Spin Mass Of An Electron Liquid, Zhixin Qian, Giovanni Vignale, D C. Marinescu Sep 2004

Spin Mass Of An Electron Liquid, Zhixin Qian, Giovanni Vignale, D C. Marinescu

Publications

We show that in order to calculate correctly the spin current carried by a quasiparticle in an electron liquid one must use an effective ‘‘spin mass’’ ms that is larger than both the band mass mb, which determines the charge current, and the quasiparticle effective mass m, which determines the heat capacity. We present two independent estimates of the spin mass enhancement, ms=mb, in two- and three-dimensional electron liquids, based on (i) previously calculated values of the Landau parameters and (ii) a recent theory of the dynamical local field factor in the spin channel. Both methods yield a significant spin …

Robust Header Compression (Rohc) In Next-Generation Network Processors, David E. Taylor, Andreas Herkersdorf, Gero Dittmann Sep 2004

Robust Header Compression (Rohc) In Next-Generation Network Processors, David E. Taylor, Andreas Herkersdorf, Gero Dittmann

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Robust Header Compression (ROHC) provides for more efficient use of radio links for wireless communication in a packet switched network. Due to its potential advantages in the wireless access area andthe proliferation of network processors in access infrastructure, there exists a need to understand the resource requirements and architectural implications of implementing ROHC in this environment. We presentan analysis of the primary functional blocks of ROHC and extract the architectural implications on next-generation network processor design for wireless access. The discussion focuses on memory space andbandwidth dimensioning as well as processing resource budgets. We conclude with an examination of resource …

Speech As Conduct: Generally Applicable Laws, Illegal Courses Of Conduct, “Situation-Altering Utterances,” And The Uncharted Zones, Eugene Volokh Sep 2004

Speech As Conduct: Generally Applicable Laws, Illegal Courses Of Conduct, “Situation-Altering Utterances,” And The Uncharted Zones, Eugene Volokh

ExpressO

In many recent free speech controversies -- over crime-facilitating speech, hostile environment harassment, child custody decisions, doctors’ recommending medical marijuana to their patients, pro-jury-nullification advocacy, and more -- defenders of the speech restriction have argued that the speech isn’t really speech, but is instead tantamount to conduct. Sometimes people argue that there’s no First Amendment problem when speech is restricted under a generally applicable law that covers both speech and conduct. Sometimes they argue that speech may be punished if it’s “an integral part of conduct in violation of a valid criminal statute.” Sometimes they argue that the speech should …

Crime-Facilitating Speech, Eugene Volokh

ExpressO

Many recent free speech controversies -- over Patriot Act subpoenas, contract murder manuals, encryption and decryption algorithms, contributory copyright infringement, publication of abortion providers’ names, discussions of gaps in security systems, certain kinds of invasion of privacy lawsuits, online term paper mills, and more -- turn out to be special cases of a general problem: Should there be a new First Amendment exception for speech that gives criminals information that can help them commit crimes? And, if so, how broad or narrow should this exception be?

Surprisingly, scholars have almost entirely ignored these broad questions, and the Supreme Court has …

Small Town, Granville Hicks, Warren F. Broderick Sep 2004

Small Town, Granville Hicks, Warren F. Broderick

Literature

Granville Hicks was one of America's most influential literary and social critics. Along with Malcolm Cowley, F. O. Matthiessen, Max Eastman, Alfred Kazin, and others, he shaped the cultural landscape of 20th-century America.

In 1946 Hicks published Small Town, a portrait of life in the rural crossroads of Grafton, N.Y., where he had moved after being fired from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute for his left-wing political views. In this book, he combines a kind of hand-crafted ethnographic research with personal reflections on the qualities of small town life that were being threatened by spreading cities and suburbs. He eloquently tried to …
