A close analysis of nature imagery within Toni Morrison's two works, Love and Sula, reveals the types of connections this august writer creates between the natural sphere and the human realm. Such a comparative study of these two works is fitting because it sheds light on the larger context in which naturalized human love is placed and creatively celebrated in both an early and late Morrison novel. In particular, examining nature imagery divulges that both Heed and Christine's and Nel and Sula's innate friendships seems to represent a natural force. We see that Morrison personifies trees and water in order …

Uniqueness Theorems In Bioluminescence Tomography, Ge Wang, Yi Li, Ming Jiang
Uniqueness Theorems In Bioluminescence Tomography, Ge Wang, Yi Li, Ming Jiang
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications
Motivated by bioluminescent imaging needs for studies on gene therapy and other applications in the mouse models, a bioluminescence tomography (BLT) system is being developed in the University of Iowa. While the forward imaging model is described by the well-known diffusion equation, the inverse problem is to recover an internal bioluminescent source distribution subject to Cauchy data. Our primary goal in this paper is to establish the solution uniqueness for BLT under practical constraints despite the ill-posedness of the inverse problem in the general case. After a review on the inverse source literature, we demonstrate that in the general case …
Closed Material Cycles And Organic Solvent Recovery, Tim De Jong
Closed Material Cycles And Organic Solvent Recovery, Tim De Jong
Theses
A survey was conducted of the pharmaceutical sector in Ireland to establish organic solvent usage, recovery and treatment practices. The eleven companies covered by the survey, which included several of the worlds largest multinational companies, consumed in the region of 122,000 tonnes of organic solvent in 2002. Approximately 53,000 tonnes was recovered on-site while 69,000 tonnes of virgin solvent was brought on-site to replace that which was lost through wastewater treatment, incineration, fugitive emissions and off-site treatment or reuse. The total quantity of virgin solvent consumed by the eleven companies accounted for 75.4 % of organic solvent imports to Ireland. …
Canada’S ‘Forgotten Forests’: Or, How Ottawa Is Failing Local Communities And The World In Peri-Urban Forest Protection, Stepan Wood
Articles & Book Chapters
The forests found in Canada's rapidly expanding urban fringes have been decimated by agricultural settlement and urban growth, yet they have been largely overlooked in Canadian forest policy debates. While these "peri-urban" forests fall mainly under provincial jurisdiction, this paper argues that the federal government has the authority and opportunity to negotiate a more active role for itself in this area. The paper assesses the federal government's track record of international commitments and domestic action on peri-urban forests, canvassing developments in six policy areas: general principles; forest conservation and management; biodiversity and endangered species; land securement and ecological gifts; climate …
Santa Clara Pueblo V. Martinez: Twenty-Five Years Of Disparate Cultural Visions An Essay Introducing The Case For Re-Argument Before The American Indian Nations Supreme Court, Gloria Valencia-Weber
Santa Clara Pueblo V. Martinez: Twenty-Five Years Of Disparate Cultural Visions An Essay Introducing The Case For Re-Argument Before The American Indian Nations Supreme Court, Gloria Valencia-Weber
Faculty Scholarship
Santa Clara Pueblo v. Martinez nakedly presents a conflict between the individual rights norm of equality and the communal or collective political right of the first sovereigns within U.S. borders. The conflict underlies the discourse in law scholarship and reflects disparate cultural visions between mainstream society and American Indians. In Indian law the decision has saliency with positive and negative force injected into different arenas besides equal protection, gender, and membership qualifications. It is a major fortification for the federally recognized tribal sovereigns to exclude external law and forums, the federal law and courts, in how tribes exercise self-government. The …
Minimum Wages, Inequality, And Globalization, T. H. Gindling, Katherine Terrell
Minimum Wages, Inequality, And Globalization, T. H. Gindling, Katherine Terrell
Michigan Journal of International Law
The authors argue in this paper that the institution of the minimum wage is also an important factor in explaining changes in earnings inequality in Costa Rica, and that it can be an important factor in many developing countries. This study is a departure from the literature on institutions and development, which tends to analyze the impact of a more generally defined set of institutions using data on a number of countries. In this paper the authors analyze detailed changes in one institution in one country, using panel data over time. They argue that it is important to understand how …

Extent And Composition Of Open Coastal Sandplain Plant Communities Of The Cape Cod National Seashore, Evan L. Gwilliam
Extent And Composition Of Open Coastal Sandplain Plant Communities Of The Cape Cod National Seashore, Evan L. Gwilliam
Open Access Master's Theses
Coastal sandplain heathlands and grasslands of the northeastern United States are globally rare habitat types that support a unique assemblage of plants and animals. This habitat is rapidly disappearing due to plant succession following cessation of land use, and coastal processes. I used interpretation of historical maps, aerial photography, GIS, and analysis of field data to examine vegetation dynamics and the impact of historic land use and coastal processes on the current extent and composition of coastal sandplain plant communities found within the Cape Cod National Seashore (CCNS). Currently, one third (244 ha) of the coastal heathland and grassland habitat …

Assessment Of Thermal Infrared Detection Rates Using White-Tailed Deer Surrogates, Robert E. Kissell Jr., Philip A. Tappe
Assessment Of Thermal Infrared Detection Rates Using White-Tailed Deer Surrogates, Robert E. Kissell Jr., Philip A. Tappe
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
As thermal infrared imaging technology has improved, it has increasingly been used for estimating sizes of wildlife populations. The greatest bias of thermal infrared surveys is the lack of known detection rates to adjust for visibility bias. As with visual surveys, a measure of detection rate is needed to provide unbiased estimates. We assessed the detection rate of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) using a thermal infrared sensor (1.2 - 5.9 /an) from an aerial platform. Similar characteristics between thermal signatures of people and deer allowed us to use people in a reclined or horizontal position as surrogates for deer. We …

Distribution, Natural History Aspects, And Status Of The Arkansas Endemic Crayfish, Fallicambarus Harpi Hobbs And Robinson, 1985, Henry W. Robison, Betty G. Crump
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Recent fieldwork in west central Arkansas has revealed the Arkansas endemic crayfish, Fallicambarus harpi Hobbs and Robison, to be more abundant than formerly believed. New localities and county records are provided in addition to information on the habitat preferences, sex ratio, color variation, reproductive biology, and conservation status of this burrowing crayfish.
Human Rabies Post-Exposure Treatment In Arkansas, 1994-2000, D. Blake Sasse
Human Rabies Post-Exposure Treatment In Arkansas, 1994-2000, D. Blake Sasse
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
The Arkansas Department of Health recorded 118 incidents where humans in Arkansas were treated following exposure to confirmed rabid animals from 1994-2000. Domestic species accounted for 64% of incidents and 76% of total human exposures with the ratio of human exposures per rabid animal 17 times higher for domestic animals than wild animals. Records of 218 cases of human exposure to potentially rabid wild animals during this period were also examined to determine method of contact. While 72% of cases involving raccoons (Procyon lotor), skunks (Mephitis mephitis and Spilogale putorius), and foxes (Urocyon cinereoargenteus and Vulpes vulpes) were initiated by …

Gender And Empowerment: Contemporary Lakota Women Of Rosebud, Christina G. Mello
Gender And Empowerment: Contemporary Lakota Women Of Rosebud, Christina G. Mello
McNair Scholars Journal
Western-European stereotypes still permeate Plains Indian culture suggesting that women were passive and subjugated while men were dominant warriors. This research challenges those stereotypes through exploration of origin and spirituality accounts, kinship organization, historical impact, contemporary and traditional issues, and through first hand ethnographic research of the Sicangu Nation of Lakota people in regards to gender roles. Using feminist critique and reflexive theoretical approaches, information was collected through participant observation and interviews with Sicangu people in 2004. By focusing on how Lakota women have empowered themselves, this research illustrates how women were and continue to be respected, influential members of …
