Spin Control And The High-Profile Client -- Should The Attorney-Client Privilege Extend To Communications With Public Relations Consultants?, Ann Murphy Sep 2004

Spin Control And The High-Profile Client -- Should The Attorney-Client Privilege Extend To Communications With Public Relations Consultants?, Ann Murphy

ExpressO

The use of public relations consultants in connection with high-profile cases is a relatively new development. Public relations firms are advertising that their advice is necessary when celebrities face criminal charges. It is beyond speculation that such advice may be helpful, but should such advice be protected from disclosure under the attorney-client privilege? Privileges are to be recognized “only within the narrowest limits required by principle.” Public relations consultants transmit information to the public. The communications are not meant to be confidential. These communications do not fall within the purposes or the history of the attorney-client privilege.

Lattice Supersymmetry Via Twisting, Simon Catterall Sep 2004

Lattice Supersymmetry Via Twisting, Simon Catterall

Physics - All Scholarship

We describe how the usual supercharges of extended supersymmetry may be {\it twisted} to produce a BRST-like supercharge Q. The usual supersymmetry algebra is then replaced by a twisted algebra and the action of the twisted theory is shown to be generically Q-exact. In flat space the twisting procedure can be regarded as a change of variables carrying no physical significance. However, the twisted theories can often be transferred to the lattice while preserving the twisted supersymmetry. As an example we construct a lattice version of the two-dimensional supersymmetric sigma model

The ĉ-axis penetration depth as a function of temperature and doping was investigated. It was found that the in the cuprate superconductor YBa 2Cu3O6+x the hole doping in the CuO2 layers was controlled by both oxygen content and the degree of oxygen ordering. The ordering occur at room temperature to tune the hole doping so that the superconducting critical temperature rises from 0 to 20 k. It was also found that the d-wave superconductor survives to very low doping, with no sign of another ordered phase interfering with the nodal quasiparticles.

An Open Architecture For Versatile Machine And Actuator Control, Michael Scott Baxter Sep 2004

An Open Architecture For Versatile Machine And Actuator Control, Michael Scott Baxter

Theses and Dissertations

Automatic control technology increases usability, reliability and productivity in manufacturing, transportation, and climate control. There are many additional areas of modern life that could benefit through automatic control; however, current automation components are too expensive or aren't sufficiently flexible. For example, the cost of current commercial motion control components precludes their use in an average home. This thesis describes an automatic control methodology that is low cost and is flexible enough for a wide variety of control applications. Typical applications could include:

- Home lighting, security and appliances

- Commercial building heating, ventilation and air conditioning

- Industrial machine tool …

State, Be Not Proud: A Retributivist Defense Of The Commutation Of Death Row And The Abolition Of The Death Penalty, Dan Markel

ExpressO

In the aftermath of Governor Ryan's decision last year to commute the sentences of each offender on Illinois' death row, various scholars have claimed that Ryan’s action was a “grave injustice” and, from a retributivist perspective, “an unmitigated moral disaster.” This Article contests that position, showing not only why a commutation of death row is permitted under principles of retributive justice, but also why it might be required. When properly understood, retributive justice, in its commitment to moral accountability and equal liberty, hinges on modesty and dignity in modes of punishment. In this vein, retributivism opposes the apparently ineluctable slide …

Estimating A Survival Distribution With Current Status Data And High-Dimensional Covariates, Mark J. Van Der Laan, Aad Van Der Vaart Sep 2004

Estimating A Survival Distribution With Current Status Data And High-Dimensional Covariates, Mark J. Van Der Laan, Aad Van Der Vaart

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

We consider the inverse problem of estimating a survival distribution when the survival times are only observed to be in one of the intervals of a random bisection of the time axis. We are particularly interested in the case that high-dimensional and/or time-dependent covariates are available, and/or the survival events and censoring times are only conditionally independent given the covariate process. The method of estimation consists of regularizing the survival distribution by taking the primitive function or smoothing, estimating the regularized parameter by using estimating equations, and finally recovering an estimator for the parameter of interest.

Estimation Of Treatment Effects In Randomized Trials With Noncompliance And A Dichotomous Outcome , Mark J. Van Der Laan, Alan E. Hubbard, Nicholas P. Jewell Sep 2004

Estimation Of Treatment Effects In Randomized Trials With Noncompliance And A Dichotomous Outcome , Mark J. Van Der Laan, Alan E. Hubbard, Nicholas P. Jewell

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

We propose a class of estimators of the treatment effect on a dichotomous outcome among the treated subjects within covariate and treatment arm strata in randomized trials with non-compliance. Recent articles by Vansteelandt and Goethebeur (2003) and Robins and Rotnitzky (2004) have presented consistent and asymptotically linear estimators of a causal odds ratio, which rely, beyond correct specification of a model for the causal odds ratio, on a correctly specified model for a potentially high dimensional nuisance parameter. In this article we propose consistent, asymptotically linear and locally efficient estimators of a causal relative risk and a new parameter -- …

Automatic Annotation Of Protein Motif Function With Gene Ontology Terms, Xinghua Lu, Chengxiang Zhai, Vanathi Gopalakrishnan, Bruce G. Buchanan Sep 2004

Automatic Annotation Of Protein Motif Function With Gene Ontology Terms, Xinghua Lu, Chengxiang Zhai, Vanathi Gopalakrishnan, Bruce G. Buchanan

MUSC Faculty Journal Articles

Background: Conserved protein sequence motifs are short stretches of amino acid sequence patterns that potentially encode the function of proteins. Several sequence pattern searching algorithms and programs exist for identifying candidate protein motifs at the whole genome level. However, a much needed and important task is to determine the functions of the newly identified protein motifs. The Gene Ontology (GO) project is an endeavor to annotate the function of genes or protein sequences with terms from a dynamic, controlled vocabulary and these annotations serve well as a knowledge base. Results: This paper presents methods to mine the GO knowledge base …
