The primary scientific mission of the Black Hole Finder Probe (BHFP), part of the NASA Beyond Einstein program, is to survey the local Universe for black holes over a wide range of mass and accretion rate. One approach to such a survey is a hard X-ray coded-aperture imaging mission operating in the 10-600 keV energy band, a spectral range that is considered to be especially useful in the detection of black hole sources. The development of new inorganic scintillator materials provides improved performance (for example, with regards to energy resolution and timing) that is well suited to the BHFP science …

The MEGA mission would enable a sensitive all-sky survey of the medium-energy ?-ray sky (0.3-50 MeV). This mission will bridge the huge sensitivity gap between the COMPTEL and OSSE experiments on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, the SPI and IBIS instruments on INTEGRAL and the visionary ACT mission. It will, among other things, serve to compile a much larger catalog of sources in this energy range, perform far deeper searches for supernovae, better measure the galactic continuum emission as well as identify the components of the cosmic diffuse emission. The large field of view will allow MEGA to continuously monitor …

We present a time-resolved spectrophotometric study of the optical variability in the quiescent soft X-ray transient A0620-00. Superimposed on the double-humped continuum light curve are the well-known flare events, which last tens of minutes. Some of the flare events that appear in the continuum light curve are also present in the emission-line light curves. From the Balmer line flux and variations, we find that the persistent emission is optically thin. During the flare event at phase 1.15 the Balmer decrement dropped, suggesting either a significant increase in temperature or that the flares are optically thicker than the continuum. The data …

Vision-Based Human Directed Robot Guidance, Richard B. Arthur
Vision-Based Human Directed Robot Guidance, Richard B. Arthur
Theses and Dissertations
This paper describes methods to track a user-defined point in the vision of a robot as it drives forward. This tracking allows a robot to keep itself directed at that point while driving so that it can get to that user-defined point. I develop and present two new multi-scale algorithms for tracking arbitrary points between two frames of video, as well as through a video sequence. The multi-scale algorithms do not use the traditional pyramid image, but instead use a data structure called an integral image (also known as a summed area table). The first algorithm uses edge-detection to track …

Photon And Neutral Pion Production In Au+Au Collisions At √SNn=130 Gev, Star Collaboration, T.D. Gutierrez
Photon And Neutral Pion Production In Au+Au Collisions At √SNn=130 Gev, Star Collaboration, T.D. Gutierrez
Physics
We report inclusive photon measurements about midrapidity (∣y∣<0.5) from 197Au+197Au collisions at √sNN=130 GeV at RHIC. Photon pair conversions were reconstructed from electron and positron tracks measured with the Time Projection Chamber (TPC) of the STAR experiment. With this method, an energy resolution of ΔE ∕ E≈2% at 0.5GeV has been achieved. Reconstructed photons have also been used to measure the transverse momentum (pt) spectra of π0mesons about midrapidity (∣y∣<1) via the π0→γγ decay channel. The fractional contribution of the π0→γγ decay to the inclusive photon spectrum decreases by 20%±5% between pt …1)>0.5)>
The Generation Of A Digital Phantom For Testing Of Digitally Reconstructed Radiographs, Nicholas Andrew, Mason
The Generation Of A Digital Phantom For Testing Of Digitally Reconstructed Radiographs, Nicholas Andrew, Mason
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The construction of phantoms for testing imaging parameters has been well documented in the literature. As computers have been introduced into the different areas of medicine, they have become more and more relied upon to replace conventional technologies. One specific example is that of plane film X-rays. Digitally Reconstructed Radiographs (DRR's) are computer generated images that are generated from a 3 D volume of data, such as CT or MRI axial scans, and can be used in place of conventional X rays. The computer can generate a DRR image for any position, orientation and magnification, and geometries not physically possible …

We find that the globular cluster (GC) systems of the Milky Way and of our neighboring spiral galaxy, M31, comprise two distinct entities, differing in three respects. First, M31 has a set of young GCs, ranging in age from a few times 10 2 Myr to 5 Gyr old, as well as old GCs. No such very young GCs are known in the Milky Way. Second, we confirm that the oldest M31 GCs have much higher nitrogen abundances than do Galactic GCs at equivalent metallicities, while carbon abundances appear normal for the GCs in both galaxies. Third, Morrison and coworkers …

Defining Dicta, Michael Abramowicz, Maxwell Stearns
Defining Dicta, Michael Abramowicz, Maxwell Stearns
ExpressO
The doctrine of stare decisis applies only to holdings of past cases, but scholars and courts have paid far more attention to stare decisis doctrine than to the distinction between holding and dicta, particularly in recent years. The lack of attention that the distinction receives may reflect a sense among legal analysts that they know dicta when they see it, but the problem is considerably more analytically complex than it may at first appear. In this Article, Professors Abramowicz and Stearns identify a number of structural problems that may affect whether statements in judicial opinions should be classified as holding …
