A Meta-Analytic Review Of The Effects Of High Stress On Eyewitness Memory, Kenneth A. Deffenbacher, Brian H. Bornstein, Steven D. Penrod, E. Kiernan Mcgorty Dec 2004

A Meta-Analytic Review Of The Effects Of High Stress On Eyewitness Memory, Kenneth A. Deffenbacher, Brian H. Bornstein, Steven D. Penrod, E. Kiernan Mcgorty

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

In the past 30 years researchers have examined the impact of heightened stress on the fidelity of eyewitness memory. Meta-analyses were conducted on 27 independent tests of the effects of heightened stress on eyewitness identification of the perpetrator or target person and separately on 36 tests of eyewitness recall of details associated with the crime. There was considerable support for the hypothesis that high levels of stress negatively impact both types of eyewitness memory. Meta-analytic Z-scores, whether unweighted or weighted by sample size, ranged from -5.40 to -6.44 (high stress condition–low stress condition). The overall effect sizes were -.31 for …

Loop Quantum Gravity Effects On Inflation And The Cmb, Shinji Tsujikawa, Parampreet Singh, Roy Maartens Dec 2004

Loop Quantum Gravity Effects On Inflation And The Cmb, Shinji Tsujikawa, Parampreet Singh, Roy Maartens

Faculty Publications

In loop quantum cosmology, the universe avoids a big bang singularity and undergoes an early and short super-inflation phase. During super-inflation, non-perturbative quantum corrections to the dynamics drive an inflaton field up its potential hill, thus setting the initial conditions for standard inflation. We show that this effect can raise the inflaton high enough to achieve sufficient e-foldings in the standard inflation era. We analyse the cosmological perturbations generated when slow-roll is violated after super-inflation and show that loop quantum effects can in principle leave an indirect signature on the largest scales in the CMB, with some loss of power …

Secure Context-Sensitive Authorization, Kazuhiro Minami, David Kotz Dec 2004

Secure Context-Sensitive Authorization, Kazuhiro Minami, David Kotz

Computer Science Technical Reports

There is a recent trend toward rule-based authorization systems to achieve flexible security policies. Also, new sensing technologies in pervasive computing make it possible to define context-sensitive rules, such as ``allow database access only to staff who are currently located in the main office.'' However, these rules, or the facts that are needed to verify authority, often involve sensitive context information. This paper presents a secure context-sensitive authorization system that protects confidential information in facts or rules. Furthermore, our system allows multiple hosts in a distributed environment to perform the evaluation of an authorization query in a collaborative way; we …

Structural Properties Of Discs And Bulges Of Early-Type Galaxies, Roelof S. De Jong, Luc Simard, Roger L. Davies, R. P. Saglia, David Burstein, Matthew Colless, Robert Mcmahan, Gary Wegner

Dartmouth Scholarship

We have used the EFAR sample of galaxies to investigate the light distributions of early-type galaxies. We decompose the two-dimensional light distribution of the galaxies in a flattened spheroidal component with a Sérsic radial light profile and an inclined disc component with an exponential light profile. We show that if we assume that all galaxies can have a spheroidal and a disc component, then the brightest, bulge-dominated elliptical galaxies have a fairly broad distribution in the Sérsic profile shape parameter nB, with a median of approximately 3.7 and with σ∼ 0.9. Other galaxies have smaller nB values. …

Canning Spam: Consumer Protection Or A Lid On Free Speech?, Grant C. Yang Dec 2004

Canning Spam: Consumer Protection Or A Lid On Free Speech?, Grant C. Yang

Duke Law & Technology Review

The United States Congress recently passed the first federal legislation to curb the influx of spam. However, the Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography and Marketing Act ("CAN-SPAM Act") left some measures to be enacted by the Federal Trade Commission ("FTC"), and some consumers are calling for the Act to have a broader reach and for the creation of a Do-Not-E-Mail registry. Conversely, the FTC decided to delay the creation of a registry and opted to assist in the development of a new technological authentication system. This iBrief looks at the current state of spam and explains that it is …

Scattering Of Low- To Intermediate-Energy Positrons From Molecular Hydrogen, David D. Reid, William B. Klann, J. M. Wadehra Dec 2004

Scattering Of Low- To Intermediate-Energy Positrons From Molecular Hydrogen, David D. Reid, William B. Klann, J. M. Wadehra

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Research Publications

Using a complex model potential, we have calculated the total, integrated elastic, momentum transfer, absorption, and differential cross sections for positrons scattered from molecular hydrogen. The widely available software package GAUSSIAN is used to generate the radial electronic charge density of the molecule which is used to produce the interaction potentials. The quasifree absorption potential, previously developed and used for positron-atom scattering, is extended to positron scattering from molecular targets. It is shown that this model potential approach produces accurate results even into the low-energy regime.

Faculty Publications

The primary scientific mission of the Black Hole Finder Probe (BHFP), part of the NASA Beyond Einstein program, is to survey the local Universe for black holes over a wide range of mass and accretion rate. One approach to such a survey is a hard X-ray coded-aperture imaging mission operating in the 10-600 keV energy band, a spectral range that is considered to be especially useful in the detection of black hole sources. The development of new inorganic scintillator materials provides improved performance (for example, with regards to energy resolution and timing) that is well suited to the BHFP science …

The MEGA mission would enable a sensitive all-sky survey of the medium-energy γ-ray sky (0.3-50 MeV). This mission will bridge the huge sensitivity gap between the COMPTEL and OSSE experiments on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, the SPI and IBIS instruments on INTEGRAL and the visionary ACT mission. It will, among other things, serve to compile a much larger catalog of sources in this energy range, perform far deeper searches for supernovae, better measure the galactic continuum emission as well as identify the components of the cosmic diffuse emission. The large field of view will allow MEGA to continuously monitor …

Acetylcholine: Ii. Nicotinic Receptors, Joyce Besheer, Rick A. Bevins Dec 2004

Acetylcholine: Ii. Nicotinic Receptors, Joyce Besheer, Rick A. Bevins

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The nicotinic cholinergic system has been widely implicated in mediating learning and/or memory processes in human and nonhuman animals. This chapter highlights various areas of basic research in which stimulation or blockade of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) has been shown to affect an animals performance in a variety of tasks thought to measure learning and memory. For example, under certain conditions, stimulation of nAChRs by nicotine (or other nAChRs agonists) can enhance working memory of primates as measured in a delayed matching-to-sample task. Attentional processes are also improved in rats as indexed by a five-choice serial reaction time task. Further, …

A Performance And Schedulability Analysis Of An Autonomous Mobile Robot, Ala' Adel Qadi, Steve Goddard, Jiangyang Huang, Shane Farritor Dec 2004

A Performance And Schedulability Analysis Of An Autonomous Mobile Robot, Ala' Adel Qadi, Steve Goddard, Jiangyang Huang, Shane Farritor

School of Computing: Technical Reports

We present an autonomous, mobile, robotics application that requires dynamic adjustments of task execution rates to meet the demands of an unpredictable environment. The Robotic Safety Marker (RSM) system consists of one lead robot, the foreman, and a group of guided robots, called robotic safety markers (a.k.a., barrels). An extensive analysis is conducted of two applications running on the foreman. Both applications require adjusting task periods to achieve desired performance metrics with respect to the speed at which a system task is completed, the accuracy of RSM placement, or the number of RSMs controlled by the foreman. A static priority …

Interdependent Assembly Of Specific Regulatory Lipids And Membrane Fusion Proteins Into The Vertex Ring Domain Of Docked Vacuoles, Rutilio A. Fratti, Youngsoo Jun, Alexey J. Merz, Nathan Margolis, William Wickner Dec 2004

Interdependent Assembly Of Specific Regulatory Lipids And Membrane Fusion Proteins Into The Vertex Ring Domain Of Docked Vacuoles, Rutilio A. Fratti, Youngsoo Jun, Alexey J. Merz, Nathan Margolis, William Wickner

Dartmouth Scholarship

Membrane microdomains are assembled by lipid partitioning (e.g., rafts) or by protein-protein interactions (e.g., coated vesicles). During docking, yeast vacuoles assemble "vertex" ring-shaped microdomains around the periphery of their apposed membranes. Vertices are selectively enriched in the Rab GTPase Ypt7p, the homotypic fusion and vacuole protein sorting complex (HOPS)-VpsC Rab effector complex, SNAREs, and actin. Membrane fusion initiates at vertex microdomains. We now find that the "regulatory lipids" ergosterol, diacylglycerol and 3- and 4-phosphoinositides accumulate at vertices in a mutually interdependent manner. Regulatory lipids are also required for the vertex enrichment of SNAREs, Ypt7p, and HOPS. Conversely, SNAREs and actin …

Risk, Rents, And Regressivity: Why The United States Needs Both An Income Tax And A Vat, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah Dec 2004

Risk, Rents, And Regressivity: Why The United States Needs Both An Income Tax And A Vat, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah

Articles

In this article, Prof. Avi-Yonah argues that the legal academic debate about fundamental tax reform from 1974 onward has been skewed by the assumption that a consumption tax must replace the income tax. He addresses three of the major issue in recent writings on the income/consumption tax debate, and shows how none of the arguments in favor of the consumption tax are conclusive. Avi-Yonah also addresses the various consumption tax proposals that have been made and shows that they are all deficient in comparison with a VAT, as well as failing to achieve the goals of an income tax. Finally, …

Global Changes In Regulating Corporate Auditors: A Comparative Assessment, Richard Thompson Ainsworth Dec 2004

Global Changes In Regulating Corporate Auditors: A Comparative Assessment, Richard Thompson Ainsworth

Faculty Scholarship

Auditor independence was a global concern of financial regulators in the 1990's. Some observers saw this in a positive light, a natural development. Adjusting auditor independence rules was a manifestation of global convergence in corporate governance structures. New rules, especially rules leaning toward a harmonized system were welcome.

There was a more sobering view. This view held that global regulators were less concerned with convergence than they were with a sense of impending disaster. Things had gone too far. Significant, maybe even radical change was needed. The independence of corporate auditors had eroded; trust had been fundamentally compromised in the …

Signature Of Electron Capture In Iron‐Rich Ejecta Of Sn 2003du, Peter Hoflich, Christopher L. Gerardy, Ken-Ichi Nomoto, Kentaro Motohara, Robert A. Fesen Dec 2004

Signature Of Electron Capture In Iron‐Rich Ejecta Of Sn 2003du, Peter Hoflich, Christopher L. Gerardy, Ken-Ichi Nomoto, Kentaro Motohara, Robert A. Fesen

Dartmouth Scholarship

Late-time near-infrared and optical spectra of the normal-bright Type Ia supernova 2003du about 300 days after the explosion are presented. At this late epoch, the emission profiles of well-isolated [Fe II] lines (in particular that of the strong 1.644 μm feature) trace out the global kinematic distribution of radioactive material in the expanding supernova ejecta. In SN 2003du, the 1.644 μm [Fe II] line seems to show a flat-topped profile, indicative of a thick but hollow-centered expanding shell, rather than a strongly peaked profile that would be expected from a "center-filled" distribution. Based on detailed models for exploding Chandrasekhar-mass white …
