–enabled tools have rapidly proliferated as scalable, self-directed options. However, evidence on how these systems support stress management outside formal clinical settings remains fragmented. Objective: This systematic review aimed to synthesize empirical evidence on how AI-enabled technologies are used for self-directed stress management. We mapped the emerging functions of these tools, the psychological frameworks informing their design, the populations and settings studied, and the outcomes reported. Methods: We conducted …

Drone Urbanisms, Siew Ying Shee Jun 2026

Drone Urbanisms, Siew Ying Shee

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Across contemporary cities, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) particularly drones have emerged as critical instruments for sensing, visualizing, and reconfiguring the built environment. Yet, urban space is not merely a passive backdrop for drone activity; it both shapes and is reshaped by them. The central question for understanding drone urbanism, then, is not only what drones do, but how their deployment redistributes the agency to see, know, and intervene across human operators, infrastructures, and algorithms. This renegotiation of visibility, authority, and knowledge takes shape through the ways drones mediate the governance and experiential textures of the city. Departing from the distant totalities …

When Politics Meets Digital Assets: Gender Identity Salience And Nft Pricing After Roe V. Wade, Xiang Liu, Yao Zhao, Ping Fan Ke Jun 2026

When Politics Meets Digital Assets: Gender Identity Salience And Nft Pricing After Roe V. Wade, Xiang Liu, Yao Zhao, Ping Fan Ke

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Major sociopolitical events can reshape public attention toward identity-related issues, potentially influencing valuation patterns in digital markets where identity-related characteristics are embedded in digital assets. Using the overturning of Roe v. Wade as an exogenous policy shock, this paper examines how gender attributes represented in non-fungible token (NFT) avatars affect market outcomes. Using transaction data from six major avatar-based NFT collections traded on Etherscan in 2022, we apply a quasi-experimental design combining propensity score matching and a difference-in-differences model. The results indicate that the policy shock significantly increased the resale prices of NFTs representing female avatars. These findings suggest that …

Co-Designing With Autistic Livestreamers: Care, Constraints, And Trade-Offs In Livestreaming, Terrance Mok, Anthony Tang, Lora Oehlberg Jun 2026

Co-Designing With Autistic Livestreamers: Care, Constraints, And Trade-Offs In Livestreaming, Terrance Mok, Anthony Tang, Lora Oehlberg

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Autistic livestreamers use platforms like Twitch for social connection, self-expression, and community, but these spaces also impose ongoing social and emotional demands. Prior work has documented these experiences, but less is known about what autistic creators themselves envision for the tools and platforms they use. We address this gap through a Research through Design (RtD) co-design study with three autistic Twitch streamers, using speculative artefacts as discussion prompts to explore how participants reasoned about potential livestreaming technologies. Across three co-design activities, we identify three overarching tensions shaping autistic streaming practice: Expression versus Misinterpretation and Harm; Public Participation versus Control and …

“Grandpa, Can You Speak Nicer?”: Envisioned Chatbot Roles And Design Tensions In Intergenerational Communication Conflicts, Tianyi Zhang, Emran Bin Elias Poh, Yueyue Hou, Yi-Chieh Lee, Renwen Zhang, Jiannan Li, Anthony Tang Jun 2026

“Grandpa, Can You Speak Nicer?”: Envisioned Chatbot Roles And Design Tensions In Intergenerational Communication Conflicts, Tianyi Zhang, Emran Bin Elias Poh, Yueyue Hou, Yi-Chieh Lee, Renwen Zhang, Jiannan Li, Anthony Tang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Intergenerational conversations often break down when differences in tone, language, or expectations lead participants to feel dismissed or misunderstood. In this work, we explore how people envision AI-driven chatbot interventions for addressing communication problems in text-based intergenerational family chat. We conducted a scenario-based design interview with 10 pairs of family members from different generations, in which participants designed chatbot interventions that varied in intervention target and timing. Our findings show that participants expect chatbots to perform multiple themes of intervention, including mediating understanding, providing emotional support, offering evaluative commentary, and guiding interaction through behavioral suggestions. These expectations varied systematically across …

Not Too Early, Not All At Once: Design Tensions In Ai-Mediated Self-Disclosure In Online Dating, Pei-Hua Tsai, Tianyi Zhang, Emran Bin Elias Poh, Anthony Tang, Yung-Ju Chang Jun 2026

Not Too Early, Not All At Once: Design Tensions In Ai-Mediated Self-Disclosure In Online Dating, Pei-Hua Tsai, Tianyi Zhang, Emran Bin Elias Poh, Anthony Tang, Yung-Ju Chang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Online dating relies on self-disclosure, yet initial conversations are fragile: users must navigate uncertainty around timing, boundaries, and reciprocity with little shared context. While advances in AI raise the possibility of mediating disclosure, how such support might reshape the experience of early-stage relational disclosure remains underexplored. We conducted 29 semi-structured interviews to examine how daters envision AI-mediated self-disclosure in online dating. Our findings surface recurring design tensions rather than simple opportunities or risks. Participants welcomed guidance that could pace disclosure, support reflection, and reduce social awkwardness, but stressed preserving agency and authorship. They valued interpretive assistance for sense-making of ambiguous …

Language Embeddings Meet Shallow Autoencoders, Rodrigo Alves, Vojtěch Vančura, Pavel Kordík, Antoine Ledent Jun 2026

Language Embeddings Meet Shallow Autoencoders, Rodrigo Alves, Vojtěch Vančura, Pavel Kordík, Antoine Ledent

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Shallow autoencoders are appealing recommenders due to their simplicity, scalability, and competitive retrieval quality, but they struggle in strict cold-start settings where new items have no interactions. We propose an inductive shallow autoencoder that leverages item side information (language embeddings) by fixing the decoder to item features and learning only an encoder in the same semantic space. To prevent trivial self-reconstruction without enforcing a hard zero diagonal, we introduce diagonal gating: a leave-one-item-out objective that blocks the self-copy shortcut only for the item being updated while retaining context from the rest of the user history. An alternating-style optimization trains the …

Ppg-Sport: A Dataset For Reliable Heart Rate Monitoring From Wrist Ppg Under Dynamic Sports Conditions, Changshuo Hu, Hung Manh Pham, Yiming Zhang, Guanru Yan, Xiao Ma, Yuezhong Wu, Thivya Kandappu, Archan Misra, Dong Ma Jun 2026

Ppg-Sport: A Dataset For Reliable Heart Rate Monitoring From Wrist Ppg Under Dynamic Sports Conditions, Changshuo Hu, Hung Manh Pham, Yiming Zhang, Guanru Yan, Xiao Ma, Yuezhong Wu, Thivya Kandappu, Archan Misra, Dong Ma

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Photoplethysmography (PPG) has become a cornerstone of physiological sensing in wearable devices, enabling non-invasive monitoring of heart rate and related biomarkers. However, its reliability deteriorates sharply under dynamic, high-intensity, or non-periodic motions such as those in sports, where existing datasets fail to capture realistic wrist dynamics. To address this gap, we introduce PPG-Sport, the first large-scale dataset designed for heart rate monitoring from wrist-worn PPG under real sports conditions. The PPG-Sport dataset includes synchronized PPG, inertial measurement unit (IMU), and electrocardiography (ECG) recordings from both wrists of 30 participants across six representative activities: stationary, walking, running, badminton, table tennis, and …

Earable devices, wearables positioned in or around the ear, are undergoing a rapid transformation from audio-centric accessories into multifunctional systems for interaction, contextual awareness, and health monitoring. This evolution is driven by commercial trends emphasizing sensor integration and by a surge of academic interest exploring novel sensing capabilities. Building on the foundation established by earlier surveys, this work presents a timely and comprehensive review of earable research published since 2022. We attempt to answer three core questions: (1) how has earable research evolved in recent years, (2) what enabling resources are now available, and (3) what opportunities remain for future …

Vehicle-Based Multi-Services For Future Smart Cities, Hao Sun, Jinhua Zhao, Hai Yang, Shenhao Wang, Hamsa Balakrishnan, Thomas W. Malone, Hai Wang Jun 2026

Vehicle-Based Multi-Services For Future Smart Cities, Hao Sun, Jinhua Zhao, Hai Yang, Shenhao Wang, Hamsa Balakrishnan, Thomas W. Malone, Hai Wang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Vehicles are crucial for sustaining socioeconomic activity and improving quality of life in modern cities by offering diverse services. These include passenger mobility, goods delivery, information acquisition, and acting as mobile servers such as food trucks and mobile lockers. At the same time, they also contribute to traffic congestion and air pollution. This tension fosters the rise of urban resource-conserving and sustainable service solutions. In this article, we introduce the concept of “Vehicle-Based Multi-Services” (VeMuS), in which a single vehicle offers multiple services simultaneously. Drawing on practical use cases, we examine service classification and integration for vehicles and the potential …

Context Matters: Auditing Gender Bias In T2i Generation Through Risk-Tiered Use-Case Profiles, Jose Luis Luna Campoverde, Yankun Wu, Xiaofei Xie, Noa Garcia Jun 2026

Context Matters: Auditing Gender Bias In T2i Generation Through Risk-Tiered Use-Case Profiles, Jose Luis Luna Campoverde, Yankun Wu, Xiaofei Xie, Noa Garcia

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Text-to-image (T2I) generative models are increasingly used to produce content for education, media, and public-facing communication, and are starting to be integrated into higher-impact pipelines. Since generated images tend to reinforce stereotypes, producing representational erasure via “default” depictions and shaping perceptions of who belongs in certain roles, a growing body of work has proposed metrics to quantify gender bias in T2I outputs. Yet existing evaluations remain fragmented. Metrics are often reported without a shared view of what they measure, what assumptions they entail, or how their results should be interpreted under different deployment contexts. This limits the usefulness of gender …

Sea-Ice Observation In The Arctic By The Arab Satellite 813, Simulated By The Radiative Transfer Model ‘Sciatran’, Tuqa Mohsin Al Hajri Jun 2026

Sea-Ice Observation In The Arctic By The Arab Satellite 813, Simulated By The Radiative Transfer Model ‘Sciatran’, Tuqa Mohsin Al Hajri

Theses

The purpose of this research is to explore the spectral behavior of sea ice and to understand how Arctic sea ice surfaces appear when they are observed with a hyperspectral sensor. This is crucial because sea ice changes a lot during the melt season, and different surface types can sometimes look similar to a human eye, but physically they are different. It is thus essential to identify the spectral differences between these surfaces. The main objective of this study is to examine how the spectra of white ice and melt ponds change when their physical and optical properties are varied, …
