The Yosemite Butterflies (Text), And The Yosemite Butterflies (Text): Supplement Of Additional Information, Collections And Corrections For Volume 5, No. 1, Kenneth E. Davenport

The Taxonomic Report of the International Lepidoptera Survey

The current checklist covers the 170 known species and additional 48 subspecies known to occur in the Yosemite region, California, United States. This represents a total of 218 taxa (some being undescribed and unnamed) now recognized in the study area. This compares with Garth and Tilden’s 1963 survey which recognized 134 species and 16 additional subspecies, a total of 150 taxa. In addition to those, six additional species reported from the region are “questionable or doubtful” and another six species occur just outside the defined region.

The supplement includes additional information for the benefit of those who obtained the first …

To Hou Heneka And Continuous Change, Christopher Mirus

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

Beginning with Aristotle’s statement in Physics II.2 that motion must be continuous to be for the sake of an end, I argue that properly understood, continuity is actually a sufficient condition for the goal- directedness of any motion in Aristotle’s teleology. I establish this conclusion first for the simple motions discussed in Physics V-VI, and then for complex changes such as the generation and development of a living thing. In both steps of the argument, the notion of καθ’ αυτό agency serves as a key link between continuity and goal-directedness. The understanding of Aristotle’s teleology that emerges from the consideration …

Snow Accumulation, Surface Height Change, And Firn Densification At Summit, Greenland: Insights From 2 Years Of In Situ Observation, Jack E. Dibb, Mark Fahnestock Dec 2004

Snow Accumulation, Surface Height Change, And Firn Densification At Summit, Greenland: Insights From 2 Years Of In Situ Observation, Jack E. Dibb, Mark Fahnestock

Earth Sciences

Weekly measurements of surface height change were made at an accumulation forest of 100 stakes at Summit, Greenland, over a 2-year period (17 August 2000 to 8 August 2002). On average, the surface height relative to the stakes increased 64 (±4.8) cm in the first year and 65 (±5.3) cm in the second, identical to the average (65 ± 4.5 cm yr−1) previously reported for the period 1991–1995 in a similar forest 28 km to the southwest. The continuous 2-year data set indicates that the rate of surface rise was not constant, with the summers of 2001 and …

A Stag Hunt Account And Defense Of Transnational Labour Standards---A Preliminary Look At The Problem, Alan Hyde Dec 2004

A Stag Hunt Account And Defense Of Transnational Labour Standards---A Preliminary Look At The Problem, Alan Hyde

Rutgers Law School (Newark) Faculty Papers

Transnational labor standards are modeled as cooperative solutions to the class of strategic dilemmas known as Stag Hunts, in which all actors would gain from a cooperative solution, but only if all cooperate. If you think a partner will defect, your best strategy is also to defect. Intuitively, India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh will all be better off if none of their children work and all go to school; however if one defects from this agreement it will capture a stream of foreign investment linked to child labor. Understanding Stag Hunts explains why transnational labor standards are found both in genuinely …

Employment Discrimination In A High Velocity Labor Market, Alan Hyde Dec 2004

Employment Discrimination In A High Velocity Labor Market, Alan Hyde

Rutgers Law School (Newark) Faculty Papers

Silicon Valley employers employ few African-Americans, Latino/as, or older workers, yet do not fit the usual paradigms of employment discrimination: they exhibit no taste for uniformity and do not employ job tournaments or internal labor markets. A new model of employment discrimination attributes disparate hiring in Silicon Valley to a combination of: demands for specific skill sets at hiring (the opposite of the subjective criteria that have long beguiled scholars of discrimination) and concomitant refusal to train; hiring through networks of personal contacts; and rewards to career paths that alternate employment with self-employment. Overcoming the disparate impact of these employment …

The Paperless Chase: Electronic Voting And Democratic Values, Daniel P. Tokaji Dec 2004

The Paperless Chase: Electronic Voting And Democratic Values, Daniel P. Tokaji

The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law Working Paper Series

The 2000 election ignited a fierce controversy over the machinery used for voting. Civil rights advocates have called for the replacement of outdated paper-based voting equipment, like the infamous “hanging chad” punch card. Yet the introduction of paperless technology, especially electronic “touchscreen” machines, has induced widespread concern that software might be rigged to alter election results. This article examines the debate over electronic voting, which raises fundamental questions about the democratic values that should guide the administration of elections. It frames the debate by defining four equality norms embodied in federal voting rights laws and the Constitution. Electronic voting has …

The Balance Between Higher Education Autonomy And Public Quality Assurance: Development Of The Portuguese System For Teacher Education Accreditation, Bártolo Campos

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

The accreditation systems of higher education institutions and/or programmes are becoming a policy measure used to find a balance between their autonomy and public assurance concerning the quality of the qualifications they award. This article analyses, from the point of view of this balance of power, the process of development of the Portuguese accreditation system aimed at providing public assurance that initial teacher education programmes are more driven by social demand, namely by the changing school education needs. ...

Deregulation And Its Implications For Economic Growth, B.E. Aigbokhan Dec 2004

Deregulation And Its Implications For Economic Growth, B.E. Aigbokhan

Economic and Financial Review

The study found that real exchange rate has a positive and significant impact on growth, inflation has similar impact. Government fixed investment has negative significant impact on growth, and so does external debt. Fiscal deficit was found to have positive but insignificant impact on growth. As the period covered in the study contains twenty six pre-deregulation years, the influence of deregulation may not have been accurately captured. Partly to address this concern, a dummy variables was introduced for the SAP years. It was found not to be significant, implying that the (SAP) introduced since 1986 did not translate into long-run …

Clustering And Classification Methods For Gene Expression Data Analysis, Elizabeth Garrett-Mayer, Giovanni Parmigiani Dec 2004

Clustering And Classification Methods For Gene Expression Data Analysis, Elizabeth Garrett-Mayer, Giovanni Parmigiani

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

Efficient use of the large data sets generated by gene expression microarray experiments requires computerized data analysis approaches. In this chapter we briefly describe and illustrate two broad families of commonly used data analysis methods: class discovery and class prediction methods. A wide range of alternative approaches for clustering and classification of gene expression data are available. While differences in efficiency do exist, none of the well established approaches is uniformly superior to others. Choosing an approach requires consideration of the goals of the analysis, the background knowledge, and the specific experimental constraints. The quality of an algorithm is important, …

Parental Beliefs Regarding Developmental Benefits Of Childhood Injuries, Terri Lewis, David Dilillo, Lizette Peterson Dec 2004

Parental Beliefs Regarding Developmental Benefits Of Childhood Injuries, Terri Lewis, David Dilillo, Lizette Peterson

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Objective: To assess parental beliefs that minor childhood injuries play a beneficial role in the development of young children.
Methods: Mothers and fathers of 159 children, ages 15 to 40 months, completed the Injury Attitudes Questionnaire (IAQ), designed to assess parental beliefs that children "learn from" and "toughen up" as a result of experiencing minor injuries.
Results: A main effect for parent gender was found such that fathers endorsed stronger beliefs than did mothers regarding the developmental benefits of injuries.
Conclusions: The accuracy of these beliefs as well as their relevance to parental injury-prevention behaviors is discussed.

Pseudorapidity Asymmetry And Centrality Dependence Of Charged Hadron Spectra In D+Au Collisions At √SNn=200 Gev, Star Collaboration, T.D. Gutierrez Dec 2004

Pseudorapidity Asymmetry And Centrality Dependence Of Charged Hadron Spectra In D+Au Collisions At √SNn=200 Gev, Star Collaboration, T.D. Gutierrez

Physics

The pseudorapidity asymmetry and centrality dependence of charged hadron spectra in d+Au collisions at √sNN=200 GeV are presented. The charged particle density at midrapidity, its pseudorapidity asymmetry, and centrality dependence are reasonably reproduced by a multiphase transport model, by HIJING, and by the latest calculations in a saturation model. Ratios of transverse momentum spectra between backward and forward pseudorapidity are above unity for pT below 5GeV ∕ c. The ratio of central to peripheral spectra in d+Au collisions shows enhancement at 2 < pT < 6GeV ∕ c, with a larger effect at backward rapidity than forward rapidity. Our measurements are in qualitative agreement with gluon saturation and in contrast to calculations based on incoherent multiple partonic scatterings.

Episodic Physical Forcing And The Structure Of Phytoplankton Communities In The Coastal Waters Of New Jersey, Mark A. Moline, Shelley M. Blackwell, Robert Chant, Matthew J. Oliver, Trisha Bergmann, Scott Glenn, Oscar M.E. Schofield Dec 2004

Schofield

Biological Sciences

The high variability in physical, biological, and chemical properties in coastal waters have limited our ability to sample the appropriate timescale and space scale to resolve physical forcing of the ecosystem. To improve our understanding, a multiplatform adaptive sampling program at the Long-term Ecosystem Observatory(LEO-15) off the coast of New Jersey examined the relationship between episodic summertime upwelling and downwelling events and the corresponding dynamics in bulk phytoplankton biomass and community structure. Inherent and apparent optical properties were concurrently measured to evaluate the use of optics to improve future sampling coverage in coastal regions. Results indicate peak chlorophyll biomass tracked …

Fixed-Connectivity Membranes, Mark Bowick Dec 2004

Fixed-Connectivity Membranes, Mark Bowick

Physics - All Scholarship

The statistical mechanics of flexible surfaces with internal elasticity and shape fluctuations is summarized. Phantom and self-avoiding isotropic and anisotropic membranes are discussed, with emphasis on the universal negative Poisson ratio common to the low-temperature phase of phantom membranes and all strictly self-avoiding membranes in the absence of attractive interactions. The study of crystalline order on the frozen surface of spherical membranes is also treated.
