Jesus And Transformation, Paul N. Anderson Jan 2004

Jesus And Transformation, Paul N. Anderson

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

Transformational leadership differs greatly from transactional leadership. Transactional leadership conditions others to think in terms of penalties and rewards, thus motivating actions and reactions according to the interests of the individual. It is self-oriented, conditioning others along the lines of desired outcomes, but, as the motivating factors are external, adherence to those values and behaviors is tied to their reinforcement. When the systems of reward diminish, so do corollary commitments. In that sense, transactional leadership is situational and reward specific.

Taking Adaptive Management Seriously: A Case Study Of The Endangered Species Act, J.B. Ruhl Jan 2004

Taking Adaptive Management Seriously: A Case Study Of The Endangered Species Act, J.B. Ruhl

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

If one compares the way in which the ESA was implemented in 1982 to the way it is today, the list of differences would far outweigh the similarities. Indeed, the ESA has been transformed so much through administrative reform toward the ecosystem management model, I have dared to suggest elsewhere that it has earned the seal of eco-pragmatism. In this Article, I explore the related question such an assertion necessarily begs-has the ESA also earned the seal of adaptive management?... Part I of the Article provides the legal and ecological background necessary to appreciate the need for ecosystem management, and …

What Is The Sound Of A Corporation Speaking? How The Cognitive Theory Of Metaphor Can Help Lawyers Shape The Law, Linda L. Berger Jan 2004

What Is The Sound Of A Corporation Speaking? How The Cognitive Theory Of Metaphor Can Help Lawyers Shape The Law, Linda L. Berger

Scholarly Works

This article argues that better understanding of metaphor's cognitive role can help lawyers shape judicial decision-making. As a way of exploring metaphor's contribution to shaping the law, the article focuses on how a particular lawsuit was influenced by metaphor, in particular, by the primary metaphor that a corporation is a person within the more complex metaphorical system suggested by the marketplace of ideas model for First Amendment protection. After describing the cognitive theory of metaphor and examining the metaphors underlying First Amendment protection for corporate speech, the article analyzes the use of metaphor in the briefs filed in the U.S. …

Molecular Cloning And Characterization Of Two Mouse Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor Alpha (Ppara) Regulated Peroxisomal Acyl-Coa Thioesterases., Maria Westin, Mary Hunt, Stefan Alexson Jan 2004

Molecular Cloning And Characterization Of Two Mouse Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor Alpha (Ppara) Regulated Peroxisomal Acyl-Coa Thioesterases., Maria Westin, Mary Hunt, Stefan Alexson

Articles

Peroxisomes are organelles that function in the b-oxidation of very-long and long-chain acyl-CoAs, bile acid-CoA intermediates, prostaglandins, leukotrienes, thromboxanes, dicarboxylic fatty acids, pristanic acid and xenobiotic carboxylic acids. The very long- and long-chain acyl-CoAs are mainly chain-shortened and then transported to mitochondria for further metabolism. We have now identified and characterized two peroxisomal acyl- CoA thioesterases, named PTE-Ia and PTE-Ic, which hydrolyze acyl-CoAs to the free fatty acid and coenzyme A. PTE-Ia and PTE-Ic show 82% sequence identity at amino acid level and a putative peroxisomal type 1 targeting signal of –AKL was identified at the carboxy-terminal end of both …

The Experience Of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury For Selected Cases, Joanne Baggerly Jan 2004

The Experience Of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury For Selected Cases, Joanne Baggerly

Open Access Dissertations

There are hints in the literature that recovery from mild traumatic brain injury may be problematic for older persons, yet there is a paucity of information on the experience. The purpose of this study was to develop a descriptive base and highlight the perspective of the client. This is important to nurses in that appropriate intervention must be grounded in an understanding of the problem as perceived and acted upon by the client. This study describes the experience of three women over 50 years of age who had a mild traumatic brain injury. The analytical process followed the case study …

From Discourse To Activism: Trajectories Of Percy Bysshe Shelley's Nonviolence Philosophy In Literatures Of Resistance, Susan Joan Peterson Jan 2004

From Discourse To Activism: Trajectories Of Percy Bysshe Shelley's Nonviolence Philosophy In Literatures Of Resistance, Susan Joan Peterson

Open Access Dissertations

My dissertation traces the emergence of a new discourse on nonviolence conflict reconciliation during the age of the English Romantic poets. Specifically, this project examines Percy Bysshe Shelley's prose works such as An Address to the Irish People, Proposals for an Association of Philanthropists , and the Notes to Queen Mab. Within these texts Shelley articulates both the philosophy and methodology of nonviolent conflict reconciliation. His theory significantly impacted the formation of the philosophies and the campaigns of the later nonviolence author/activists Henry David Thoreau, Mohandas Gandhi, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Mairead Maguire. Rather than viewing their momentous …

Prolegomenon To The Literary Study Of Hypertext, Edward Steven Shear

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation is intended as contribution to the development of a framework and methodology for the literary study of hypertext. Its first purpose is to analyze the term "hypertext" and related keywords in respect to their widely varying usages in multiple disciplines to provide required clarification to identify the object of study in literary hypertext studies. The second purpose of the study is to propose a framework by which pre-computer literary works may be examined in relationship to the contemporary form of hypertext. These two goals work hand-in-hand to provide a groundwork of a literary history of hypertext. The first …

The Assault On Pharmaceutical Intellectual Property, Bruce N. Kuhlik Jan 2004

The Assault On Pharmaceutical Intellectual Property, Bruce N. Kuhlik

University of Chicago Law Review

Pharmaceutical research and development is a lengthy, risky, and expensive enterprise. The industry depends uniquely on patent and trade secret protections to support its investments in innovative activities. However, recent legislative and regulatory developments threaten the value of pharmaceutical intellectual property in two distinct respects. First, patent and related protections are being restricted, and effective enforcement of these rights is being made increasingly difficult. Second, price controls and similar initiatives are interfering with market-based returns during the limited period in which patent rights are in force. This Essay describes the importance of intellectual property rights to the pharmaceutical industry, reviews …

Preventing Club Lamb Fungus, Bill Epperson Jan 2004

Preventing Club Lamb Fungus, Bill Epperson

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

“Club Lamb Fungus” is a disease caused by a fungus (Trichophyton) that infects the skin, resulting in circular scabby or dandruffy ringworm lesions. The fungus is able to live a long time in the environment on halters, shearing equipment, and sheep contact surfaces. Club Lamb Fungus has become prevalent in show lambs. It can infect any sheep, but show lambs are particularly susceptible. Because it is contagious from lamb to lamb and because people can get the disease, it has become an important disease to watch for in show lambs.

Mastitis Contagiosa Vs. Ambiental, Alavaro Garcia Jan 2004

Mastitis Contagiosa Vs. Ambiental, Alavaro Garcia

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Decentralized Control Of Vehicle Formations, Gerardo Lafferriere, Anca Williams, John S. Caughman Iv, J. J. P. Veerman

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper investigates a method for decentralized stabilization of vehicle formations using techniques from algebraic graph theory. The vehicles exchange information according to a pre-specified communication digraph, G. A feedback control is designed using relative information between a vehicle and its in-neighbors in G. We prove that a necessary and sufficient condition for an appropriate decentralized linear stabilizing feedback to exist is that G has a rooted directed spanning tree. We show the direct relationship between the rate of convergence to formation and the eigenvalues of the (directed) Laplacian of G. Various special situations are discussed, including …

Pandemic Influenza: Public Health Preparedness For The Next Global Health Emergency, Lawrence O. Gostin Jan 2004

Pandemic Influenza: Public Health Preparedness For The Next Global Health Emergency, Lawrence O. Gostin

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) garnered a great deal of public attention because it was novel and its potential for spread was unknown. However, the SARS corona virus is significantly less virulent than pandemic influenza viral infections. The annual number of deaths for seasonal influenza is 36,000 people in the United States and 250,000- 500,000 worldwide. However, highly pathogenic influenza pandemics have occurred roughly 2-3 times per century, causing untold morbidity and mortality. The Spanish influenza pandemic of 1918 was believed to have caused over 20 million deaths in a world less than one-third the size of the current global …
