Tackling Crime And Fear Of Crime While Waiting At Britain’S Railway Stations, Paul Cozens, Richard Neale, David Hillier, Jeremy Whitaker Sep 2004

Tackling Crime And Fear Of Crime While Waiting At Britain’S Railway Stations, Paul Cozens, Richard Neale, David Hillier, Jeremy Whitaker

Journal of Public Transportation

Crime on the railways in Britain is an increasing concern for train operating companies, the British Transport Police (BTP), passengers, and local residents. Significantly, rail users consistently perceive their risks from crime to be considerably higher than official crime statistics indicate, having a negative affect on levels of patronage. This article presents an exploratory study of passengers’ fear of crime while waiting at railway stations using Quick Time Virtual Reality (QTVR) walkthrough scenes. QTVR arguably represents an innovative, dynamic, and interactive environmental stimulus for gaining insights into passengers’ fear of crime. Visibility at stations was identified as a crucial factor …

The Crisis Of Public Transport In India: Overwhelming Needs But Limited Resources, John Pucher, Nisha Korattyswaroopam, Neenu Ittyerah Sep 2004

The Crisis Of Public Transport In India: Overwhelming Needs But Limited Resources, John Pucher, Nisha Korattyswaroopam, Neenu Ittyerah

Journal of Public Transportation

The rapid growth of India’s urban population has put enormous strains on all transport systems. Burgeoning travel demand far exceeds the limited supply of transport infrastructure and services. Public transport, in particular, has been completely overwhelmed. Most bus and train services are overcrowded, undependable, slow, inconvenient, uncoordinated, and dangerous. Moreover, the public ownership and operation of most public transport services has greatly reduced productivity and inflated costs. India’s cities desperately need improved and expanded public transport service. Unfortunately, meager government financial assistance and the complete lack of any supportive policies, such as traffic priority for buses, place public transport in …

Civil War Book Review

Cause for concern

The approaching crisis

What caused the Civil War? That question seems simple to answer. However, it is one of the most complex to explain. Many historians have weighed in; James McPherson even won the Pulitzer Prize in the process. As clearly illustrated by t....

Conference papers

Increased competition, geographically expanded marketplaces, technology replication and an
ever discerning consumer base, are reasons why companies need to regularly reappraise
their competencies in terms of activities and functions they perform themselves. Where viable
alternatives exist, companies should consider outsourcing of non-core activities and functions.
Within SCM (Supply Chain Management) it could be preferable if a “one stop shop” existed
for companies seeking to outsource functions identified as non-core. “Traditionally” structured
LSP’s who have concentrated their service offer around providing warehousing and transport
activities are potentially at a crossroads – clients and potential clients requiring “new” services
which could increase …

Listening Spaces: Audiophiles, Technology And Domestic Music Listening, Brian O'Neill Sep 2004

Listening Spaces: Audiophiles, Technology And Domestic Music Listening, Brian O'Neill

Conference Papers

This paper examines the interrelationship of technology, space and identity as exhibited in the domestic music listening practices of the audiophile. Music listening in domestic contexts provides both a physical and imaginary space of cultural consumption. The paper describes work in progress into phenomenological aspects of listening, practices of audio technology use in domestic contexts, and features of identity formation based on a qualitative study of hi-fi listeners. Technological and cultural change in the production of aural soundscapes and processes of reception provide the backdrop to the current study. Three main issues are addressed. Firstly, the promise of digital technology …

Mega-Sporting Events In Developing Nations: Playing The Way To Prosperity?, Victor Matheson, Robert Baade Sep 2004

Mega-Sporting Events In Developing Nations: Playing The Way To Prosperity?, Victor Matheson, Robert Baade

Economics Department Working Papers

Supporters of mega-sporting events such as the World Cup and Olympics claim that these events attract hoards of wealthy visitors and lead to lasting economic benefits for the host regions. Developing countries have become increasingly vocal in demanding a share of the economic benefits of these international games. The specialized infrastructure and operating expenses required to host these events, however, can be substantial. Independent researchers have found that boosters’ projections of the economic impact of sporting events exaggerate the true economic impact of these competitions, and these events are an even worse investment for developing countries than for industrialized nations.

This is Old Dominion University's fifth annual State of the Region report. While it represents the work of many people connected in various ways to the university, the report does not constitute an official viewpoint of Old Dominion, or it's president, Dr. Roseann Runte.

The report maintains the goal of stimulating thought and discussion that ultimately will make Hampton Roads an even better place to live. We are proud of our region's many successes, but realize that it is possible to improve our performance. In order to do so, we must have accurate information about "where we are" and a …

Post-Nationalism And The Cinematic Apparatus In Minghella's Adaptation Of Ondaatje's The English Patient, Hsuan Hsu Sep 2004

Post-Nationalism And The Cinematic Apparatus In Minghella's Adaptation Of Ondaatje's The English Patient, Hsuan Hsu

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

Hsuan Hsu, in his paper "Post-Nationalism and the Cinematic Apparatus in Minghella's Adaptation of Ondaatje's The English Patient," discusses Anthony Minghella's cinematic version of Ondaatje's novel. In Hsu's view, Minghella and Ondaatje (Ondaatje collaborated on the film script) emphasize in the film the visual and social implications of mapmaking in order to align imperialism with the cinematic apparatus. While the film explores the workings of visual power, it also explores their adulteration by unmapped forces of desire: Almásy's and Katherine's adulterous relationship transgresses marital and national constraints, but also reinscribes them when Almásy desires to possess her body and Katherine …

The Beecher Sisters As Nineteenth-Century Feminist Icons Of The Sameness-Difference Debate, Tracy A. Thomas Sep 2004

The Beecher Sisters As Nineteenth-Century Feminist Icons Of The Sameness-Difference Debate, Tracy A. Thomas

Akron Law Faculty Publications

This essay reviews the recent book, The Beecher Sisters by Barbara White, through the lens of feminist theory. It argues that each of the three great women chronicled in the book – Catharine Beecher, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and Isabella Beecher Hooker – serve as icons for each of the distinct strands of modern feminist thought. Barbara White, a professor emeritus of women’s studies at the University of New Hampshire, has given the field of women’s legal history a boost with her interdisciplinary contribution to the social and legal history of women. In The Beecher Sisters, White introduces us to each …

Visual Culture: The Later Mallarmé And Japonisme, Marshall C. Olds Sep 2004

Visual Culture: The Later Mallarmé And Japonisme, Marshall C. Olds

French Language and Literature Papers

Like his painter-contemporaries, Mallarmé’s attention to japonisme was to a visual phenomenon. Like them, he had a strong visual sense, and one could argue that even the early poems that tried to apprehend nothingness did so as if the problem were a visual one even if the results were more the ideas of things seen, rather than the creation of images. His visual orientation did change dramatically, however, by the time of La Dernière Mode in 1874, readying him for the acculturation to be provided first by Manet, and then by others, notably Whistler. The esthetics of japonisme is a …

Is The Maquila Industry A Factor Influencing Migration To Reynosa, Tamaulipas, Mexico?, Maria Cristina Guzman

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

This thesis is divided into three chapters. Chapter two contains the thesis statement, methods, and scope. In chapter three, there is a summary of the findings and conclusions. Analysis of the data collected through a survey conducted in 1997 among maquila workers reveals that a total of 51.01% of both the men and women's moves were influenced by the maquila industry. Traces Of Desire And Fantasy : The Government-Generated Discourse On Technology In Post-Handover Hong Kong, Sze Chung Chow Sep 2004

Traces Of Desire And Fantasy : The Government-Generated Discourse On Technology In Post-Handover Hong Kong, Sze Chung Chow

Lingnan Theses

Information technology almost became the savior for Hong Kong in the process of recovering from the Asian financial crisis immediately after the Handover. The claims to establish and further the development of information technology were made against a certain perception of Hong Kong, in which the place in past decades had indulged in the wrong direction of labour-intensive, cut-throat production in the manufacturing industries and bubble-like speculation in the real-estate sector, and against a certain vision of the future, with more and more competition in the age of globalization, neo-liberal economies, and so on.

This thesis demonstrates, firstly, how the …
