Developmental Disruption Of Thyroid Hormone: Correlations With Hearing Dysfunction In Rats, K. M. Crofton Jan 2004

Developmental Disruption Of Thyroid Hormone: Correlations With Hearing Dysfunction In Rats, K. M. Crofton

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

A wide variety of environmental contaminants adversely affect thyroid hormone (TH) homeostasis. Hypothyroidism and/or hypothyroxinemia during the early postnatal period in the rat leads to permanent structural damage and loss of function in the cochlea. A major uncertainty in assessing the risks of developmental exposure to thyroid-disrupting chemicals (TDCs) is the lack of a clear characterization of the dose-response relationship, especially in the lower region, between disruption of hormones and adverse consequences. The current work correlated early postnatal hypothyroxinemia with hearing loss in the adult rat. Linear regression was performed on the log transform for total serum thyroxine (T4) concentrations …

The Effects Of Habitat Resolution On Models Of Avian Diversity And Distributions: A Comparison Of Two Land-Cover Classifications, Joshua Lawler, Raymond O'Connor, Carolyn Hunsaker, K. Bruce Jones, Thomas Loveland, Denis White Jan 2004

The Effects Of Habitat Resolution On Models Of Avian Diversity And Distributions: A Comparison Of Two Land-Cover Classifications, Joshua Lawler, Raymond O'Connor, Carolyn Hunsaker, K. Bruce Jones, Thomas Loveland, Denis White

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Quantifying patterns is a key element of landscape analysis. One aspect of this quantification of particular importance to landscape ecologists is the classification of continuous variables to produce categorical variables such as land-cover type or elevation stratum. Although landscape ecologists are fully aware of the importance of spatial resolution in ecological investigations, the potential importance of the resolution of classifications has received little attention. Here we demonstrate the effects of using two different land-cover classifications to predict avian species richness and the occurrences of six individual species across the conterminous United States. We compared models built with a data set …

Can Treasury Overrule The Supreme Court?, Gregg Polsky Jan 2004

Can Treasury Overrule The Supreme Court?, Gregg Polsky

Faculty Articles

This article considers whether the Treasury's check-the-box regulations, which have been widely praised by tax practitioners, are valid. These regulations generally allow any unincorporated entity to elect whether it will be treated as a corporation or a partnership for tax purposes. When these regulations were first proposed, there was some debate as to whether such an elective regime was foreclosed by the statutory scheme, which requires that "associations" be taxed as corporations. This article argues that the focus of this debate was misplaced because, even assuming that the statutory scheme itself was sufficiently ambiguous as to permit an elective regime, …

The Constitutional Protection Of Trade Secrets Under The Takings Clause, Richard A. Epstein Jan 2004

The Constitutional Protection Of Trade Secrets Under The Takings Clause, Richard A. Epstein

Faculty Articles

Unlike patents and copyrights, trade secrets are protected primarily by state law rules, with some limited federal protection thrown into the mix. One gap in the system leads to a loss of protection for everyone, so that the gains from a uniform and consistent set of rules for trade secrets are enormous. Even so, those gains can be realized only through consistent interpretation and enforcement of these rules. For the most part, this congruence has taken place on the subconstitutional level, but the constitutional dimensions of trade secret law, especially in relation to the Takings Clause, do matter when trade …

Munazza’S Story: Shedding Light On A Science Teacher’S Conceptions Of The Nature Of Science Through A Life History Study, Nelofer Halai, Derek Hodson

Institute for Educational Development, Karachi

Life history research creates a broader understanding of teaching by providing illustration of the relationships among various aspects of teachers’ lives and their teaching practice, both inside and beyond the classroom. This article focuses on the life history of Munazza, a young science teacher at the Karachi Model Secondary School (KMSS), a private, co‐educational, English‐medium school for children from middle‐income families. Its purpose is to gain insight into a female science teacher's understanding of teaching science in a school in Pakistan, ascertain what aspects of this science teacher's conceptions of the nature of science are explicit in her practice, and …

To Be Brown In Brazil: Education And Segregation Latin American Style Colloquium - Relearning Brown: Applying The Lessons Of Brown To The Challenges Of The Twenty-First Century, Tanya K. Hernandez Jan 2004

To Be Brown In Brazil: Education And Segregation Latin American Style Colloquium - Relearning Brown: Applying The Lessons Of Brown To The Challenges Of The Twenty-First Century, Tanya K. Hernandez

Faculty Scholarship

As a scholar who studies civil rights movements from a comparative perspective, the commemoration of the fiftieth anniversary of the Brown v. Board of Education1 decision causes me to query the power of Brown as a symbol of equality outside of the United States. Because there is a larger community of African descendants living in Latin America and the Caribbean than there is in the United States, examining the role of Brown in Latin America and the Caribbean is particularly worthwhile. Furthermore, focusing on the Latin American and Caribbean contexts is also relevant due to the significant influence of the …

Design Of An Acoustic Data Storage Tag For Long Range Fish Tracking In The Ocean, Sangmok Lee Jan 2004

Design Of An Acoustic Data Storage Tag For Long Range Fish Tracking In The Ocean, Sangmok Lee

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation addresses the design of a miniature acoustic data storage tag intended for the tracking of small fish. The essential components of the system have been integrated in standard 0.5um CMOS technology. Geopositioning of the tag is achieved by measuring the transit time of a sonar signal emitted from a fixed source location. The received sonar signal is pre-amplified, filtered by three switched-capacitor filters, digitized, and then correlated with the expected pattern stored in internal memory. The monolithic temperature sensor is embedded in a band-gap reference circuit. The analog output of the temperature sensor is converted to digital by …

Ecomorphology Of The Temperate Scleractinian Astrangia Poculata: Coral-Macroalgal Interactions In Narragansett Bay, Sean Patrick Grace Jan 2004

Ecomorphology Of The Temperate Scleractinian Astrangia Poculata: Coral-Macroalgal Interactions In Narragansett Bay, Sean Patrick Grace

Open Access Dissertations

Corals and macroalgae often co-occur on temperate reefs, where macroalgae provide a majority of the bio-complexity and small scleractinian corals occur in low abundance. Macroalgae typically outcompete adjacent organisms for resources such as space, light, and nutrients, and one mechanism for this competitive success is abrasion. This study explores factors that may influence the interactions between corals and macroalgae, in particular macroalgal abrasion, on a temperate reef in Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island. Chapter One examines how exposure, depth and orientation influence the abundance and morphology of the coral Astrangia poculata, as well as the percent cover of macroalgae and other …

Collective Guilt And Collective Punishment, George P. Fletcher Jan 2004

Collective Guilt And Collective Punishment, George P. Fletcher

Faculty Scholarship

Attitudes toward collective guilt in the Middle East require us to take a closer look at guilt in the Bible. It turns out the text of Genesis is conflicted. Some passages support a theory of guilt linked with the inevitability of cleansing and punishment; other passages appear to treat guilt as a psychological state that might be cured by a confession of sins. The tension is important today in trying to understand whether the collective guilt of nations should also entail collective punishment.

The Cortical Microtubule Array: From Dynamics To Organization, Ram Dixit, Richard Cyr Jan 2004

The Cortical Microtubule Array: From Dynamics To Organization, Ram Dixit, Richard Cyr

Biology Faculty Research

Cortical microtubules (CMTs) are essential for normal plant morphogenesis because they affect the axes of cell elongation and predict the placement of cell division planes. The function of the CMTs is intimately linked to their organizational state, which is subject to spatial and temporal modifications by developmental and environmental cues. CMT assembly dynamics govern when, where, and how microtubules appear in a cell's cortex, and the regulation of these properties affects their organization. However, the principles that link microtubule assembly dynamics to cortical array organization and reconfiguration are not well understood. This essay focuses on recent advances in the understanding …

All the patients in both groups were analyzed for various risk factors for infection with hepatitis C virus and were tested for the presence of hepatitis C virus antibody (anti HCV), cryoglobulins and rheumatoid factor antibody. Hepatitis C viremia was documented by detection of HCV RNA by polymerase chain reaction.
Results: There was no significant difference for risk factors for hepatitis …

The Effects Of Age, Estrogen And Environmental Enrichment On Neurogenesis, Dendritic Spine Density And Synaptogenesis In The Hippocampus., Tina Marie Sager Jan 2004

The Effects Of Age, Estrogen And Environmental Enrichment On Neurogenesis, Dendritic Spine Density And Synaptogenesis In The Hippocampus., Tina Marie Sager

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Over 43 million women today are nearing or have passed menopause and 21 million more will be entering their climacteric period over the next decade. Cognitive symptoms such as poor memory and the inability to concentrate have been reported in perimenopausal and menopausal women. The goal of this study was to determine both the single and combined effects that age, estrogen and environmental enrichment have on neurogenesis, synapotgenesis, and dendritic spine density in the hippocampus region of the female rat brain. Ovariectomized, female Sprague-dawley rats were administered either estrogen replacement or a vehicle. The rats were then subjected to either …

Reflections On Teaching In A Catholic High School: A Qualitative Case Study, Daniel Blout

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This qualitative study participates in this ongoing scholarly conversation regarding the value of Catholic schools in the life ministry of the Catholic Church. By examining the understanding that lay teachers have of their responsibility to the Catholic identity and the faith formation of students in Catholic schools as articulated in the literature of leadership of the Catholic Church, this study examines some of the ways that lay teachers help maintain the Catholic identity of the school and how these teachers engage in the religious mission of Catholic schools. This qualitative study was purposely designed to engage and invite the 58 …

The Regulation Of Git1 Transcription In Response To Nutritional Factors, Wei Cheng Jan 2004

The Regulation Of Git1 Transcription In Response To Nutritional Factors, Wei Cheng

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Glycerophosphoinositol is produced through deacylation of the essential phospholipid phosphatidylinositol. In Saccharomyces cerevisiae, when inositol is limiting in the extracellular environment, the glycerophosphoinositol can be transported into the cell through the permease encoded by GIT1 . In this study, Northern blotting and GIT1 promoter activity were analyzed to assess the nutritional factors responsible for the regulation of GIT1 transcription. Here, I report that GIT1 transcript levels are greater in cells starved for phosphate, with or without inositol limitation, than in cells only limited for inositol. Ino2p and Ino4p are required for full GIT1 expression when the medium lacks both inositol …
