The Effects Of Environmentally Relevant Doses Of Perchlorate (Clo4-) On Rana Pipiens Metamorphosis And Development, Andrea N. Golli Jan 2004

The Effects Of Environmentally Relevant Doses Of Perchlorate (Clo4-) On Rana Pipiens Metamorphosis And Development, Andrea N. Golli

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of environmentally relevant concentrations of perchlorate on the development and growth of Rana pipiens. Ammonium perchlorate is a rocket fuel oxidizer that is known to interfere with the function of the thyroid gland and some of the highest United States surface water concentration exists in the Las Vegas Wash, NV. Perchlorate not only blocks the body’s ability to incorporate iodine into T3 and T4 hormones through the sodium iodine symporter system, but also depletes the thyroid glands’ internal stores of iodine. Many of the steps that regulate metamorphosis in amphibians …

A Product Of Mexico: Truly Mexican Taste?, Maria E. Cazares Jan 2004

A Product Of Mexico: Truly Mexican Taste?, Maria E. Cazares

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Because people of all races, creeds and colors tend to view the world about them through their own eyes, or through the lenses of their own cultures (Fellows, 1972, p.39), it is logical to think that all kinds of visual expression differs from one culture to another, and that graphic design is not an exception. Coming from a place so rich in ancient and modern culture as is Mexico, I have been able to enjoy two very different experiences in a foreign country. On one hand, I came to the United States filled with the essence of being Mexican, and …

Long-Lived Worms And Aging, Yuan Luo Jan 2004

Long-Lived Worms And Aging, Yuan Luo

Faculty Publications

Several investigators have generated long-lived nematode worms (Caenorhabditis elegans) in the past decade by mutation of genes in the organism in order to study the genetics of aging and longevity. Dozens of longevity assurance genes (LAG) that dramatically increase the longevity of this organism have been identified. All long-lived mutants of C. elegans are also resistant to environmental stress, such as high temperature, reactive oxygen species (ROS), and ultraviolet irradiation. Double mutations of some LAGS further extended life span up to 400%, providing more insight into cellular mechanisms that put limits on the life span of organisms. With …

The Implementation Of Fda Determinations In Litigation - Why Do We Defer To The Pto But Not To The Fda?, William G. Childs

Faculty Scholarship

This Article examines the possible inequity of the treatment of licensees' rights in tort litigation in comparison to patent rights in patent litigation. In particular, this Article presents the presumptions afforded from issued patents as a valid model for the proper treatment of FDA approval in litigation. Presently, most academic discussion proposes either preclusion of tort claims or leaving the system more or less as it stands. This Article, on the other hand, proposes a middle ground.

This Article begins by examining the differences between the USPTO and the FDA. In particular, the quantity and quality of the review provided …

The Children Of Art (Assisted Reproductive Technology): Should The Law Protect Them From Harm?, Jennifer L. Rosato Jan 2004

The Children Of Art (Assisted Reproductive Technology): Should The Law Protect Them From Harm?, Jennifer L. Rosato

Utah Law Review

Assisted reproductive technology ("ART") has been in existence for twenty-five years with very little oversight or regulation. During this time, many infertile couples, gay and lesbian couples, and single parents have benefited from these procedures, which include in vitro fertilization ("IVF") and intracytoplasmic sperm injection ("ICSI"). In the year 2001, 107,587 ART cycles were reported, which represents a sixty-six percent increase from 1996. This number is likely to increase even further as more older couples try to conceive and more clinics begin to offer ART services. Consequently, fertility is one of the fastest growing areas of medicine.

The Collaborative Integrity Of Open-Source Software, Greg R. Vetter Jan 2004

The Collaborative Integrity Of Open-Source Software, Greg R. Vetter

Utah Law Review

Open-source software is a new order full of transposition and paradox. Copyright licenses promote copying rather than prohibit it. Software teams work better scattered around the world than housed in one place. Free software has higher quality than sold software. The open-source phenomenon is part ideological triumph and part opportunistic pragmatism. There are many facets to this new phenomenon, many ways to better understand what originated it, sustains it, helps it grow, and what may threaten it.

Our Toxics Regulatory System And Why Risk Assessment Does Not Work: Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals As A Case In Point, Valerie J. Watnick Jan 2004

Our Toxics Regulatory System And Why Risk Assessment Does Not Work: Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals As A Case In Point, Valerie J. Watnick

Utah Law Review

Our current toxics regulatory system is based on the fundamental premise that the public expects a high degree of safety-close to absolute safety 2-in the regulation of toxins in our environment. To implement a system based on this fundamental assumption, we assume further that we can use risk assessment to develop "health-based" safety standards and use command and control regulation to implement them. This Article suggests that the fundamental premise that we can and should develop and apply standards that ensure safety to human health in our toxics regulatory schemes has little basis in current political and scientific reality. Politically, …

The Ecological Causes And Consequences Of Prey Choice And Ontogenetic Niche Shifts In The Common Goby, Angus Charles Jackson Jan 2004

The Ecological Causes And Consequences Of Prey Choice And Ontogenetic Niche Shifts In The Common Goby, Angus Charles Jackson

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Foraging behaviour of the common goby, Pomatoschistus microps was investigated in both the United Kingdom and Sweden, with the aim of establishing causes and consequences of prey choice and ontogenetic shifts in diet. Goby life-cycle could be clearly divided into two stages, where prey choice changed abruptly from meio- to macrofauna at a standard length of 30 mm. This diet-shift maximised net energy intake rates, as illustrated by a quantitatively validated optimal foraging model. Intrinsic mechanisms were of greater importance than extrinsic factors in driving this shift. Metabolism, the primary prey choice determinant, revealed canalised and predictable diet shifts in …

Studies On Myxozoan Parasites Of Freshwater Fish And Invertebrate Hosts, Matthew Longshaw Jan 2004

Studies On Myxozoan Parasites Of Freshwater Fish And Invertebrate Hosts, Matthew Longshaw

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

A study of myxozoan parasites has been investigated in hosts from freshwater environments in the UK. Over 17,000 oligochaetes, almost 5,000 juvenile cyprinids representing 7 species and over 60 invertebrate species have been examined for the presence of myxozoan parasites. In addition, studies on the lifecycle of Tetracapsuloides bryosalmonae (the causative agent of salmonid proliferative kidney disease, PKD) and of selected cyprinid myxozoans were conducted. A total of 21 actinospore types in seven collective groups were isolated and described from oligochaetes collected from seven different river systems in England and Wales. Twelve of the actinospores isolated appear to be new …

Responses Of The Decapod Crustacean, Carcinus Maenas, Following Exposure To Environmental Contaminants. Development And Application Of Multiple Biomarkers., Giles Marcus Watson Jan 2004

Responses Of The Decapod Crustacean, Carcinus Maenas, Following Exposure To Environmental Contaminants. Development And Application Of Multiple Biomarkers., Giles Marcus Watson

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Marine, coastal and estuarine ecosystems continue to be contaminated by anthropogenic chemicals. Improving our mechanistic understanding of the toxicity of environmental pollutants to aquatic organisms is therefore an important priority. This work is focussed on detecting and measuring the molecular, cellular and physiological responses of the shore crab Carcimis maenas following exposure to environmental chemicals, and uses biomarkers to do so. To better understand the response of C.maenas to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) a novel biomarker of exposure to this class of compounds was developed. Direct fluorimetric techniques revealed that the shore crab C.maenas eliminated metabolites of pyrene in the …

Ecology And Conservation Of Mediterranean Temporary Ponds In The Uk, Louise Mcabendroth Jan 2004

Ecology And Conservation Of Mediterranean Temporary Ponds In The Uk, Louise Mcabendroth

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Macroinvertebrate and plant assemblage composition and abiotic habitat characteristics were examined in seventy-six ponds, in the New Forest (Hampshire, UK) and on the Lizard Peninsula (Cornwall, UK), in order to unravel the ecological processes influencing ponds at a range of spatial scales and provide a clear definition of Mediterranean Temporary Pond (MTP) habitat (92/43/EEC) in the UK. In addition, a set of newly created experimental ponds were monitored on the Lizard to examine patterns of colonisation and evaluate the use of habitat creation in temporary pond conservation. The findings are synthesised into a number of management recommendations for ponds in …

Biomarkers Of Chemical Impacts In The Freshwater Invertebrates Asellusaquaticus And Pacifastacus Leniusculus, Anne Jennie O'Neill Jan 2004

Biomarkers Of Chemical Impacts In The Freshwater Invertebrates Asellusaquaticus And Pacifastacus Leniusculus, Anne Jennie O'Neill

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

The international scientific community has grown increasingly concerned that exposure to low levels of anthropogenic chemicals may disturb hormone function and/or sub lethal toxicity to other cells or organ systems in vertebrate and invertebrate species. This research programme was designed to develop, evaluate, and apply a range of biological and chemical indicators in the laboratory and/or field to assess the impact of sublethal toxicants including potential endocrine disaipting chemicals in the aquatic invertebrates, Asellus aquaticus (isopod) and Pacifasiacus leniiisciiius (decapod). Laboratory exposures of A. aquaticiis to environmentally realistic concentrations of known contaminants present within the river systems have demonstrated a …

Ecology And Behaviour Of Postlarvae And Juveniles Of The Velvet Swimming Crab Necora Puber (L.), James Tony Lee Jan 2004

Ecology And Behaviour Of Postlarvae And Juveniles Of The Velvet Swimming Crab Necora Puber (L.), James Tony Lee

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Ecological studies of early benthic stages of brachyurans are rare for most of the species, leaving a gap in the understanding of processes regulating the recruitment to adult populations. The velvet swimming crab Necora puber (L. ) is a valuable commercial species where most of studies have been focused on the adult population. Little is known about the supply-side ecology and the post-settlement processes that affect the dynamics of the adult populations. The aims of the present study were to investigate the physical processes affecting the supply of recruits to the nearshore, to examine the processes associated with habitat selection …

Implementing Writer's Workshop In A Kindergarten Classroom, Katie Hauschildt Jan 2004

Implementing Writer's Workshop In A Kindergarten Classroom, Katie Hauschildt

Graduate Research Papers

Can children be taught to write in kindergarten? Should children be taught to write in kindergarten? How do you teach children to write in kindergarten? These and many other questions about the appropriateness of writing and how to teach writing have been swirling around the education community for many years. As a kindergarten teacher I myself began wondering about these questions and how to answer them. I was intrigued by the idea of providing a framework in my classroom that would encourage emerging readers and writers to create and manipulate their own text.

In an effort to better understand the …

Home-School Reading Journals And Parental Involvement, Annalisa Marie Miner Jan 2004

Home-School Reading Journals And Parental Involvement, Annalisa Marie Miner

Graduate Research Papers

"When schools encourage children to practice reading at home with parents, the children make significant gains in reading achievement compared to those who only practice at school" (Tizard, 1982).

Throughout my teaching career I have always worked with many students who are from homes that do not participate often in school and do not appear to have school-like literacy activities as a part of their family culture. I want to find a way to involve all families as collaborators in increasing their children's literacy achievement, because I feel this will benefit the children academically and also create a love of …

B.S., Michael P. Redmond Jan 2004

B.S., Michael P. Redmond

LSU Master's Theses

This is a novel about a hack of a novelist who guides a fraud of a novelist around an allegorical version of the United States of America. It tests the limits of its readers’ patience with irony and metafiction. Themes that are explored, mocked, and then explored again include belief, identity, reality, geography, the intersections of the aforementioned, and the comical futility of such exploration. Abandon all hope, ye who enter here.

Tyranny, Natural Law, And Secession, Geoffrey Plauche Jan 2004

Tyranny, Natural Law, And Secession, Geoffrey Plauche

LSU Master's Theses

This thesis is an examination of the problem of tyranny from the perspective of radical libertarianism. History is to be seen as a race and conflict between liberty and power. After a brief introduction, the second section of this thesis is devoted to sketching out a natural law and natural rights theory. With this as the foundation, the third section analyzes the seminal work of Étienne de la Boétie’s The Discourse of Voluntary Servitude in which he elucidates the nature of tyranny and the psychology of subjection. All governments, even the worst tyranny, rest upon general popular acceptance. Religious and …
