The Effects Of Inorganic And Organic Selenium Sources On Growth Performance, Carcass Traits, Tissue Mineral Concentrations, And Enzyme Activity In Poultry, Robert L, Iii Payne
The Effects Of Inorganic And Organic Selenium Sources On Growth Performance, Carcass Traits, Tissue Mineral Concentrations, And Enzyme Activity In Poultry, Robert L, Iii Payne
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of this research was to compare dietary inorganic and organic Se sources in poultry. An experiment was conducted to assess daily egg production and Se deposition in eggs of hens fed diets supplemented with inorganic or organic Se. The results from this experiment indicated that hen production was not affected by Se source, and organic Se increased egg Se concentrations more than inorganic Se. Two experiments then were conducted with broilers to compare dietary organic and inorganic Se on growth performance, carcass traits, breast and plasma Se concentrations, and plasma glutathione peroxidase activity. The results from these experiments …

19th And 20th Century French Exoticism: Pierre Loti, Louis-Ferdinand Cé́Line, Michel Leiris, And Simone Schwarz-Bart, Robin Anita White
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This study of four 19th and 20th century colonial texts, as well as a later postcolonial novel exposes the cadres exotiques, or exotic frameworks, of literary exoticism. The thesis names and interprets the moods of and reactions to exoticism, including colonial exoticism, antiexoticism, and autoexoticism. Poetic and theoretical interpretations of exoticism, such as Victor Segalen’s Notion du Divers and Edouard Glissant’s Opacité and Poétique de la Relation challenge the prevalent assumptions that the literary practice was only an unfortunate byproduct of colonialism. The first chapter presents literary history and theoretical considerations relating to exoticism: Orientalism, nostalgia, colonial literary history, and …
Dry Matter Accumulation By The Start Of Seed Filling As A Criterion For Yield Optimization In Soybean, Harikrishna Modali
Dry Matter Accumulation By The Start Of Seed Filling As A Criterion For Yield Optimization In Soybean, Harikrishna Modali
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Identification of criteria for predicting soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merril] yield would provide farmers with useful management tools. Such criteria not only help in predicting the yield potential but also aid the farmer in determination of environmental factors limiting crop yield. Since a certain total dry matter (TDM) level is expected to optimize yield and R5 marks the end of the period for vegetative TDM accumulation, TDM(R5) is a good putative criterion for optimal yield. Determination of yield components important in yield formation helps to substantiate TDM(R5) as a criterion for optimum yield, since they are formed during discrete periods …
Physicochemical And Functional Properties Of Crawfish Chitosan As Affected By Different Processing Protocols, Sun-Ok Fernandez-Kim
Physicochemical And Functional Properties Of Crawfish Chitosan As Affected By Different Processing Protocols, Sun-Ok Fernandez-Kim
LSU Master's Theses
Chitosan is made from chitin by a chemical process involving demineralization (DM), deproteinization (DP), decolorization (DC), and deacetylation (DA). Very little work has been done to demonstrate the effects of altering or excluding any of the processing steps on chitosan characteristics. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the effects of process modification during chitosan production on the physiochemical and functional properties of crawfish chitosans. Five experimental chitosan samples (DCMPA, DMCPA, DMPCA, DMPAC, DAMPC) prepared with modified processing protocols and the control (DPMCA - traditional chitosan production process) were evaluated and compared with the two commercial crab chitosans. All samples …

Genetics And Functions Of Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 Membrane Proteins In Virus-Induced Cell Fusion, Virion Morphogenesis And Egress, Jeffrey Michael Melancon
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The Herpes Simplex Virus life cycle contains a number of membrane fusion events that must function properly to ensure a productive infection, including: virus attachment and entry into susceptible cells, de-envelopment at the outer nuclear lamellae, and virus-induced cell-to-cell fusion. A virus-free cell fusion assay was recently developed in order to attempt to understand the underlying mechanisms that are responsible for viral fusion events and was utilized in order to investigate the effect of mutations targeted to the carboxyl terminus of gB. We showed that the predicted alpha helical domain H17b within the carboxyl-terminus of gB is involved in both …

Synthesis And Antibacterial Assessment Of Water-Soluble Hydrophobic Chitosan Derivatives Bearing Quaternary Ammonium Functionality, Mrunal R. Thatte
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Chitosan is a naturally occurring, bio-degradable, non-toxic, non-allergenic bio-polysaccharide derived from chitin, found in abundance in nature. Studies aimed at deriving newer applications of chitosan are hence of interest. Among these, one of the focuses of investigations is aimed at excellent antimicrobial activity demonstrated by chitosan. In this context, certain quaternary ammonium derivatives of chitosan have been shown in the past to be highly effective antibacterial materials. In the present study, substituted chitosan derivatives were synthesized and further quaternized using Quat-188 to produce water soluble derivatives at neutral pH. The antibacterial assessments of the quaternized derivatives of substituted chitosan were …

Faunal Succession Of Necrophilous Insects Associated With High-Pofile Wildlife Carcasses In Louisiana, Erin Jean Grindley Watson
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The same entomological criteria used in estimating time of death for humans are applicable for deceased wildlife. Necrophilous insects associated with animal carcasses can provide wildlife law enforcement with valuable information necessary for postmortem interval estimation, and ultimately, to incriminate poachers. The purpose of this research was twofold: to establish species composition, faunal succession patterns, and species and life stage interactions of necrophilous insects associated with three wildlife species; and to identify new methods of evaluating succession patterns using statistical measures. Twenty-one large vertebrate carcasses were monitored throughout decomposition in a mixed flatwood forest in East Baton Rouge Parish, LA …

Rates Of Molecular Evolution And Their Application To Neotropical Avian Biogeography, Christopher C. Witt
Rates Of Molecular Evolution And Their Application To Neotropical Avian Biogeography, Christopher C. Witt
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The tempo of evolution and the causes of rate variation among lineages are central foci of evolutionary biology. I evaluated two hypothesized sources of variation in molecular evolutionary rate, and I applied a variable molecular clock to estimate the timescale of diversification in three families of Neotropical birds. First, I examined the phylogenetic evidence for molecular punctuated equilibrium, the hypothesis that speciation drives accelerated molecular evolution. Recent findings that rates of DNA evolution and speciation are linked implicate molecular punctuated equilibrium as an important cause of rate variation among lineages. I used phylogenetic simulations to test this reported link, and …
William Faulkner And The Oral Text, Gregory Alan Borse
William Faulkner And The Oral Text, Gregory Alan Borse
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The disjunction between the oral and the literate in the works of William Faulkner reveals the different ways these distinct modes of organization combine to structure a text. The oral in Faulkner's fiction makes its presence known not only as offset speech but also as a mode of action and narrative whose logic is conjunctive rather than disjunctive. According to the literate mode, a form organizes novelistic matter. According to the oral mode, forces that function as signs rather than organizers of their form rule the action and narrative. When the disjunction between the oral and the literate is so …
The Diagnosis Of Dementia In Persons With Mental Retardation: Validating Methods Of Assessment, Joanne Bielecki
The Diagnosis Of Dementia In Persons With Mental Retardation: Validating Methods Of Assessment, Joanne Bielecki
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The usual assessment instruments for the diagnosis of dementia are often difficult to use among individuals with mental retardation. This study investigates whether a modified method based on Visser et al. (1997) can identify a dementing process. Ninety individuals diagnosed with severe and profound mental retardation were studied. One half of the participants were diagnosed with Down's syndrome. The participants were equally assigned to one of three groups based on perceived risk of dementia. A differential prevalence design was used. Both cross sectional and longitudinal analyses were utilized in this study. Results indicate that the Visser et al. (1997) method …
Minimum Dogma And Religious Toleration, Clinton Bryan Barron
Minimum Dogma And Religious Toleration, Clinton Bryan Barron
LSU Master's Theses
This thesis examines issues that emerge from the investigation of the relationship between John Locke's arguments for religious toleration as found in his Letter Concerning Toleration and his construction of a minimum dogma for Christianity in his The Reasonableness of Christianity. The first chapter follows the development of minimum dogma from its origin in the experience Eric Voegelin terms the leap in being, through Xenophanes' concept of "seemliness," to the minimum dogmas of Plato. The second chapter examines the use of minimum dogma in theories of religious toleration by More and Spinoza. The final chapter examines the work of John …

Solving A Locational Distribution Problem Of Non-Toxic Solid Waste On The Island Of Puerto Rico, Sandra A. Soto
LSU Master's Theses
The island of Puerto Rico is confronting a crisis in waste management due to inadequate management from the local government, the decreasing number of landfills available, high population density, and paucity of places for waste disposal. This research develops a least-cost model for the disposal and transportation of non-hazardous solid waste. Location-allocation (LA) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software are used to analyze the efficiency of the present pattern of waste allocation and to identify a near-to-optimal assignment of waste for the landfills in operation today and the landfills that will be open by 2008. The “near-to-optimal” models obtained from …

Feeding Ecology And Morphometric Analysis Of Paddlefish, Polyodon Spathula, In The Mermentau River, Louisiana, Nicole Adele Smith
LSU Master's Theses
Little is known about the morphometrics and the feeding ecology of paddlefish in Louisiana. I examined the morphometrics and feeding ecology of paddlefish from the Mermentau River, Louisiana from March 2002 to February 2003. Paddlefish were examined morphometrically by taking measurements of eye-fork length (EFL), body cavity length (BCL), girth (G), vent girth (VG), mouth vertical (MTB), mouth horizontal (MSS), and mouth gullet bottom (MGB) to determine which parameters would give a better estimate of weight (W). Regression analysis resulted in a morphometric model of the form: logW = 10.10 + 1.52 (logEFL) + 1.21 (logG) + 0.24 (logVG) (r2 …
The Use Of Altrenogest To Control Reproductive Function In Beef Cattle, Clarence Edward Ferguson
The Use Of Altrenogest To Control Reproductive Function In Beef Cattle, Clarence Edward Ferguson
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
There has been great controversy involving progesterone (P4) levels during early pregnancy in cattle. The objectives of these experiments were to determine the effect of an early low dose administration of P4 or altrenogest (ALT) on pregnancy rates in repeat breeder (RPB) females, if an increase in pregnancy rates could result from a direct effect of P4 on the embryo and if ALT could support pregnancy in the absence of a functional CL. Firstly, ALT was evaluated for use as a progestin in cattle by synchronizing estrus in beef heifers. There were no differences in the …

Storytelling From The Margins: The Healing Narratives Of J. California Cooper, Cynthia Downing Bryant
Storytelling From The Margins: The Healing Narratives Of J. California Cooper, Cynthia Downing Bryant
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This study examines the therapeutic qualities of selected short stories and novels by contemporary African American woman writer, J. California Cooper. Specifically, I examine the manner in which Cooper's texts can be appreciated as "healing narratives." Healing narratives, as defined in this study, are those texts in which the author consciously creates fictitious representations of reality, while employing the concept of hope as a central and guiding factor. Those aspects of the narrative that have the ability to heal or "lay hands on" a reader vary because the effectiveness of the story depends upon how well the reader can identify …

Development Of Chicken Polyclonal And Mouse Monoclonal-Based Enyzyme Immunoassays For The Detection Of Β-Cyclocitral In Catfish Pond Water, Cate Nakaweesa Munene
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The Catfish industry faces a problem of off-flavors due to odorous compounds produced by cyanobacteria and blue-green algae. Beta-Cyclocitral imparts a hay-woody odor to pond water and fish tissues. At present there are no reliable pond treatment methods available to control these off-flavors. To monitor the levels of this compound for quality control, rapid, sensitive and inexpensive methods are needed. The major goal of this study was to develop enzyme-linked immunoflow assays based on monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies that are specific and sensitive enough to detect beta-cyclocitral in catfish pond water. Beta-Cyclocitral-PPD conjugate was prepared and used to immunize two …

Studies Of Ergot Alkaloid Biosynthesis Genes In Clavicipitaceous Fungi, Caroline Machado
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Neotyphodium species, endophytic fungi associated with cool-season grasses, enhance host fitness and stress tolerance, but also produce biologically active alkaloids including ergot alkaloids associated with fescue toxicosis in grazing animals. One approach to reduce fescue toxicosis is to manipulate genes in the ergot alkaloid pathway. The gene, dmaW, encoding the first pathway-specific step in ergot alkaloid biosynthesis, was cloned previously from Claviceps spp. and its function was demonstrated by expression in yeast. Putative homologs have been cloned from Neotyphodium coenophialum (from tall fescue) and Neotyphodium sp. Lp1 (from perennial ryegrass). In order to confirm the function of dmaW in ergot …
