When Flyspecks Matter—Part Ii, K.K. Duvivier

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

Most of my columns advise legal writers; this one also aims to change the perspective of a legal reader. The September 2004 column addressed some of the issues raised by a British best- seller on punctuation called Eats, Shoots & Leaves. The author, Lynne Truss, attempts to make a case for "sticklers" who "refuse to patronize any shop with checkouts for 'eight items or less'" or who have urges to "shin up ladders at dead of night with an apostrophe-shaped stencil and a tin of paint" to correct advertisements. To her, punctuation errors are "signs of ignorance and indifference."

Content Validity Of The Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium's (Isllc) Standards For School Leaders: To What Extent Do Isllc Skill Indicators Describe School Leaders' Instructional Leadership Work?, Jane Clark Lindle, Nancy Stalion, Lu Young Nov 2004

Content Validity Of The Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium's (Isllc) Standards For School Leaders: To What Extent Do Isllc Skill Indicators Describe School Leaders' Instructional Leadership Work?, Jane Clark Lindle, Nancy Stalion, Lu Young

Publications

Most validity studies of ISLLC standards and indicators rely heavily on focus groups and perceptual surveys. This study included self-report and observational data on principals’ use of time. A content analysis tested ISLLC’s descriptions of instructional leadership with a related set of Kentucky’s Standards and Indicators for School Improvement (SISI) as well as across the observational job analyses of two sets of principals: (a) five elementary and secondary principals in a typical rural district and (b) five matched for school characteristics from high performing schools on Kentucky’s assessment system. Results reinforce early studies revealing the intense and fragmented nature of …

Interpreting Workplace Learning In Terms Of Discourse And Community Of Practice, Adrian K. Ho Nov 2004

Interpreting Workplace Learning In Terms Of Discourse And Community Of Practice, Adrian K. Ho

Western Libraries Publications

Based on the ethnographic data collected from the workplace of an academic library, I argue that workplace learning (WL) is a situated socio-cognitive process. It is expedited by knowledge management (KM), which is a collective effort to generate, share, and institutionalize work-related knowledge. KM is inherent in the face-to-face conversational interactions embedded in planned formal training, planned informal sharing, and spontaneous informal learning. When face-to-face interaction is not possible, KM is accomplished through textualization. It helps the members of the workplace acquire new work-related knowledge and integrate it to their common, contextualized knowledge base. The contents of the knowledge base …

The Use Of Increased Clinical Opportunities For Student Nurses At Two Different Intervals Within The Undergraduate Nursing Curriculum, Jerrilee Lamar

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the effects of two hospital-based clinical programs for student nurses on six dimensions of nursing. The two programs included a I 0-week student nurse summer extern program which was offered to nursing students who had completed a minimum of two clinical semesters of nursing school. The second program, a 12-week student nurse intern program, was offered to student nurses during their last semester of nursing school prior to eligibility for the national registered nurse licensure exam. The Schwirian Six-Dimension Scale of Nursing was used as a pretest and posttest self-assessment at the beginning and endings of each …

Screw Dislocation Interacting With Interfacial Edge-Cracks In Piezoelectric Bimaterial Strips, Xiangfa Wu, Yuris A. Dzenis, Bradley D. Rinschen Nov 2004

Screw Dislocation Interacting With Interfacial Edge-Cracks In Piezoelectric Bimaterial Strips, Xiangfa Wu, Yuris A. Dzenis, Bradley D. Rinschen

Department of Engineering Mechanics: Faculty Publications

This paper is concerned with the interaction between an interfacial edge-crack and a screw dislocation under out-of-plane mechanical and in-plane electric loading in a piezoelectric bimaterial strip. In addition to a discontinuous electric potential across the slip plane, the dislocation is subjected to a line-force and a line-charge at the core. Under the framework of linear piezoelectricity, the out-of-plane displacement and in-plane electric potentials are constructed in closed-form by means of conformal mapping technique and the known solution for screw dislocation in cracked piezoelectric bimaterial. The intensity factors (IFs) and energy release rate (ERR) are derived explicitly.

University Students From Four Ethnopolitical Conflict Zones: An Exploratory Study Of Perceptions Of Self And Country, Sean Byrne, Colleen Mcleod, Brian Polkinghorn Nov 2004

University Students From Four Ethnopolitical Conflict Zones: An Exploratory Study Of Perceptions Of Self And Country, Sean Byrne, Colleen Mcleod, Brian Polkinghorn

Peace and Conflict Studies

This exploratory comparative case study examines hopes and fears for self and country of 300 students attending university in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Northern Ireland, South Africa, and Sri Lanka. Students report living in stressful societies where ethno political and state violence were the norm. The results of this qualitative study indicate that while the young people are optimistic about their life changes, they are concerned that the conflicts could re-ignite and spiral out of control. In particular, the students’ images indicate the importance of the self-society relationship and that these young adults relish the challenge of being productive citizens in their post-conflict …

Conflict-Free Conflict Resolution Process And Method, Roshan Danesh, Hossain Danesh

Peace and Conflict Studies

Conflict-free Conflict Resolution (CFCR) is an emerging theory and practice of conflict resolution. Building upon traditions of innovation within the field of dispute resolution, as well as insights from a variety of disciplines including conflict studies, peace studies and developmental psychology, CFCR aims to be a unity-centered practice. Both the method and outcomes of CFCR are attempts to reflect the possibilities of helping to create conditions of unity between individuals and communities. The purpose of this article is primarily descriptive, aiming to give an initial overview of CFCR as a practice. This description is rooted in the initial applications of …
