Has The Law Made Liars Of Us All?, Don Castleman Sep 2004

Has The Law Made Liars Of Us All?, Don Castleman

ExpressO

The premise of this article is that in the law and in the practice of law there are numerous occasions when there appears to be little regard for the truth; that as television has devoted more and more time to programming about law and courts, the public has been exposed to and infected by this attitude toward truth; that society may have abandoned morality in favor of legality and that this may have contributed to the epidemic of corporate and accounting frauds of the past decade.

The article examines cases which demonstrate the lack of regard for the truth in …

Mexico: Topographic Survey And Solutions To Lack Of Water, Paul Kosmerl, Chris Nieport Sep 2004

Mexico: Topographic Survey And Solutions To Lack Of Water, Paul Kosmerl, Chris Nieport

ETHOS Technical Reports

The Marianist mission’s base of operations in the Uxpanapa Valley of Southern Mexico runs a dormitory for students whose families live too far away from the valley’s middle and high schools for them to attend. This dormitory, in addition to other buildings onsite, consumes more water then the current well can provide in the dry season. After surveying the property and carrying out research, a number of appropriate technology solutions were suggested. These included conservation practices, improving existing wells so they will produce more water, digging a new well, rotating between the use of the two wells onsite to allow …

Sex, Shame, And The Law: An Economic Perspective On Megan's Law, Doron Teichman Sep 2004

Sex, Shame, And The Law: An Economic Perspective On Megan's Law, Doron Teichman

Law & Economics Working Papers Archive: 2003-2009

This Article focuses on the question, how should policymakers aiming to minimize the cost of sanctioning utilize legal and nonlegal sanctions when designing a system of criminal sanctions. This model demonstrates that tailoring an efficient regime that combines legal and nonlegal sanctions might be more difficult than previously perceived by law and economics scholars. A specific case study presented in this article is of the current …
