Nicotine Serves As A Feature-Positive Modulator Of Pavlovian Appetitive Conditioning In Rats, M. I. Palmatier, J. L. Peterson, J. L. Wilkinson, Rick A. Bevins

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The present experiments examined whether a nicotine state could set the occasion for a pairing between visual cues and a rewarding outcome in rats. Following nicotine administration, presentation of a conditional stimulus (CS; light-on) was followed by brief access to a sucrose solution. When saline was administered, the same CS was presented but was not followed by any consequence. In Experiment 1, two groups assessed whether rats could acquire this Pavlovian feature-positive discrimination via different training procedures. An anticipatory food-seeking conditioned response (CR) developed during the CS on nicotine sessions but not on saline sessions in both groups. In Experiment …

In Vitro Expression Of Full-Length And Truncated Bovine Respiratory Syncytial Virus G Proteins And Their Antibody Responses In Balb/C Mice, Ryan P. Brady, Christina L. Topliff, Clayton L. Kelling Sep 2004

In Vitro Expression Of Full-Length And Truncated Bovine Respiratory Syncytial Virus G Proteins And Their Antibody Responses In Balb/C Mice, Ryan P. Brady, Christina L. Topliff, Clayton L. Kelling

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) is a primary cause of lower respiratory tract disease in calves. Protection is incomplete following vaccination or natural infection, as re-infections are common. The objectives of this study were to create plasmid DNA constructs encoding the full-length, secreted, or conserved region of the BRSV G glycoprotein, and to compare and evaluate their expression in cell culture and potential to induce antibody responses in BALB/c mice. Transfection of COS-7 cells with plasmid DNA resulted in expression of the BRSV G region from each of the plasmid DNA constructs. Following inoculation of BALB/c mice with plasmid DNA, …

Interoperability And The Need For Intelligent Software: A Historical Perspective, Jens G. Pohl Sep 2004

Interoperability And The Need For Intelligent Software: A Historical Perspective, Jens G. Pohl

Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center

With the objective of defining the interoperability theme of this year’s conference it is the purpose of this paper1 to trace the evolution of intelligent software from data-centric applications that essentially encapsulate their data environment to ontology-based applications with automated reasoning capabilities. The author draws a distinction between human intelligence and component capabilities within a more general definition of intelligence; - a kind of intelligence that can be embedded in computer software. The primary vehicle in the quest for intelligent software has been the gradual recognition of the central role played by data and information, rather than the logic …

Graphical Probabilistic Switching Model: Inference And Characterization For Power Dissipation In Vlsi Circuits, Shiva Shankar Ramani Sep 2004

Graphical Probabilistic Switching Model: Inference And Characterization For Power Dissipation In Vlsi Circuits, Shiva Shankar Ramani

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Power dissipation in a VLSI circuit poses a serious challenge in present and future VLSI design. A switching model for the data dependent behavior of the transistors is essential to model dynamic, load-dependent active power and also leakage power in active mode - the two components of power in a VLSI circuit. A probabilistic Bayesian Network based switching model can explicitly model all spatio-temporal dependency relationships in a combinational circuit, resulting in zero-error estimates. However, the space-time requirements of exact estimation schemes, based on this model, increase with circuit complexity [5, 24]. This work explores a non-simulative, importance sampling based, …

Responsible Corporate Officers And Section 113(C)(6) Of The Clean Air Act: The Dormant Provision With A Useful Function, Peter C. White Sep 2004

Responsible Corporate Officers And Section 113(C)(6) Of The Clean Air Act: The Dormant Provision With A Useful Function, Peter C. White

ExpressO

The flurry of criticism over the addition of the responsible corporate officer provision to the Clean Air Act has focused on its application of strict liability and the mens rea requirement. Dotterweich and Park both applied what appeared to be strict liability for violations of the Food, Drug and Cosmetics Act. The fear was that non-culpable corporate officers would be held strictly liable, face not misdemeanor sanctions but the most severe felony penalties.

This fear was unfounded. No corporate officer was held strictly liable; public welfare offenses evolved as the courts conscientiously applied the “knowing” requirement to environmental statutes and …

A Century Of Subways: Celebrating 100 Years Of New York's Underground Railways, Brian J. Cudahy

History

Brian Cudahy offers a fascinating tribute to the world the subway created. Taking a fresh look at one of the marvels of the 20th century, Cudahy creates a vivid sense of this extraordinary achievement—how the city was transformed once New Yorkers started riding in a hole in the ground.

Effect Of Anharmonicity Of The Strain Energy On Band Offsets In Semiconductor Nanostructures, Olga L. Lazarenkova, Paul Von Allmen, Fabiano Oyafuso, Seungwon Lee, Gerhard Klimeck

Other Nanotechnology Publications

Anharmonicity of the interatomic potential is taken into account for the quantitative simulation of the conduction and valence band offsets for strained semiconductor heterostructures. The anharmonicity leads to a weaker compressive hydrostatic strain than that obtained with the commonly used quasiharmonic approximation of the Keating model. Compared to experiment, inclusion of the anharmonicity in the simulation of strained InAs/GaAs anostructures results in an improvement of the electron band offset computed on an atomistic level by up to 100 meV.

Spectrophotometric System And Method For The Identification And Characterization Of A Particle In A Bodily Fluid, Luis Humberto Garcia-Rubio, Yvette D. Mattley, German Leparc, Manuel Bayona, Andres Cardenas

USF Patents

An infectious disease or disorder in a fluid, such as a mammalian blood sample, is detected by taking a transmission spectrum of a test sample in at least a portion of the ultraviolet visible near-infrared and comparing the spectrum with a standard sample spectrum. From the comparison it is then determined whether the fluid from the test sample contains an infectious disease or disorder, and an identity of the infectious disease or disorder is determined. Spectroscopic and multiwavelength turbidimetry techniques provide a rapid, inexpensive, and convenient means for diagnosis. The comparison and determination steps may be performed visually or by …

Establishing A Cyber Warrior Force, Scott D. Tobin Sep 2004

Establishing A Cyber Warrior Force, Scott D. Tobin

Theses and Dissertations

Cyber Warfare is widely touted to be the next generation of warfare. As America's reliance on automated systems and information technology increases, so too does the potential vulnerability to cyber attack. Nation and non-nation states are developing the capability to wage cyber warfare. Historically, the Air Force and DoD have concentrated their efforts toward defensive network operations. However, a shift in doctrine has shown both the Air Force and DoD acknowledging the potential for Information Warfare. What appears to be lacking is the trained and educated cyber warrior force that will carry out the information operations if needed. This research …
