Ondaatje's The English Patient And Altered States Of Narrative, Beverley Curran Sep 2004

Ondaatje's The English Patient And Altered States Of Narrative, Beverley Curran

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

Beverley Curran argues in her paper "Ondaatje's The English Patient and Altered States of Narrative" that Ondaatje reconfigures in his novel the "romantic" figure of the father/artist as a clandestine lover, a drug addict, or an eccentric translator, all figures with dependencies. In The English Patient, the father or artist's sense of source, continuity, or authority are translated into a narrative which rejects the perverse captivity demanded of the lover and the translator by fidelity or by the tenets of realistic representation. Using sex, drugs, and translation, Ondaatje deranges both time and space to reconfigure the role of the artist …

Incentives For Pragmatic Collaborations: Factors For A Win-Win-Win Scenario For Managers, Firms And The Automotive Product Development Industry, Surendra S. Khambete Sep 2004

Incentives For Pragmatic Collaborations: Factors For A Win-Win-Win Scenario For Managers, Firms And The Automotive Product Development Industry, Surendra S. Khambete

Student Scholarship

Global automotive supply chains comprise of an intricate network of suppliers, brokers, manufacturers and customers. Within the industry structure and sometimes within automotive product development programs these firms could be competitors, customers, suppliers or partners at the same time. Firms are revisiting their non-core businesses and outsourcing to a set of strategic suppliers that help them be competitive. The players in the supply chain rarely cater to only one customer and hence it is important to develop a secure network when you know that your customers and suppliers will also be interacting with your competition. Developing this secure network involves …

Motherhood, Migration And Methodology: Giving Voice To The Other, Ruth Desouza Sep 2004

Motherhood, Migration And Methodology: Giving Voice To The Other, Ruth Desouza

The Qualitative Report

This paper discusses the need for multi-cultural methodologies that develop knowledge about the maternity experience of migrant women and that are attuned to women’s maternity-related requirements under multi-cultural conditions. Little is known about the transition to parenthood for mothers in a new country, particularly when the country is New Zealand. This paper will challenge the positivist hegemony of previously completed research on migrant women by reflecting on my own experience as a researcher grounded in a broadly-based, pluralistic set of critical epistemologies that allowed me to uncover the issues and contexts that impacted on the experience of migrant women. It …

Testing Species Boundaries In An Ancient Species Complex With Deep Phylogeographic History: Genus Xantusia (Squamata: Xantusiidae), Keith A. Crandall, Elizabeth A. Sinclair, Robert L. Bezy, Kathryn Bolles, Jose L. Camarillo, Jack W. Sites Sep 2004

Testing Species Boundaries In An Ancient Species Complex With Deep Phylogeographic History: Genus Xantusia (Squamata: Xantusiidae), Keith A. Crandall, Elizabeth A. Sinclair, Robert L. Bezy, Kathryn Bolles, Jose L. Camarillo, Jack W. Sites

Faculty Publications

Identification of species in natural populations has recently received increased attention with a number of investigators proposing rigorous methods for species delimitation. Morphologically conservative species (or species complexes) with deep phylogenetic histories (and limited gene flow) are likely to pose particular problems when attempting to delimit species, yet this is crucial to comparative studies of the geography of speciation. We apply two methods of species delimitation to an ancient group of lizards (genus Xantusia) that occur throughout southwestern North America. Mitochondrial cytochrome b and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide dehydrogenase subunit 4 gene sequences were generated from samples taken throughout the geographic …

Modular Production Networks In Electronics: The Nexus Between Management And Economics Research, Byron Gangnes, Ari Van Assche Sep 2004

Modular Production Networks In Electronics: The Nexus Between Management And Economics Research, Byron Gangnes, Ari Van Assche

Research Collection School Of Economics

In the last two decades, the electronics industry has evolved from a vertically integrated industry to a vertically segmented one. This transformation has often been attributed to the modularization of electronic products. In this paper, we argue that the degree of modularity is an active choice variable for a firm. As a result, it is necessary to focus on the underlying factors that drive both modularity and the organization of production. This provides insights into the transformation taking place in global electronics production, with vertical fragmentation, horizontal consolidation, and the growth of Asian electronics production.

Analyses Of The Spring Dust Storm Frequency Of Northern China In Relation To Antecedent And Concurrent Wind, Precipitation, Vegetation, And Soil Moisture Conditions, Xiaodong Liu, Zhi-Yong Yin, Xiaoye Zhang, Xuchao Yang Aug 2004

Analyses Of The Spring Dust Storm Frequency Of Northern China In Relation To Antecedent And Concurrent Wind, Precipitation, Vegetation, And Soil Moisture Conditions, Xiaodong Liu, Zhi-Yong Yin, Xiaoye Zhang, Xuchao Yang

Environmental and Ocean Sciences: Faculty Scholarship

The relationships between the spring (March–May) dust storm frequency (DSF) of northern China, gridded precipitation based on gauge observations, wind velocity at different geopotential heights, satellite-measured land vegetation index, and grid box soil moisture data during 1982–2001 are examined using correlation analysis and singular value decomposition methods. The results show that the spring DSF time series has strong positive correlations with the upwind wind velocity but strong negative correlations with the antecedent summer (June–August) and annual (June of the prior year to May of the current year) precipitation and soil moisture anomalies, as well as with the spring vegetation condition …

Distributing And Synchronizing Heterogeneous Metadata In Geospatial Information Repositories For Access, Elaine L. Westbrooks

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

IN 1998 THE Albert R. Mann Library created the Cornell University Geospatial Information Repository (CUGIR), a web-based repository providing free access to geospatial data and metadata for New York State. Since its inception, CUGIR has undergone a series of changes and upgrades in response to emerging standards and technologies in the field of geospatial information systems (GIs) and digital library research. Its continuous adoption of new library and GIs standards and developments has made CUGIR increasingly more accessible to users within Cornell University and beyond.

The Cornell University Geospatial Information Repository has a number of characteristics that pose unique challenges …

The Benefits And Costs Of City-County Unification: An Analysis Of City Of Albuquerque And Bernalillo County Finances, Lee A. Reynis

BBER Publications

The purpose of this report was to answer the question, "what are the costs and benefits of adopting the proposed unification charter?" After certain modifications were made to the research design, the UNM Bureau of Business and Economic Research (BBER) did this study on behalf of the Albuquerque-Bernalillo County Unification Commission. The report is organized into five sections: an in-depth analysis of major tax revenue sources; an examination of services provided to residents and businesses; a consideration of the question of subsidies ("who gets and who pays for services"); an examination of how total government costs may be affected by …

Suburban Sprawl, Jewish Law, And Jewish Values, Michael E. Lewyn Aug 2004

Suburban Sprawl, Jewish Law, And Jewish Values, Michael E. Lewyn

ExpressO

The article explains how automobile-dependent suburban sprawl is in conflict with Jewish law and Jewish values. This is so in three ways. First, Jewish law requires Jews to make the poor self-supporting- but suburban sprawl creates welfare dependency by making it impossible for poor people without cars to reach jobs in auto-dependent suburbs. Second, Jewish law requires Jews to walk rather than ride to services on holy days- but in most low-density suburbs, very few people can live within walking distance of a synagogue (or anything else for that matter). Third, Jewish law has traditionally discouraged development of rural land …

Conjoint Marital Therapy: Proxy Voice Intervention And Softening In The Context Of Couple Enactments, Ryan B. Seedall Aug 2004

Conjoint Marital Therapy: Proxy Voice Intervention And Softening In The Context Of Couple Enactments, Ryan B. Seedall

Theses and Dissertations

This study evaluated the effectiveness of proxy voice intervention, embedded within couple enactments, on client-perceived softening. During enactments, direct couple interaction is the focus while the therapist coaches from the periphery. In the context of an enactment, the therapist may use proxy voice when partners appear to be distressed and expressing themselves in terms of secondary emotions by modeling appropriate attachment and self-concept expression. The primary research question was whether therapist use of proxy voice in an enactment would be more likely to bring about softening effects, or whether use of proxy voice was counter-intuitive to enactment conceptualization and would …

The purpose of this case study was to evaluate the Parks As Classrooms program and how it impacts the students and the community.

Multiple means of data collection were necessary in order for valid assessment to take place. First, interviews were conducted with principle stakeholders. Observations of field trips were done. These data were imported into NUD*IST …

Frances Anne Hopkins And The George Back Connection: Tracking Through The Canadian Landscapes Of Two Nineteenth-Century Artists To Find Where Lines Converge, Pamela K. Macdonald Aug 2004

Frances Anne Hopkins And The George Back Connection: Tracking Through The Canadian Landscapes Of Two Nineteenth-Century Artists To Find Where Lines Converge, Pamela K. Macdonald

Arctic and Northern Studies

My paper examines the artistic influence of the renowned British explorer and artist George Back on fellow Rupert's Land artist Frances Anne Hopkins, wife of Edward Hopkins, the man in charge of the Montreal Division of the Hudson's Bay Company in the mid-nineteenth century. The aesthetic gap between the two artists is wide in that Back's sketches depict a kind of terrifying wasteland quality best described as sublime. Hopkins' Canadian landscapes are colorful, on the other hand, and show people who are at ease with their surroundings. Other notable artists also documented nineteenth-century Canadian landscapes in visual images and may …
