Effect Of Wetting Layers On The Strain And Electronic Structure Of Inas Self-Assembled Quantum Dots, Seungwon Lee, Olga L. Lazarenkova, Paul Von Allmen, Fabiano Oyafuso, Gerhard Klimeck Sep 2004

Effect Of Wetting Layers On The Strain And Electronic Structure Of Inas Self-Assembled Quantum Dots, Seungwon Lee, Olga L. Lazarenkova, Paul Von Allmen, Fabiano Oyafuso, Gerhard Klimeck

Other Nanotechnology Publications

The effect of wetting layers on the strain and electronic structure of InAs self-assembled quantum dots grown on GaAs is investigated with an atomistic valence-force-field model and an empirical tight-binding model. By comparing a dot with and without a wetting layer, we find that the inclusion of the wetting layer weakens the strain inside the dot by only 1% relative change, while it reduces the energy gap between a confined electron and hole level by as much as 10%. The small change in the strain distribution indicates that strain relaxes only little through the thin wetting layer. The large reduction …

Quantum Interferometric Sensors, Leo D. Didomenico, Hwang Lee, Pieter Kok, Jonathan P. Dowling Sep 2004

Quantum Interferometric Sensors, Leo D. Didomenico, Hwang Lee, Pieter Kok, Jonathan P. Dowling

Faculty Publications

Quantum entanglement has the potential to revolutionize the entire field of interferometric sensing by providing many orders of magnitude improvement in interferometer sensitivity. The quantum entangled particle interferometer approach is very general and applies to many types of interferometers. In particular, without nonlocal entanglement, a generic classical interferometer has a statistical-sampling shot-noise limited sensitivity that scales like 1/√N, where N is the number of particles passing through the interferometer per unit time. However, if carefully prepared quantum correlations are engineered between the particles, then the interferometer sensitivity improves by a factor of √N to scale like 1/N, which is the …

Perception Of Meaning And Usage Motivations Of Emoticons Among Americans And Chinese Users, Yujiao Wang Sep 2004

Perception Of Meaning And Usage Motivations Of Emoticons Among Americans And Chinese Users, Yujiao Wang

Theses

Do people of different cultures agree on the meaning and use of emoticons? This study addresses this question from an inter-cultural perspective and explores the use of emoticons in the American and Chinese Computer-mediated communication (CMC) communities. The research indicates that both the Americans and Chinese participants use emoticons for entertaining, informational and social interaction motivations but the Americans are more likely to use emoticons for information motivations than the Chinese and the Chinese participants are more likely to use emoticons for social interactions than the Americans participants. The results correspond to the cultural differences between the two countries in …

Johns (b. 1922- d. 2007) and his wife, Martha Mauney Johns, are both graduates of Furman University. After serving as president for eight years at Stetson University in DeLand, Florida, Dr. Johns returned to his alma mater to serve as the president of Furman University. In this interview, Dr. and Mrs. Johns discuss their time as Furman students, his time in Word War II, how he became Furman president, and his time as president. They share memories of Dr. Delbert …

Discrimination In Sentencing On The Basis Of Afro-Centric Features, William T. Pizzi, Irene V. Blair, Charles M. Judd Sep 2004

Discrimination In Sentencing On The Basis Of Afro-Centric Features, William T. Pizzi, Irene V. Blair, Charles M. Judd

ExpressO

For a long time, social scientists have worried about possible racial discrimination in sentencing in the United States. With a prison population that exceeds two million inmates of whom approximately 48% are African American, the worry over the fairness of the sentencing process is understandable. This article is not about discrimination between racial categories as such, but about a related form of discrimination, namely, discrimination on the basis of a person’s Afro-centric features. Section I of the article describes a line of social science research that shows that a person’s Afro-centric features have a strong biasing effect on judgment such …

Effect Of Misreported Family History On Mendelian Mutation Prediction Models, Hormuzd A. Katki Sep 2004

Effect Of Misreported Family History On Mendelian Mutation Prediction Models, Hormuzd A. Katki

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

People with familial history of disease often consult with genetic counselors about their chance of carrying mutations that increase disease risk. To aid them, genetic counselors use Mendelian models that predict whether the person carries deleterious mutations based on their reported family history. Such models rely on accurate reporting of each member's diagnosis and age of diagnosis, but this information may be inaccurate. Commonly encountered errors in family history can significantly distort predictions, and thus can alter the clinical management of people undergoing counseling, screening, or genetic testing. We derive general results about the distortion in the carrier probability estimate …

Applications Of Decision And Utility Theory In Multi-Agent Systems, Xin Li, Leen-Kiat Soh Sep 2004

Applications Of Decision And Utility Theory In Multi-Agent Systems, Xin Li, Leen-Kiat Soh

School of Computing: Technical Reports

This report reviews the applications of decision-related theories (decision theory, utility theory, probability theory, and game theory) in various aspects of multi-agent systems. In recent years, multi-agent systems (MASs) have become a highly active research area as multi-agent systems have a wide range of applications. However, most of real-world environments are very complex and of uncertainty. An agent’s knowledge about the world is rather incomplete and uncertain. The actions of the agent are non-deterministic with a range of possible outcomes. The agent may have many desires that conflict each other. The agent also needs to know about other agents and …
