Impact Of Static Flexion Duration On The Development Of A Neuromuscular Disorder Of The Lumbar Spine, Rebecca Victoria Labry
Impact Of Static Flexion Duration On The Development Of A Neuromuscular Disorder Of The Lumbar Spine, Rebecca Victoria Labry
LSU Master's Theses
Many occupational groups work under adverse conditions in which their spinal columns are fully flexed under load for substantial periods of time. This study was designed to determine the response of the lumbar spine to a static load of a substantial duration under a range of load magnitudes. The impact of static loads of 20, 40 and 60N were applied over 30 min flexion, 10 min rest, and 30 min flexion (for a total of one hour exposure) followed by a 7 h rest. Lumbar viscoelastic creep (laxity) and reflex electromyographic (EMG) activity were monitored over both flexion periods and …

In Vitro Evaluation Of The Securos Cranial Cruciate Ligament Repair System And Fluorocarbon Leader Line For Use As Lateral Fabella-Tibial Sutures, Max Nielsen Banwell
LSU Master's Theses
Cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) rupture is a common injury in the dog and major cause of degenerative joint disease. The pathophysiology of CCL rupture in the dog is well described. Osteoarthritis secondary to CCL rupture causes severe pain and lameness. There are many surgical techniques accepted for dogs with CCL rupture. A commonly performed technique is an extracapsular repair with a lateral fabella-tibial suture (LFS) using large diameter nylon leader line (NLL). Mechanical demands placed upon the LFS are high requiring the material used be able to withstand a high amount of force, undergo minimal elongation, and have a high …

Development And Integration Of New Processes Consuming Carbon Dioxide In Multi-Plant Chemical Production Complexes, Sudheer Indala
LSU Master's Theses
New, energy-efficient and environmentally acceptable, catalytic processes have been identified that can use excess high purity CO2 as a raw material from the sources available in a chemical production complex. The chemical complex in the lower Mississippi River Corridor has been used to show how these new plants can be integrated into this existing infrastructure using the Chemical Complex and Cogeneration Analysis System. Eighty six published articles of laboratory and pilot plant experiments were reviewed that describe new methods and catalysts to use CO2 for producing commercially important products. Reactions have been categorized as hydrogenation reactions; hydrocarbon synthesis …
Storytelling From The Margins: The Healing Narratives Of J. California Cooper, Cynthia Downing Bryant
Storytelling From The Margins: The Healing Narratives Of J. California Cooper, Cynthia Downing Bryant
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This study examines the therapeutic qualities of selected short stories and novels by contemporary African American woman writer, J. California Cooper. Specifically, I examine the manner in which Cooper's texts can be appreciated as "healing narratives." Healing narratives, as defined in this study, are those texts in which the author consciously creates fictitious representations of reality, while employing the concept of hope as a central and guiding factor. Those aspects of the narrative that have the ability to heal or "lay hands on" a reader vary because the effectiveness of the story depends upon how well the reader can identify …

Development Of Chicken Polyclonal And Mouse Monoclonal-Based Enyzyme Immunoassays For The Detection Of Β-Cyclocitral In Catfish Pond Water, Cate Nakaweesa Munene
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The Catfish industry faces a problem of off-flavors due to odorous compounds produced by cyanobacteria and blue-green algae. Beta-Cyclocitral imparts a hay-woody odor to pond water and fish tissues. At present there are no reliable pond treatment methods available to control these off-flavors. To monitor the levels of this compound for quality control, rapid, sensitive and inexpensive methods are needed. The major goal of this study was to develop enzyme-linked immunoflow assays based on monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies that are specific and sensitive enough to detect beta-cyclocitral in catfish pond water. Beta-Cyclocitral-PPD conjugate was prepared and used to immunize two …
Studies Of Ergot Alkaloid Biosynthesis Genes In Clavicipitaceous Fungi, Caroline Machado
Studies Of Ergot Alkaloid Biosynthesis Genes In Clavicipitaceous Fungi, Caroline Machado
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Neotyphodium species, endophytic fungi associated with cool-season grasses, enhance host fitness and stress tolerance, but also produce biologically active alkaloids including ergot alkaloids associated with fescue toxicosis in grazing animals. One approach to reduce fescue toxicosis is to manipulate genes in the ergot alkaloid pathway. The gene, dmaW, encoding the first pathway-specific step in ergot alkaloid biosynthesis, was cloned previously from Claviceps spp. and its function was demonstrated by expression in yeast. Putative homologs have been cloned from Neotyphodium coenophialum (from tall fescue) and Neotyphodium sp. Lp1 (from perennial ryegrass). In order to confirm the function of dmaW in ergot …

Dissecting The Functions Of Carmovirus And Tombusvirus Replicase Proteins, Kottampatty Rajendran
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Replication of genetic material is the most important and central process during the viral life cycle. Most RNA viruses assign one or more proteins translated from their own genome for replicating genomic RNAs. Understanding the various biochemical activities of these replication proteins is the aim of this dissertation research. The replicase proteins of Turnip crinkle virus (TCV) and Tomato bushy stunt virus (TBSV) were selected for this study. Both viruses have small, messenger-sense, single-stranded RNA genomes. Replicase proteins p28/p88 of TCV and p33/p92 of TBSV- were expressed and purified from E. coli as N-terminal fusions to maltose binding protein. In …
Microsatellite Instability In Squamous Cell Carcinoma And Lichen Sclerosus Of The Vulva, Sidney Joseph Marlborough
Microsatellite Instability In Squamous Cell Carcinoma And Lichen Sclerosus Of The Vulva, Sidney Joseph Marlborough
LSU Master's Theses
The usefulness of detecting genomic instability in the form of microsatellite instability (MSI) has been examined in a number of cancers. Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and adjacent normal and lichen sclerosis (LS) samples were taken from patients with radical vulvectomies. Vulvar SCC samples were compared with adjacent normal samples using four oligonucleotide markers (BAT-25, BAT-26, D10S208 and D10S587) found to be informative with other carcinomas. Using polymerase chain reaction techniques, 30 vulvar SCC DNA samples were examined for MSI. BAT-26 displayed the highest level of MSI and was considered to be the most sensitive marker in studying vulvar SCC. There …

Comparison Studies Of The Mechanistic Formation Of Polyhalogentaed Dibenzo-P-Dioxins And Furans From The Thermal Degradation Of 2-Bromophenol And 2-Chlorophenol, Catherine Spearing Evans
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Emissions of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans (PCDD/Fs) and polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans (PBDD/Fs) from hazardous waste incinerators, and many other sources for combustion have been considered environmentally hazardous and a major health threat. Recently, a growing number of materials containing brominated hydrocarbons, commonly used flame retardants, have been disposed in municipal and hazardous waste incinerators. This results in the increased potential for formation of PBDD/Fs and other hazardous combustion by-products. In contrast to chlorinated hydrocarbons, the reactions of brominated hydrocarbons have been studied only minimally. In fact, studies have shown that brominated phenols form higher yields of PBDD/Fs than the …

Dna Binding Properties Of Histone-Like Protein Hu From Deinoccus Radiodurans Suggest Involvement In Dna Recombination, Sharmistha Ghosh
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The Histone-like protein HU is ubiquitous in eubacteria. Usually with a length of ~90 amino acids, they are predominantly homodimeric, with sequence and structural homology. Escherichia coli HU is involved in DNA repair and recombination. The crystal structure of Anabaena HU shows that it binds DNA with prolines intercalating into the DNA backbone, introducing two kinks at a spacing of 9 bp and bending the DNA through a variable angle of 105-140°. Deinococcus radiodurans is a gram positive mesophile, capable of reconstituting its genome from 1000-2000 double strand breaks incurred due to exposure to environmental extremes. In the first study, …
Effects Of Redox Potential And Ph On The Fate Of Nitroglycerin In A Surface And Aquifer Soil, Sally Yost
Effects Of Redox Potential And Ph On The Fate Of Nitroglycerin In A Surface And Aquifer Soil, Sally Yost
LSU Master's Theses
Nitroglycerin, used in propellant formulations and ignition cartridges in military weapons, has been found as a surface soil contaminant on military installations. Concerns have arisen since the fate and mobility of nitroglycerin is not understood in these natural environments. The objective of this study was to determine the fate of nitroglycerin in natural field soils. Nitroglycerin degradation was examined using a surface soil and an aquifer soil under aerobic and anaerobic conditions at three pH levels. Studies were also performed to determine the influence of a supplemental carbon source on degradation. Radiolabeled 14C-nitroglycerin was used to trace the partitioning between …
Evaluation Of Rough Brucella Strains As Vaccines For Brucellosis And Pseudorabies In Swine, Lorraine Harrow Molin
Evaluation Of Rough Brucella Strains As Vaccines For Brucellosis And Pseudorabies In Swine, Lorraine Harrow Molin
LSU Master's Theses
Brucellosis and pseudorabies lead to abortion in pregnant sows and are perpetuated by feral swine reservoirs. A multivalent oral vaccine for these diseases would improve vaccination and eradication programs worldwide. Previous studies have shown that the rough attenuated Brucella strains RB51 and VTRS1, when administered subcutaneously to swine, stimulate host immune responses, transiently colonize tissues, and provide partial protection against virulent B. suis infection in pregnant sows. A plasmid encoding for the pseudorabies virus glycoprotein D (PRV gD) has also been added to these strains as part of this project. This study evaluates the use of these strains as oral …
The Effects Of Nutrient Enrichment On The Decomposition Of Belowground Organic Matter In A Sagittaria Lancifolia - Dominated Oligohaline Marsh, Kristen Raye Laursen
The Effects Of Nutrient Enrichment On The Decomposition Of Belowground Organic Matter In A Sagittaria Lancifolia - Dominated Oligohaline Marsh, Kristen Raye Laursen
LSU Master's Theses
Wetlands improve water quality through sedimentation and the uptake of excess nutrients. As human population increases in the coastal zone, wetlands receive greater nutrient inputs. These additional nutrients may accelerate microbial activity, leading to faster decomposition rates. This decomposition could exceed belowground organic matter production, resulting in a net reduction in soil organic matter accumulation and vertical marsh accretion. The effects of nutrient enrichment on belowground organic matter decomposition in subtropical marshes have received little attention. As such, this research examined the effects of four levels of nitrogen combined with two levels of phosphorus enrichment on belowground decomposition through the …
Accelerating The Transition To A Sustainable Society, Christopher Brian Bennett
Accelerating The Transition To A Sustainable Society, Christopher Brian Bennett
LSU Master's Theses
As human populations increase, available land and resources decrease, and we begin to better understand the impacts of human activity on the environment, a strategy for human development that meets both the needs of society and the environment is being increasingly called upon. This movement has come to be known as sustainability. While this term is prevalent in the design and planning communities, it is important that this concept be brought to the attention of the general public, whom will ultimately decide the success or failure of this scheme. The question then is how to begin implementation of sustainable practices, …

Seasonal Occurrence Of Phyllophaga Species And Biological Studies Of Phyllophage Ephilida (Say) On Sweet Potato, Ipomoea Batatas (L) Lam, In Louisiana, Aboubacar Diagne
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The biology of Phyllophaga ephilida (Say) was studied in Louisiana with both laboratory and field experiments from 1998 through 2003. The seasonal occurrence of common adult Phyllophaga species in sweet potato growing areas was surveyed with blacklight traps. P. ephilida and P. crinita (Burmeister) were the most common species at all locations. The attractiveness of seven methyl esters of L-isoleucine and L-valine blends to P. ephilida males was evaluated in sweet potato fields in 1999 and 2000. The 100% methyl ester of L-isoleucine was significantly more attractive than all other blend ratios that were tested. The life cycle of P. …
Optimization Of Agrobacterium Mediated Cotton Transformation Using Shoot Apices Explants And Quantitative Trait Loci Analysis Of Yield And Yield Component Traits In Upland Cotton (Gossypium Hirsutum), Baogong Jiang
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Cotton (Gossypium spp) is an important world crop. Although great improvements have been achieved through traditional breeding methods, cotton breeders are facing many problems, i.e., narrow genetic base, inability to use alien genes and difficulty in breaking gene linkages. Genetic transformations and quantitative trait loci (QTL) analyses are main tools used by breeders to overcome these problems. In this dissertation, an optimized cotton regeneration system from shoot apices was developed. The regeneration rate was increased to 85% by combining rooting induction, indole acetic acid (IAA) shock and graft techniques. The regeneration system is genotype-independent and the whole process takes 12 …
Identification And Characterization Of Socs44a In Drosophila, Jason Scott Rawlings
Identification And Characterization Of Socs44a In Drosophila, Jason Scott Rawlings
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
The JAK/STAT pathway is but one of the signal transduction cascades responsible for proper development and homeostasis. Gain-of-function mutations of pathway components are causative agents of several leukemias, highlighting the necessity for proper regulation of signal transduction. Drosophila presents an attractive model to study JAK/STAT signaling because mutations in the pathway behave in an analogous manner. Furthermore, the Drosophila cascade is much simpler as only one of each component required for activation has been characterized; whereas in mammals, there are many ligands, receptors, 4 JAKs and 7 STATs.Suppressors of Cytokine Signaling (SOCS) are one family of molecules which regulate JAK/STAT …
My Maiden Cowboy Names: Poems, Victoria Brockmeier
My Maiden Cowboy Names: Poems, Victoria Brockmeier
LSU Master's Theses
On the title: for a dichotomy of vulnerability and resistance; for self as plural and/or changeable; for acts of claiming. To hint at tone, setting, and content. On sound: to shape a poem's mood, and because these pieces should leave your mouth a little tired if you read them out loud. On lineation: to highlight the near-misses in language-ambiguities, double meanings, troublesome literalization-and to see these not as pitfalls but as opportunities. On stanza and strophe breaks: if a stanza is a room, the breaks between must be doorways, and who wants to sit down and rest in a doorway? …

Influence Of The Marsh Edge On The Structure And Trophic Ecology Of The Fish And Macroinvertebrate Community In A Louisiana Estuarine Ecosystem, Guillermo Duque
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Habitat degradation of saltmarsh ecosystems reduces the suitability of the marsh as permanent environments for resident species and seasonal nursery grounds for transient fauna. This study was conducted in Terrebonne-Timbalier bays near Cocodrie, Louisiana. Fishes and macroinvertebrates were collected using a drop sampler in marsh-edge and open-water habitat types, in three locations (i.e., pond, channel, and bay), and four seasons (Fall of 2000, Winter of 2000-2001, and Spring and Summer of 2001). The specific objectives of this study were: (1) to determine the difference in composition and structure of fish and macroinvertebrate communities, (2) to establish the food habits of …

As the World Wide Web continues to grow, the tools to retrieve the information must develop in terms of locating web pages, categorizing content, and retrieving quality pages. Web search engines have enhanced the online experience by making pages easier to find. Search engines have made a science of cataloging page content, but the data can age, becoming outdated and irrelevant.
By searching pages in real time in a localized area of the web, information that is retrieved is guaranteed to be available at the time of the search. The real-time search engines intriguing premise provides an overwhelming challenge. Since …
Isolation And Characterization Of Carbonic Anhydrase From Ostertagia Ostertagi, Andrew Allan Derosa
Isolation And Characterization Of Carbonic Anhydrase From Ostertagia Ostertagi, Andrew Allan Derosa
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The first event in the infection process of Ostertagia ostertagi in cattle is the process of exsheathment. Before trichostrongylid nematodes can transition from a free-living infective stage larva (L3) on pasture to a parasitic existence within the ruminant host, it must first undergo exsheathment. Exsheathment is the process whereby the L2 cuticle retained from the previous molt is cast from the L3. Exsheathment enables the developmental transition from a free-living stage on pasture to a parasitic existence in the bovine host. For those species with a predilection site in the abomasum, such as O. ostertagi, …
Haunted By The Uncanny - Development Of A Genre From The Late Eighteenth To The Late Nineteenth Century, Alexandra Maria Reuber
Haunted By The Uncanny - Development Of A Genre From The Late Eighteenth To The Late Nineteenth Century, Alexandra Maria Reuber
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation traces the development of the supernatural from the late eighteenth to the late nineteenth-century. Since supernatural elements are unknown and unfamiliar, they easily arouse anxiety, fear, and even result in terror. As such they produce the effect of the uncanny and introduce the psychological component into the selected literary corpus taken from the English Gothic novel, the German Schauerroman, and the French littérature fantastique. The analysis of the selected material is based on a psychoanalytical approach using Sigmund Freud’s understanding of the uncanny, his dream analysis, and his view of the conscious and unconscious, but also considers Carl …
Site-Directed Mutagenesis Studies Of E. Coli Biotin Carboxylase, Valerie Melissa Sloane
Site-Directed Mutagenesis Studies Of E. Coli Biotin Carboxylase, Valerie Melissa Sloane
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Acetyl-CoA carboxylase is an essential enzyme in all plants, animals, and bacterie, where it catalyzes the committed step in fatty acid synthesis. The Escherichia coli version of the enzyme has three functional components that dissociate readily: biotin carboxylase, carboxyltransferase, and a biotin carboxyl carrier protein. The biotin carboxylase component catalyzes the ATP-dependent carboxylation of biotin, using bicarbonate as the carboxylate source. Biotin carboxylase is a member of a functionally diverse superfamily of proteins known as the ATP-grasp enzymes. In the first study, four residues of biotin carboxylase, Lys 116, Lys 159, His 209, and Glu 276, were selected for site-directed …
Reconstructing The Blaine Amendments, Frederick Mark Gedicks
Reconstructing The Blaine Amendments, Frederick Mark Gedicks
Faculty Scholarship
In the wake of the Supreme Court's decision upholding school vouchers in Zelman v. Simmons-Harris, school choice proponents have turned their attention to the state Blaine Amendments. Blaine Amendments are contained in 37 state constitutions, and are modeled after a failed federal constitutional amendment sponsored by James G. Blaine in 1876 that would have prohibited the states from allocating state funds and other resources to sectarian organizations. Thus, even though Zelman appears to have removed all federal Establishment Clause impediments to properly structured school choice programs, Blaine Amendments continue to stand in the way of such programs.
The validity of …

Valuing Servants Ends : A New Theory Of Ethical Service, Patricia Grace Devlin
Valuing Servants Ends : A New Theory Of Ethical Service, Patricia Grace Devlin
Honors Theses
Many of today's universities encourage students to develop an ethic of service. Administrators, faculty, and staff members accompany students in campus-wide service activities; a number of collegiate honor societies reward students who engage in community service; and some academic programs require students to volunteer with local non-profit organizations. At its best, service learning inspires students to make a general commitment to service. The current emphasis placed on service learning in today's educational system reveals an emerging academic perspective not only on the value service has as an educational device but also on the significant role service plays in society. For …
